2. Strain and Strain rate-dependent Mechanical Metamaterials

Abstract

Generally, after the manufacturing process, the mechanical behaviors of a meta-structure or material are set and are hardly modified. Nevertheless, materials and structures with varying static or dynamical mechanical properties are attractive to many engineering fields. In this talk, I will introduce two types of mechanical metamaterials with tunable mechanical performances under large compressive deformations, one is strain-dependent mechanical metamaterial and another one is strain rate-dependent mechanical metamaterial. The tunable mechanical performances mean the tunable effective Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio (auxeticity), both of which are fundamental mechanical properties of materials. For the strain-dependent mechanical metamaterial, the corresponding theoretical model of their effective Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were established, and the mechanism of their mechanical tunability has been explained. More importantly, simulation results demonstrate that the strain-dependent metamaterial has the potential for designing metamaterials exhibiting tunable phononic band gaps. For the strain rate-dependent mechanical metamaterial, we design a solid structure that displays unidirectional shock resistance, thus going beyond Newton’s second law in analogy to non-Newtonian fluids. We design the mechanical metamaterial with finite element analysis and fabricate it using three-dimensional printing at the centimetric scale (with fused deposition modeling) and at the micrometric scale (with two-photon lithography). The non-Newtonian elastic response is measured via dynamical velocity-dependent experiments. Reversing the direction of the impact, we further highlight the intrinsic non-reciprocal response.

16. Rubik’s cube as in-situprogrammable matter and a reconfigurable mechanical metamaterial

Abstract

As part of the 4th industrial revolution, programmable mechanical metamaterials exhibit great application potential in flexible robotics, vibration control, and impact protection. However, maintaining a programmed state without sustaining the external stimulus is often challenging and leads to additional energy consumption. Inspired by Rubik’s cube, we design and study an in-situprogrammable and distribution-reconfigurable mechanical metamaterial (IPDR-MM). A matrix model is developed to model IPDR-MMs and describe their morphological transitions. Based on this model, the reinforcement learning method is employed to find the pathways for morphological transitions. We find that IPDR-MMs have controllable stiffness across several orders of magnitude and a wide range of adjustable anisotropies through morphology transformation. Additionally, because of the independence of the directions of morphology transformation and bearing, IPDR-MMs exhibit good stability in bearing and can readily achieve high stiffness. The Rubik’s cube-inspired design concept is also instructive for other deformable structures and metamaterials, and the current version of the proposal should be sufficiently illustrative to attract and broaden interdisciplinary interests.

18. Point Cloud Denoising in Outdoor Real-World Scenes Based on Measurable Segmentation.

Abstract

With the continuous advancements in three-dimensional scanning technology, point clouds are fundamental data in various fields such as autonomous driving, 3D urban modeling, and the preservation of cultural heritage. However, inherent inaccuracies in instruments and external environmental interference often introduce noise and outliers into point cloud data, posing numerous challenges for advanced processing tasks such as registration, segmentation, classification, and 3D reconstruction. To effectively address these issues, this study proposes a hierarchical denoising strategy based on finite measurable segmentation in spherical space, taking into account the performance differences in horizontal and vertical resolutions of LiDAR systems. The effectiveness of this method was validated through a denoising experiment conducted on point cloud data collected from real outdoor environments. The experimental result indicates that this denoising strategy not only effectively eliminates noise but also more accurately preserves the original detail features of the point clouds, demonstrating significant advantages over conventional denoising techniques. 44. Effect of Carbon and Titanium Variations in Fe‐Based Heat‐Resistant Superalloy A286 on TiC and η Phase Formation.

Abstract

Fe‐based heat‐resistant A286 superalloy is an age‐hardened austenitic stainless steel. Age‐hardening is greatly affected by TiC particles and η‐Ni3Ti phases. Herein, the evolution of TiC and η (hcp‐Ni3Ti) precipitations is investigated in six different A286 alloys with simultaneous variations of C and Ti contents, such as 0.00C–2.38Ti, 0.02C–2.46Ti, 0.04C–2.54Ti, 0.05C–2.58Ti, 0.06C–2.62Ti, and 0.08C–2.69Ti wt%. During microstructure evolution from solutioning state (900 °C for 2 h) to aging state (720 °Cfor 16 h), nodular/needle‐like TiC (fcc) and platelet lamellar structures of eta (η (hcp‐Ni3Ti)) phases are observed in the austenitic matrix of superalloys. Statistical analysis of TiC and eta phases after microstructural examination indicates that mean size goes up to 3.3 and 6.8 μm2 in 0.08C–2.69Ti wt% alloy, respectively. Yield strength and ultimate tensile strength are increased from 350 to 510 MPa and 530 to 650 MPa as a result of the strengthening mechanism of TiC from 0.00C–2.38Ti to 0.08C–2.69Ti wt% alloys, respectively. However, precipitation of these phases leads to brittleness of the alloys and elongation decreases from 20% to 12% with the increment of these phases.
