Abstract This study was performed to analyze fingertip capillary blood sampling in pediatric patients using microcapillary blood collection tubes and microhematocrit tubes and to compare the blood cell analysis results obtained via these two blood collection methods. Finger capillary blood was collected from 110 outpatients using microcapillary blood collection tubes and microhematocrit tubes and complete blood count analysis was performed with a Sysmex XS-900i hematology analyzer and manual microscopy for blood cell morphology. Paired data was evaluated for agreement and bias using the microhematocrit samples as the reference group and the samples from the microcapillary blood collection tubes as the observation group. The two blood collection methods demonstrated good agreement for measuring red blood cell (RBC) parameters (i.e., RBC, Hb, Hct, MCV, MCH and MCHC), wherein the relative bias was > allowable total error (TEa) in 0.91%, 1.82%, 11.82%, 1.82%, 0.91% and 8.18% of the parameter measures, respectively. According to industry requirements, the proportion of samples meeting the acceptable bias level should be > 80%. Additionally, the estimated biases at each medical decision level were within clinically acceptable levels for RBC, Hb, Hct, and MCV. However, the proportion of WBC and PLT counts with relative bias > TEa was 25.45% and 35.45%, respectively. Furthermore, the relative bias of the WBC count at the medical decision level of 0.5 × 109/L and that of the PLT counts at the medical decision levels of 10 × 109/L and 50 × 109/L were clinically significant. Bland–Altman analysis further showed a mean bias of 0.66 × 109/L (95% LoA, − 0.79 to 2.11) for the WBC count and 39 × 109/L (95% LoA, − 46 to 124) for the PLT count from the blood samples collected in the microcapillary blood collection tubes compared with the counts of those collected in the microhematocrit tubes. Nocardiosis is an infectious disease caused by Nocardia spp., mainly affecting immunocompromised hosts. Nocardia infection is not common; especially Nocardia wallacei infection is even rarer. The patient, female, 61 years old, farmer, has been working in the field for a long time and has normal immune function. Her main clinical manifestation was persistent back pain. Chest-enhanced computed tomography showed pulmonary inflammation. Rare pathogen Nocardia wallacei was detected in alveolar lavage fluid using matrix-assisted laser destructive ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. She received treatment with linezolid and was discharged after her condition improved.

The formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) on fused silica upon irradiation with plane wave, double pulse, spot processing, and scanning processing (pulse duration tp = 35 fs, center wavelength λ = 800 nm, low repetition rate ≈1 kHz) is studied theoretically with an improved three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain plasma model. The model covers both intrapulse feedback under single shot and interpulse feedback under multi-shots, thus enabling better prediction of transient responses during laser–material interaction and the evolution of the ablated morphology and accumulated defects' density with more shots. In simulations of a single plane wave, a double pulse can modulate LIPSS periodicity. In simulations of spot processing with Gaussian beam, an increase in the number of shots results in a noticeable ablation pattern where high-spatial-frequency LIPSS surrounds low-spatial-frequency LIPSS at a fluence of 2.8 J/cm2. Moreover, simulations of scanning processing with Gaussian beam showcase the broad applicability of this model, revealing that the orientation of the LIPSS depends on the polarization direction rather than the scanning path. This new model provides a powerful tool to simulate the formation of LIPSS on silica, particularly when temporally modulated laser is involved or predicting the evolution of morphology dependent on the number of shots. Ultra‐thin 2D materials have great potential as electrodes for micro‐supercapacitors (MSCs) because of their facile ion transport channels. Here, a high‐precision controllable photonic‐synthesis strategy that provided 1 inch wafer‐scale ultra‐thin film arrays of alloyed WxMo2xSy with sulfur vacancies and expanded interlayer (13.2 Å, twice of 2H MoS2) is reported. This strategy regulates the nucleation and growth of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) on the picosecond or even femtosecond scale, which induces Mo–W alloying, interlayer expansion, and sulfur loss. Therefore, the diffusion barrier of WxMo2xSy is reduced, with charge transfer and ion diffusion enhancing. The as‐prepared symmetric MSCs with the size of 100 × 100 µm2 achieve ultrahigh specific capacitance (242.57 mF cm−2 and 242567.83 F cm−3), and energy density (21.56 Wh cm−3 with power density of 485.13 W cm3). The established synthesis strategy fits numerous materials, which provides a universal method for the flexible synthesis of electrodes in microenergy devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Femtosecond lasers have garnered widespread attention owing to their subdiffraction processing capabilities. However, their intricate natures, involving intrapulse feedbacks between transient material excitation and laser propagation, often present significant challenges for near-field ablation predictions and simulations. To address these challenges, the current study introduces an improved finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD)–plasma model (plasma)–two-temperature model (TTM) framework for simulating the ablation processes of various nanospheres on diverse substrates, particularly in scenarios wherein dynamic and heterogeneous excitations significantly influence optical-field distributions. Initially, FDTD simulations of a single Au nanosphere on a Si substrate reveal that, with transitions in the excitation states of the substrate, the field-intensity distribution transforms from a profile with a single central peak to a bimodal structure, consistent with experimental reports. Subsequently, simulations of a polystyrene nanosphere array on a SiO2 substrate reveal that different excitation states of the nanospheres yield two distinct modes, namely near-field enhancement and masking. These modes cannot be adequately modeled in the FDTD simulations. Our combined model also considers the intrapulse feedback between the electromagnetic-field distribution resulting from near-field effects and material excitations. Furthermore, the model can quantitatively analyze subsequent electron–phonon coupling and material removal processes resulting from thermal-phase transitions. Consequently, our model facilitates predictions of the femtosecond-laser ablation of single nanospheres or nanosphere arrays with varying sizes and materials placed on substrates subjected to near-field effects. The ultrashort pulsed (USP) laser microwelding of sapphire/lnvar36 alloy controlled by the surface roughness of metal was investigated for the first time. The surface roughness (Sa) of Invar alloys gradually decreased from 0.944 to 0.029 μm from the prime surface to grounded and polished surface. However, the joint shear strength first increased and then decreased with the lowered Sa, the maximum shear strength reached 107.87 MPa at the Sa ∼ 0.131 μm. Compared to other surfaces with low Sa, the relatively high surface roughness enhanced the interfacial thermal deposition both spatially and temporally which in turn promoted the diffusion of interface elements and the formation of jagged mechanical interlocking structures. Therefore, the appropriate rough metal surface was beneficial for the enhancement of sapphire/metal dissimilar joints. This report is of great significance in simplifying the surface preparation process in the USP laser microwelding of transparent hard and brittle materials with metals, therefore promoting this technique from lab to industry. BackgroundMutations in the isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme are present in a majority of lower-grade gliomas and secondary glioblastomas. This mis-sense mutation results in the neomorphic reduction of isocitrate dehydrogenase resulting in an accumulation of the "oncometabolite" 2-hydroxyglutarate (2HG). Detection of 2HG can thus serve as a surrogate biomarker for these mutations, with significant translational implications including improved prognostication. Two dimensional localized correlated spectroscopy (2D L-COSY) at 7T is a highly-sensitive non-invasive technique for assessing brain metabolism. This study aims to assess tumor metabolism using 2D L-COSY at 7T for the detection of 2HG in IDH-mutant gliomas.MethodsNine treatment-naïve patients with suspected intracranial neoplasms were scanned at 7T MRI/MRS scanner using the 2D L-COSY technique. 2D-spectral processing and analyses were performed using a MATLAB-based reconstruction algorithm. Cross and diagonal peak volumes were quantified in the 2D L-COSY spectra and normalized with respect to the creatine peak at 3.0 ppm and quantified data were compared with previously-published data from six normal subjects. Detection of 2HG was validated using findings from immunohistochemical (IHC) staining in patients who subsequently underwent surgical resection.Results2HG was detected in both of the IDH-mutated gliomas (grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma and grade II Diffuse Astrocytoma) and was absent in IDH wild-type gliomas and in a patient with breast cancer metastases. 2D L-COSY was also able to resolve complex and overlapping resonances including phosphocholine (PC) from glycerophosphocholine (GPC), lactate (Lac) from lipids and glutamate (Glu) from glutamine (Gln).ConclusionsThis study demonstrates the ability of 2D L-COSY to unambiguously detect 2HG in addition to other neuro metabolites. These findings may aid in establishing 2HG as a biomarker of malignant progression as well as for disease monitoring in IDH-mutated gliomas.
