Abstract

Geological sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) is an effective method to reduce greenhouse gases and an important technology for carbon neutralization. Among all geological sequestration sites, coal reservoirs are potentially effective and practicable. The Xiangzhong Depression of Hunan Province of China is selected as the research area, and the coal seam of Longtan Formation is the target reservoir in this paper. CO2‐enhanced coalbed methane (CO2‐ECBM) and CO2 sequestration capacity are both simulated according to the laboratory experiments on reservoir parameters. During simulation, four production wells and one injection well were designed, and the simulation process can be divided into two stages: CO2‐ECBM and CO2 geological storage. The CO2‐ECBM stage refers to CO2 injection for increasing methane production, and the CO2 geological storage stage aims to predict the CO2 sequestration capacity. After that, sensitivity analyses of sequestration effect are carried out. During the simulation, when maintaining a constant pressure injection of CO2 under the original conditions of 0.01 mD permeability, 9% porosity, and 1.47 MPa reservoir methane pressure, the total storage amount is only 0.14 × 106 m3. However, the storage amount increases significantly to 6.62 × 106 m3 if the permeability increases to 1.5 mD. 27. Identification of CO2Leakage in an Active CO2-EOR Field, Songliao Basin, China

Abstract

CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) not only helps to recover additional oil but also sequesters CO2in the subsurface. However, any leakage of the injected CO2may place the environment and ecosystems at risk. In this work, we measured the near-surface atmospheric CO2concentrations (pCO2) and ground CO2fluxes in and around the S16 block of the Yushulin oil field, Songliao Basin, China, to identify CO2leakage induced by CO2-EOR activities. The measurements were performed at Type I, II, III, and IV sites, targeting the background area, the oil block, large faults, and the peripheries of injection wells, respectively. The mapped distributions of pCO2and ground CO2fluxes exhibit spatially heterogeneous. The peaks on the CO2flux map are spikier in contrast to those on the pCO2map, which indicates that the CO2flux measurements are more powerful to locate leakage sites. Type IV sites have anomalously high CO2fluxes, suggestive of significant leakage in the peripheries of the injection wells, likely due to well integrity failure and high injection pressure. The CO2escaped from wellbore flaws could migrate laterally after reaching shallow aquifers, then to soils, and finally to the atmosphere. Hence, elevated CO2fluxes are observed in some Type II sites away from the wells. The baseline of the CO2fluxes is 14.8 g m–2d–1, determined by a combination of a box plot and a probability plot. The calculated leakage rate of the entire block is 35.2 t d–1. Wellbore-peripheric leakage, despite the high CO2fluxes, is only 0.2 t d–1due to the limited area. This work provides a practical method for the identification and quantification of CO2leakage in geological storage projects and highlights the importance of well integrity in CO2sequestration.

28. Geological Conditions of Shale Gas Accumulation in Coal Measures.

Abstract

The shale of different potential layers is studied by using rock pyrolysis analysis, total organic carbon determination (TOC), kerogen microscopic component identification, mineral X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption experiments. The results are as follows: (1) Shishui Formation of the Lower Carboniferous and Longtan Formation of the Upper Permian are the two most important shale gas reservoirs in the Chenlei Depression. The sedimentary environment of the target shale is a marine land interaction facies coastal bay lagoon swamp sedimentary system. Two sedimentary facies of tidal flat facies, subtidal zone, and lagoon swamp facies are developed. (2) The organic matter types of shale are Type III and II2, with TOC content greater than 1%. The maturity of shale samples is relatively higher (Ro,max is above 2%), which means they have entered the stage of large-scale gas generation. The overall brittle mineral content of the target shale sample is relatively higher (above 40%), which is conducive to artificial fracturing and fracture formation in the later stage, while an appropriate amount of clay minerals (generally stable at 40%) is conducive to gas adsorption. (3) The overall pore structure of the water measurement group and Longtan group is good, with a higher specific surface area and total pore volume (average specific surface area is 12.21 and 8.36 m2/g, respectively), which is conducive to the occurrence of shale gas and has good adsorption and storage potential. The gas content of the water measurement group and the Longtan Formation varies from 0.42 to 5 cm3/g, with an average of 2.1 cm3/g.
