For distributed computing with Byzantine machines under Privacy Protection (PP) constraints, this paper develops a robust PP distributed quasi-Newton estimation, which only requires the node machines to transmit five vectors to the central processor with high asymptotic relative efficiency. Compared with the gradient descent strategy which requires more rounds of transmission and the Newton iteration strategy which requires the entire Hessian matrix to be transmitted, the novel quasi-Newton iteration has advantages in reducing privacy budgeting and transmission cost. Moreover, our PP algorithm does not depend on the boundedness of gradients and second-order derivatives. When gradients and second-order derivatives follow sub-exponential distributions, we offer a mechanism that can ensure PP with a sufficiently high probability. Furthermore, this novel estimator can achieve the optimal convergence rate and the asymptotic normality. We investigate self-excited axisymmetric oscillations of a lean premixed methane--air V-flame in a laminar annular jet. The flame is anchored near the rim of the centrebody, forming an inverted cone, while the strongest vorticity is concentrated along the outer shear layer of the annular jet. Consequently, the reaction and vorticity dynamics are largely separated, except where they coalesce near the flame tip. The global eigenmodes corresponding to the linearised reacting flow equations around the steady base state are computed in an axisymmetric setting. We identify an arc branch of eigenmodes exhibiting strong oscillations at the flame tip. The associated eigenvalues are robust with respect to domain truncation and numerical discretisation, and they become destabilised as the Reynolds number increases. The frequency of the leading eigenmode is found to correspond to the Lagrangian disturbance advection time from the nozzle outlet to the flame tip. Nonlinear time-resolved simulation further reveals notable hysteresis phenomena in the subcritical regime prior to instability. Hence, even when the flame is linearly stable, perturbations of sufficient amplitude can trigger limit-cycle oscillations and higher-dimensional dynamics sustained by nonlinear feedback. A Monte Carlo simulation of passive tracers in the unsteady flame suggests a nonlinear non-local instability mechanism. Notably, linear analysis of the subcritical time-averaged limit-cycle state yields eigenvalues that do not match the nonlinear periodic oscillation frequencies, attributed to the fundamentally nonlinear dynamics of the subcritical V-flame instability, where the dichromatic, non-local interaction cannot be approximated as a simple distortion of the mean flow.

This paper proposes a Robust One-Step Estimator(ROSE) to solve the Byzantine failure problem in distributed M-estimation when a moderate fraction of node machines experience Byzantine failures. To define ROSE, the algorithms use the robust Variance Reduced Median Of the Local(VRMOL) estimator to determine the initial parameter value for iteration, and communicate between the node machines and the central processor in the Newton-Raphson iteration procedure to derive the robust VRMOL estimator of the gradient, and the Hessian matrix so as to obtain the final estimator. ROSE has higher asymptotic relative efficiency than general median estimators without increasing the order of computational complexity. Moreover, this estimator can also cope with the problems involving anomalous or missing samples on the central processor. We prove the asymptotic normality when the parameter dimension p diverges as the sample size goes to infinity, and under weaker assumptions, derive the convergence rate. Numerical simulations and a real data application are conducted to evidence the effectiveness and robustness of ROSE.

This paper studies model checking for general parametric regression models having no dimension reduction structures on the predictor vector. Using any U-statistic type test as an initial test, this paper combines the sample-splitting and conditional studentization approaches to construct a COnditionally Studentized Test (COST). Whether the initial test is global or local smoothing-based; the dimension of the predictor vector and the number of parameters are fixed or diverge at a certain rate, the proposed test always has a normal weak limit under the null hypothesis. When the dimension of the predictor vector diverges to infinity at faster rate than the number of parameters, even the sample size, these results are still available under some conditions. This shows the potential of our method to handle higher dimensional problems. Further, the test can detect the local alternatives distinct from the null hypothesis at the fastest possible rate of convergence in hypothesis testing. We also discuss the optimal sample splitting in power performance. The numerical studies offer information on its merits and limitations in finite sample cases including the setting where the dimension of predictor vector equals the sample size. We propose two novel two-dimensional topological Dirac materials, planar PtN4C2 and Pt2N8C6, which exhibit graphene-like electronic structures with linearly dispersive Dirac-cone states exactly at the Fermi level. Moreover, the Dirac cone is anisotropic, resulting in anisotropic Fermi velocities and making it possible to realize orientation-dependent quantum devices. Using the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we have systemically studied the structural, electronic, and topological properties. We find that spin-orbit coupling opens a sizable topological band gap so that the materials can be classified as quantum spin Hall insulators as well as quantum valley Hall insulators. Helical edge states that reside in the insulating band gap connecting the bulk conduction and valence bands are observed. Our work not only expands the Dirac cone material family, but also provides a new avenue to searching for more two-dimensional topological quantum spin and valley Hall insulators., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

This study investigates the linear stability of a laminar premixed flame, anchored on a square cylinder and confined inside a channel. Many modern linear analysis concepts have been developed and validated around non-reacting bluff-body wake flows, and the objective of this paper is to explore whether those tools can be applied with the same success to the study of reacting flows in similar configurations. It is found that linear instability analysis of steady reacting flow states accurately predicts critical flow parameters for the onset of limit-cycle oscillations, when compared to direct numerical simulation performed with a simple one-step reaction scheme in the low Mach number limit. Furthermore, the linear analysis predicts a strong stabilising effect of flame ignition, consistent with documented experiments and numerical simulations. Instability in ignited wake flows is, however, found to set in at sufficiently high Reynolds number, and a linear wavemaker analysis characterises this instability as being driven by hydrodynamic mechanisms of a similar nature as in non-reacting wake flows. The frequency of nonlinear limit-cycle flame oscillations in this unstable regime is retrieved accurately by linear eigenmode analysis performed on the time-averaged mean flow, under the condition that the full set of the reacting flow equations is linearised. If, on the contrary, unsteadiness in the density and in the reaction rate are excluded from the linear model, then the congruence between linear and nonlinear dynamics is lost.

As a fundamental communicative service, email is playing an important role in both individual and corporate communications, which also makes it one of the most frequently attack vectors. An email's authenticity is based on an authentication chain involving multiple protocols, roles and services, the inconsistency among which creates security threats. Thus, it depends on the weakest link of the chain, as any failed part can break the whole chain-based defense. This paper systematically analyzes the transmission of an email and identifies a series of new attacks capable of bypassing SPF, DKIM, DMARC and user-interface protections. In particular, by conducting a "cocktail" joint attack, more realistic emails can be forged to penetrate the celebrated email services, such as Gmail and Outlook. We conduct a large-scale experiment on 30 popular email services and 23 email clients, and find that all of them are vulnerable to certain types of new attacks. We have duly reported the identified vulnerabilities to the related email service providers, and received positive responses from 11 of them, including Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud and Alibaba. Furthermore, we propose key mitigating measures to defend against the new attacks. Therefore, this work is of great value for identifying email spoofing attacks and improving the email ecosystem's overall security.

Gate tunable p-type multilayer tin mono-sulfide (SnS) field-effect transistor (FET) devices with SnS thickness between 50 and 100 nm were fabricated and studied to understand their performances. The devices showed anisotropic inplane conductance and room temperature field effect mobilities ~5 - 10 cm$^2$/Vs. However, the devices showed appreciable OFF state conductance and an ON-OFF ratio ~10 at room temperature. The weak gate tuning behavior in the depletion regime of SnS devices is explained by the finite carrier screening length effect which causes the existence of a conductive surface layer from intrinsic defects induced holes in SnS. Through etching and n-type surface doping by Cs2CO3 to reduce/compensate the not-gatable holes near SnS flake's top surface, the devices gained an order of magnitude improvement in the ON-OFF ratio and hole Hall mobility ~ 100 cm$^2$/Vs at room temperature is observed. This work suggests that in order to obtain effective switching and low OFF state power consumption, two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor based depletion mode FETs should limit their thickness to within the Debye screening length of carriers in the semiconductor.
