24. Analysis of Volatile Components in Chrysanthemum nankingense Leaves Dried by Different Methods by Headspace Solid Phase Microextraction-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and Calculation of Odor Activity Value

Abstract

To determine the effects of drying methods on the volatile compounds and explore the key aroma compounds in Chrysanthemum nankingense leaves, head-space solid phase micro-extraction combined with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) was employed for quantitative and qualitative analysis of the volatile compounds in C. nankingense leaves dried by hot air drying, vacuum-freeze drying or microwave-hot air drying. The result showed that a total of 140 compounds belonging to six classes (terpenes, esters, aldehydes, alcohols, aromatic compounds and other substances) were identified in all samples. Of these, 112, 86, 83 and 85 were detected in fresh and dried C. nankingense obtained by hot air drying, microwave-hot air drying, and vacuum-freeze drying, respectively. Among these compounds, terpenes were the most abundant, with contents of 229 474.33, 64 629.68, 56 469.88 and 70 832.87 μg/kg in fresh, hot air dried, microwave-hot air dried, and vacuum-freeze dried samples, respectively. Compared with the other drying methods, vacuum-freeze drying gave better retention of the abundance of volatile compounds. Vacuum-freeze dried C. nankingense had similar flavor to fresh samples, showing camphor-like, turpentine-like, flowery and grassy aromas. GC-MS combined with odor activity values (OAVs) confirmed that β-ocimene, caryophyllene and trans-β-farnesene were the major aroma components. GC-MS combined with E-nose can represent an efficient nondestructive method for the detection of volatile compounds in C. nankingense leaves and allow the discrimination of dried C. nankingense obtained by different drying methods. These results provide a theoretical basis for choosing drying methods and understanding the difference in volatiles components in dried C. nankingense obtained by different drying methods.

Abstract

Insufficient sleep compromises cognitive performance, diminishes vigilance, and disrupts daily functioning in hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Despite extensive research revealing significant variability in vigilance vulnerability to sleep deprivation, the underlying mechanisms of these individual differences remain elusive. Locus coeruleus (LC) plays a crucial role in the regulation of sleep–wake cycles and has emerged as a potential marker for vigilance vulnerability to sleep deprivation. In this study, we investigate whether LC microstructural integrity, assessed by fractional anisotropy (FA) through diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) at baseline before sleep deprivation, can predict impaired psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) performance during sleep deprivation in a cohort of 60 healthy individuals subjected to a rigorously controlled in‐laboratory sleep study. The findings indicate that individuals with high LC FA experience less vigilance impairment from sleep deprivation compared with those with low LC FA. LC FA accounts for 10.8% of the variance in sleep‐deprived PVT lapses. Importantly, the relationship between LC FA and impaired PVT performance during sleep deprivation is anatomically specific, suggesting that LC microstructural integrity may serve as a biomarker for vigilance vulnerability to sleep loss. 49. Enantiomeric Discrimination by Anisotropic Polarization of Two-Dimensional ReSe2 with Chiral Au Nanoparticles.

Abstract

Enantiomeric discrimination plays a crucial role in the fields of analytical science and chemical biology. Herein, we achieve chiral recognition via angle-resolved polarized Raman scattering using a composite material consisting of an anisotropic two-dimensional material, ReSe2, and chiral Au nanoparticles (CAuNPs). A near-field effect is induced through the attachment of CAuNPs to ReSe2, in conjunction with modulation of polarized light, resulting in simultaneous angular polarization of ReSe2. This angular polarization was utilized for the chiral detection of tyrosine. Varying enantiomeric excess (ee) leads to inverse nonreciprocal angular deflections, which we propose arise from interactions between the chiral near-field and optical vectors modified by chiral molecules with distinct ee values. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to the optical spin Hall effect within the field, generating distinct vector deflections that can be utilized to discriminate between different enantiomers. Ultimately, we demonstrate selective identification of chiral substances by establishing a correlation between the optical inversion angle and ee value. Abstract

Exploiting the valley degree of freedom to store and manipulate information provides a novel paradigm for future electronics. A monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) with broken inversion symmetry possesses two degenerate yet inequivalent valleys, offering unique opportunities for valley control through helicity of light. Lifting the valley degeneracy by Zeeman splitting has been demonstrated recently, which may enable valley control by a magnetic field. However, the realized valley splitting is modest, (~ 0.2 meV/T). Here we show greatly enhanced valley spitting in monolayer WSe2, utilizing the interfacial magnetic exchange field (MEF) from a ferromagnetic EuS substrate. A valley splitting of 2.5 meV is demonstrated at 1 T by magneto-reflectance measurements. Moreover, the splitting follows the magnetization of EuS, a hallmark of the MEF. Utilizing MEF of a magnetic insulator can induce magnetic order, and valley and spin polarization in TMDCs, which may enable valleytronic and quantum computing applications.
