This paper presents chemical abundances of twelve elements (C, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, and Fe) for 80 FGK dwarfs in the Pleiades open cluster, which span a temperature range of $\sim$2000 K in T$_{\rm eff}$, using the high-resolution (R$\sim$22,500) near-infrared SDSS-IV/APOGEE spectra ($\lambda$1.51--1.69 \micron). Using a 1D LTE abundance analysis, we determine an overall metallicity of [Fe/H]=+0.03$\pm$0.04 dex, with the elemental ratios [$\alpha$/Fe]=+0.01$\pm$0.05, [odd-z/Fe]=-0.04$\pm$0.08, and [iron peak/Fe]=-0.02$\pm$0.08. These abundances for the Pleiades are in line with the abundances of other open clusters at similar galactocentric distances as presented in the literature. Examination of the abundances derived from each individual spectral line revealed that several of the stronger lines displayed trends of decreasing abundance with decreasing $T_{\rm eff}$. The list of spectral lines that yield abundances that are independent of $T_{\rm eff}$ are presented and used for deriving the final abundances. An investigation into possible causes of the temperature-dependent abundances derived from the stronger lines suggests that the radiative codes and the APOGEE line list we employ may inadequately model van der Waals broadening, in particular in the cooler K dwarfs., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, and 4 tables. Stellar magnetic fields have a major impact on space weather around exoplanets orbiting low-mass stars. From an analysis of Zeeman-broadened Fe I lines measured in near-infrared SDSS/APOGEE spectra, mean magnetic fields are determined for a sample of 29 M dwarf stars that host closely orbiting small exoplanets. The calculations employed the radiative transfer code Synmast and MARCS stellar model atmospheres. The sample M dwarfs are found to have measurable mean magnetic fields ranging between $\sim$0.2 to $\sim$1.5 kG, falling in the unsaturated regime on the $<$B$>$ vs P$_{\rm rot}$ plane. The sample systems contain 43 exoplanets, which include 23 from Kepler, nine from K2, and nine from TESS. We evaluated their equilibrium temperatures, insolation, and stellar habitable zones and found that only Kepler-186f and TOI-700d are inside the habitable zones of their stars. Using the derived values of $<$B$>$ for the stars Kepler-186 and TOI-700 we evaluated the minimum planetary magnetic field that would be necessary to shield the exoplanets Kepler-186f and TOI-700d from their host star's winds, considering reference magnetospheres with sizes equal to those of the present-day and young Earth, respectively. Assuming a ratio of 5$\%$ between large-to-small scale B-fields, and a young-Earth magnetosphere, Kepler-186f and TOI-700d would need minimum planetary magnetic fields of, respectively, 0.05 and 0.24 G. These values are considerably smaller than Earth's magnetic field of 0.25 G$\lesssim$B$\lesssim$0.65 G, which suggests that these two exoplanets might have magnetic fields sufficiently strong to protect their atmospheres and surfaces from stellar magnetic fields., Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

Average magnetic field measurements are presented for 62 M-dwarf members of the Pleiades open cluster, derived from Zeeman-enhanced Fe I lines in the H-band. An MCMC methodology was employed to model magnetic filling factors using SDSS-IV APOGEE high-resolution spectra, along with the radiative transfer code SYNMAST, MARCS stellar atmosphere models, and the APOGEE DR17 spectral line list. There is a positive correlation between mean magnetic fields and stellar rotation, with slow-rotator stars (Rossby number, Ro$>$0.13) exhibiting a steeper slope than rapid-rotators (Ro$<$0.13). However, the latter sample still shows a positive trend between Ro and magnetic fields, which is given by $<$B$>$ = 1604 $\times$ Ro$^{-0.20}$. The derived stellar radii, when compared with physical isochrones, show that on average, our sample shows radius inflation, with median enhanced radii ranging from +3.0$\%$ to +7.0$\%$, depending on the model. There is a positive correlation between magnetic field strength and radius inflation, as well as with stellar spot coverage, correlations that together indicate that stellar spot-filling factors generated by strong magnetic fields might be the mechanism that drives radius inflation in these stars. We also compare our derived magnetic fields with chromospheric emission lines (H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and Ca II K), as well as with X-ray and H$\alpha$ to bolometric luminosity ratios, and find that stars with higher chromospheric and coronal activity tend to be more magnetic., Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ); doi:10.3847/1538-4357/ad571f

Exoplanets hosting M dwarfs are the best targets to characterize Earth-like or super-Earth planetary atmospheres with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We determine detailed stellar parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$, log$g$, and $\xi$) and individual abundances of twelve elements for four cool M dwarfs hosting exoplanets TOI-1685, GJ 436, GJ 3470, and TOI-2445, scheduled for future observations by the JWST. The analysis utilizes high-resolution near-infrared spectra from the SDSS-IV APOGEE survey between 1.51-1.69$\mu$. Based on 1D-LTE plane-parallel models, we find that TOI-2445 is slightly metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -0.16$\pm$0.09), while TOI-1685, GJ 436 and GJ 3470 are more metal-rich ([Fe/H] = 0.06$\pm$0.18, 0.10$\pm$0.20 dex, 0.25$\pm$0.15). The derived C/O ratios for TOI-2445, TOI-1685, GJ 436, and GJ 3470 are 0.526$\pm$0.027, 0.558$\pm$0.097, 0.561$\pm$0.029, and 0.638$\pm$0.015, respectively. From results for 28 M dwarfs analyzed homogeneously from APOGEE spectra, we find exoplanet-hosting M dwarfs exhibit a C/O abundance ratio approximately 0.01 to 0.05 higher than those with non-detected exoplanets, at limits of a statistically significant offset. A linear regression of [Fe/H] \textit{vs.} C/O distribution reveals a noticeable difference in the angular coefficient between FGK dwarfs (0.27) and M dwarfs (0.13). Assuming our abundance ratios of Ca/Mg, Si/Mg, Al/Mg, and Fe/Mg, we determine a mass of 3.276$^{+0.448}_{-0.419}$$M_{\oplus}$ for TOI-2445 b, having density (6.793$^{+0.005}_{-0.099}$ g.cm$^{-3}$) and core mass fraction (0.329$_{-0.049}^{+0.028}$) very similar to Earth's. We present a spectroscopic analysis of a sample of 48 M dwarf stars ($0.2 M_{\odot}< M < 0.6 M_{\odot}$) from the Hyades open cluster using high-resolution H-band spectra from the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Our methodology adopts spectrum synthesis with LTE MARCS model atmospheres, along with the APOGEE DR17 line list, to determine effective temperatures, surface gravities, metallicities, and projected rotational velocities. The median metallicity obtained for the Hyades M dwarfs is [M/H]= 0.09$\pm$0.03 dex, indicating a small internal uncertainty and good agreement with optical results for Hyades red-giants. Overall, the median radii are larger than predicted by stellar models by 1.6$\pm$2.3\% and 2.4$\pm$2.3\%, relative to a MIST and DARTMOUTH isochrone, respectively. We emphasize, however, that these isochrones are different and the fractional radius inflation for the fully- and partially-convective regimes have distinct behaviors depending on the isochrone. Using a MIST isochrone there is no evidence of radius inflation for the fully convective stars, while for the partially convective M-dwarfs the radii are inflated by 2.7$\pm$2.1\%, which is in agreement with predictions from models that include magnetic fields. For the partially-convective stars, rapid-rotators present on average higher inflation levels than slow-rotators. The comparison with SPOTS isochrone models indicates that the derived M dwarf radii can be explained by accounting for stellar spots in the photosphere of the stars, with 76\% of the studied M dwarfs having up to 20\% spot coverage, and the most inflated stars with $\sim$20 -- 40\% spot coverage., Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

We report 23 stars having Galactocentric velocities larger than $450~\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1}$ in the final data release of the APOGEE survey. This sample was generated using space velocities derived by complementing the high quality radial velocities from the APOGEE project in Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Data Release 17 (DR17) with distances and proper motions from Gaia early Data Release 3 (eDR3). We analyze the observed kinematics and derived dynamics of these stars, considering different potential models for the Galaxy. We find that three stars could be unbound depending on the adopted potential, but in general all of the stars show typical kinematics of halo stars. The APOGEE DR17 spectroscopic results and Gaia eDR3 photometry are used to assess the stellar parameters and chemical properties of the stars. All of the stars belong to the red giant branch, and, in general, they follow the abundance pattern of typical halo stars. There are a few exceptions that would deserve further analysis through high-resolution spectroscopy. In particular, we identify a high velocity Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) star, with Galactocentric velocity of 482 km\,s$^{-1}$. This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Local Volume Mapper (LVM) and Black Hole Mapper (BHM) surveys., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. We present spectroscopic determinations of the effective temperatures, surface gravities and metallicities for 21 M-dwarfs observed at high-resolution (R $\sim$ 22,500) in the \textit{H}-band as part of the SDSS-IV APOGEE survey. The atmospheric parameters and metallicities are derived from spectral syntheses with 1-D LTE plane parallel MARCS models and the APOGEE atomic/molecular line list, together with up-to-date H$_{2}$O and FeH molecular line lists. Our sample range in $T_{\rm eff}$ from $\sim$ 3200 to 3800K, where eleven stars are in binary systems with a warmer (FGK) primary, while the other 10 M-dwarfs have interferometric radii in the literature. We define an $M_{K_{S}}$--Radius calibration based on our M-dwarf radii derived from the detailed analysis of APOGEE spectra and Gaia DR2 distances, as well as a mass-radius relation using the spectroscopically-derived surface gravities. A comparison of the derived radii with interferometric values from the literature finds that the spectroscopic radii are slightly offset towards smaller values, with $\Delta$ = -0.01 $\pm$ 0.02 $R{\star}$/$R_{\odot}$. In addition, the derived M-dwarf masses based upon the radii and surface gravities tend to be slightly smaller (by $\sim$5-10\%) than masses derived for M-dwarf members of eclipsing binary systems for a given stellar radius. The metallicities derived for the 11 M-dwarfs in binary systems, compared to metallicities obtained for their hotter FGK main-sequence primary stars from the literature, shows excellent agreement, with a mean difference of [Fe/H](M-dwarf - FGK primary) = +0.04 $\pm$ 0.18 dex, confirming the APOGEE metallicity scale derived here for M-dwarfs., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 2 tables and 11 figures
