2. EFMVFL: An Efficient and Flexible Multi-party Vertical Federated Learning without a Third Party

Abstract

Federated learning allows multiple participants to conduct joint modeling without disclosing their local data. Vertical federated learning (VFL) handles the situation where participants share the same ID space and different feature spaces. In most VFL frameworks, to protect the security and privacy of the participants' local data, a third party is needed to generate homomorphic encryption key pairs and perform decryption operations. In this way, the third party is granted the right to decrypt information related to model parameters. However, it isn't easy to find such a credible entity in the real world. Existing methods for solving this problem are either communication-intensive or unsuitable for multi-party scenarios. By combining secret sharing and homomorphic encryption, we propose a novel VFL framework without a third party called EFMVFL, which supports flexible expansion to multiple participants with low communication overhead and is applicable to generalized linear models. We give instantiations of our framework under logistic regression and Poisson regression. Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to consider the minimization problem of the following nonlocal interaction functional \begin{equation*} E[\rho]=\frac{1}{2}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}K(x-y)\rho(x)\rho(y)dxdy+\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}F(x)\rho(x)dx. \end{equation*} The kernel $K(x)=\frac{1}{q}|x|^q-\frac{1}{p}|x|^p$ is an endogenous potential, where $q>p>-N$. The exogenous potential $F$ is a nonnegative continuous function and satisfies $F(x)\to +\infty$ as $|x|\to +\infty$. The existence of minimizers are established based on the concentration compactness principle. Especially, for $F(x)=\beta|x|^2(\beta >0)$ and $K(x)=\frac{1}{2}|x|^2-\frac{1}{2-N}|x|^{2-N}$($N>2$), the global minimizer is given explicitly by the method of calculus of variation.

In this paper, we study nonlinear Choquard equations \begin{equation}\label{eq 1a1-} (-\Delta+id)^{\frac{1}{2}}u=(I_\alpha*{|u|^p})|u|^{p-2}u\ \ {\rm in} \ \ \mathbb{R}^N, \ \ \ u\in H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{equation} where $(-\Delta+id)^\frac{1}{2}$ is a nonlocal operator, $p>0$, $N\geq2$ and $I_\alpha$ is the Riesz potential with order $\alpha\in(0,N)$. We show that there is a ground state solution to the above problem if $\frac{N+\alpha}{N}

Abstract

Zinc‐air batteries (ZABs) have attracted considerable attention for their high energy density, safety, low noise, and eco‐friendliness. However, the capacity of mechanically rechargeable ZABs was limited by the cumbersome procedure for replacing the zinc anode, while electrically rechargeable ZABs suffer from issues including low depth of discharge, zinc dendrite and dead zinc formation, and sluggish oxygen evolution reaction, etc. To address these issues, we report a hybrid redox‐mediated zinc‐air fuel cell (HRM‐ZAFC) utilizing 7,8‐dihydroxyphenazine‐2‐sulfonic acid (DHPS) as the anolyte redox mediator, which shifts the zinc oxidation reaction from the electrode surface to a separate fuel tank. This approach decouples fuel feeding and electricity generation, providing greater operation flexibility and scalability for large‐scale power generation applications. The DHPS‐mediated ZAFC exhibited a superior peak power density of 0.51 W/cm2 and a continuous discharge capacity of 48.82 Ah with ZnO as the discharge product in the tank, highlighting its potential for power generation. Abstract

Federated learning (FL) is a machine learning setting which allows multiple participants collaboratively to train a model under the orchestration of a server without disclosing their local data. Vertical federated learning (VFL) is a special structure in FL. It handles the situation where participants have the same ID space but different feature spaces. In order to guarantee the security and privacy of the local data of each participant, homomorphic encryption (HE) is often used to transmit intermediate parameters or data during the training process. In most VFL frameworks, a trusted third-party server is necessary because the plaintexts of the parameters need to be revealed for the computation. However, it is hard to find such a credible entity in the real world. Existing methods for solving this problem are either communication-intensive or unsuitable for multi-party scenarios. By combining secret sharing (SS) and HE, we propose a novel VFL framework without any trusted third parties called EFMVFL. It allows intermediate parameters to be transmitted among multiple parties without revealing the plaintexts. EFMVFL is applicable to generalized linear models (GLMs) and supports flexible expansion to multiple participants. Extensive experiments under Logistic Regression and Poisson Regression show that our framework is outstanding in communication (reduced by 3.2×– 6.8×) and efficiency (accelerated by 1.6×– 3.1×).
