Abstract

This article addresses an underexplored intersection between subtitling and translanguaging with reference to the representation of diverse Chinese fangyan in hip-hop music videos. Drawing on recent progress in the intersection between translanguaging and Translation Studies, the article sketches the multilingualism of the Han ethnic majority and its precarious existence under the governmental policy and language planning of China. Second, it contextualises the rising audibility and visibility of local speeches and non-standard writing in cinematic, metrolingual, and digital cultures. This highlights the social and technological conditions that enable culture creators and language users to practice novel representations of linguistic diversity and variations in the subtitling medium. Furthermore, the case-study analyses illustrate how Chinese hip-hop musicians assemble linguistic, multimodal, and multisemiotic resources to effect translanguaging performance across different communicational repertoires. The conclusion outlines the practical and theoretical implications of translanguaging subtitles for alternative media representations of linguacultural diversities in China and beyond. Abstract

This collection of essays represents the first of its kind in exploring the conjunction of translation and social media communication, with a focus on how these practices intersect and transform each other against the backdrop of the cascading COVID-19 crisis. The contributions in the book offer empirical case studies as well as personal reflections on the topic, illuminating a broad range of themes such as knowledge translation, crisis communications, language policies, cyberpolitics and digital platformization. Together they demonstrate the vital role of translation in the trust-based construction of global public health discourses, while accounting for the new medialities that are reshaping the conception, experience and critique of translation in response to the cultural, political and ecological challenges in the post-pandemic world. Written by leading scholars in translation studies, media studies and literary studies, this volume sets to open up new conversations among these fields in relation to the global pandemic and its aftermath.

Abstract

This chapter explores the nexus of crisis translation and the affordances of social media. Using Ireland as an illustrative case, the authors apply the analytic lens of network analysis and the two-step flow model of communication to critically explore the role of social media in translating information during the pandemic. Recognizing that culturally and linguistically diverse communities are sometimes insular in a national context, we examine how micro-influencers serving as ‘bridges’ within these communities can use social media as a connector between official communication channels (government, health authorities, etc.) and community members that are often disconnected from these formal channels. Risks around misinformation, mistranslation and misidentification of influencers are discussed. The necessity and challenge of multidirectionality in crisis communication and the role of translation to facilitate this are highlighted. Finally, we present translation through social media platforms as a trust-strengthening mechanism that enables future crisis preparedness.

36. Countering political enchantments in digital China: With reference to the fan-remix Meeting Sheldon.

Abstract

Despite growing scholarly interest in fan audiovisual translation, how fan translators exploit fictional content for online protests of real-world issues has not been thoroughly explored in the literature. This article examines the fan-driven metamorphosis of the US sitcom The Big Bang Theory in the Chinese online space, focusing on the fan-remix "Meeting Sheldon", produced by the China-based fandubbing group Y Show Club amidst online protests against the original show's official ban in China. Y Show Club paired audiovisual clips from the original series with newly dubbed tracks and subtitles in Mandarin and English. In doing so, they combined new content and the original sitcom characters at the intersection between fiction and reality to reimagine the present and future within the state apparatus of political enchantments. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of LDH in breast cancer by meta-analysis.Methods: Electronic searches for relevant articles were conducted in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases. The HR and their 95% CI were used to assess the prognostic value of serum LDH. Stata Statistical Software 12.0 was applied for statistical analysis.Results: A total of 11 studies involving 6,102 patients were subjected to final analysis. Our results showed that higher serum LDH had significant effect on poor overall survival (HR, 1.88; 95% CI, 1.68–2.11) and progression-free survival (HR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.46–2.68). Moreover, the results of subgroup analyses were consistent with that of overall outcomes. No significant heterogeneity and publication bias were found in this study.Conclusion: Serum LDH could act as a prognostic factor for patients with breast cancer. Abstract

This study investigates some of the previously unrecognized reading, writing and sharing trends emerging across Asian-born popular digital webtoon and webnovel platforms. These particular sectors of the creative industries are rapidly becoming energizing vehicles for transmedia intellectual property (IP)-referring to a network of interconnected media, popular culture and merchandise emanating from a single creative source. Specifically, South Korean webtoons and Chinese webnovels are cultivating new audiences and participatory cultures beyond their Asian borders, and thus playing a significant economic role in the percentage of global GDP that the broader cultural and creative industries generate annually. To shed light on how this phenomenon is shifting various modes of production, this study analyses how a range of active fans, otherwise known as 'cultural intermediaries', have moved to the forefront of creative industry transformations while building trust among their followers and demonstrating loyalties with the platforms on which they circulate their user-created content. Taken together, the webtoons and webnovels explored highlight some of the complex impacts and tensions on the production, circulation, and translation of popular digital media in an increasingly participatory and decentralised online and mobile environments. In so doing, it introduces important global perspectives to an area of study often firmly anchored to Western cultural products and practices, thereby contributing to current discussions on the continuing transformation of creative work in Asia's digital economy.
