We present the scintillation velocity measurements of FRB~20201124A from the FAST observations, which reveal an annual variation. This annual variation is further supported by changes detected in the scintillation arc as observed from the secondary spectrum. We attribute the annual velocity variation to the presence of a moderately anisotropic scattering screen located at a distance of 0.4$\pm$0.1~kpc from Earth. Our results prove that the scintillation of this FRB is mainly caused by material close to Earth on a Galactic scale. However, scintillation observations of other FRBs may expose their surrounding environment or uncover possible orbital motion if scintillation is caused by materials in their host galaxy., Comment: 4 figures, 1 tables, accepted for publication in ApJL

Pulsar electrodynamics could be relevant to the physics of stellar surface, which remains poorly understood for more than half a centenary and is difficult to probe due to the absence of direct and clear observational evidence. Nevertheless, highly-sensitive telescopes (e.g., China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope, FAST) may play an essential role in solving the problem since the predicted surface condition would have quite different characteristics in some models of pulsar structure, especially after the establishment of the standard model of particle physics. For instance, small hills (or ``zit'') may exist on solid strangeon star surface with rigidity, preferential discharge, i.e., gap sparking, may occur around the hills in the polar cap region. In this work, with the 110-min polarization observation of PSR B0950+08 targeted by FAST, we report that the gap sparking is significantly non-symmetrical to the meridian plane on which the rotational and magnetic axes lie. It is then speculated that this asymmetry could be the result of preferential sparking around zits which might rise randomly on pulsar surface. As one of the paradigm examples to probe into pulsar magnetospheric dynamics, PSR B0943+10 (J0946+0951) manifests representatively, showing mode switch, orthogonal polarization and subpulse drifting. Both integrated and single pulses are studied with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The mode switch phenomenon of this pulsar is studied using an eigen-mode searching method, based on parameter estimation. A phase space evolution for the pulsar's mode switch shows a strange-attractor-like pattern. The radiative geometry is proposed by fitting polarization position angles with the rotating vector model. The pulsar pulse profile is then mapped to the sparking location on pulsar surface, and the differences between the main pulse's and the precursor component's radiative process may explain the X-ray's synchronization with radio mode switch. Detailed single pulse studies on B0943+10's orthogonally polarized radiation are presented, which may support for certain models of radiative transfer of polarized emission. B0943+10's B and Q modes evolve differently with frequency and with proportions of orthogonal modes, which indicates possible magnetospheric changes during mode switch. An extra component is found in B mode, and it shows distinct polarization and modulation properties compared with main part of B mode pulse component. For Q mode pulse profile, the precursor and the main pulse components are orthogonally polarized, showing that the precursor component radiated farther from the pulsar could be radiated in O-mode (X-mode) if the main pulse originates from low altitude in X-mode (O-mode). The puzzling mechanism of coherent radio emission remains unknown, but fortunately, repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) provide a precious opportunity, with extremely bright subpulses created in a clear and vacuum-like pulsar magnetosphere. FRBs are millisecond-duration signals that are highly dispersed at distant galaxies but with uncertain physical origin(s). Coherent curvature radiation by bunches has already been proposed for repeating FRBs. The charged particles are created during central star's quakes, which can form bunches streaming out along curved magnetic field lines, so as to trigger FRBs. The nature of narrow-band radiation with time-frequency drifting can be a natural consequence that bunches could be observed at different times with different curvatures. Additionally, high linear-polarization can be seen if the line of sight is confined to the beam angle, whereas the emission could be highly circular-polarized if off-beam. Magnetars are neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields, frequently powering high-energy activity in X-rays. Pulsed radio emission following some X-ray outbursts have been detected, albeit its physical origin is unclear. It has long been speculated that the origin of magnetars' radio signals is different from those from canonical pulsars, although convincing evidence is still lacking. Five months after magnetar SGR 1935+2154's X-ray outburst and its associated Fast Radio Burst (FRB) 20200428, a radio pulsar phase was discovered. Here we report the discovery of X-ray spectral hardening associated with the emergence of periodic radio pulsations from SGR 1935+2154 and a detailed analysis of the properties of the radio pulses. The complex radio pulse morphology, which contains both narrow-band emission and frequency drifts, has not been seen before in other magnetars, but is similar to those of repeating FRBs - even though the luminosities are many orders of magnitude different. The observations suggest that radio emission originates from the outer magnetosphere of the magnetar, and the surface heating due to the bombardment of inward-going particles from the radio emission region is responsible for the observed X-ray spectral hardening., Comment: 47 pages, 11 figures

We studied the frequency and critical mass accretion rate of millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) using a one-zone X-ray burst model. The surface gravity is specified by two kinds of equation of states: neutron star (NS) and strange star (SS). The base flux, $Q_{b}$, is set in the range of 0-2 MeV nucleon$^{-1}$. It is found that the frequency of mHz QPO is positively correlated to the surface gravity but negatively to the base heating. The helium mass fraction has a significant influence on the oscillation frequency and luminosity. The observed 7-9 mHz QPOs can be either explained by a heavy NS/light SS with a small base flux or a heavy SS with a large base flux. As base flux increases, the critical mass accretion rate for marginally stable burning is found to be lower. Meanwhile, the impact of metallicity on the properties of mHz QPOs was investigated using one-zone model. It shows that both the frequency and critical mass accretion rate decrease as metallicity increases. An accreted NS/SS with a higher base flux and metallicity, combined with a lower surface gravity and helium mass fraction, could be responsible for the observed critical mass accretion rate ($\dot{m}\simeq 0.3\dot{m}_{\rm Edd}$). The accreted fuel would be in stable burning if base flux is over than $\sim$2 MeV nucleon$^{-1}$. The megajansky radio burst, FRB 20200428, and other bright radio bursts detected from the Galactic source SGR J1935+2154 suggest that magnetars can make fast radio bursts (FRBs), but the emission site and mechanism of FRB-like bursts are still unidentified. Here we report the emergence of a radio pulsar phase of the magnetar five months after FRB 20200428. 795 pulses were detected in 16.5 hours over 13 days by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio telescope, with luminosities about eight decades fainter than FRB 20200428. The pulses were emitted in a narrow phase window anti-aligned with the X-ray pulsation profile observed by the X-ray telescopes. The bursts, conversely, appear in random phases. This dichotomy suggests that radio pulses originate from a fixed region within the magnetosphere, but bursts occur in random locations and are possibly associated with explosive events in a dynamically evolving magnetosphere. This paper presents a low-cost network architecture for training large language models (LLMs) at hyperscale. We study the optimal parallelization strategy of LLMs and propose a novel datacenter network design tailored to LLM's unique communication pattern. We show that LLM training generates sparse communication patterns in the network and, therefore, does not require any-to-any full-bisection network to complete efficiently. As a result, our design eliminates the spine layer in traditional GPU clusters. We name this design a Rail-only network and demonstrate that it achieves the same training performance while reducing the network cost by 38% to 77% and network power consumption by 37% to 75% compared to a conventional GPU datacenter. Our architecture also supports Mixture-of-Expert (MoE) models with all-to-all communication through forwarding, with only 4.1% to 5.6% completion time overhead for all-to-all traffic. We study the failure robustness of Rail-only networks and provide insights into the performance impact of different network and training parameters.

The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. The equilibrium configuration of a solid strange star in the final inspiral phase with another compact object is generally discussed, and the starquake-related issue is revisited, for a special purpose to understand the precursor emission of binary compact star merger events (e.g., that of GRB211211A). As the binary system inspirals inward due to gravitational wave radiation, the ellipticity of the solid strangeon star increases due to the growing tidal field of its compact companion. Elastic energy is hence accumulated during the inspiral stage which might trigger a starquake before the merger when exceeds a critical value. The energy released during such starquakes is calculated and compared to the precursor observation of GRB211211A. The result shows that the energy might be insufficient for binary strangeon-star case unless the entire solid strangeon star shatters, and hence favors a black hole-strangeon star scenario for GRB211211A. Type I X-ray bursts are rapidly brightening phenomena triggered by thermonuclear burning on accreting layer of a neutron star (NS). The light curves represent the physical properties of NSs and the nuclear reactions on the proton-rich nuclei. The numerical treatments of the accreting NS and physics of the NS interior are not established, which shows uncertainty in modelling for observed X-ray light curves. In this study, we investigate theoretical X-ray-burst models, compared with burst light curves with GS~1826-24 observations. We focus on the impacts of the NS mass, the NS radius, and base-heating on the NS surface using the MESA code. We find a monotonic correlation between the NS mass and the parameters of the light curve. The higher the mass, the longer the recurrence time and the greater the peak luminosity. While the larger the radius, the longer the recurrence time, the peak luminosity remains nearly constant. In the case of increasing base heating, both the recurrence time and peak luminosity decrease. We also examine the above results using with a different numerical code, HERES, based on general relativity and consider the central NS. We find that the burst rate, burst energy and burst strength are almost same in two X-ray burst codes by adjusting the base-heat parameter in MESA (the relative errors $\lesssim5\%$), while the duration time and the rise time are significantly different between (the relative error is possibly $\sim50\%$). We report the discovery of a dark companion to 2MASS J15274848+3536572 with an orbital period of 6.14 hr. Combining the radial velocity from LAMOST observations and modelling of the multiband light curve, one obtains a mass function of $\simeq 0.131~\rm M_{\odot}$, an inclination of $45.20^\circ{}^{+0.13^{\circ}}_{-0.20^{\circ}}$, and a mass ratio of $0.631^{+0.014}_{-0.003}$, which demonstrate the binary nature of the dark companion with mass of $0.98 \pm 0.03\rm M_{\odot}$ and a main-sequence K9-M0 star of $0.62 \pm 0.01~\rm M_{\odot}$. LAMOST optical spectra at a range of orbital phases reveal extra-peaked Halpha emission that suggests the presence of an accretion disk. The dark companion does not seem to be a white dwarf because of the lack of any observed dwarf nova outbursts in the long-term data archive, although a magnetic white dwarf cannot be excluded. Alternatively, we propose a scenario wherein the dark companion is a neutron star, but we have not detected radio pulsations or a single pulse from the system with the FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope), which hints at a radio-quiet compact object. If the dark companion is identified as a neutron star, it will be the nearest ( ~ 118 pc) and lightest neutron star. Furthermore, a kinematic analysis of the system's orbit in the galaxy may suggest its supernova event is associated with the radionuclide $^{60} \rm Fe$ signal observed from the deep-sea crusts. More-versatile memory is strongly desired for end-users to protect their information in the information era. In particular, bit-level switchable memory, from rewritable to read-only function, allows end-users to prevent any important data from being tampered with. However, no such switchable memory has been reported. We demonstrated the rewritable function can be converted into a read-only function by a sufficiently large current pulse in a U-shaped domain-wall memory composed of an asymmetric Pt/Co/Ru/AlOx heterostructure with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Wafer-scale switchable magnetic domain-wall memory arrays on 4-inch Si/SiO2 substrate were designed and fabricated. Furthermore, we confirmed the information can be stored in rewritable or read-only state at bit-level according to the security-needs of end-users. Our work not only provides a solution for personal confidential data, but also paves the way for developing multi-functional spintronic devices.

We consider the problem of distilling efficient network topologies for collective communications. We provide an algorithmic framework for constructing direct-connect topologies optimized for the latency vs. bandwidth trade-off associated with the workload. Our approach synthesizes many different topologies and schedules for a given cluster size and degree and then identifies the appropriate topology and schedule for a given workload. Our algorithms start from small, optimal base topologies and associated communication schedules and use techniques that can be iteratively applied to derive much larger topologies and schedules. Additionally, we incorporate well-studied large-scale graph topologies into our algorithmic framework by producing efficient collective schedules for them using a novel polynomial-time algorithm. Our evaluation uses multiple testbeds and large-scale simulations to demonstrate significant performance benefits from our derived topologies and schedules.

We propose TopoOpt, a novel direct-connect fabric for deep neural network (DNN) training workloads. TopoOpt co-optimizes the distributed training process across three dimensions: computation, communication, and network topology. We demonstrate the mutability of AllReduce traffic, and leverage this property to construct efficient network topologies for DNN training jobs. TopoOpt then uses an alternating optimization technique and a group theory-inspired algorithm called TotientPerms to find the best network topology and routing plan, together with a parallelization strategy. We build a fully functional 12-node direct-connect prototype with remote direct memory access (RDMA) forwarding at 100 Gbps. Large-scale simulations on real distributed training models show that, compared to similar-cost Fat-Tree interconnects, TopoOpt reduces DNN training time by up to 3.4x.

Fast spinning (e.g., sub-second) neutron star with ultra-strong magnetic fields (or so-called magnetar) is one of the promising origins of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs). Here we discuss circularly polarised emissions produced by propagation effects in the magnetosphere of fast spinning magnetars. We argue that the polarisation-limiting region is well beyond the light cylinder, suggesting that wave mode coupling effects are unlikely to produce strong circular polarisation for fast spinning magnetars. Cyclotron absorption could be significant if the secondary plasma density is high. However, high degrees of circular polarisation can only be produced with large asymmetries in electrons and positrons. We draw attention to the non-detection of circular polarisation in current observations of known repeating FRBs. We suggest that the circular polarisation of FRBs could provide key information on their origins and help distinguish different radiation mechanisms., Comment: ApJ accepted

It is conjectured that coherent re-emission of cyclotron resonance absorption could result in pulsar giant pulses. This conjecture seems reasonable as it can naturally explain the distribution of pulsars with giant pulses on the $P$-$\dot{P}$ diagram., Comment: Submitted to RAA

The luminosity function of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), defined as the event rate per unit cosmic co-moving volume per unit luminosity, may help to reveal the possible origins of FRBs and design the optimal searching strategy. With the Bayesian modelling, we measure the FRB luminosity function using 46 known FRBs. Our Bayesian framework self-consistently models the selection effects, including the survey sensitivity, the telescope beam response, and the electron distributions from Milky Way / the host galaxy / local environment of FRBs. Different from the previous companion paper, we pay attention to the FRB event rate density and model the event counts of FRB surveys based on the Poisson statistics. Assuming a Schechter luminosity function form, we infer (at the 95% confidence level) that the characteristic FRB event rate density at the upper cut-off luminosity $L^*=2.9_{-1.7}^{+11.9}\times10^{44}\,\rm erg\, s^{-1}$ is $\phi^*=339_{-313}^{+1074}\,\rm Gpc^{-3}\, yr^{-1}$, the power-law index is $\alpha=-1.79_{-0.35}^{+0.31}$, and the lower cut-off luminosity is $L_0\le9.1\times10^{41}\,\rm erg\, s^{-1}$. The event rate density of FRBs is found to be $3.5_{-2.4}^{+5.7}\times10^4\,\rm Gpc^{-3}\, yr^{-1}$ above $10^{42}\,\rm erg\, s^{-1}$, $5.0_{-2.3}^{+3.2}\times10^3\,\rm Gpc^{-3}\, yr^{-1}$ above $10^{43}\,\rm erg\, s^{-1}$, and $3.7_{-2.0}^{+3.5}\times10^2\,\rm Gpc^{-3}\, yr^{-1}$ above $10^{44}\,\rm erg\, s^{-1}$. As a result, we find that, for searches conducted at 1.4 GHz, the optimal diameter of single-dish radio telescopes to detect FRBs is 30-40 m. Low precision training is one of the most popular strategies for deploying the deep model on limited hardware resources. Fixed point implementation of DCNs has the potential to alleviate complexities and facilitate potential deployment on embedded hardware. However, most low precision training solution is based on a mixed precision strategy. In this paper, we have presented an ablation study on different low precision training strategy and propose a solution for IEEE FP-16 format throughout the training process. We tested the ResNet50 on 128 GPU cluster on ImageNet-full dataset. We have viewed that it is not essential to use FP32 format to train the deep models. We have viewed that communication cost reduction, model compression, and large-scale distributed training are three coupled problems.

The fast radio burst, FRB 171019, was relatively bright when discovered first by ASKAP, but was identified as a repeater with three faint bursts detected later by GBT and CHIME. These observations lead to the discussion of whether the first bright burst shares the same mechanism with the following repeating bursts. A model of binary neutron star merger is proposed for FRB 171019, in which the first bright burst occurred during the merger event, while the subsequent repeating bursts are starquake-induced, and generally fainter, as the energy release rate for the starquakes can hardly exceed that of the catastrophic merger event. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are short duration ($\sim$millisecond) radio transients with cosmological origin. The simple sharp features of the FRB signal have been utilized to probe two fundamental laws of physics, namey, testing Einstein's weak equivalence principle and constraining the rest mass of the photon. Recently, \cite{hessels18} found that after correcting for dispersive delay, some of the bursts in FRB 121102 have complex time-frequency structures that include sub-pulses with a time-frequency downward drifting property. Using the delay time between sub-pulses in FRB 121102, here we show that the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$ is the same for photons with different energies to the level of $\left|\gamma_1-\gamma_2\right|<2.5\times 10^{-16}$, which is 1000 times better than previous constraints from FRBs using similar methods. We also obtain a stringent constraint on the photon mass, $m_{\gamma} < 5.1\times10^{-48}$ g, which is 10 times smaller than previous best limits on the photon mass derived through the velocity dispersion method., Comment: 5 pages, 1 table, 1 figure

Region proposal mechanisms are essential for existing deep learning approaches to object detection in images. Although they can generally achieve a good detection performance under normal circumstances, their recall in a scene with extreme cases is unacceptably low. This is mainly because bounding box annotations contain much environment noise information, and non-maximum suppression (NMS) is required to select target boxes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the first anchor-free and NMS-free object detection model called weakly supervised multimodal annotation segmentation (WSMA-Seg), which utilizes segmentation models to achieve an accurate and robust object detection without NMS. In WSMA-Seg, multimodal annotations are proposed to achieve an instance-aware segmentation using weakly supervised bounding boxes; we also develop a run-data-based following algorithm to trace contours of objects. In addition, we propose a multi-scale pooling segmentation (MSP-Seg) as the underlying segmentation model of WSMA-Seg to achieve a more accurate segmentation and to enhance the detection accuracy of WSMA-Seg. Experimental results on multiple datasets show that the proposed WSMA-Seg approach outperforms the state-of-the-art detectors., Comment: 10 Pages

Multi-face alignment aims to identify geometry structures of multiple faces in an image, and its performance is essential for the many practical tasks, such as face recognition, face tracking, and face animation. In this work, we present a fast bottom-up multi-face alignment approach, which can simultaneously localize multi-person facial landmarks with high precision.In more detail, our bottom-up architecture maps the landmarks to the high-dimensional space with which landmarks of all faces are represented. By clustering the features belonging to the same face, our approach can align the multi-person facial landmarks synchronously.Extensive experiments show that our method can achieve high performance in the multi-face landmark alignment task while our model is extremely fast. Moreover, we propose a new multi-face dataset to compare the speed and precision of bottom-up face alignment method with top-down methods. The newly discovered second repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source, FRB 180814.J0422+73, was reported to exhibit a time-frequency downward drifting pattern, which is also seen in the first repeater FRB 121102. We propose a generic geometrical model to account for the observed downward drifting of sub-pulse frequency, within the framework of coherent curvature radiation by bunches of electrons or positrons in the magnetosphere of a neutron star. A sudden trigger event excites these coherent bunches of charged particles, which stream outwards along open field lines. As the field lines sweep across the line of sight, the bunches seen later have traveled farther into the less curved part of the magnetic field lines, thus emitting at lower frequencies. We use this model to explain the time-frequency downward drifting in two FRB generation scenarios, the transient pulsar-like sparking from the inner gap region of a slowly rotating neutron star, and the externally-triggered magnetosphere reconfiguration known as the "cosmic comb"., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Magnetars are a class of highly magnetized, slowly rotating neutron stars, only a small fraction of which exhibit radio emission. We propose that the coherent radio curvature emission is generated by net charge fluctuations from a twist-current-carrying bundle (the j-bundle) in the scenario of magnetar-quake. Two-photon pair production is triggered, which requires a threshold voltage not too much higher than $10^9$ V in the current-carrying bundle, and which can be regarded as the `open field lines' of a magnetar. Continued untwisting of the magnetosphere maintains change fluctuations, and hence coherent radio emission, in the progressively shrinking j-bundle, which lasts for years until the radio beam is too small to be detected. The modeled peak flux of radio emission and the flat spectrum are generally consistent with the observations. We show that this time-dependent, conal-beam, radiative model can interpret the variable radio pulsation behaviors and the evolution of the X-ray hot spot of the radio transient magnetar XTE J1810$-$197 and the high-$B$ pulsar/AXP PSR J1622$-$4950. Radio emission with luminosity of $\lesssim10^{31}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$ and high-frequency oscillations are expected to be detected for a magnetar after an X-ray outburst. Giant pulses (GPs) are extremely bright individual pulses of radio pulsar. In microbursts of Crab pulsar, which is an active GP emitter, zebra-pattern-like spectral structures are observed, which are reminiscent of the `zebra bands' that are observed in type IV solar radio flares. However, band spacing linearly increases with the band center frequency of $\sim5-30$\,GHz. In this study, we propose that the Crab pulsar GP can originate from the coherent instability of plasma near a light cylinder. Further, the growth of coherent instability can be attributed to the resonance observed between the cyclotron-resonant-excited wave and the background plasma oscillation. The particles can be injected into the closed-field line regions owing to magnetic reconnection near a light cylinder. These particles introduce a large amount of free energy that further causes cyclotron-resonant instability, which grows and amplifies radiative waves at frequencies close to the electron cyclotron harmonics that exhibit zebra-pattern-like spectral band structures. Further, these structures can be modulated by the resonance between the cyclotron-resonant-excited wave and the background plasma oscillation. In this scenario, the band structures of the Crab pulsar can be well fitted by a coherent instability model, where the plasma density of a light cylinder should be $\sim10^{13-15}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$, with an estimated gradient of $>5.5\times10^5\,\rm{cm^{-4}}$. This process may be accompanied by high-energy emissions. Since its initial discovery, the Fast radio burst (FRB) FRB 121102 has been found to be repeating with millisecond-duration pulses. Very recently, 15 new bursts were detected by the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) during its continous monitoring observations. In this letter, we show that the burst energy distribution has a power law form which is very similar to the Gutenberg-Richter law of earthquakes. In addition, the waiting time of the burst has a Gaussian distribution, which is also a distinctive feature of earthquakes. These findings suggest that the repeating FRB pulses may originate from the starquakes of a pulsar. Noting that the soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) also exhibit such distributions, the FRB could be powered by some mechanism associated with the SGRs, including crustal acitivity of a magnetar, solidification-induced stresss of a young strangeon star, and oscillation-drivern magnetic activities of a slowly rotating pulsar. Calvera is a $59\,\mathrm{ms}$ isolated pulsar, being unique due to its non-detection in radio, optical and gamma-rays but the purely thermal emission in soft X-rays. It is suggested that Calvera could be an ordinary middle-aged pulsar with significant magnetospheric activity at a large distance. Alternatively, it is proposed in this paper that Calvera is a low-mass strangeon star with inactive magnetosphere (dead). In this scenario, we jointly fit the spectra obtained by the {\it XMM-Newton} Observatory and the {\it Chandra} X-ray Observatory with the strangeon star atmosphere model. The spectral model is successful in explaining the radiation properties of Calvera and X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars, both showing similar observation features. Within the dead pulsar picture, Calvera might be of high temperature at $0.67\,\mathrm{keV}$, possessing a small stellar radius $R\la4\,\mathrm{km}$ and a presumably small magnetic field $B\la10^{11}\,\mathrm{G}$ and is probably braked by the fall-back disk accretion. Future advanced facilities may provide unique opportunities to know the real nature of Calvera.

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is a topologically nontrivial phase, characterized by a non-zero Chern number defined in the bulk and chiral edge states in the boundary. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the presence of the QAH effect in 1T-YN$_2$ monolayer, which was recently predicted to be a Dirac half metal without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We show that the inclusion of SOC opens up a large nontrivial band gap of nearly $0.1$ eV in the electronic band structure. This results in the nontrivial bulk topology which is confirmed by the calculation of Berry curvature, anomalous Hall conductance and the presence of chiral edge states. Remarkably, a high Chern number $C = 3$ is found, and there are three corresponding gapless chiral edge states emerging inside the bulk gap. Our results open a new avenue in searching for QAH insulators with high temperature and high Chern numbers, which can have nontrivial practical applications.

X-ray-dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs), also known as the Magnificent Seven, exhibits a Planck-like soft X-ray spectrum. In the optical/ultraviolet(UV) band, there is an excess of radiation compared to the extrapolation from the X-ray spectrum. A model of bremsstrahlung emission from a nonuniform plasma atmosphere is proposed in the regime of a strangeon star to explain the optical/UV excess and its spectral deviation. The nonuniform atmosphere is formed by the accretion of interstellar matter which moves along the magnetic field lines to polar caps, and these particles may spread out of the pole regions. The modeled electron temperatures are $\sim100-200$ eV with radiation radii $R_{\rm opt}^{\infty}\sim5-14$ km. The spectra of five sources (RX J0720.4--3125, RX J0806.4--4123, RX J1308.6+2127, RX J1605.3+3249, RX J1856.5--3754) from optical/UV to X-ray bands could be well fitted by the radiative model, and exhibit gaussian absorption lines at $\sim 100-500$ eV as would be expected.
