Relativistic polarized electron beams can find applications in broad areas of fundamental physics. Here, we propose for the first time that electron spin polarization can be realized efficiently via collective beam-target interactions. When a relativistic unpolarized electron beam is incident onto the surface of a solid target with a grazing angle, strong magnetic fields are induced at the target surface due to the formation of a high reflux of target electrons. This results in violent beam self-focusing and corresponding beam density increase via magnetic pinching. The pinched dense beam in turn further enhances the magnetic fields to the level of a few Giga-Gauss, which is high enough to trigger strong synchrotron radiation of ultrarelativistic electrons. During the interaction, electron spin polarization develops along the magnetic field direction, which is achieved via radiative spin flips in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. As a consequence, the incident electron beam can be effectively polarized via the spin-dependent radiation reaction, for example, the mean polarization of electrons with energy less than 2 GeV can reach above 50% for an initial 5GeV beam. This provides a robust way for the development of polarized electron sources.

Two-color laser induced plasma filamentation in air could serve as tabletop sources of broadband terahertz (THz) pulses. Ubiquitous air in the earth facilitates its widespread utilities, particularly, in wireless communication and remote sensing, exploiting the unique advantage of the air-based scheme that the THz sources can be delivered over standoff distances via the pump laser propagation in air. However, the THz emission pattern inevitably has a conical angular profile with a dip in the propagation axis, therefore, THz energy concentration, propagation directionality, and accuracy of signal demodulation are significantly impaired, greatly limiting its direct applications. Here, we successfully eliminate the unfavorable conical profile by experiments and meanwhile enhance THz directionality and intensity by 17 folds by use of abruptly-autofocusing laser beams. Our theory and simulations show that these observations are attributed to efficient suppression of the dephasing effect appearing in previous investigations with ordinary Gaussian laser beams. This scheme is easily accessible since the abruptly-autofocusing beam can be achieved by imposing a spatial light modulator on the input Gaussian beam. Many studies have shown that high-energy $\gamma$-photon beams can be efficiently generated via nonlinear Compton scattering driven by laser pulses with intensities $> 10^{22}\rm{W/cm^2}$ recently available in laboratories. Here, we propose a laserless scheme to efficiently generate high-energy polarized $\gamma$-photon beams by collision of two ultrarelativistic electron beams. The self-generated field of a dense driving electron beam provides the strong deflection field for the other ultrarelativistic seeding electron beam. A QED Monte Carlo code based on the locally constant field approximation is employed to simulate the collision process, and the polarization properties of produced $\gamma$ photons are investigated. The simulation results and theoretical analysis indicate that the photon polarization, including both linear and circular polarizations, can be tuned by changing the initial polarization of the seeding beam. If an unpolarized seeding beam is used, linearly polarized photons with an average polarization of 55\% can be obtained. If the seeding beam is transversely (longitudinally) polarized, the linear (circular) polarization of photons above 3 GeV can reach 90\% (67\%), which is favorable for highly polarized, high-energy $\gamma$ photon sources., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Stable transport of laser beams in highly over-dense plasmas is of significance in fast ignition of inertial confinement fusion, relativistic electrons generation, and powerful electromagnetic emission, but hard to realize. Early in 1996, Harris proposed an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) mechanism, analogous to the concept in atom physics, to transport a low-frequency (LF) laser in over-dense plasmas aided by a high-frequency pump laser. However, subsequent investigations show that EIT cannot occur in real plasmas with boundaries. Here, our particle-in-cell simulations show that EIT can occur in strongly-relativistic regime and results in stable propagation of a LF laser in bounded plasmas with tens of its critical density. A relativistic three-wave coupling model is developed, and the criteria and frequency passband for EIT occurrence are presented. The passband is sufficiently wide in strongly-relativistic regime, allowing EIT to work sustainably. Nevertheless, it is narrowed to nearly an isolated point in weakly-relativistic regime, which can explain the quenching of EIT in bounded plasmas found in previous investigations.

During the ultraintense laser interaction with solids (overdense plasmas), the competition between two possible quantum electrodynamics (QED) mechanisms responsible for $e^\pm$ pair production, i.e., linear and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (BW) processes, remains to be studied. Here, we have implemented the linear BW process via a Monte Carlo algorithm into the QED particle-in-cell (PIC) code YUNIC, enabling us to self-consistently investigate both pair production mechanisms in the plasma environment. By a series of 2D QED-PIC simulations, the transition from the linear to the nonlinear BW process is observed with the increase of laser intensities in the typical configuration of a linearly polarized laser interaction with solid targets. A critical normalized laser amplitude about $a_0\sim$ 400-500 is found under a large range of preplasma scale lengths, below which the linear BW process dominates over the nonlinear BW process. This work provides a practicable technique to model linear QED processes via integrated QED-PIC simulations. After the successful fusion ignition at National Ignition Facility, seeking for a high-gain fusion scheme becomes the next hot-spot in inertial confinement fusion community. Fast ignition provides an alternative due to its potential to reduce the energy of driven lasers and achieve higher target gain, whose core step is generating fast electron beam using picosecond lasers. The properties of the electron beam, such as energy spectra, determines the succeed heating process and the yield. In this study, with 2D particle-in-cell simulations, we find that the energy transfer ratio would significantly increase, and the energy spectra would be lifted up in the dual-color injecting scheme, where an extra weak low-frequency laser is injected with the main pulse. These phenomena are attributed to the longitudinal electric field modulation in low-density region and electromagnetically-induced-transparency process in the microchannels formed near the critical surface. Our results can be applied to fast ignition schemes and experimental designs of super-hot electron generation with different pulse durations. For example, in the DCI project with a fast ignition scheme, such a dual-color intense picosecond laser facility is under construction to control the fast electron generation and enhance the laser transparency., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

Relativistic positron sources with high spin polarization have important applications in nuclear and particle physics and many frontier fields. However, it is challenging to produce dense polarized positrons. Here we present a simple and effective method to achieve such a positron source by directly impinging a relativistic high-density electron beam on the surface of a solid target. During the interaction, a strong return current of plasma electrons is induced and subsequently asymmetric quasistatic magnetic fields as high as megatesla are generated along the target surface. This gives rise to strong radiative spin flips and multiphoton processes, thus leading to efficient generation of copious polarized positrons. With three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate the production of a dense highly-polarized multi-GeV positron beam with an average spin polarization above 40% and nC-scale charge per shot. This offers a novel route for the studies of laserless strong-field quantum electrodynamics physics and for the development of high-energy polarized positron sources.

Quasi-monoenergetic GeV-scale protons are predicted to efficiently generate via radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) when the foil thickness is matched with the laser intensity, e.g., $L_{mat}$ at several nm to 100 nm with $10^{19}-10^{22} \rm ~W cm^{-2}$ available in laboratory. However, non-monoenergetic protons with much lower energies than prediction were usually observed in RPA experiments, because of too small foil thickness which is hard to bear insufficient laser contrast and foil surface roughness. Besides the technical problems, we here find that there is an upper-limit thickness $L_{up}$ derived from the requirement that the laser energy density should dominate over the ion source, and $L_{up}$ is lower than $ L_{mat}$ with the intensity below $10^{22} \rm~ W cm^{-2}$, which causes inefficient or unsteady RPA. As the intensity is enhanced to $\geq 10^{23} \rm ~W cm^{-2}$ provided by 10-100 PW laser facilities, $L_{up}$ can significantly exceed $L_{mat}$ and therefore RPA becomes efficient. In this regime, $L_{mat}$ acts as a lower-limit thickness for efficient RPA, so the matching thickness can be extended to a continuous range from $L_{mat}$ to $L_{up}$; the range can reach micrometers, within which foil thickness is adjustable. This makes RPA steady and meanwhile the above technical problems can be overcome. Particle-in-cell simulation shows that multi-GeV quasi-monoenergetic proton beams can be steadily generated and the fluctuation of the energy peaks and the energy conversation efficiency remains stable although the thickness is taken in a larger range with increasing intensity. The two-color laser field scheme for broad-band terahertz (THz) radiation from air has been intensively and broadly investigated due to the simplicity in technology and relative high yield efficiency. Experiments showed that the detected THz angular distribution is usually conical with a dip in the laser propagation axis which is unfavorable for its application, and the formation of an oscillating tail in the THz waveform has not yet been well understood. Here, we develop an electric field element interference model in which each local current source has a phase velocity determined by the laser pulse and a Gaussian temporal profile, rather than an ideal point source, as well as the current oscillation caused by the plasma dynamics is considered. By introducing the temporal interference, effects of the phase velocity and the Gaussian profile of the current can correct the THz angular distribution. Therefore, by adjusting the laser pulse duration and the group velocity, the THz angular distribution can be controlled and the dip could be even eliminated. Besides, the plasma dynamics can result in the formation of an oscillating tail in the THz waveform and sunken spikes in the corresponding spectrum. This is similar to the experimental results which are usually explained by the water vapor absorption. Laser-driven ion accelerators have the advantages of compact size, high density, and short bunch duration over conventional accelerators. Nevertheless, it is still challenging to generate ion beams with quasi-monoenergetic peak and low divergence in the experiments with the current ultra-high intensity laser and thin target technologies. Here we propose a scheme that a Laguerre Gaussian laser irradiates a near-critical-density (NCD) plasma to generate a quasi-monoenergetic and low-divergence proton beam. The Laguerre Gaussian laser pulse in NCD plasma excites a moving longitudinal electrostatic field with a large amplitude, and it maintains the inward bowl-shape for dozens of laser durations. This special distribution of the longitudinal electrostatic field can accelerate and converge the protons simultaneously. Our particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation shows that the efficient proton acceleration can be realized with the Laguerre Gaussian laser intensity ranging from 3.9-10^21 Wcm^-2 -1.6-10^22 Wcm^-2 available in the near future, e.g., a quasi-monoenergetic proton beam with peak energy ~115 MeV and divergence angles less than 50 can be generated by a 5.3-10^21 Wcm^-2 pulse. Dense positrons are shown to be effectively generated from laser-solid interactions in the strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED) regime. Whether these positrons are polarized has not yet been reported, limiting their potential applications. Here, by QED particle-in-cell simulations including electron-positron spin and photon polarization effects, we investigate a typical laser-solid setup that an ultraintense linearly polarized laser irradiates a foil target with $\mu$m-scale-length preplasma. We find that once the positron yield becomes appreciable with the laser intensity exceeding $10^{24}~\rm W/\rm cm^2$, the positrons are obviously polarized. The polarized positrons can acquire $>30\%$ polarization degree and $>30$ nC charge with a flux of $10^{12}\,{\rm sr}^{-1}$. The polarization relies on the deflected angles and can reach 60\% at some angles and energies. The angularly-dependent polarization is attributed to the asymmetrical laser fields positrons undergo in the skin layer of overdense plasma, where the radiative spin-flip and radiation reaction play significant roles. Dense high-energy monoenergetic proton beams are vital for wide applications, thus modern laser-plasma-based ion acceleration methods are aiming to obtain high-energy proton beams with energy spread as low as possible. In this work, we put forward a quantum radiative compression method to post-compress a highly accelerated proton beam and convert it to a dense quasi-monoenergetic one. We find that when the relativistic plasma produced by radiation pressure acceleration collides head-on with an ultraintense laser beam, large-amplitude plasma oscillations are excited due to quantum radiation-reaction and the ponderomotive force, which induce compression of the phase space of protons located in its acceleration phase with negative gradient. Our three-dimensional spin-resolved QED particle-in-cell simulations show that hollow-structure proton beams with a peak energy $\sim$ GeV, relative energy spread of few percents and number $N_p\sim10^{10}$ (or $N_p\sim 10^9$ with a $1\%$ energy spread) can be produced in near future laser facilities, which may fulfill the requirements of important applications, such as, for radiography of ultra-thick dense materials, or as injectors of hadron colliders.

For simulating laser-plasma interactions, we developed a parallel, multi-dimensional, fully relativistically particle-in-cell (PIC) code, named YUNIC. The core algorithm is introduced, including field solver, particle pusher, field interpolation, and current interpolation. In addition to the classical electromagnetic interaction in plasmas, nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production are also implemented based on Monte-Carlo methods to study quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes. We benchmark YUNIC against theories and other PIC codes through several typical cases. YUNIC can be applied in varieties of physical scenes, from relativistic laser-plasma interactions to astrophysical plasmas and strong-field QED physics., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

A novel scheme is proposed for generating a polarized positron beam via multiphoton Breit-Wheeler process during the collision of a 10 GeV, pC seeding electron beam with the other 1 GeV, nC driving electron beam. The driving beam provides the strong self-generated field, and a suitable transverse deviation distance between two beams enables the field experienced by the seeding beam to be unipolar, which is crucial for realizing the positron polarization. We employ the particle simulation with a Monte-Carlo method to calculate the spin- and polarization-resolved photon emission and electron-positron pair production in the local constant field approximation. Our simulation results show that a highly polarized positron beam with polarization above $40\%$ can be generated in several femtoseconds, which is robust with respect to parameters of two electron beams. Based on an analysis of the influence of $\gamma$-photon polarization on the polarized pair production, we find that a polarized seeding beam of the proper initial polarization can further improve the positron polarization to $60\%$., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The spin effect of electrons/positrons ($e^-$/$e^+$) and polarization effect of $\gamma$ photons are investigated in the interaction of two counter-propagating linearly polarized 10-PW-class laser pulses with a thin foil target. The processes of nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production based on spin- and polarization-resolved probabilities are implemented into the particle-in-cell (PIC) algorithm by Monte Carlo methods. It is found from PIC simulations that the average degree of linear polarization of emitted $\gamma$ photons can exceed $50\%$. This polarization effect leads to reduced positron yield by about $10\%$. At some medium positron energies, the reduction can reach $20\%$. Furthermore, we also observe that the local spin polarization of $e^-$/$e^+$ leads to a slight decrease of the positron yield about $2\%$ and some anomalous phenomena about the positron spectrum and photon polarization at the high-energy range, due to spin-dependent photon emissions. Our results indicate that spin and polarization effects should be considered in calculating the pair production and laser-plasma interaction with the laser power of 10-PW class., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

It is shown by multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that intense secondary whistler waves with special vortex-like field topology can be excited by a relativistic laser pulse in the highly magnetized, near-critical density plasma. Such whistler waves with lower frequencies obliquely propagate on both sides of the laser propagation axis. The energy conversion rate from laser to whistler waves can exceed 15%. Their dispersion relations and field polarization properties can be well explained by the linear cold-plasma model. Generation of highly-polarized high-energy brilliant $\gamma$-rays via laser-plasma interaction has been investigated in the quantum radiation-reaction regime. We employ a quantum-electrodynamics particle-in-cell code to describe spin-resolved electron dynamics semiclassically and photon emission and polarization quantum mechanically in the local constant field approximation. As an ultrastrong linearly-polarized (LP) laser pulse irradiates on a near-critical-density (NCD) plasma followed by an ultrathin planar aluminum target, the electrons in NCD plasma are first accelerated by the driving laser to ultrarelativistic energies, and then head-on collide with reflected laser pulse by the aluminum target, emitting brilliant LP $\gamma$-rays due to nonlinear Compton scattering with an average polarization of about 70\% and energy up to hundreds of MeV. By comparison, as a conical gold target filled with NCD plasma is employed, the linear polarization degree, collimation and brilliance of emitted $\gamma$-ray beam are all significantly improved due to the enhanced strong laser-driven quasi-static magnetic field in plasmas. Such $\gamma$-rays can be produced with currently achievable laser facilities and find various applications in high-energy physics and astrophysics.

The production of a highly-polarized positron beam via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler processes during the interaction of an ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulse with a longitudinally spin-polarized ultrarelativistic electron beam is investigated theoretically. A new Monte Carlo method employing fully spin-resolved quantum probabilities is developed under the local constant field approximation to include three-dimensional polarizations effects in strong laser fields. The produced positrons are longitudinally polarized through polarization transferred from the polarized electrons by the medium of high-energy photons. The polarization transfer efficiency can approach 100\% for the energetic positrons moving at smaller deflection angles. This method simplifies the post-selection procedure to generate high-quality positrons in further applications. In a feasible scenario, a highly polarized ($40\%-65\%$), intense ($10^5$/bunch$-10^6 $/bunch), collimated ($5$mrad$-70$ mrad) positron beam can be obtained in a femtosecond timescale. The longitudinally polarized positron sources are desirable for applications in high-energy physics and material science .

The upcoming $10-100$ petawatt laser facilities may deliver laser pulses with unprecedented intensity of $10^{22}-10^{25}\rm~W cm^{-2}$, which can trigger various nonlinear quantum electrodynamic processes in plasma. For effective laser plasma interactions at such high intensity levels, guided laser propagation is critical. However, this becomes impossible via usual plasma electron response to laser fields due to electron cavitation by the laser ponderomotive force. Here, we find that ion response to the laser fields may effectively guide laser propagation at such high intensity levels. The corresponding conditions of the required ion density distribution and laser power are presented and verified by three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Spin-polarization effects of an ultrarelativistic electron beam head-on colliding with an ultraintense two-color laser pulse are investigated comprehensively in the quantum radiation-dominated regime. We employ a Monte Carlo method, derived from the recent work of [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 122}, 154801 (2019)], to calculate the spin-resolved electron dynamics and photon emissions in the local constant field approximation. We find that electron radiation probabilities in adjacent half cycles of a two-color laser field are substantially asymmetric due to the asymmetric field strengths, and consequently, after interaction the electron beam can obtain a total polarization of about 11\% and a partial polarization of up to about 63\% because of radiative spin effects, with currently achievable laser facilities, which may be utilized in high-energy physics and nuclear physics. Moreover, the considered effects are shown to be crucially determined by the relative phase of the two-color laser field and robust with respect to other laser and electron beam parameters., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures
