Recent advancements in sensor technology and deep learning have led to significant progress in 3D human body reconstruction. However, most existing approaches rely on data from a specific sensor, which can be unreliable due to the inherent limitations of individual sensing modalities. On the other hand, existing multi-modal fusion methods generally require customized designs based on the specific sensor combinations or setups, which limits the flexibility and generality of these methods. Furthermore, conventional point-image projection-based and Transformer-based fusion networks are susceptible to the influence of noisy modalities and sensor poses. To address these limitations and achieve robust 3D human body reconstruction in various conditions, we propose AdaptiveFusion, a generic adaptive multi-modal multi-view fusion framework that can effectively incorporate arbitrary combinations of uncalibrated sensor inputs. By treating different modalities from various viewpoints as equal tokens, and our handcrafted modality sampling module by leveraging the inherent flexibility of Transformer models, AdaptiveFusion is able to cope with arbitrary numbers of inputs and accommodate noisy modalities with only a single training network. Extensive experiments on large-scale human datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of AdaptiveFusion in achieving high-quality 3D human body reconstruction in various environments. In addition, our method achieves superior accuracy compared to state-of-the-art fusion methods.

Quantum state readout plays a pivotal role in quantum technologies, spanning applications in sensing, computation, and secure communication. In this work, we introduce a new approach for efficiently reading populations of hybrid-spin states in the nitrogen-vacancy center of diamond using a single laser pulse, which utilizes the excited state level anti-crossing mechanism at around 500 Gs. Reading spin state populations through this approach achieves the same outcome as traditional quantum state diagonal tomography but significantly reduces the experimental time by an order of magnitude while maintaining fidelity. Moreover, this approach may be extended to encompass full-state tomography, thereby obviating the requirement for a sequence of spin manipulations and mitigating errors induced by decoherence throughout the procedure.

The operation of upcoming ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray, gamma-ray, and neutrino radio-detection experiments, like the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND), poses significant computational challenges involving the production of numerous simulations of particle showers and their detection, and a high data throughput. GRANDlib is an open-source software tool designed to meet these challenges. Its primary goal is to perform end-to-end simulations of the detector operation, from the interaction of ultra-high-energy particles, through -- by interfacing with external air-shower simulations -- the ensuing particle shower development and its radio emission, to its detection by antenna arrays and its processing by data-acquisition systems. Additionally, GRANDlib manages the visualization, storage, and retrieval of experimental and simulated data. Over the past decade, there has been extensive work in developing integrated silicon photonics (SiPh) gratings for the optical addressing of trapped ion qubits in the ion trap quantum computing community. However, when viewing beam profiles from infrared (IR) cameras, it is often difficult to determine the corresponding heights where the beam profiles are located. In this work, we developed transformer models to recognize the corresponding height categories of beam profiles of light from SiPh gratings. The model is trained using two techniques: (1) input patches, and (2) input sequence. For model trained with input patches, the model achieved recognition accuracy of 0.938. Meanwhile, model trained with input sequence shows lower accuracy of 0.895. However, when repeating the model-training 150 cycles, model trained with input patches shows inconsistent accuracy ranges between 0.445 to 0.959, while model trained with input sequence exhibit higher accuracy values between 0.789 to 0.936. The obtained outcomes can be expanded to various applications, including auto-focusing of light beam and auto-adjustment of z-axis stage to acquire desired beam profiles.

Efficient sterilization of pathogens with cleaner methods is a critical concern for environmental disinfection and clinical anti-infective treatment. Plasma-activated water (PAW) is a promising alternative to chemical disinfectants and antibiotics for its strong sterilization ability and not inducing any acute toxicity, and only water and air are consumed during production. For more efficient water activation, plasma sources are commonly placed near or fully in contact with water as possible, but the risks of electrode corrosion and metal contamination of water threaten the safety and stability of PAW production. Herein, plasma-activated gas rich in high-valence NOx is generated by a hybrid plasma configuration and introduced into water for off-site PAW production. Plasma-generated O3 is found to dominate the gas-phase reactions for the formation of high-valence NOx. With the time-evolution of O3 concentration, gaseous NO3 radicals are produced behind N2O5 formation, but will be decomposed before N2O5 quenching. By decoupling the roles of gaseous NO3, N2O5, and O3 in the water activation, results show that short-lived aqueous species induced by gaseous NO3 radicals play the most crucial role in PAW sterilization, and the acidic environment induced by N2O5 is also essential. Moreover, SEM photographs and biomacromolecule leakage assays demonstrate that PAW disrupts the cell membranes of bacteria to achieve inactivation. In real-life applications, an integrated device for off-site PAW production with a yield of 2 L/h and a bactericidal efficiency of >99.9% is developed. The PAW of 50mL produced in 3 minutes using this device is more effective in disinfection than 0.5% NaClO and 3% H2O2 with the same bacterial contact time. This work provides new avenues for efficient PAW production and deepens insights into the fundamental processes that govern the reactive chemistry in PAW sterilization.

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool for solving combinatorial optimization problems (COPs), exhibiting state-of-the-art performance in both graph-structured and non-graph-structured domains. However, existing approaches lack a unified framework capable of addressing a wide range of COPs. After presenting a summary of representative COPs and a brief review of recent advancements in GNNs for solving COPs, this paper proposes a unified framework for solving COPs based on GNNs, including graph representation of COPs, equivalent conversion of non-graph structured COPs to graph-structured COPs, graph decomposition, and graph simplification. The proposed framework leverages the ability of GNNs to effectively capture the relational information and extract features from the graph representation of COPs, offering a generic solution to COPs that can address the limitations of state-of-the-art in solving non-graph-structured and highly complex graph-structured COPs.

In recommendation systems, high-quality user embeddings can capture subtle preferences, enable precise similarity calculations, and adapt to changing preferences over time to maintain relevance. The effectiveness of recommendation systems depends on the quality of user embedding. We propose to asynchronously learn high fidelity user embeddings for billions of users each day from sequence based multimodal user activities through a Transformer-like large scale feature learning module. The async learned user representations embeddings (ALURE) are further converted to user similarity graphs through graph learning and then combined with user realtime activities to retrieval highly related ads candidates for the ads delivery system. Selective classification enables models to make predictions only when they are sufficiently confident, aiming to enhance safety and reliability, which is important in high-stakes scenarios. Previous methods mainly use deep neural networks and focus on modifying the architecture of classification layers to enable the model to estimate the confidence of its prediction. This work provides a generalization bound for selective classification, disclosing that optimizing feature layers helps improve the performance of selective classification. Inspired by this theory, we propose to explicitly improve the selective classification model at the feature level for the first time, leading to a novel Confidence-aware Contrastive Learning method for Selective Classification, CCL-SC, which similarizes the features of homogeneous instances and differentiates the features of heterogeneous instances, with the strength controlled by the model's confidence. The experimental results on typical datasets, i.e., CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, CelebA, and ImageNet, show that CCL-SC achieves significantly lower selective risk than state-of-the-art methods, across almost all coverage degrees. A flexible active safety motion (FASM) control approach is proposed for the avoidance of dynamic obstacles and the reference tracking in robot manipulators. The distinctive feature of the proposed method lies in its utilization of control barrier functions (CBF) to design flexible CBF-guided safety criteria (CBFSC) with dynamically optimized decay rates, thereby offering flexibility and active safety for robot manipulators in dynamic environments. First, discrete-time CBFs are employed to formulate the novel flexible CBFSC with dynamic decay rates for robot manipulators. Following that, the model predictive control (MPC) philosophy is applied, integrating flexible CBFSC as safety constraints into the receding-horizon optimization problem. Significantly, the decay rates of the designed CBFSC are incorporated as decision variables in the optimization problem, facilitating the dynamic enhancement of flexibility during the obstacle avoidance process. In particular, a novel cost function that integrates a penalty term is designed to dynamically adjust the safety margins of the CBFSC. Finally, experiments are conducted in various scenarios using a Universal Robots 5 (UR5) manipulator to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

In this study, we investigate the image of a rotating compact object (CO) illuminated by a geometrically thin, optically thin disk on the equatorial plane. As the radius of the CO's surface fluctuates, the CO may partially or entirely obscure the photon region. We observe that the perceived photon ring may exhibit discontinuities, deviating from a closed structure, and may even disappear entirely. We find that the disruption and disappearance of the photon ring are dependent on the observational angle$-$a novel phenomenon not previously observed in black hole imaging studies. Our study reveals that while the factors influencing this unique photon ring phenomenon are diverse and the outcomes complex, we can provide a clear and comprehensive explanation of the physical essence and variation trends of this phenomenon. We do this by introducing and analyzing the properties and interrelationships of three characteristic functions, $\tilde{\eta}$, $\eta_o$, and $\eta_s$ related to the photon impact parameters. Additionally, our analysis of the intensity cuts and inner shadows of the images uncovers patterns that differ significantly from the shadow curve.

Approximate K Nearest Neighbor (AKNN) search in high-dimensional spaces is a critical yet challenging problem. In AKNN search, distance computation is the core task that dominates the runtime. Existing approaches typically use approximate distances to improve computational efficiency, often at the cost of reduced search accuracy. To address this issue, the state-of-the-art method, ADSampling, employs random projections to estimate approximate distances and introduces an additional distance correction process to mitigate accuracy loss. However, ADSampling has limitations in both effectiveness and generality, primarily due to its reliance on random projections for distance approximation and correction. To address the effectiveness limitations of ADSampling, we leverage data distribution to improve distance computation via orthogonal projection. Furthermore, to overcome the generality limitations of ADSampling, we adopt a data-driven approach to distance correction, decoupling the correction process from the distance approximation process. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of our method. In particular, compared to ADSampling, our method achieves a speedup of 1.6 to 2.1 times on real-world datasets while providing higher accuracy., Comment: 13 pages

The second brightest gamma-ray burst, GRB 230307A (with a duration $T_{90}$ ~ 40 s), exhibited characteristics indicative of a magnetar engine during the prompt emission phase. Notably, a suspected kilonova was identified in its follow-up optical and infrared observations. Here we propose that the origin of GRB 230307A is a neutron star-white dwarf (NS-WD) merger, as this could naturally interpret the long duration and the large physical offset from the center of its host galaxy. In the framework of such a NS-WD merger event, the late-time kilonova-like emission is very likely to be powered by the spin-down of the magnetar and the radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni, rather than by the decay of r-process elements as these heavy elements may not be easy to be synthesized in a NS-WD merger. It is demonstrated that the above scenario can be supported by our fit to the late-time observational data, where a mass of ~ $10^{-3} \ \rm M_{\odot}$ $^{56}$Ni is involved in the ejecta of a mass of ~ $0.1 \ \rm M_{\odot}$. Causal discovery from observational data is pivotal for deciphering complex relationships. Causal Structure Learning (CSL), which focuses on deriving causal Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) from data, faces challenges due to vast DAG spaces and data sparsity. The integration of Large Language Models (LLMs), recognized for their causal reasoning capabilities, offers a promising direction to enhance CSL by infusing it with knowledge-based causal inferences. However, existing approaches utilizing LLMs for CSL have encountered issues, including unreliable constraints from imperfect LLM inferences and the computational intensity of full pairwise variable analyses. In response, we introduce the Iterative LLM Supervised CSL (ILS-CSL) framework. ILS-CSL innovatively integrates LLM-based causal inference with CSL in an iterative process, refining the causal DAG using feedback from LLMs. This method not only utilizes LLM resources more efficiently but also generates more robust and high-quality structural constraints compared to previous methodologies. Our comprehensive evaluation across eight real-world datasets demonstrates ILS-CSL's superior performance, setting a new standard in CSL efficacy and showcasing its potential to significantly advance the field of causal discovery. The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is an envisioned observatory of ultra-high-energy particles of cosmic origin, with energies in excess of 100 PeV. GRAND uses large surface arrays of autonomous radio-detection units to look for the radio emission from extensive air showers that are triggered by the interaction of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos in the atmosphere or underground. In particular, for ultra-high-energy neutrinos, the future final phase of GRAND aims to be sensitive enough to discover them in spite of their plausibly tiny flux. Presently, three prototype GRAND radio arrays are in operation: GRANDProto300, in China, GRAND@Auger, in Argentina, and GRAND@Nancay, in France. Their goals are to field-test the design of the radio-detection units, understand the radio background to which they are exposed, and develop tools for diagnostic, data gathering, and data analysis. With the popularity of implicit neural representations, or neural radiance fields (NeRF), there is a pressing need for editing methods to interact with the implicit 3D models for tasks like post-processing reconstructed scenes and 3D content creation. While previous works have explored NeRF editing from various perspectives, they are restricted in editing flexibility, quality, and speed, failing to offer direct editing response and instant preview. The key challenge is to conceive a locally editable neural representation that can directly reflect the editing instructions and update instantly. To bridge the gap, we propose a new interactive editing method and system for implicit representations, called Seal-3D, which allows users to edit NeRF models in a pixel-level and free manner with a wide range of NeRF-like backbone and preview the editing effects instantly. To achieve the effects, the challenges are addressed by our proposed proxy function mapping the editing instructions to the original space of NeRF models in the teacher model and a two-stage training strategy for the student model with local pretraining and global finetuning. Large Language Models (LLMs) exhibit exceptional abilities for causal analysis between concepts in numerous societally impactful domains, including medicine, science, and law. Recent research on LLM performance in various causal discovery and inference tasks has given rise to a new ladder in the classical three-stage framework of causality. In this paper, we advance the current research of LLM-driven causal discovery by proposing a novel framework that combines knowledge-based LLM causal analysis with data-driven causal structure learning. To make LLM more than a query tool and to leverage its power in discovering natural and new laws of causality, we integrate the valuable LLM expertise on existing causal mechanisms into statistical analysis of objective data to build a novel and practical baseline for causal structure learning. We introduce a universal set of prompts designed to extract causal graphs from given variables and assess the influence of LLM prior causality on recovering causal structures from data. We demonstrate the significant enhancement of LLM expertise on the quality of recovered causal structures from data, while also identifying critical challenges and issues, along with potential approaches to address them. As a pioneering study, this paper aims to emphasize the new frontier that LLMs are opening for classical causal discovery and inference, and to encourage the widespread adoption of LLM capabilities in data-driven causal analysis.

Continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (CV-MDI QKD) can defend all attacks on the measurement devices fundamentally. Consequently, higher requirements are put forward for the source of CV-MDI QKD system. However, the imperfections of actual source brings practical security risks to the CV-MDI QKD system. Therefore, the characteristics of the realistic source must be controlled in real time to guarantee the practical security of the CV-MDI QKD system. Here we propose a countermeasure for negative impact introduced by the actual source in the CV-MDI QKD system based on one-time-calibration method, not only eliminating the loophole induced from the relative intensity noise (RIN) which is part of the source noise, but also modeling the source noise thus improving the performance. In particular, three cases in terms of whether the preparation noise of the practical sources are defined or not, where only one of the users or both two users operate monitoring on their respective source outputs, are investigated. The simulation results show that the estimated secret key rate without our proposed scheme are about 10.7 times higher than the realistic rate at 18 km transmission distance when the variance of RIN is only 0.4. What's worse, the difference becomes greater and greater with the increase of the variance of RIN. Thus, our proposed scheme makes sense in further completing the practical security of CV-MDI QKD system. In other words, our work enables CV-MDI QKD system not only to resist all attacks against detectors, but also to close the vulnerability caused by the actual source, thus making the scheme closer to practical security.

Causal structure learning, a prominent technique for encoding cause and effect relationships among variables, through Bayesian Networks (BNs). Merely recovering causal structures from real-world observed data lacks precision, while the development of Large Language Models (LLM) is opening a new frontier of causality. LLM presents strong capability in discovering causal relationships between variables with the "text" inputs defining the investigated variables, leading to a potential new hierarchy and new ladder of causality. We aim an critical issue in the emerging topic of LLM based causal structure learning, to tackle erroneous prior causal statements from LLM, which is seldom considered in the current context of expert dominating prior resources. As a pioneer attempt, we propose a BN learning strategy resilient to prior errors without need of human intervention. Focusing on the edge-level prior, we classify the possible prior errors into three types: order-consistent, order-reversed, and irrelevant, and provide their theoretical impact on the Structural Hamming Distance (SHD) under the presumption of sufficient data. Intriguingly, we discover and prove that only the order-reversed error contributes to an increase in a unique acyclic closed structure, defined as a "quasi-circle". Leveraging this insight, a post-hoc strategy is employed to identify the order-reversed prior error by its impact on the increment of "quasi-circles". Through empirical evaluation on both real and synthetic datasets, we demonstrate our strategy's robustness against prior errors. Graph contrastive learning (GCL) shows great potential in unsupervised graph representation learning. Data augmentation plays a vital role in GCL, and its optimal choice heavily depends on the downstream task. Many GCL methods with automated data augmentation face the risk of insufficient information as they fail to preserve the essential information necessary for the downstream task. To solve this problem, we propose InfoMin-Max for automated Graph contrastive learning (GIMM), which prevents GCL from encoding redundant information and losing essential information. GIMM consists of two major modules: (1) automated graph view generator, which acquires the approximation of InfoMin's optimal views through adversarial training without requiring task-relevant information; (2) view comparison, which learns an excellent encoder by applying InfoMax to view representations. To the best of our knowledge, GIMM is the first method that combines the InfoMin and InfoMax principles in GCL. Besides, GIMM introduces randomness to augmentation, thus stabilizing the model against perturbations. Extensive experiments on unsupervised and semi-supervised learning for node and graph classification demonstrate the superiority of our GIMM over state-of-the-art GCL methods with automated and manual data augmentation.

Effective exploration is believed to positively influence the long-term user experience on recommendation platforms. Determining its exact benefits, however, has been challenging. Regular A/B tests on exploration often measure neutral or even negative engagement metrics while failing to capture its long-term benefits. We here introduce new experiment designs to formally quantify the long-term value of exploration by examining its effects on content corpus, and connecting content corpus growth to the long-term user experience from real-world experiments. Once established the values of exploration, we investigate the Neural Linear Bandit algorithm as a general framework to introduce exploration into any deep learning based ranking systems. We conduct live experiments on one of the largest short-form video recommendation platforms that serves billions of users to validate the new experiment designs, quantify the long-term values of exploration, and to verify the effectiveness of the adopted neural linear bandit algorithm for exploration., Comment: 11 pages, WSDM 2024

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution which can be implemented using only low-cost and off-the-shelf components reveals great potential in the practical large-scale realization. Access network as a modern network necessity, connects multiple end-users to the network backbone. In this work, we demonstrate the first upstream transmission quantum access networks using continuous-variable quantum key distribution. A two-end-user quantum access network is then experimentally realized. Through phase compensation, data synchronization and other technical upgrades, we achieve 390kbps secret key rate of the total network. In addition, we extend the case of two-end-user quantum access network to the case of multiple users, and analyze the network capacity in the case of multiple users by measuring the additive excess noise from different time slots., Comment: 4 pages,3figures

Non-Gaussian modulation can improve the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD). For Gaussian modulated coherent state CV-QKD, photon subtraction can realize non-Gaussian modulation, which can be equivalently implemented by non-Gaussian postselection. However, non-Gaussian reconciliation has not been deeply researched, which is one of the key technologies in CV-QKD. In this paper, we propose a non-Gaussian reconciliation method to obtain identical keys from non-Gaussian data. Multidimensional reconciliation and multi-edge type low density parity check codes (MET-LDPC) are used in non-Gaussian reconciliation scheme, where the layered belief propagation decoding algorithm of MET-LDPC codes is used to reduce the decoding complexity. Furthermore, we compare the error correction performance of Gaussian data and non-Gaussian data. The results show that the error correction performance of non-Gaussian data is better than Gaussian data, where the frame error rate can be reduced by 50% for code rate 0.1 at SNR of 0.1554 and the average iteration number can be reduced by 25%., Comment: 9pages,6figures

The radiation mechanism (thermal photosphere or magnetic synchrotron) and the progenitor of gamma-ray burst (GRB) are under hot debate. Recently discovered, the prompt long-duration ($\sim$ 10 s, normally from the collapse of massive stars) property of GRB 211211A strongly conflicts with its association with a kilonova (normally from the merger of two compact objects, NS-NS, NS-BH, or NS-WD, duration $\lesssim$ 2 s). In this paper, we find the probability photosphere model with a structured jet can satisfactorily explain this peculiar long duration, through the duration stretching effect ($\sim$ 3 times) on the intrinsic longer ($\sim$ 3 s) duration of NS-BH (neutron star and black hole) merger, the observed empirical 2SBPL spectrum (with soft low-energy index $\alpha$ of $\sim$ -1) and its evolution. Also, much evidence of the NS-BH merger origin is found, especially the well fit of the afterglow-subtracted optical-NIR light curves by the significant thermal cocoon emission and the sole thermal red kilonova component.
