Abstract

We demonstrate a selectively emitting optical Fabry-P\'erot resonator based on a few-nm-thin continuous metallic titanium nitride film, separated by a dielectric spacer from an optically thick titanium nitride back-reflector, which exhibits excellent stability at 1070 K against chemical degradation, thin-film instabilities and melting point depression. The structure paves the way to the design and fabrication of refractory thermal emitters using the well-established processes known from the field of multilayer and rugate optical filters. We demonstrate that a few-nanometer thick films of titanium nitride can be stable under operation at temperatures exceeding 1070 K. This type of selective emitter provides a means towards near-infrared thermal emission that could potentially be tailored to the accuracy level known from rugate optical filters., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

35. Fabrication of thick Cr masks for reactive ion substrate etching by electron beam lithography and lift-off techniques.

Abstract

Fabrication of tall Cr nanostructures of different shapes by lithography and lift-off processes is demonstrated. By varying resist thickness, metal layer thickness, and diameter of holes in the resist mask, it is demonstrated that metal structures with shapes ranging from sharp-tipped conical over flat-top cones to nearly cylindrical can be fabricated. A comparison of resist layer dissolution in acetone, covered by Ag and Cr films, reveals that Cr films grow with an open structure of particles that allow rapid solvent diffusion through Cr layers that are several hundred nanometers thick. On the other hand, the 2D growth of Ag on the resist forms a barrier against acetone diffusion. The open structure of Cr enables the lift-off process to fabricate several-μm-high nanostructures using a single resist layer. As an example, high-aspect-ratio Si structures are demonstrated by reactive ion etching using thick Cr layers as a mask, fabricating nanopillars with 3 μm height at room temperature. Abstract

The brittleness of oxide glasses remains a critical problem, limiting their suitability for high‐performance and safety‐critical applications. In this study, we attempt to address this by synthesizing nanostructures in sodium borosilicate glasses through phase separation. While most previous work on the mechanical properties of phase‐separated glasses has focused on phase separation through nucleation and growth, we here create interconnected structures through spinodal decomposition. Interestingly, this leads to improvements in Vickers hardness (from 5.8 to 6.2 GPa), crack initiation resistance (from 4.9 to 8.1 N), and fracture toughness (from 0.85 to 1.09 MPa⋅m1/2). We show that the interconnected glassy phases deflect the propagating cracks, causing the required energy for cracks to cross phase boundaries to increase when subjected to external stress. This study deepens the understanding of how to address the brittleness problem of oxide glasses and provides a promising way to design high‐performance glass materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The effects of solute random distribution (RSS) before relaxation and solute short-range ordering (SRO) after relaxation on the mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline Cu–Ag alloys were analyzed by molecular dynamics simulation. It has been found that the mechanical properties of Cu–Ag alloy mechanics with SRO were better than those of Cu–Ag alloy mechanics with RSS. Specifically, during the whole tensile process, compared with sample #1 with SRO structure, sample #2 with RSS structure has stronger strain–stress response ability, more obvious phase transformation process, and narrower shear strain zone on the grain boundary. Furthermore, when the number of Voronoi seeds is examined concerning the mechanical properties of the nanocrystalline Cu–Ag alloy, it becomes apparent that the average flow stress drops as the quantity of Voronoi seeds increases. 46. Effect of rare earth element on H13 microscopic structure and mechanical properties

Abstract

In view of the phenomenon that irregular inclusions are easy to use as crack sources, rare earth H13 steel with different gradients is designed. The results showed that ellipsoidal rare earth inclusions (Ce2O3, CeAlO3and Ce2O2S) were formed from irregular Al2O3inclusions with the assistance of rare earths. The carbides that precipitated from liquid phases were arranged in a network along the grain boundary, forming composite carbides that are rich in Mo and V. Along the grain boundary, the morphology of the composite carbides got finer, and MC-type carbides enclosed the modified inclusions into nuclei, facilitating their precipitation. After annealing, the microstructure revealed that the carbides were dispersed in black segregated patches along the grain boundary and were discontinuous. The average diameter of carbides decreased from 109.7 to 79.2 nm in the same region according to a statistical comparison of the number of carbides before and after the addition of rare earth elements. The carbides were distributed alongside primary carbides as tiny particles of M7C3and M23C6secondary carbides. Especially when the rare earth content was 0.032 wt-%, the impact toughness increased to 34%. This work offers a reference value for the practical application of rare earth in hot work die steel in addition to revealing the strengthening mechanism of ultra-high strength RE-13 steel.

Abstract

Aluminum nitride (AlN) is a material of growing interest for power electronics, fabrication of sensors, micro-electromechanical systems, and piezoelectric generators. For the latter, the formation of nanowire arrays or nanostructured films is one of the emerging research directions. In the current work, nanostructured AlN films manufactured with normal and glancing angle magnetron sputter depositions have been investigated with scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and optical spectroscopy. Growth of the nanostructures was realized utilizing metal seed particles (Ag, Au, and Al), allowing the control of the nucleation and following growth of AlN. It was demonstrated how variations of seed particle material and size can be used to tune the parameters of nanostructures and morphology of the AlN films. Using normal angle deposition allowed the growth of bud-shaped structures, which consisted of pillars/lamellae with wurtzite-like crystalline structures. Deposition at a glancing angle of 85° led to a film of individual nanostructures located near each other and tilted at an angle of 33 degree; relative to the surface normal. Such films maintained a high degree of wurtzite-like crystallinity but had a more open structure and higher roughness than the nanostructured films grown at normal incidence deposition.
