The distinctive fragrance of Wuyi Rock Tea (WRT) has garnered high attention in recent years. Herein, we conducted a comprehensive comparison of the sensory attributes and odor-active compounds (OACs) between two quintessential WRTs, namely Rougui (RGT) and Shuixian (SXT). Sensory analysis revealed that RGT exhibited a more pronounced fruity aroma, while SXT had a more complex and intricate sensory profile. By using gas chromatography-olfactory mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS) and two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF-MS) analyses, 26 OACs were identified. Among them, 12 compounds with odor activity values > 1 were recognized as key OACs. Noteworthily, eight compounds, including 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazine, 2,3-diethyl-5-methylpyrazine, linalool, methyl salicylate, geraniol, (E) -β-ionone, and (E) -nerolidol, were shared by both teas. The unique compounds for RGT were (E) -linalool oxide and (Z) -jasmone, while those for SXT were β-cyclocitral and α-ionone. Size-controlled and ordered assemblies of artificial nanotubes are promising for practical applications; however, the supramolecular assembly of such systems remains challenging. A novel strategy is proposed that can be used to reinforce intermolecular noncovalent interactions to construct hierarchical supramolecular structures with fixed sizes and long-range ordering by introducing ionic terminals and fully rigid arms into benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) molecules. A series of similar BTA molecules with distinct terminal groups and arm lengths are synthesized; all form hexagonal bundles of helical rosette nanotubes spontaneously in water. Despite differences in molecular packing, the dimensions and bundling of the supramolecular nanotubes show almost identical concentration dependence for all molecules. The similarities of the hierarchical assemblies, which tolerate certain molecular irregularities, can extend to properties such as the void ratio of the nanotubular wall. This is a rational strategy that can be used to achieve supramolecular nanotubes in aqueous environments with precise size and ordering at the same time as allowing molecular modifications for functionality. Unlike thermotropic liquid-crystalline C3-symmetric molecules with flexible chains, the herein-designed fully rigid three-armed molecules ( C3-symmetric and unsymmetric) create a fancy architecture for the formation of lyotropic liquid crystals in water. First, hollow columns with triple-stranded helices, analogous to helical rosette nanotubes, are spontaneously constructed by self-organization of the rigid three-armed molecules. Then, the helical nanotubes arrange into hexagonal liquid-crystalline phases, which show macroscopic chirality as a result of supramolecular chiral symmetry breaking. Interestingly, the helical nanotubes constructed by the fully rigid molecules are robust and stable over a wide concentration range in water. They are hardly affected by ionic defects at the molecular periphery, that is, further decoration of functional groups on the molecular arms can presumably be realized without changing the helical conformation. In addition, the formed columnar phases can be aligned macroscopically by simple shear and show anisotropic ionic conductivity, which suggests promising applications for low-dimensional ion-conductive materials. • Sensory analysis showed roasting reduced the perceived bitterness of WRT. • Phenolics, purine alkaloids and bitter amino acids decreased after roasting. • Human bitter taste receptors, TAS2R39 and TAS2R14, were robustly activated by WRT. • Roasting reduced the activation of WRT upon TAS2R39 and TAS2R14. The influence of roasting on tea bitterness remains unclear. With Wuyi Rock tea (WRT) as an example, this study investigated the impact of roasting on WRT's bitterness, utilizing an integrated approach involving sensory evaluation, bitter compound profiling, and cell-based calcium imaging. Sensory analysis revealed that roasting effectively reduced the perceived bitterness of WRT. This reduction was supported by decreases in various bitter compounds, including 19 flavanols, 11 flavonols, 12 phenolic acids, 2 purine alkaloids, and 9 bitter amino acids, which diminished by 16%, 26%, 19%, 2%, and 70%, respectively. Furthermore, we established two heterogeneous bitter receptor expression systems: TAS2R39/Gα15-HEK293T and TAS2R14/Gα15-HEK293T cell lines. These systems quantitatively confirmed the reduction in bitterness, demonstrating 51% and 62% decreases in intracellular calcium mobilization within the transfected cells, respectively. Abstract: A series of rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers containing polycaprolactam (PA6) as the coil block and poly (p-benzamide) (PBA) as the rod block were synthesized by a two-step polycondensation reaction. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), UV–vis spectrophotometry (UVS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed to determine the fundamental molecular structure and thermal property of copolymers. UV–vis spectrophotometry results revealed that the content of PBA homopolymer increased with the block length (number of monomer) of PBA and reached a plateau value ranging from 22 to 40 monomers of PBA. The wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements indicated that the crystallization of PA6 blocks was strongly suppressed due to the stretching from rods after annealed at temperature above the melting point of PA6. Only a few imperfect crystals of PA6 existed in the samples with low volume fraction of PBA. Moreover, the variation of PA6 block length hardly affected the crystallinity of PBA, which was dominantly controlled by the block length of PBA as diffusion was the control step for PBA crystallization at the annealing temperature. Abstract: Deformation-induced phase transition behavior of polyamide 12 (PA12) in its segmented copolymers with polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) was studied with in-situ wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) at different temperatures. In these segmented copolymers, which contain a high content of PTHF, a transformation from the stable γ phase to a metastable α″ phase is observed during tensile deformation at room temperature, which shows a similar diffraction behavior to that of the α phase but without an obvious melting point. The deformation-induced α″ phase is not a thermodynamic stable phase but arises from kinetic origins, which is in line with the condition for its formation. After the release of tensile force following deformation, the metastable α″ phase can partially transform back to the initial γ phase. The reversible phase nature may contribute somewhat to the elasticity of PTHF–PA12 systems as a result of this enthalpic contribution. Upon increasing the content of PTHF in the copolymer, the critical stress required to induce the new α″ phase increases. Upon increasing strain, the α″ phase will disappear in the samples that possess a particularly high content of PA12. Higher temperatures also prevent the γ phase from transforming to the α″ phase. Deformation‐induced structural evolution of polyethylene (PE) gel films were investigated by in situ synchrotron radiation SAXS and WAXS techniques during stretching at temperatures from 25°C to 110°C. The structural evolutions along tensile strains showed distinct behaviors in the four temperature regions divided by TαI and TαII given by DMA and the onset point of melting measured by DSC, respectively, which was determined by the coupling effects of external stretching field and temperature. Finally, the morphological diagrams of PE gel films on distinct scales including long period of lamellae, crystallinity, and crystal size in 2D temperature‐strain space were established, which can give a direct sight of membrane morphologies and act as a map for processing parameters selection. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract The structural evolution of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) with distinct water absorption during uniaxial deformation slightly above glass transition temperature (T g) were investigated by in-situ synchrotron radiation wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Results show that the locally ordered structures are not conducive to stretch-induced crystallization (SIC) although the corresponding entropy is more close to crystals compared to random chains, which is due to the limited chain mobility therein. The "frozen orders" should be destroyed to achieve the critical chain mobility required by SIC even with the presence of water as plasticizer. Unexpectedly, absorption of water does not enhance but suppresses SIC though it does promote the chain mobility, originating from lower stress level with higher water contents. Stress and chain mobility directly correlate with chain stretch and orientation in positive and negative manners, respectively, demonstrating that chain stretch and orientation also play important role in SIC around T g. Abstract: A series of rod–coil–rod triblock copolymers were synthesized by two-step polycondensation with polycaprolactam (PA6) as the flexible block and poly(p-benzamide) (PBA) as the rod. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), UV–vis spectrophotometry and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) were first performed to determine the fundamental molecular structure and thermal property of each polymer. Through wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) measurements, frustrated structures of both components were studied. For PA6, a quasi-γ mesomorphic order was found in the transition-region nearby the PBA domain which is more favored with the increase of the PBA content owing to stretching from the PBA rod block and different cross-section areas of the rod and coil chains. On the other hand, the mesomorphic order of PA6 segments imposes stretching and constraint on the PBA blocks, which leads to a reduction of order of PBA block when the volume fraction of rod reaches approximately 45%. α crystals of PA6 can form only in the triblock copolymer with low volume fraction of PBA, which exhibit the Brill transition feature during the heating process though this transition ends prematurely as the melting of crystals. To deal with the drinking water safety caused by fluoride, a novel carboxylated polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous membrane (C-PAN NFM) is designed and fabricated massively for the first time by adopting synchronously biaxial stretching and carboxylation. The C-PAN NFM is composed of the layered stack structure by cross-linked nanofibers. Due to its high specific surface area, excellent hydrophilicity, a large amount of carboxyl and amine groups, C-PAN NFM owns high fluoride adsorption capacity and outstanding selectivity. Both the carboxylation and acid treatment of C-PAN NFM improved the fluoride adsorption capacity remarkably. Specifically, C-PAN NFM shows excellent reusability without secondary pollution. The fluoride adsorption behavior of C-PAN NFM is dominated by chemical adsorption, and the adsorption mechanism is mainly driven by hydrogen bonding and ion exchange. The mass-produced C-PAN NFM is a novel polyacrylonitrile-based porous membrane that shows a great application potential for fluoride removal with good efficiency and recyclability. Combining a homemade uniaxial stretching device and the simultaneous in-situ synchrotron radiation WAXS measurement, the structural evolution during transverse direction (TD) stretching of machine direction (MD) pre-stretched Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film has been investigated. Current work reveals that increasing the MD pre-stretch before the occurrence of stretch induced crystallization (SIC) can enhance the crystallization and orientation in TD stretching. The concept of parallel chains structures (PCS) cross-linked network is proposed to interpret the rubber-like mechanical behavior. An appropriate stretch ratio window in stretching above the glass transition temperature (T g) is existed, where the PCS cross-linked network before crystallization can be induced by stretching above T g. With the help of the PCS cross-linked network, the chain orientation is retained more effectively under stretching, promoting the formation of subsequent crystallization and crystal cross-linking network. The strain hardening in different pre-stretched samples occurs accompanied by the same crystallinity and various chains orientation. This demonstrates that the strain hardening is determined by the crystal cross-linked network rather than the orientation. In-situ small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) is employed to study the stretch-induced structural evolutions of four different pre-oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) cast films during uniaxial stretching at room temperature. The mechanical properties and structural evolutions show distinct features with the improvement in orientation of initial structure. For low-oriented films, the tensile stress induces the amorphization of lamellar crystals parallel to stretching direction, while the shear stress triggers the shearing of lamellar stacks at other angles through crystal slipping. For high-oriented films, the elastic deformation mode dominates as the normals of all lamellae are along stretching direction. Under tensile stress, micro-buckling or bending replaces the lamellar shearing to trigger the initial deformation instability of crystals. And stress-induced amorphization of lamellar crystals might also occur at large strains in the strain hardening zone. This study uncovers the different structural evolution roads of low- and high-oriented films, which will aid to deepen the understanding of the orientation effects on the deformation mechanisms of other semi-crystalline polymers. The evolution of poly (vinyl alcohol) PVA structure and dichromatic substance induced by uniaxial stretching PVA in the mixed solution with iodine and boric acid (BA) is systematically studied by the combination of in-situ synchrotron radiation small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXD). The experiment is carried out under an orthogonal experimental design for the iodine concentrations of 0.01, 0.2, 1 M, and the BA concentrations of 0.3, 1, and 3 wt%, respectively. We divide the stretch process into three regions, whose boundary is the yield point and strain harden point. The PVA-I 3 - co-crystal generating at high and moderate iodine concentrations is less stable as compared with the PVA crystal, which leads to the earlier decrease of crystallinity at the end of the first region. In the second region, the broken crystal, namely the regular amorphous, is the precursor of the PVA-polyiodide complex. Further increasing the strain, the PVA-I 3 - co-crystals are generated from the one dimension polyiodide surrounded by the PVA chains through a melt-reconstruction process. The adequate BA can make it easy to form the polyiodide at the initial state. Still, the increasing rate of polyiodide is suppressed by further added BA due to the limitation of chain movement by the crosslinking agent. In the final region, the emergence of nanofibril can account for the strain hardening of the film. The evolution of polyiodide and PVA-I 3 - co-crystal revealed by this work gives a better understanding of the polarizer production process, which may guide the resolution of blue leakage of polarizer via an enhancement of the I 3 − in the crystal form during stretching. The structural evolution of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) under uniaxial stretching has been studied with in-situ synchrotron radiation small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to reveal the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) mechanism. The scattering invariant analysis method was applied to semi-quantitatively analyze the evolution of crazing. For the sample without melt pre-stretching, which exhibits almost the same BDT behavior in different directions. The formed crazes are enabled to grow and propagate stably via shear deformation of the matrix. While for samples with melt pre-stretching, crazing is further promoted when stretching along the transverse direction. With a higher craze growth rate and lower craze fibril fraction, the destructive crazing cannot be fully stabilized by shear banding and premature craze fracture occurs. In contrast, shear banding dominates the deformation when stretching along the pre-stretching direction. Due to the low craze concentration and slow craze growth rate, crazes with higher fibril fraction gradually slip with matrix shearing. The premature craze damage is consequently avoided and an enhanced toughness is achieved. The structural evolution of these samples indicates that the kinetic competition between crazing and shear banding is the key to the macroscopic toughness of glass polymers. A novel amidoximated polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous membrane (AO-PAN NFM) is synthesized by post-amidoximation of PAN NFM prepared via simultaneously biaxial stretching for the first time. With layered stack structure consisting of cross-linked nanofibers, the AO-PAN NFM is characterized by high specific surface area and outstanding hydrophilicity. Accordingly, it exhibits high uranium adsorption capacity, excellent selectivity, outstanding reusability with fast and efficient desorption response. Meanwhile, the chemical adsorption dominates the uranium adsorption behavior of AO-PAN NFM. Recent efforts attempting to in-situ track the polymer film formation during film blowing are summarized. The specially designed film blowing apparatus is firstly introduced, where the air ring is aligned along with the die, and it's capable of installation in the synchrotron beamline (SR-beamline). Later on, detailed structural evolution of different polymeric systems during film blowing, including polyethylene (PE) and poly(butylene adipate-co- butylene terephthalate) (PBAT), are obtained with the assistance of simultaneous acquired Small- and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS/WAXS). The transient structure evolution information from oriented polymer melt to final crystalline tubular film clarifies the contribution of the crystallite-based network to final macroscopic performances. Also, the experimental results have shown the influence of intrinsic molecular characteristics and external processing parameters on the formation of stable tubular bubble. Additionally, the post-modification of the blown film, including stretching and surface treatment is also discussed. Current experimental efforts are expected to provide more detailed parameters for mathematical modeling of film blowing, which could help us modify or develop new numerical models. The copolymerization of ethylene and different α-olefins could result in polyethylene (PE) with different structural topologies, and lead to polyethylene products with different macroscopic performances. Herein, three different polyethylene samples, namely low-density polyethylene (l -PE), metallocene catalyzed ethylene-hexene copolymer (h -PE) and ethylene-octene copolymer (o -PE), were selected as representatives to construct the structure-process-property relationship during film blowing. The detailed crystal-based network evolution during film blowing was first characterized by in-situ synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering. The crystallization process of l -PE film is determined by the coupling effects of temperature and flow, while those of h -PE and o -PE films are dominated by the temperature. Furthermore, the hierarchical crystal structure from the molecular scale to micrometers of final films and segmental dynamics were systematically characterized by multiple ex-situ characterization techniques, i.e. Solid-State NMR, FTIR, SEM. l -PE film shows the crystalline morphology of the row-nucleated structure, whereas h -PE and o -PE show spherulite-like superstructure with better mechanical properties. Hard-elastic polyethylene (HEPE) cast films are the key intermediate product for producing PE microporous membranes (dry process) used as separators in Lithium battery. The effects of temperature on the deformation mechanisms of HEPE cast films are systematically studied with in-situ synchrotron radiation small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) techniques during stretching in a wide temperature range from 25 to 135 °C. The structural evolutions and mechanical behaviors show three distinct features, which contribute to the rough divisions of the temperature space into three regions (I/II/III) with α-I relaxation temperature (T αI) and the onset melting temperature (T onset) as the boundaries. On the basis of the evolutions of the structural parameters like long period (L m), micro-strain (ε m), orientation parameter (f 200), crystallinity (X c), and etc., lamellar separation is the main deformation mode in the linear elastic strain zone. And microphase separation of interlamellar amorphous, lamellar crystal slipping and melt-recrystallization are proposed to determinate the later non-linear mechanical behaviors in the three temperature regions, respectively. The full view of deformation mechanisms in the 2D temperature-strain space aids to deepen the understanding of the nonequilibrium structural evolutions in hard-elastic polyethylene films and guide the manufacture of high-performance microporous membranes with dry process. Structural evolutions of cellulose triacetate (CTA) film during uniaxial stretching process at different temperatures were studied by in-situ synchrotron radiation wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) combined with dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that four temperature regions can be divided for the CTA film stretching, in which different structural evolutions and deformation mechanisms will be observed. The structural evolutions of CTA film at temperatures between 60 and 125 °C (region I) are seriously influenced by the absorbed moisture, resulting in a large variation of the crystallinity ( χ c ). At temperatures around T g (195 °C), stretch-induced orientations for crystal can be achieved more easily although χ c and crystal size have no large change compared with the flexible-chain semi-crystalline polymers like polyethylene. Interestingly, the CTA film presents various deformation mechanisms including the elongation of amorphous and slipping, formation, destruction and recrystallization of crystals during stretching at different temperatures, which are often observed for the flexible-chain semi-crystalline polymers. These results can provide valuable guidance for the hot-stretching processing and application of CTA retardation film. Polymer films based on polyethylene (PE) and ionomer ethylene/methacrylic acid (EMAA) copolymer blend were prepared by film blowing, whose surface properties were tuned by varying processing parameters, i.e., take up ratio (TUR). Blends of PE/EMAA copolymer were firstly prepared by the melt-mixing method, before being further blown to films. The wettability of the film was investigated by measuring the contact angle/water-film encounter time, and optical properties, i.e., the haze and transmittance. The wettability was found to be enhanced with the increase of TUR. So too was the haze, while the transmittance was found to be almost independent of TUR. The XPS and AFM results directly show the increasing polar functional groups (–COO−) on the surface and roughness with increasing TUR. Further analysis of the 2D SAXS and WAXS unveiled the origin of the invariant transmittance, which resulted from the minor change of the crystallinity and the monotonic increase of the haze, with TUR resulting from the evolution of crystal orientation. In addition to other post-modification methods, the current study provides an alternative route to prepare large-scale PE films as the template for the advanced potential applications, i.e., covering in the layer of roof, the privacy of protective windows, and multitudes of packaging. The effects of stretching speed on the structural evolutions and mechanical behaviors of hard-elastic polyethylene films are studied with in-situ and ex-situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), scanning electronic microscope (SEM) and tensile tests in a wide stretching speed range (0.04–4 mm/s). Based on the evolutions of structural parameters extracted from SAXS results and the surface morphologies from SEM experiments, the stretching speed space can be divided into two regions with the boundary of 0.8 mm/s. Stress induced microphase separation of amorphous phase triggers the yielding behavior, which distributes more homogeneously with the increase of stretching speed. In region I, microphase separation tends to develop into cavities at smaller strain due to the thorough relaxation process of molecular chains in amorphous phases, which results in the inhomogeneous deformation during further stretching. In region II, the relaxation of molecular chains is not enough to response to the variation of external tensile field, thus inducing the uniform distribution of the occurrence of microphase separation. Mechanical and structural evolution of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) induced by uniaxial deformation at different concentrations of boric acid is systematically studied with in-situ synchrotron radiation small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS). The PVA films were stretched uniaxially in the aqueous solution at room temperature with concentrations of boric acid at 0.3 wt%, 1 wt% and 3 wt%, respectively. The stretching process can be divided into three stages through WAXS and SAXS results, whose boundary is the end of the crystallinity platform and the onset of the formation of nanofibrils. In the first stage, the films show elastic stretch with the crystallinity keeping constant and the d -spacing of (101) plane (d 101) decreasing. The unstable crystal breaks up and transfers into amorphous during the second stage so that the force is gradually removed from the unit cell. The connection between the crystal network breaks up in the third stage when the content of boric acid is not sufficient enough. Moreover, increasing the concentration of boric acid leads to the earlier emergence of nanofibrils due to the lower energy barrier induced by entropy decrease, which also results in a reduction of nanofibrils content by limiting the mobility of molecular chain. The results have been applied to establish relationships between the microstructure and the physical characteristics of PVA to help us tune the processing parameters during the practical production. •The structural evolution of poly (vinyl alcohol) at different concentrations of boric acid during stretch were investigated with in-suit WAXS and SAXS. •The addition of adequate boric acid can maintain the connection between the crystal. •Increasing the concentration of boric acid leads to the earlier emergence of nanofibrils. •The boric acid works as the crosslinking agent which limits the mobility of the molecular chain to form more nanofibrils.
