Abstract

Freehand 3D ultrasound (US) has important clinical value due to its low cost and unrestricted field of view. Recently deep learning algorithms have removed its dependence on bulky and expensive external positioning devices. However, improving reconstruction accuracy is still hampered by difficult elevational displacement estimation and large cumulative drift. In this context, we propose a novel deep motion network (MoNet) that integrates images and a lightweight sensor known as the inertial measurement unit (IMU) from a velocity perspective to alleviate the obstacles mentioned above. Our contribution is two-fold. First, we introduce IMU acceleration for the first time to estimate elevational displacements outside the plane. We propose a temporal and multi-branch structure to mine the valuable information of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) acceleration. Second, we propose a multi-modal online self-supervised strategy that leverages IMU information as weak labels for adaptive optimization to reduce drift errors and further ameliorate the impacts of acceleration noise. 17. Gas Eruption Phenomenon Happening from Ga-In Alloy in Electrolyte

Abstract

We report a gas eruption phenomenon caused by electrolysis of liquid Ga-In alloy in an electrolyte, especially NaOH solution. A volcanic eruption-like blowout of gas occurred from the orifice on the alloy surface. In addition to gas plume, large gas bubbles were also generated and the total gas yield increased as In ratio was increased. It is found that destructiveness of the passivation layer on the Ga-In alloy is critical to gas generation. The mechanism of gas eruption can be ascribed to a galvanic interaction happens owing to passivation film and alloy with different activity connected as electrode in electrolyte. Further investigation demonstrated that the lattice of the film expands because of the incorporation of indium, which brings about the decrease in band gap and finally enhances more gas generation. Abstract

Bacterial infections, especially caused by multidrug‐resistant bacteria, pose a big challenge to the healthcare system. As a group of historic agents, metals with broad‐spectrum antibacterial activity are regarded as promising alternatives to tackle antibiotic resistance. Among them, gallium ions have presented encouraging antibacterial effects in research and preclinic studies. However, utilization of gallium ions has difficulty in achieving high targeting and long‐term effectiveness. With the renaissance of liquid metal, here, a novel and facile antibacterial gallium nanostructure is proposed in which polydopamine‐modified gallium nanocore serves as an ion reservoir for enhanced metal ion release and the surface also permits secondary reaction, allowing for in situ formation of Ag nanoparticles to improve the antibacterial property, ROS generation, and photothermal performance. Notably, ≈100% bacterial killing efficacy can be achieved when combined with NIR laser irradiation. The in vivo treatment results of methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)‐infected mice demonstrate that the microneedle patch loaded with nanoparticles exhibits outstanding bacterial elimination and inflammation alleviation, and promotes angiogenesis and collagen deposition, further accelerating wound healing. This gallium‐based nanostructure offers an effective nanoplatform for antibacterial treatments and combinatory strategies, which holds significant promise for refractory multidrug‐resistant bacteria and related infections. Abstract

The misuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic‐resistant "superbugs," prompting the exploration of alternative antibacterial strategies. This study focuses on the promising avenue of photothermal therapy (PTT). Despite numerous advantages, the clinical applicability of PTT as a sole sterilization strategy is hindered by the necessity for higher temperatures, potentially causing harm to healthy tissues. To overcome this challenge, this study introduces antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) to modify the surface of gallium‐based liquid metal (LM) nano‐antimicrobial agents, thereby enhancing their photothermal antibacterial effects within a lower temperature range. First, a novel LM composite nanomaterial, LM@AMP nanoparticles, is synthesized through a sonication process involving 1,2‐distearoyl‐sn‐glycero‐3‐phosphoethanolamine‐N‐[carboxy(polyethylene glycol)], AMP, and LM in an aqueous solution. Herein, AMPs not only contribute to the structural stability of LM nanoparticles but also enhance their selective interaction with bacterial cell membranes. Then, a thorough characterization of LM@AMP nanoparticles is performed, encompassing analyses through electron microscopy, determination of particle size, and assessment of zeta potential. Moreover, the exceptional photothermal properties exhibited by these nanoparticles are validated. Finally, this investigation demonstrates that LM@AMP nanoparticles selectively target bacterial cell membranes, showcasing efficient bactericidal effects (near 100%) at relatively low temperatures under near‐infrared irradiation. 30. Magnetic and injectable Fe-doped liquid metals for controlled movement and photothermal/electromagnetic therapy.

Abstract

As a multifunctional material, gallium-based liquid metal (LM) mixtures with metal particles dispersed in the LM environment display many excellent and intriguing properties. In this study, biomaterials were prepared by mixing Fe particles with LM for easily manageable photothermal or electromagnetic therapy and evaluated. Clinically, the fabricated 5%Fe/LM sample was injectable and radiopaque, which allowed its smooth delivery through a syringe to the target tissues, where it could help achieve clear imaging under CT. Meanwhile, because of the loading of Fe particles, the 5%Fe/LM possessed a magnetic property, implying a high manipulation capability. According to the experiments, the capsule containing 5%Fe/LM when placed in an isolated pig large intestine could move as desired to the designated position through an external magnet. Further, the biosafety and low toxicity of the 5%Fe/LM were confirmed by cytotoxicity tests in vitro, and the temperature changes at the interface between the 5%Fe/LM and intestinal tissue after near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation were determined through theoretical modeling and numerical simulation data analysis. Due to the excellent photothermal and magnetothermal effects of LM, the temperature of the 5%Fe/LM injected into the rabbit abdominal cavity could significantly increase under NIR laser or alternating magnetic field (AMF) administration. As a novel functional biomaterial, the 5%Fe/LM exhibited promising potential for designated position movement and photothermal or magnetothermal therapy in the near future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
