Abstract

A molecule complex exhibiting reversible on–off switching between spin crossover and single-molecule magnet behaviours via a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation is reported., The on–off switching of spin-crossover (SCO) and single-molecule magnetism (SMM) remains highly attractive, especially if it involves dynamic crystal-to-crystal transformation. Herein we report the first molecule, a mononuclear cobalt(ii) complex, that exhibits on–off switching between SCO and SMM reversibly during crystal-to-crystal transformation. Subtle structural transformation triggered by a simple dehydration–rehydration process induces significant geometrical changes of the CoII center and modification of the supramolecular interactions and switches its colour and magnetic properties (dark red/SCO-on/SMM-off ↔ orange/SCO-off/SMM-on). This work suggests that modification of the weak supramolecular interactions could be very effective in achieving switchable materials involving both SCO and SMM properties.

Abstract

In recent years, ferroelectromagnetic laminated composites have aroused worldwide research interest. In this paper, we developed a closed-form solution for antiplane mechanical and in-plane electric and magnetic fields for a crack between two dissimilar magnetoelectroelastic layers of finite thickness. Explicit expressions for stresses, electric and magnetic fields, together with their intensity factors are obtained for the two extreme cases of an impermeable and a permeable crack. Solutions for some special cases, such as a homogeneous magnetoelectroelastic layer, two magnetoelectroelastic layers with opposite poling directions, and a piezoelectric layer bonded to a piezomagnetic layer are also obtained. Explicit relations between the field intensity factors and the energy release rates for the interface crack are provided. [DOI: 10.1115/1.2083827]

Abstract

This paper investigates the applicability and effect of the crack-free electrical boundary conditions in piezoelectric fracture. By treating flaws in a medium as notches with a finite width, the results from different electrical boundary condition assumptions on the crack faces are compared. It is found that the electrically impermeable boundary is a reasonable one for engineering problems. Unless the flaw interior is filled with conductive media, the permeable crack assumption may not be directly applied to the fracture of piezoelectric materials in engineering applications.
