20. Analysis on the absorption of hydrogen chloride with the absorbent of Na2CO3 for dechlorinating pyrolysis of municipal solid waste.

Abstract

The amount of HCl in hot volatile from pyrolysis of municipal solid waste can be decreased with absorbent. Herein, the absorption of HCl with Na2CO3 was investigated by thermodynamic method and fixed-bed experiments. The results showed that CO2 and H2O were inhibitive to the absorption of HCl. The role of CO2 was stronger than that of H2O in lower temperatures (<730°C), while the effect of H2O became more distinct in higher temperatures. The performance of Na2CO3 was excellent in lower temperatures, while it performed worse and the performance could not be remarkably improved by increasing the dosage of Na2CO3 over 553°C. The results from experiments verified that the inhibiting effect of CO2 was stronger than that of H2O at 550°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

24. Design and optimization of isotropic stretchable strain sensors for multidirectional monitoring.

Abstract

Multidirectional monitoring is highly expectable for stretchable strain sensors by which the randomly orientated cracks or the maximum strain of all directions need to be accommodated. Many current types of research exploit laminated sensors and rosette designs to obtain the desired behavior in several discrete directions. However, this can lead to complex fabricating and resolving processes, as well as significant measurement errors. Our work proposes an isotropic stretchable strain (ISS) sensor that utilizes the in-plane curved sensing film from graphene/silver nanowires (AgNWs), which exhibits uniform sensitivity in all directions within 30∘ and the potential extending to 360∘. The ISS sensor, whose curved shape is optimized based on splines and the quantitative sensing model, is fabricated by a flash stamp machine and followed by vacuum filtration. Experimental results show that the ISS sensor possesses equivalent sensing properties in 30∘ with excellent linearity and durability. Thus our customized sensor is applied to multidirectionally monitor the stretchable surface without consideration for the sensor orientation and the resolving process. Most importantly, the ISS sensor and its design method provide an efficient route for future sensor design with expected properties, not limited to isotropy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Researches on the degradation mechanisms of Laser diode (LD) widely used in the fields of laser communication, medicine and military affairs remain to be complex and difficult. Distincting from formal degradation analysis methods of complicated mathematical calculations and verifying experiments, an alternative efficient method is required. In this work, a new circuit model integrating the thermal and degraded effects is obtained, which efficiently reflects the characteristics of LD at actual work and overcomes the insufficiency of classic single component simulation model. The two main degradation modes, the active region defects growth and cavity surface oxidation, are quantitatively described in this new circuit model through improving the expression of non-radiative recombination current In and absorptive rate of cavity surface A;. The model is implemented in the circuit simulator PSpice and verified in the LD characteristic test experiment platform, then the key parameters are identified by the method of nonlinear least square fitting of experiment data. Simulation and experiment results show that, the model can effectively illustrate the degradation characteristics of LD and the parameters, threshold Ith and slope k of I-P curves, can be used to identify the active region and the cavity surface degradation.

29. Animal Models for Treating Spinal Cord Injury Using Biomaterials-Based Tissue Engineering Strategies

Abstract

The aim of the study is to provide an up-to-date review of studies that used preclinical animal models for the evaluation of tissue engineering treatments for spinal cord injury (SCI), which involved the use of biomaterials with or without the addition of cells or biomolecules. Electronic search of the PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases was performed for relevant studies published between January 2009 and December 2019. In total, 1579 articles were retrieved, of which 58 studies were included for analysis. Among the included studies, rats were the most common species used for animal models of SCI, while complete transection was the most commonly used injury pattern. Immediate intervention after injury was conducted in the majority of studies, and 8 weeks was the most common final time point of outcome assessment. A wide range of natural and synthetic biomaterials with different morphologies were used as a part of tissue engineering treatments for SCI, including scaffolds, hydrogels, and particles. Experimental parameters in studies using SCI animal models to evaluate tissue engineering treatments should be carefully considered to match the purpose of the study. Biomaterials that have functional modifications or are applied in combination with cells and biomolecules can be effective in creating a permissive environment for SCI repair in preclinical animal models.
