Soil piping erosion is an underground soil erosion process that is significantly underestimated or overlooked. It can lead to intense soil erosion and trigger surface processes such as landslides, collapses, and channel erosion. Conducting susceptibility mapping is a vital way to identify the potential for soil piping erosion, which is of enormous significance for soil and water conservation as well as geological disaster prevention. This study utilized airborne radar drones to survey and map 1194 sinkholes in Sunjiacha basin, Huining County, on the Loess Plateau in Northwest China. We identified seventeen key hydrogeomorphological factors that influence sinkhole susceptibility and used six machine learning models—support vector machine (SVM), logistic regression (LR), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), random forest (RF), and gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT)—for the susceptibility assessment and mapping of loess sinkholes. We then evaluated and validated the prediction results of various models using the area under curve (AUC) of the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC). The results showed that all six of these machine learning algorithms had an AUC of more than 0.85. The GBDT model had the best predictive accuracy (AUC = 0.94) and model migration performance (AUC = 0.93), and it could find sinkholes with high and very high susceptibility levels in loess areas. The glacier surface is composed not only of ice or snow but also of a heterogeneous mixture of various materials. The presence of light-absorbing impurities darkens the glacier surface, reducing local reflectance and thereby accelerating the glacier melting process. However, our understanding of the spatial distribution of these impurities remains limited, and there is a lack of studies on quantifying the dirty degree of glacier surfaces. During the Sentinel satellite overpass on 21 August 2023, we used an ASD FieldSpec3 spectrometer to measure the reflectance spectra of glacier surfaces with varying degrees of dirtiness on the Qiyi glacier, Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Using Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA), the Sentinel imagery was decomposed to generate fraction images of five primary ice surface materials as follows: coarse-grained snow, slightly dirty ice, moderately dirty ice, extremely dirty ice, and debris. Using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery with a 0.05 m resolution, the primary ice surface was delineated and utilized as reference data to validate the fraction images. The findings revealed a strong correlation between the fraction images and the reference data (R2 ≥ 0.66, RMSE ≤ 0.21). Based on pixel-based classification from the UAV imagery, approximately 80% of the glacier surface is covered by slightly dirty ice (19.2%), moderately dirty ice (33.3%), extremely dirty ice (26.3%), and debris (1.2%), which significantly contributes to its darkening. The glaciers in southeastern Tibet Plateau (SETP) influenced by oceanic climate are sensitive to global warming, and there remains a notable deficiency in accurate multitemporal change analyses of these glaciers. We conduct glacier inventories in the Yigong Zangbo River Basin (YZRB) in SETP for the years 1988, 2015, and 2023 utilizing Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery, and analyze the glacier spatiotemporal variation incorporating the existing glacier inventory data. Since the 1970s until 2023, the glaciers significantly retreated at a rate of 0.76 ± 0.11%·a−1, with the area decreasing from 2583.09 ± 88.80 km2 to 1635.89 ± 71.74 km2, and the ice volume reducing from 221.7017 ± 7.9618 km3 to 152.7429 ± 6.1747 km3. The most significant retreat occurred in glaciers smaller than 1 km2. Additionally, glaciers on southern aspects retreated slower than the northern counterparts. The glaciers in the western YZRB witnessed a significantly greater shrinkage rate than those in the eastern section, with the most pronounced changes occurring in Aso Longbu River Basin. Furthermore, severe glacier mass deficits were observed from 2000 to 2019, averaging a loss rate of 0.57 ± 0.06 m w.e. a−1. The continuous rise in air temperature has primarily induced a general widespread glacier change in the YZRB. However, diverse topography led to spatial variability in glacier changes with discrepancies as large as several times. The features of individual glaciers, such as glacier size, debris cover, and the development of ice-contact glacial lakes enhanced the local complexity of glacier change and elusive response behaviors to climate warming led by the different topographic conditions. The life strategies of bacterial communities determine their structure and function and are an important driver of biogeochemical cycling. However, the variations in these strategies under different soil resource conditions remain largely unknown. We explored the bacterial life strategies and changes in structure and functions between Antarctic soils and forest (temperate, subtropical, and tropical) soils. The results showed that the weighted mean rRNA operon copy number in temperate soils was 19.5% lower than that in Antarctic soils, whereas no significant differences were observed among Antarctic, subtropical, and tropical soils. An unexpected result was that bacterial communities in Antarctic soils tended to be copiotrophs, such as Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota, whereas those in temperate soils tended to be oligotrophs, such as Acidobacteriota and Chloroflexi. Functional predictions showed that in comparison to copiotrophs in Antarctic soils, temperate-inhabiting oligotrophic bacteria exhibited an 84.2–91.1% lower abundance of labile C decomposition genes (hemicellulose, cellulose, monosaccharides, and disaccharides), whereas a 74.4% higher abundance of stable C decomposition (lignin). Genes involved in N cycling (nitrogen fixation, assimilatory nitrate reduction, and denitrification) were 24.3–64.4% lower in temperate soils than in Antarctic soils.
