Functional coatings, including organic and inorganic coatings, play a vital role in various industries by providing a protective layer and introducing unique functionalities. However, its design often involves time‐consuming experimentation with multiple materials and processing parameters. To overcome these limitations, data‐driven approaches are gaining traction in materials science. In this paper, recent advances in data‐driven materials research and development (R&D) for functional coatings, highlighting the importance, data sources, working processes, and applications of this paradigm are summarized. It is begun by discussing the challenges of traditional methods, then introduce typical data‐driven processes. It is demonstrated how data‐driven approaches enable the identification of correlations between input parameters and coating performance, thus allowing for efficient prediction and design. Furthermore, carefully selected case studies are presented across diverse industries that exemplify the effectiveness of data‐driven methods in accelerating the discovery of new functional coatings with tailored properties. Finally, the emerging research directions, involving integrating advanced techniques and data from different sources, are addressed. Particle agglomeration poses the principal challenge in the solidification of particulate-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMNCs). Here, we present an approach aimed at achieving a uniform dispersing of nanoparticles (NPs) in an aluminum matrix via ultrasonic-assisted fast cooling schemes. Microstructure analysis reveals that the distribution of NPs in the matrix transforms from intergranular distribution to intragranular distribution at the microscale and the interface between NP and the matrix changes from incoherent to coherent at the nanoscale under the action of ultrasonic melt treatment. Theoretical analysis underscores the significance of NP size and cooling rate as the two prominent factors influencing NP distribution during the solidification of nanocomposites. Through the ultrasonic dispersion of NPs and particle engulfment during the fast cooling process, the ductility of highly dispersed nanocomposites exhibits significant enhancement, with an increase of 82.7 and 18.4 pct compared to that of pure aluminum and non-ultrasonic-treated samples, respectively. Energy-efficient solid-state-lighting (SSL) technologies are rapidly developing, but the lack of stable, high-performance rare-earth free phosphors may impede the growth of the SSL market. One possible alternative is organic phosphor materials, but these can suffer from lower quantum yields and thermal instability compared to rare-earth phosphors. However, if luminescent organic chromophores can be built into a rigid metal-organic framework, their quantum yields and thermal stability can be greatly improved. This Forum Article discusses the design of a group of such chromophore-based luminescent metal-organic frameworks with exceptionally high performance and rational control of the important parameters that influence their emission properties, including electronic structures of chromophore, coligands, metal ions, and guest molecules.

Aiming at the thermal corrosion issue of Cr-containing MCrAlY (M = Fe, Co, Ni) materials used in marine gas turbine hot-end components in a humid marine environment with highly corrosive chloride salts, Mo is anticipated to replace Cr, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, excessive Mo facilitates oxidation and creates volatile metal oxides, ultimately jeopardizing the integrity of the oxide film. The alloy composition in the FCC_Ll2+BCC_B2+Ni5Y ternary phase region was designed according to the calculated phase diagrams of the Ni-Mo/Cr-Al-Y system. The influence and mechanism of replacing Cr with minor Mo on phase composition and high-temperature oxidation resistance were investigated. The high-temperature oxidation mass-gain experiments at 750 t indicate that a small amount of Mo (atomic fraction of 0. 5%) promotes the formation of BCC_B2 phase and facilitates the transformation of surface oxide films on the alloy from θ-Al2O3 to stable αα-Al2O3, which is conducive to the formation of dense α-Al2O3 oxide layer during long-term service, thus improving the oxidation resistance performance of the alloy. However, the addition of atomic fraction of 2. 5% Mo causes the transformation of ordered BCC_B2 phase to Mo-rich BCC_A2 phase, which is not conducive to the improvement of oxidation resistance performance. Thus, the present work indicate that the combination of theoretical calculations and experimental verification may provide a effective guidance for the composition design of novel materials with customized structures and properties. A novel Co‐based metal‐organic framework, namely [Co3(BTA)2(5‐tbuip)2]n (LMOF‐1) (BTA=1H‐Benzotriazole, 5‐tbuip=5‐tert‐Butylisophthalic Acid), was successfully synthesized by solvothermal method using rigid benzotriazole as the main ligand and chromophore. The choice of ligands avoids the creation of interpenetrating structures in the structure and is demonstrated by single crystal X‐ray diffraction data. LMOF‐1 crystallizes in the tetragonal system, P4/n space group. LMOF‐1 is linked by BTA to form a one‐dimensional(1D) chain of metal clusters, which is then linked by 5‐tbuip to form a three‐dimensional(3D) network structure. The detection ability of LMOF‐1 for metal ions in water was evaluated. It is worth noting that LMOF‐1 has high selectivity and sensitivity for Fe3+ and Cr2O72−, and it has a lower detection limit of 2.18×106M, 1.86× 106M, respectively. The results show that LMOF‐1 is a promising chemical sensor for the detection of Fe3+ and Cr2O72− in aqueous solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
