Electronic structure analysis is performed to study the properties of several Pb-containing 3d-intermetallics. Our study reveals that binary metastable Co3Pb and Fe3Pb intermetallic compounds exhibit very attractive intrinsic magnetic properties. We primarily focus on the magnetic anisotropic properties arising from the high spin-orbit coupling of the Pb atom. Decomposing the total anisotropy into intra- and interatomic contributions reveals a significant deviation from single ion anisotropy model with strong symmetric anisotropic pair interactions present. Furthermore, we consider magnetic properties of ternary Pb-based 3d-intermetallics which recently have been reported as stable or metastable. Giant magnetic anisotropy is found on Pb atoms in these systems. The origin of such strong anisotropy in La18Co28Pb3 appears from two sources: spin-orbit and interelectronic Breit couplings. The significance of Breit interaction for magnetic anisotropy in bulk systems has not been reported previously. The adaptive variational quantum dynamics simulation (AVQDS) method performs real-time evolution of quantum states using automatically generated parameterized quantum circuits that often contain substantially fewer gates than Trotter circuits. Here we report an improved version of the method, which we call AVQDS(T), by porting the Tiling Efficient Trial Circuits with Rotations Implemented Simultaneously (TETRIS) technique. The algorithm adaptively adds layers of disjoint unitary gates to the ansatz circuit so as to keep the McLachlan distance, a measure of the accuracy of the variational dynamics, below a fixed threshold. We perform benchmark noiseless AVQDS(T) simulations of quench dynamics in local spin models demonstrating that the TETRIS technique significantly reduces the circuit depth and two-qubit gate count. We also show a method based on eigenvalue truncation to solve the linear equations of motion for the variational parameters with enhanced noise resilience. Finally, we propose a way to substantially alleviate the measurement overhead of AVQDS(T) while maintaining high accuracy by synergistically integrating quantum circuit calculations on quantum processing units with classical calculations using, e.g., tensor networks to evaluate the quantum geometric tensor. We showcase that this approach enables AVQDS(T) to deliver more accurate results than simulations using a fixed ansatz of comparable final depth for a significant time duration with fewer quantum resources.

The discovery of novel quantum materials within ternary phase spaces containing antagonistic pair such as Fe with Bi, Pb, In, and Ag, presents significant challenges yet holds great potential. In this work, we investigate the stabilization of these immiscible pairs through the integration of Cerium (Ce), an abundant rare-earth and cost-effective element. By employing a machine learning (ML)-guided framework, particularly crystal graph convolutional neural networks (CGCNN), combined with first-principles calculations, we efficiently explore the composition/structure space and predict 9 stable and 37 metastable Ce-Fe-X (X=Bi, Pb, In and Ag) ternary compounds. Our findings include the identification of multiple new stable and metastable phases, which are evaluated for their structural and energetic properties. These discoveries not only contribute to the advancement of quantum materials but also offer viable alternatives to critical rare earth elements, underscoring the importance of Ce-based intermetallic compounds in technological applications.

Constraining the melting temperature of iron under Earth's inner core conditions is crucial for understanding core dynamics and planetary evolution. Here, we develop a deep potential (DP) model for iron that explicitly incorporates electronic entropy contributions governing thermodynamics under Earth's core conditions. Extensive benchmarking demonstrates the DP's high fidelity across relevant iron phases and extreme pressure and temperature conditions. Through thermodynamic integration and direct solid-liquid coexistence simulations, the DP predicts melting temperatures for iron at the inner core boundary, consistent with previous \textit{ab initio} results. This resolves the previous discrepancy of iron's melting temperature at ICB between the DP model and \textit{ab initio} calculation and suggests the crucial contribution of electronic entropy. Our work provides insights into machine learning melting behavior of iron under core conditions and provides the basis for future development of binary or ternary DP models for iron and other elements in the core.

We outline how pairs of strongly immiscible elements, referred to here as antagonistic pairs, can be used to synthesize ternary compounds with quasi-reduced dimensional motifs. By identifying third elements that are compatible with a given antagonistic pair, ternary compounds can be formed in which the third element segregates the immiscible atoms into spatially separated substructures. Quasi-low dimensional structural units are a natural consequence of the immiscible atoms seeking to avoid contact in the solid-state. As proof of principle, we present the discovery and physical properties of La$_4$Co$_4$X (X = Pb, Bi, Sb), a new family of intermetallics based on the antagonistic pairs Co-Pb and Co-Bi. La$_4$Co$_4$X adopts a new orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Pbam) containing quasi-2D Co slabs and La-X layers that stack along the a-axis. Consistent with our proposal, the La atoms separate the Co and X substructures, ensuring there are no direct contacts between immiscible atoms. Within the Co slabs, the atoms occupy the vertices of corner sharing tetrahedra and triangles, and this motif produces flat electronic bands near the Fermi level that favor magnetism. The Co is moment bearing in La$_4$Co$_4$X, and we show that whereas La$_4$Co$_4$Pb behaves as a three dimensional antiferromagnet with T$_N$ = 220 K, La$_4$Co$_4$Bi and La$_4$Co$_4$Sb have behavior consistent with low dimensional magnetic coupling and ordering, with T$_N$ = 153 K and 143 K respectively. In addition to the Pb, Bi, and Sb based La$_4$Co$_4$X compounds, we were likely able to produce an analogous La$_4$Co$_4$Sn in polycrystalline form, although we were unable to isolate single crystals. We anticipate that using mutually compatible third elements with an antagonistic pair represents a generalizable design principle for discovering new materials and structure types containing low-dimensional substructures.

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of a newly predicted stable ternary compound La$_{18}$Co$_{28}$Pb$_{3}$ are studied using electronic structure analysis. The ground state of this compound is ferromagnetic, with three positions of nonequivalent magnetic Co atoms. A strong dependence of magnetic properties on volume shows that this system is situated near the point of magnetic instability. A coexistence of high- and low-spin ferromagnetic states as a function of volume near equilibrium was discovered. A corresponding spin tunneling splitting was estimated. The stability of the theoretically predicted magnetic ground state was tested by varying the Hubbard parameter. The thermal spin fluctuations were added to estimate the paramagnetic moment and a Curie temperature. The necessity of experimental verification of the obtained results is emphasized.

Exploring high-temperature superconducting (high-$T_c$) material at ambient pressure holds immense significance for physics, chemistry, and materials science. In this study, we perform a high-throughput screening of strong electron-phonon interactions in X$_2$MH$_6$ compounds (X = Li, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ga, Rb, Sr, and In; M are $3d$, $4d$, and $5d$ transition metals). These compounds have a cubic structure featuring an MH$_6$ octahedron motif. Our screening calculations suggest that 26 compounds exhibit dynamic stability and strong electron-phonon coupling. Among these 26 compounds, Mg$_2$RhH$_6$, Mg$_2$IrH$_6$, Al$_2$MnH$_6$, and Li$_2$CuH$_6$ show promising energetic stability and $T_c$ of more than 50 K at ambient pressure. This study underscores promising high-$T_c$ compounds at ambient pressure with distinctive MH$_6$ motifs.

We applied the ab initio spin-polarized Correlation Matrix Renormalization Theory (CMRT) to the ferromagnetic state of the bulk BCC iron. We showed that it was capable of reproducing the equilibrium physical properties and the pressure-volume curve in good comparison with experiments. We then focused on the analysis of its local electronic correlations. By exploiting different local fluctuation-related physical quantities as measures of electronic correlation within target orbits, we elucidated the different roles of $t_{2g}$ and $e_g$ states in both spin channels and presented compelling evidence to showcase this distinction in their electronic correlation., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, regular article

We apply the adaptive variational quantum imaginary time evolution (AVQITE) method to prepare ground states of one-dimensional spin $S=1$ models. We compare different spin-to-qubit encodings (standard binary, Gray, unary, and multiplet) with regard to the performance and quantum resource cost of the algorithm. Using statevector simulations we study two well-known spin-1 models: the Blume-Capel model of transverse-field Ising spins with single-ion anisotropy, and the XXZ model with single-ion anisotropy. We consider system sizes of up to $20$ qubits, which corresponds to spin-$1$ chains up to length $10$. We determine the dependence of the number of CNOT gates in the AVQITE state preparation circuit on the encoding, the initial state, and the choice of operator pool in the adaptive method. Independent on the choice of encoding, we find that the CNOT gate count scales cubically with the number of spins for the Blume-Capel model and quartically for the anistropic XXZ model. However, the multiplet and Gray encodings present smaller prefactors in the scaling relations. In this paper, we consider a coupling mechanism between the kinetic term and the gravity, in which a coupling function $F(R)$ is introduced into the kinetic term of the five-dimensional scalar field. Based on this scenario, we investigate the localization of scalar fields in three specific braneworld models: the Minkowski brane, the de Sitter brane, and the Anti-de Sitter brane. The brane models considered here are regular with no singularity for scalar curvature. For the Minkowshi brane case, the zero mode can always be localized on the brane, and the massive modes can be localized or quasi-localized on the brane. For the dS$_4$ brane case, two forms of factor $F(R)$ is considered. The zero mode can always be localized, and the massive modes could be quasi-localized on the brane. Besides, with the second coupling factor, the scalar zero mode could be localized on the both sides of the origin of extra dimension, while the massive modes could be quasi-localized on the origin. Lastly, for the AdS$_4$ brane case, the localization of the scalar zero mode requires the consideration of a coupling potential $V(\Phi,\varphi)$, while the massive modes can still be localized on the brane with an infinite number., Comment: 34pages, 17 figures, 2 tables,published in JHEP

Boron carbon compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. In our earlier paper [Zheng et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 014508 (2023)], we identified a new conventional superconductor of LiB3C at 100 GPa. Here, we aim to extend the investigation of possible superconductivity in this structural framework by replacing Li atoms with 27 different cations under pressures ranging from 0 to 100 GPa. Using the high-throughput screening method of zone-center electron-phonon interaction, we find that ternary compounds like CaB3C, SrB3C, TiB3C, and VB3C are promising candidates for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm that they have Tc < 31 K at moderate pressures. Our study demonstrates that fast screening of superconductivity by calculating zone-center electron-phonon coupling strength is an effective strategy for high-throughput identification of new superconductors.

Ni is the second most abundant element in the Earth's core. Yet, its effects on the inner core's structure and formation process are usually disregarded because of its electronic and size similarity with Fe. Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we find that the bcc phase can spontaneously crystallize in liquid Ni at temperatures above Fe's melting point at inner core pressures. The melting temperature of Ni is shown to be 700-800 K higher than that of Fe at 323-360 GPa. hcp, bcc, and liquid phase relation differ for Fe and Ni. Ni can be a bcc stabilizer for Fe at high temperatures and inner core pressures. A small amount of Ni can accelerate Fe's crystallization at core pressures. These results suggest Ni may substantially impact the structure and formation process of the solid inner core.

Terrestrial exoplanets are of great interest for being simultaneously similar to and different from Earth. Their compositions are likely comparable to those of solar-terrestrial objects, but their internal pressures and temperatures can vary significantly with their masses/sizes. The most abundant non-volatile elements are O, Mg, Si, Fe, Al, and Ca, and there has been much recent progress in understanding the nature of magnesium silicates up to and beyond ~3 TPa. However, a critical element, Fe, has yet to be systematically included in materials discovery studies of potential terrestrial planet-forming phases at ultra-high pressures. Here, using the adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) crystal structure prediction method, we predict several unreported stable crystalline phases in the binary Fe-Mg and ternary Fe-Mg-O systems up to pressures of 3 TPa. The analysis of the local packing motifs of the low-enthalpy Fe-Mg-O phases reveals that the Fe-Mg-O system favors a BCC motif under ultra-high pressures regardless of chemical composition. Besides, oxygen enrichment is conducive to lowering the enthalpies of the Fe-Mg-O phases. Our results extend the current knowledge of structural information of the Fe-Mg-O system to exoplanet pressures.

Laser-driven coherent phonons can act as modulated strain fields and modify the adiabatic ground state topology of quantum materials. Here we use time-dependent first-principles and effective model calculations to simulate the effect of the coherent phonon induced by strong terahertz electric field on electronic carriers in the topological insulator ZrTe$_5$. We show that a coherent $A_\text{1g}$ Raman mode modulation can effectively pump carriers across the band gap, even though the phonon energy is about an order of magnitude smaller than the equilibrium band gap. We reveal the microscopic mechanism of this effect which occurs via Landau-Zener-St\"uckelberg tunneling of Bloch electrons in a narrow region in the Brillouin zone center where the transient energy gap closes when the system switches from strong to weak topological insulator. Classification is a common method to study quantum entanglement, and local unitary equivalence (LU-equivalence) is an effective classification tool. The purpose of this work is to show how to determine the LU-equivalence of sets of generalized Bell states (GBSs) in an arbitrary dimensional bipartite quantum system $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d}$ ($d$ is an integer no less than 3). The idea is that, for a given GBS set $\mathcal{M}$, try to find all the GBS sets that are LU-equivalent to $\mathcal{M}$, then we can determine whether another GBS set is LU-equivalent to $\mathcal{M}$ by comparison. In order to accomplish this intention, we first reduce the LU-equivalence of two GBS sets to the unitary conjugate equivalence (UC-equivalence) of two generalized Pauli matrix (GPM) sets. Then we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for a 2-GPM set UC-equivalent to a special 2-GPM set $\{ X^{a}, Z^{b} \}$ ($a, b$ are nonnegative integers and factors of $d$). The general case, that is, the UC-equivalence of two general GPM sets, follows by the particular case. Moreover, these results are programmable, that is, we provide programs that can give all standard GPM sets that are UC-equivalent to a given GPM set, as well as programs that can determine all standard GPM sets that are unitary equivalent (U-equivalent) to a given GPM set, and then the U-equivalence of two arbitrary GPM sets (or LU-equivalence of two GBS sets) can be determined by comparison. To illustrate the role of the programs, we provide two examples, one showing that all 4-GBS sets (58905 items) in $\mathbb{C}^{6}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{6}$ can be divided into 31 LU-equivalence classes, and the other providing a complete LU-equivalent classification of all 4-GBS sets in $\mathbb{C}^{4}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{4}$., Comment: 17 pages, 16 tables

Pursuit of superconductivity in light-element systems at ambient pressure is of great experimental and theoretical interest. In this work, we combine a machine learning (ML) method with first-principles calculations to efficiently search for the energetically favorable ternary Ca-B-C compounds. Three new layered borocarbides (stable CaBC5 and metastable Ca2BC11 and CaB3C3) are predicted to be phonon-mediated superconductors at ambient pressure. The hexagonal CaB3C3 possesses the highest Tc of 26.05 K among the three compounds. The {\sigma}-bonging bands around the Fermi level account for the large electron-phonon coupling ({\lambda} = 0.980) of hexagonal CaB3C3. The ML-guided approach opens up a way for greatly accelerating the discovery of new high-Tc superconductors.

Using an artificial neural-network machine learning interatomic potential, we have performed molecular dynamics simulations to study the structure and dynamics of Fe90Si3O7 liquid close to the Earth's liquid core conditions. The simulation results reveal that the short-range structural order (SRO) in the Fe90Si3O7 liquid is very strong. About 80% of the atoms are arranged in crystalline-like SRO motifs. In particular, ~70% of Fe-centered clusters can be classified as either hexagonal-close-pack (HCP/HCP-like) or icosahedral (ICO/ICO-like) SRO motifs. The SRO clusters centered on Fe, Si, or O atoms are strongly intermixed and homogenously distributed throughout the liquid. The atomic structure of the liquid and the fractions of dominant SRO clusters are not sensitive to pressure/temperature used in the simulations except that the SRO of the O-centered clusters is enhanced close to inner core pressures. The O diffusion coefficient is about 2-3 times larger than the Fe and Si ions and increases more rapidly in the deeper core regions.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, which are produced by the precise assemblies of varieties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, have demonstrated many novel properties and functionalities. Here we report a nano-plasmonic study of vdW heterostructures that were produced by depositing ordered molecular layers of pentacene on top of graphene. We find through nano-infrared (IR) imaging that surface plasmons formed due to the collective oscillations of Dirac fermions in graphene are highly sensitive to the adjacent pentacene layers. In particular, the plasmon wavelength declines systematically but nonlinearly with increasing pentacene thickness. Further analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the observed peculiar thickness dependence is mainly due to the tunneling-type electron transfer from pentacene to graphene. Our work unveils a new method for tailoring graphene plasmons and deepens our understanding of the intriguing nano-optical phenomena due to interlayer couplings in novel vdW heterostructures., Comment: 21 pages

We report a nano-infrared (IR) imaging study of trilayer graphene (TLG) with both ABA (Bernal) and ABC (rhombohedral) stacking orders using the scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM). With s-SNOM operating in the mid-IR region, we mapped in real space the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) of ABA-TLG and ABC-TLG, which are tunable with electrical gating. Through quantitative modeling of the plasmonic imaging data, we found that the plasmon wavelength of ABA-TLG is significantly larger than that of ABC-TLG, resulting in a sizable impedance mismatch and hence a strong plasmon reflection at the ABA/ABC lateral junction. Further analysis indicates that the different plasmonic responses of the two types of TLG are directly linked to their electronic structures and carrier properties. Our work uncovers the physics behind the stacking-dependent plasmonic responses of TLG and sheds light on future applications of TLG and the ABA/ABC junctions in IR plasmonics and planar nano-optics., Comment: 11 pages

Ground-state properties, such as energies and double occupancies, of a one-dimensional two-band Hubbard model are calculated using a first principles Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization theory. The favorable agreement with the results from the density matrix renormalization group theory demonstrates the accuracy of our method. A rotationally invariant approach is further incorporated into the method to greatly reduce the computational complexity with a speedup of 300 times. Moreover, we investigate the Mott transition between a metal and a Mott insulator by evaluating the charge gap. With greatly reduced computational effort, our method reproduces the phase diagram in reasonable agreement with the density matrix renormalization group theory.

We perform a high-throughput screening on phonon-mediated superconductivity in ternary metal diboride structure with alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metals. We find 17 ground states and 78 low-energy metastable phases. From fast calculations of zone-center electron-phonon coupling, 43 compounds are revealed to show electron-phonon coupling strength higher than that of MgB2. An anti-correlation between energetic stability and electron-phonon coupling strength is identified. We suggest two phases, i.e., Li3ZrB8 and Ca3YB8, to be synthesized, which show reasonable energetic stability and superconducting critical temperature., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures
