22. Comparative Analysis of the Characteristics of Rainy Season Raindrop Size Distributions in Two Typical Regions of the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract

Motuo and Naqu are two typical regions of the Tibetan Plateau with different geographical locations and climate regimes. These differences may lead to discrepancies in the raindrop size distributions (DSDs) and precipitation microphysical processes between the two regions. This paper investigates discrepancies in the DSDs using disdrometer data obtained during the rainy season in Motuo and Naqu. The DSD characteristics are studied under five different rainfall rate categories and two precipitation types (stratiform and convective). For the total data sets, the number concentrations of drops with diameters D > 0.6 (D < 0.6) mm are higher (lower) in Naqu than in Motuo. The fitted normalized gamma distributions of the averaged DSDs for the five rainfall rate categories show that Naqu has a larger (lower) mass-weighted mean diameter Dm (normalized intercept parameter, log10Nw) than does Motuo. The difference in Dm between Naqu and Motuo increases with the rainfall rate. Convective clusters in Naqu could be identified as continental-like, while convective precipitation in Motuo could be classified as maritime-like. The relationships between the shape factor μ and slope parameter Λ of the gamma distribution model, the radar reflectivity Z and the rainfall rate R are also derived. Furthermore, the possible causative mechanism for the notable DSD variation between the two regions during the rainy season is illustrated using reanalysis data and automated weather station observations. Cold rain processes are mainly responsible for the low concentrations of large drops observed in Naqu, whereas warm rain prevails in Motuo, producing abundant small drops.

24. Diurnal Variation Characteristics of Clouds and Precipitation during the Summer Season in Two Typical Climate Regions of the Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract

Mêdog and Nagqu are two typical climate regions of the Tibetan Plateau, with different atmospheric conditions and local orography. This may lead to different diurnal variation patterns of clouds and precipitation. This paper investigates the diurnal variations of clouds and precipitation in Mêdog and Nagqu, using ground-based measurements from Ka-band cloud radar and a Particle Size and Velocity (PARSIVEL) disdrometer. High frequencies of cloud cover and precipitation occur from 23:00 local solar time (LST) to 05:00 LST in Mêdog, while low frequencies appear from 11:00 LST to 17:00 LST. The occurrence frequencies in Nagqu maintain high values from 13:00 LST to 21:00 LST. In terms of mean rain rate, heavier rainfall appears in the evening and at night in Mêdog, with peaks at 00:00 LST and 18:00 LST, respectively. In Nagqu, the heaviest rainfall occurs at 12:00 LST. In addition, the afternoon convective rainfall in Nagqu is characterized by a much higher concentration of large drops, which can be classified as continental-like. The morning rainfall has the lowest concentration of large drops and can be classified as maritime-like. Finally, the mechanisms of diurnal variations in the two regions are discussed. The diurnal cycle of clouds and precipitation in Mêdog may be associated with the nocturnal convergence of moisture flux and mountain–valley wind circulation. Diurnal variations in Nagqu have a high correlation with the diurnal cycle of solar radiation. Abstract

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is one of the most fascinating topics in condensed matter physics related to spin–orbit coupling (SOC). In this paper, we report on the AHE of high-quality epitaxial Au/Fe4N bilayer films, which were grown by a plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy system. A scaling involving multiple competing scattering mechanisms and a shunting model were adopted to analyze the AHE in detail. Compared with Fe4N single layers and Cu/Fe4N bilayers, the AHE of Au/Fe4N bilayers is dramatically modified by strong SOC of the Au layer. Analysis has shown that aside from extra scatterings from Au atoms that diffused from an Au layer to a Fe4N layer, both spin Hall effect of Au and magnetic proximity effect near the Au/Fe4N interface contribute to the modification of the AHE. Variation of coercivity with the change of current, which could be attributed to spin–orbit torque, implies that the measured AHE is a combination of the AHE of Fe4N and strong SOC of Au. Abstract

Mn4-xGdxN films with x ranging from 0 to 0.48 have been grown by a plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE) system. Analyses show that there is a competition between Kondo coupling and the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction in these films. The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) was investigated, and a multiple competing scattering mechanism was used to differentiate different contributions to the AHE. Fitting results using a multivariable scaling relation show that contribution of the skew-scattering mechanism to the AHE is suppressed and competition between different contributions is stronger in highly doped samples than that in undoped samples. Resistivity-temperature (ρ-T) curves in Gd-rich samples exhibit a typical behavior of heavy fermion (HF) materials. It shows a weak metal conducting behavior in a high temperature range, while Kondo coupling dominates the middle temperature range of 50 K–110 K. With a further decrease in the temperature to 5 K, a Fermi-liquid behavior is found in the range of 5 K–20 K. Comprehensive analyses indicate that Mn4-xGdxN with large x might be a new kind of HF material with room temperature ferromagnetism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
