3. Association between urinary excretion of protein-bound uremic toxins and upper urinary tract calculus

Abstract

Objective·To investigate the relation between urinary excretion of protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) and upper urinary tract calculus.Methods·Residents aged 18‒80 years in the community of Haitou, Danzhou city in Hainan Province were recruited. Basic information and diet for the last 3 d of the subjects were recorded. Their fasting sera and 24-hour urine samples were collected, and they also underwent ultrasound examination of kidneys and ureters. The subjects with upper urinary calculi detected by ultrasound or a clear history of upper urinary calculi were selected as the calculus group, and the others as the non-calculus group. The biochemical indicators related to the formation of calculus in blood and urine were detected, and the levels of PBUTs, including indoxyl sufate (IS), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and p-cresol sulfate (PCS) in blood and urine, as well as oxalic acid and citric acid in urine were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography. The related factors of upper urinary tract calculus formation were analyzed by multivariate Logistic regression. The correlations of urine PBUTs with urine uric acid, oxalic acid, and citric acid were analyzed by Spearman correlation test.Results·A total of 117 participants were screened out with 54 people in the calculus group and 63 people in the non-calculus group. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of gender, age, serum indicators, and prevalence of complications such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperuricemia/gout. Abstract

Multiple signal classification (MUSIC) has been widely applied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receivers for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. To reduce the cost of radio frequency (RF) chains operating at millimeter-wave bands, hybrid analog-digital structure has been adopted in massive MIMO transceivers. In this situation, the received signals at the antennas are unavailable to the digital receiver, and as a consequence, the spatial covariance matrix (SCM), which is essential in MUSIC algorithm, cannot be obtained using traditional sample average approach. Based on our previous work, we propose a novel algorithm for SCM reconstruction in hybrid massive MIMO systems with multiple RF chains. By switching the analog beamformers to a group of predetermined DOAs, SCM can be reconstructed through the solutions of a set of linear equations. In addition, based on insightful analysis on that linear equations, a low-complexity algorithm, as well as a careful selection of the predetermined DOAs, will be also presented in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can reconstruct the SCM accurately so that MUSIC algorithm can be well used for DOA estimation in hybrid massive MIMO systems with multiple RF chains.

17. Self-Ensembling Contrastive Learning for Semi-Supervised Medical Image Segmentation

Abstract

Deep learning has demonstrated significant improvements in medical image segmentation using a sufficiently large amount of training data with manual labels. Acquiring well-representative labels requires expert knowledge and exhaustive labors. In this paper, we aim to boost the performance of semi-supervised learning for medical image segmentation with limited labels using a self-ensembling contrastive learning technique. To this end, we propose to train an encoder-decoder network at image-level with small amounts of labeled images, and more importantly, we learn latent representations directly at feature-level by imposing contrastive loss on unlabeled images. This method strengthens intra-class compactness and inter-class separability, so as to get a better pixel classifier. Moreover, we devise a student encoder for online learning and an exponential moving average version of it, called teacher encoder, to improve the performance iteratively in a self-ensembling manner. To construct contrastive samples with unlabeled images, two sampling strategies that exploit structure similarity across medical images and utilize pseudo-labels for construction, termed region-aware and anatomical-aware contrastive sampling, are investigated. We conduct extensive experiments on an MRI and a CT segmentation dataset and demonstrate that in a limited label setting, the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance. Moreover, the anatomical-aware strategy that prepares contrastive samples on-the-fly using pseudo-labels realizes better contrastive regularization on feature representations.

Abstract

While propagation-based approaches have achieved state-of-the-art performance for video object segmentation, the literature lacks a fair comparison of different methods using the same settings. In this paper, we carry out an empirical study for propagation-based methods. We view these approaches from a unified perspective and conduct detailed ablation study for core methods, input cues, multi-object combination and training strategies. 39. Identification of Myocardial Scarring Using Contrast‐Free Cardiac MRI in Patients With Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases.

Abstract

Background: Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) cardiac MRI is the method of choice in revealing the presence of myocardial scarring, but its availability remains limited in clinical practice. Purpose: To assess myocardial scarring in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) using contrast‐free cardiac MRI with a radiomics model. Study Type: Retrospective. Population: One hundred ninety‐two patients (mean age, 41 years ± 15, 62 men) with or without ARDs, grouped into a training set of 153 patients and a testing set of 39 patients. Field Strength/Sequence: 3.0 T/ cine imaging with a balanced steady‐state free precession sequence, T1 mapping with a modified Look‐Locker inversion recovery sequence, and LGE imaging with a phase‐sensitive inversion recovery gradient echo sequence. Assessment: LGE assessment was the reference standard for identifying myocardial scarring. Based on motion features extracted from cine images and tissue characterization features extracted from native T1 maps, a fully automated radiomics model with T1, cine MRI, or combined inputs was developed. Statistical Tests: Logistic regression model was used to detect myocardial scarring using contrast‐free cardiac MRI parameters. Receiver operating characteristic curves were analyzed to assess the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in detecting myocardial scarring. Sensitivities of the models were further assessed in patients with various myocardial scarring proportions. Z‐statistic and dice coefficient were assessed to compare the performance. P‐values <0.05 were considered significant. Results: The multivariable regression model exhibited an accuracy of 85.3%, a sensitivity of 93.5%, and a specificity of 50.0%. The radiomics model with T1 and cine MRI input exhibited an accuracy of 75.7%, a sensitivity of 60.9%, and a specificity of 85.5%. Moreover, the radiomics model showed a sensitivity of 90.9% among patients with >25% myocardial scarring. Data Conclusions: The proposed radiomics model allowed for the identification of myocardial scarring similar to LGE, but on contrast‐free cardiac MRI in patients with ARDs. 43. Interleukin-4-Loaded Heparin Hydrogel Regulates Macrophage Polarization to Promote Osteogenic Differentiation

Abstract

In bone tissue engineering, biological scaffolds are designed with structural and functional properties that closely resemble the extracellular environment, aiming to establish a microenvironment conducive to osteogenesis. Macrophages hold significant potential for promoting osteogenesis and modulating the biological behavior of tumor cells. Multiple coculture experiments of macrophages and osteoblasts have demonstrated that macrophage polarization significantly impacts osteogenesis. Therefore, exploring bone biomaterials that can modulate macrophage polarization holds great clinical significance. In this study, heparin was modified with maleimide and was used as a raw material to form a hydrogel with 4-am-PEG-SH. The compound was used to polarize macrophages and promote osteogenesis after combining with interleukin 4 (IL-4) by taking advantage of the electronegativity of heparin. The results revealed overexpressed M2 macrophage-related phenotypic genes and cocultivation with MC3T3-E1 cells demonstrated the osteogenesis-promoting effect of the loaded IL-4 heparin hydrogel. Previous research reported that hydrogel loaded with IL-4 can be used as a biomaterial for osteogenesis promotion. Heparin materials used in this paper are derived from clinically anticoagulant drugs and feature a simple operation. The synthesized hydrogel effectively binds cytokines, regulates macrophages to induce osteogenesis and has many potential clinical applications.
