The design of continuum structures often presents challenges related to stress concentration, which can cause significant structural damage. To address this issue, the current study presents a new stress minimization method that utilizes the Windowed Evolutionary Structural Optimization (WESO) framework. The method aims to improve algorithm stability by optimizing design variables with an intermediate density. The use of a P‐norm stress aggregation method improves the assessment of global stress levels and enhances computational efficiency. Furthermore, a stable element sensitivity formulation, derived from the adjoint sensitivity analysis of the global stress measure, effectively handles the nonlinear stress behavior. Mesh filtering techniques are utilized to convert sensitivity from elements to nodes, and the structural topological solution is represented using the level set function (LSF) based on element‐node sensitivity. This method addresses the singularity issue commonly found in density‐based optimization methods and facilitates the achievement of smooth topological solutions. Through 2D and 3D benchmark designs, the proposed method's feasibility, stability, and superiority are thoroughly demonstrated. A parametric study is conducted to identify the optimal parameter range for the algorithm, leading to the development of a rational method for parameter selection. The optimized topology, with its smooth boundaries, can guide the design of structures without the need for redesign or post‐processing, helping to drive innovation and development in engineering. To solve the instability of the compression bars in the space truss composed of GFRP tubes, a composite column with high-strength concrete (HSC) confined by glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) tube was proposed. High-strength self-compacting micro-expansive concrete with a slump greater than 255 mm was produced under normal-temperature curing conditions and confined by GFRP tubes. A mechanical performance test of the GFRP-confined HSC short column under axial compression was performed. The effects of GFRP tube types, concrete expansion agent, constraint effect, ultimate load capacity, and failure mode of the composite structure were discussed and analyzed through the test. A model of the stress-strain response of the GFRP confined HSC column was proposed. The results show that the 45° fiber-wound GFRP tube has a significant restraining effect on the HSC. The stress-strain relationship increases quadratically in a linear fashion. When the composite column was damaged, the GFRP fiber was broken and the concrete was crushed. The ultimate strength was about 1.5 times that of unconstrained HSC columns, and the loading method has less influence on the results. The expansion agent has a significant effect on the deformation performance of the composite column, and its ultimate strain was about 1.4 times that of the composite column without expansion agent. To study the design method of openings on the web of an I-beam, three I-beams with different circular holes were designed using the traditional truss mechanism, and the circular holes were reinforced by ring stirrups. A shear test was performed to study the failure modes of the I-beams and efficiency of the ring stirrups. A new method for establishing the truss mechanism was proposed, which used the windowed evolutionary structural optimization method to calculate the topology optimization solution of the I-beam. From the topology optimization results, the strut-and-tie model (STM) was established, which revealed the stress mechanism of the I-beam. Via the STM, the optimal shape and location for the opening of the I-beam under shear load states were presented. The quantity of reinforcing bars, porosity and ultimate load of the I-beam designed by the STM were, respectively, 0.67, 5.5 and 1.2 times those of the experimental model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Chinese tallow tree (Triadica sebifera) is an economically important plant on account of its ornamental value and oil-producing seeds. Leaf colour is a key characteristic of T. sebifera, with yellow-, red- and purple-leaved varieties providing visually impressive displays during autumn. In this study, we performed metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying leaf colour development in purple-leaved T. sebifera at three stages during the autumnal colour transition, namely, green, hemi-purple, and purple leaves. We accordingly detected 370 flavonoid metabolites and 10 anthocyanins, among the latter of which, cyanidin-3-xyloside and peonidin-3-O-glucoside were identified as the predominant compounds in hemi-purple and purple leaves. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that structural genes associated with the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway, chlorophyll synthesis pathway and carotenoid synthesis pathway were significantly differential expressed at the three assessed colour stages. Additionally, transcription factors associated with the MYB-bHLH-WD40 complex, including 22 R2R3-MYBs, 79 bHLHs and 44 WD40 genes, were identified as candidate regulators of the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway. Moreover, on the basis of the identified differentially accumulated anthocyanins and key genes, we generated genetic and metabolic regulatory networks for anthocyanin biosynthesis in T. sebifera. These findings provide comprehensive information on the leaf transcriptome and three pigments of T. sebifera, thereby shedding new light on the mechanisms underlying the autumnal colouring of the leaves of this tree., (© 2024 Scandinavian Plant Physiology Society.)
