Objectives: Up to 60% of people with dementia living in care homes will 'wander' at some point, which has typically been seen by staff as a problematic behaviour. A range of non-pharmacological interventions have been tested to either support or prevent wandering. However, even recent innovative practice continues to maintain a focus on reducing or preventing wandering. This study aimed to identify, for the first time, care home staff perspectives on home level factors that facilitate or hinder them supporting residents to wander safely. Method: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 19 care home staff, working in the North of England. Framework analysis was used to analyse the data. Results: A range of environmental considerations were identified by staff. Care home design influenced how residents were able to move safely around, and inclusion of points of interest encouraged walking to different locations, such as a garden. Staff worried about managing access to other residents' rooms by people who wander. Within the care home culture, prioritising safe staffing levels, training and awareness, involving external healthcare professionals where required and mentorship from experienced staff members, all contributed towards safe wandering. Staff support for positive risk-taking within the care home was key to promote person-centred care, alongside careful oversight and management of relationships between residents. Conclusion: We identified a range of cultural and environmental factors that contribute towards safe wandering. A positive approach to risk-taking by staff is required to support residents to engage in wandering as an enjoyable activity, whilst acknowledging that there are inherent risks associated with this. The motif of travel has always been popular, and the metaphor of life as a path remains extremely powerful. Both seem to be especially important within Christian culture because of the image of Christ the Wanderer, who "has no place to lay his head", an image that influenced the growing popularity of pilgrimages and religiously motivated wandering. The latter became particularly widespread in Russian culture and resulted in numerous representations of wandering people in Russian art and literature. In my article, I focus on literary representations of wanderers in the oeuvre of Nikolai Leskov, whose works are abundant with these types of characters. I argue that the writer portrays his wanderers as ambivalent eccentrics who combine elements characteristic of diverse types of travelers, both religious and secular. To prove my hypothesis, I combine traditional literary analysis of Leskov's texts with the examination of cultural and religious practices of Russian wandering. As I demonstrate, the complexity and multifacetedness of the writer's wanderers correspond with Russian reality, where the boundary between pilgrims and vagrants was also blurred. Objective: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of using a GPS tracker to mitigate the risks associated with wandering for people with dementia and those caring for them and further evaluate the impact of trackers in delaying 24-hour care and the potential for reducing the involvement of support services, such as the police, in locating patients. Methods: We recruited forty-five wearers-carers dyads, and a GPS tracker was issued to each participant. Dyads completed pre-and post-outcome questionnaires after six months, and a use-log of experiences was maintained through monthly monitoring calls. At six months, focus groups were conducted with 14 dyads where they shared ideas and learning. Data analyses were performed on outcome questionnaires, use-log analysis, and focus groups discussion. Results: A 24% (N = 14) attrition rate was recorded, with 76% (N = 34) of the participants completing pre- and post-outcome questionnaires, of which 41% (N = 14) attended four focus group meetings. Participants reported enhanced independence for wearers as fewer restrictions were placed on their movements, peace of mind and reduced burden for the carers with less need to involve police or social services, and delays in 24-hour care. Conclusion: The results supported the feasibility of routine implementation of GPS trackers in dementia care with clear guidance, monitoring and support to family carers on safe use. This could delay admission into 24-hour care as wearers and carers have a greater sense of safety and are better connected should help be required. Studies with larger sample sizes, diverse participants and health economic analysis are needed to develop the evidence base further ahead of the routine implementation of GPS trackers in health and social care services. As the elderly population rises, the growth rate of age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive impairments increases. Wandering is one of the first and the most progressive and challenging behaviors; that manifest with certain patterns in the mobility behavior of the patients in the early stages of the disease. Timely diagnosis of wandering can prevent irreparable damages, including the risk of losing the patient, severe physical injuries caused by accidents, and even death. So far, numerous studies have focused on the development of wandering detection algorithms. Most of these mainly rely on two approaches of extracting features from patients’ trajectory history and estimating the path complexity. Motion signal processing methods have rarely been used in this area. An important consideration for these patients is the instability in their movement behaviors, which has received limited attention in previous research, leading to less compatibility of models with this feature. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm based on motion signal processing using the Short-time Fourier transform (STFT). This algorithm detects wandering patterns only by using the patient’s trajectory data and changes in their zero and non-zero frequency components. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated using the Geolife open-source dataset, considering the macro-average of metrics such as accuracy, precision, specificity, recall, and F-score, achieving respective values of 96.38%, 94.89%, 96.36%, 96.36%, and 95.58%. The results have validated the proposed algorithm’s strong performance in diagnosing wandering behavior, which, on one hand, helps prevent adverse consequences and, on the other hand, aids in the diagnosis and predicting the progression of the disease to severe Alzheimer’s stage.

Wandering is a symptom of dementia that can have devastating consequences on the lives of persons living with dementia and their families and caregivers. Increasingly, caregivers are turning towards electronic tracking devices to help manage wandering. Ethical questions have been raised regarding these location-based technologies and although qualitative research has been conducted to gain better insight into various stakeholders' views on the topic, developers of these technologies have been largely excluded. No qualitative research has focused on developers’ perceptions of ethics related to electronic tracking devices. To address this, we performed a qualitative semi-structured interview study based on grounded theory. We interviewed 15 developers of electronic tracking devices to better understand how they perceive ethical issues surrounding the design, development, and use of these devices within dementia care. Our results reveal that developers are strongly motivated by moral considerations and believe that including stakeholders throughout the development process is critical for success. Developers felt a strong sense of moral obligation towards topics within their control and a weaker sense of moral obligation towards topics outside their control. This leads to a perceived moral boundary between development and use, where some moral responsibility is shifted to end-users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is introductory in nature, seeking as it does to shed preliminary light on issues relating to the connections between philosophy and travel. Its primary claim is that it is valuable to conceive of philosophy as a specific type of journey, and to contrast it with the philosophical conception of travel. Both philosophy and travel may converge in a specific activity that is worth characterizing, at least in broad terms, in order to enrich each of them with aspects that would not be visible when considering them separately. Initially, some of the earliest uses of terms related to philosophical activity in early Greek thought, as well as an iconic fragment from Plato's Symposium, are analyzed. On this basis, certain characteristics of the philosophical journey will be demonstrated. Subsequently, the phenomenon of travel itself will be subjected to philosophical reflection, resulting in the delineation of one of its possible forms--the eidetic journey. Socrates' philosophy has a very peculiar character due to the absence of wellestablished doctrines and the unbreakable bond between life and thought. For this reason, Socratic philosophy must be understood along with his street wanderings and the constant revision of any intellectual approach. Starting from this hypothesis, this paper aims to show both the originality of Socratic thought and his notion of philosophy, as well as the enormous influence he exerts on Plato, who subtly employs these wanderings and digressions in his texts to enrich the dialogue, providing depth to the arguments, and forcing the reader to travel that same winding road that is philosophical thought. In the first part, I present the background of the Polish–Dutch cooperation initiated in the early 1970s by Slavists from the University of Amsterdam. Referring to archival letters and memoirs of the participants in the events, I reconstructed the history of research trips to Amsterdam by literary theorists from the Institute of Literary Research in Warsaw. The second part of the article focuses on a combined analysis of memoir and literary texts by Michał Głowiński – one of these theorists – that refer to his stay in the Dutch capital. I put forward a thesis that there are numerous analogies between the descriptions of Amsterdam and his native Pruszków. In an attempt to interpret this nonobvious convergence, I focus on the recurring themes of wandering in a foreign space and “taming” it in Głowiński’s work. These motifs turn out to be crucial for the analysis of Głowiński’s “Amsterdam texts,” such as the short story “Bar Ganimed.” [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines how the figure of the labyrinth helps us to grasp the particular writing of Henri Michaux. Based on a reading of Déplacements, dégagements, it will show how the aesthetic experience of wandering arises from compositional processes of the multiple. This double perspective, both poetic and aesthetic, allows us to grasp the specificity of labyrinthine wandering, which suggests the infinite within a structure that is however finite. It is not the absence of any signification, but the multiplication and proliferation of significant data, that produces wandering. Confronted with this multiplicity, the reader is not confined to a passive state of reception, but actively projects a trajectory in order to give meaning on all his perceptual details, even if this meaning remains unstable. Partially/fully self-driven trucks in platoon configurations promise to increase transport efficiency, reduce fuel consumption/gas emissions and improve road safety through the use of connectivity technologies and automated driving support systems. However, truck platooning means the introduction of new types of loads on pavements which are characterised by: multiple loads, generated by the multi-axle configurations of the different trucks forming the platoon, traffic channelisation by the reduction of the lateral deviation of the trucks, and reduced inter-truck time gaps, which may reduce the self-recovery capacity of asphalt concrete materials, reducing the pavement service life. In this context, this study presents a parametric analysis carried out to evaluate a pavement structure subjected to several platoon truck configurations. The results of the study indicated that to keep the same pavement structural response as for individual trucks, it is possible to act on the following parameters in the platoon configuration: traffic distribution along the year and along the time of the day (avoiding traffic at higher temperatures), percentage of platoon penetration in the daily and annual traffic, level of loading of the trucks, number of trucks in platoon configuration, wandering, and inter-truck time-gaps/distances. This article addresses the issue of wandering in Alzheimer's disease from a psychoanalytic point of view, taking into account the importance of the spatial dimension in psychic dynamics. After having presented wandering from a behavioral point of view, it is discussed from a metapsychological perspective, making use of A. & G. Haddad's concept of the "viatoric drive" and as well as J. Lacan's reflections on "the wandering of the journey" and "the wandering of desire." The clinical vignette of Mr. M. in a workshop of therapeutic mediation through art helps us illustrate the unconscious psychic movements at play in walking. Three subjective markers emerge: wandering reveals the subject's difficult in orienting himself in both physical and psychological space, demonstrating a form of excitation that is not supported by the viatoric drive; "the wandering of the journey" makes it possible to relocate the place of the Other in the Imaginary; "the wandering of desire" incites the subject to repetition through the play of the drives. Neurodegenerative disease is an obstacle to wandering. Art-therapy workshops can help Alzheimer's patients with the reorganization of wandering, where unconscious knowledge would prevail over the excitation of ambulation, thus suggesting, for the subject, the possibility of a structuring "elsewhere." Thinking of mediated workshops as places of creation for the subject opens up the possibility of inhabiting one's wandering, considered as expressions of a journey and of desire. I apply the Zhuangzi 莊子 to assess the contemporary value of personal autonomy. Focusing on two concepts, wuwei 無為 and you 遊, I clarify the "wandering ideal" in the Zhuangzi to challenge the ideal of autonomy as central to a well-lived life. Drawing on Sneddon's persuasive recent account of autonomy, the Inner Chapters of the Zhuangzi, as well as recent secondary scholarship on the text, I show that the wandering ideal suggests a stark move away from the controlled and self-reflective life of the autonomous person. My goal is to draw on the Zhuangzi to contribute to dialogue on the ideal of autonomy, rather than to provide an innovative way of reading the Zhuangzi. I argue that both autonomy and wandering are higher-order ideals that can be applied to individual actions and to a person's form of life, but at both levels, wandering and personal autonomy are in tension. Bringing together a genealogy of authors, concepts, and aesthetic case studies, this article aims to contribute to the discussion on ordinary aesthetics by focusing on the tensions that are intrinsic to walking as a fundamental embodied action in everyday urban life. These tensions concern the movement of walking itself and its relation to one’s surroundings, but it also concerns a certain complementarity between home (familiarity) and wandering. Experiencing space and thresholds that disrupt one’s relationship with home and the everyday can be understood as part of a modern “anti-home” tendency that lies at the core of several artistic and aesthetic practices. On the other hand, the study of walking and its relationship with the ordinary has also been enhanced and complexified by the mediation of images and technologies of reproduction. Approaching the paradoxes and ambiguities of everydayness from the perspective of walking allows us to better understand the ordinary as an in-between concept composed of evidence and mystery, familiarity and strangeness. Walking itself, as an ordinary element of life, is an unstable stabilisation, an unconsciousness that may become awareness, an immersive action that knows interruptions, a way of repeating paths that can also lead to detours and discoveries.

A 62-year-old woman presented with chronic cough. Chest CT showed multiple nodules and consolidation. Bronchoscopy could not confirm a specific diagnosis. Because her symptoms and lung opacities improved spontaneously, she was followed without treatment. Seven months later, chest radiography showed worsening of consolidation and a tumorous shadow. After performing cervical lymph node and lung tissue biopsies, we diagnosed her as having angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL). Cases of AITL showing migration of lung shadows have not been reported. AITL development is influenced by immunodeficiency and reactivation of EBV, and migration of lung opacities may be related to the patient's immune status.

In his paper the author has drawn up a certain typology of movements that are associated with human existence. He mentions their different modalities, goals and motives. His intention was to single out those of these movements that are most characteristic of the human mode of being. The movement also includes its trajectory. Therefore, we will also speak of the paths and non-paths along which man, in his individual life or in his history, walks or rides, or -- is carried along. It also attempts to reconcile two seemingly mutually exclusive conceptions of man -- on the one hand, his understanding as homo sessilis and, on the other, man understood as homo migrans. The increasing prevalence of cognitive disorders among the elderly is a significant consequence of the global aging phenomenon. Wandering stands out as the most prominent and challenging symptom in these patients, with potential irreversible consequences such as loss or even death. Thus, harnessing technological advancements to mitigate caregiving burdens and disease-related repercussions becomes paramount. Numerous studies have developed algorithms and smart healthcare and telemedicine systems for wandering detection. Broadly, these algorithms fall into two categories: those estimating path complexity and those relying on historical trajectory data. However, motion signal processing methods are rarely employed in this context. This paper proposes a motion-signal-processing-based algorithm utilizing the wavelet packet transform (WPT) with a fourth-order Coiflet mother wavelet. The algorithm identifies wandering patterns solely based on patients' positional data on the current traversed path and variations in wavelet coefficients within the frequency–time spectrum of motion signals. The model's independence from prior motion behavior data enhances its compatibility with the pronounced instability often seen in these patients. A performance assessment of the proposed algorithm using the Geolife open-source dataset achieved accuracy, precision, specificity, recall, and F-score metrics of 83.06%, 92.62%, 83.06%, 83.06%, and 87.58%, respectively. Timely wandering detection not only prevents irreversible consequences but also serves as a potential indicator of progression to severe Alzheimer's in patients with mild cognitive impairment, enabling timely interventions for preventing disease progression. This paper argues that while regulatory frameworks in aged care authorise restraints to protect vulnerable persons living with dementia from harm, they also serve as normalising practices to control challenging monstrous Others. This argument emerges out of an observed unease in aged care discourse where older people living with dementia are described as 'vulnerable', while dementia behaviours are described as 'challenging'. Using narrative analysis on a case study from the Final Report of the Australian Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (RCAC), this paper investigates how the RCAC (re)produced constructions of persons with dementia as 'vulnerable monsters'. Drawing upon monstrous theory about 'unruly and leaky' bodies, extracts from the case study reveal how the RCAC repeated and reinforced monstrous constructions of dementia. Dementia behaviours, particularly 'wandering', were constructed through a dehumanising crisis frame that produced 'challenging' bodies and legitimised 'last resort' normalising practices, such as physical and chemical restraints. In failing to resist monstrous constructions of dementia behaviours, the RCAC accepted and authorised a regime of scaled responses leading to restrictive practices for control of challenging bodies in aged care. Although dementia care and restrictive practices received substantial attention in the RCAC, this paper reveals a missed opportunity for deeper review of institutionalised use of restraints that has relevance for ongoing reform of Australian aged care following conclusion of the RCAC. This essay combines the notions of creative paratopy and discursive ethos in order to shed light on aspects of the work of Benjamin Fondane, a Jewish writer of Romanian origin who chose French as his language of writing. Le Mal des fantômes, a collection of poems written in his adopted language, integrates the various dimensions of creative paratopy : in addition to the paratopy of identity, which in some cases becomes “maximal”, there is a spatial paratopy, a temporal paratopy and a linguistic paratopy. The analysis focuses on his poem Ulysse, which representatively includes most of his typologies, and shows that this unstable and erratic “localisation” is involved in the emergence of a “physicality” and a “character” which belong to a specific “ethical world” and point to “a dynamic of positioning” which is spread over several planes at the same time.

Drawn with two hands, this article offers a map and modes of cartography carried out with children, which suggest an education (in geography) that takes responsibility. In their wanderings, they tell us and engage with us to express desires - individual and negotiated - for an empty plot of land surrounding the school. Abandonment, the result of the State's negligence and the cunning of a construction company building a shopping center, constantly puts local everyday life in permanent tension. What can we do against gentrification? When they tactically locate bazaar, sea, houses, work, leisure, and school in response, they radiate counter-hegemonic logics, fabulation, and a sense of collectiveness - politically and poetically. They border with us in dialogue about geographical imaginations, drawings, and cartographies in drift: Barbieri (2023), Massey (2007), Deligny (2015), and Oliveira Jr (2012). We have found a way to approach and narrate playfully, in line with childhood, dialoguing with Benjamin (2012) and Agamben (2005). Summoned, the technical knowledge mobilized in university extension enables us to comprehend the trap of capital, already intuited by the community: the construction would be impossible without incorporating the school. One of the most successful and appreciated playwrights in the contemporary Francophone world is José Pliva, a French-language writer of Beninese origin. "Auteur du Tout-monde", as he likes to be known, he writes to express his feelings and his inner vision of the world, and to investigate the evil and the violence that call out to be addressed. His interest centres on human beings and their complexities and sufferings, transcending geographical borders. As we shall see in this contribution, Pliya's characters live from conflict - personal, inner conflict against a backdrop of external, collective conflict (world wars, Rwandan genocide, etc.). Le Complexe de Thénardier and Une famille ordinaire are two of his most representative works in this regard. With Lettres à l'humanité, a voice is given to those who are normally unheard - be they colonised peoples, pieds-noirs, sans papiers or banlieusards - men and women caught between two lands, two continents, who aspire to change their lives and find happiness. This paper elucidates a Daoist perspective of creativity by focusing on novelty and usefulness. Drawing on the thought of Zhuangzi, it is noted that he advocates original and unorthodox views by challenging social norms and traditional practices. He also questions the prevailing notions and assumptions concerning the usefulness and uselessness of things and people. To liberate humans from conventional commitment and judgment, Zhuangzi recommends two Daoist concepts. The first is "fasting of the heart‐mind" (xin zhai) where a person empties oneself of preconceived ideas and practices. The second Daoist notion is "wandering" (you) where one responds to people, things, and situations in an open‐minded, appreciative, playful, and spontaneous manner. There are three major implications arising from a Zhuangzian conception of creativity: it contributes to an existing literature gap on the philosophy of creativity, extends the research on Eastern formulations of creativity that hitherto have centered on Confucianism, and challenges and re‐constructs the prevalent understandings and presuppositions concerning creativity and related terms. Background: This study examines caregivers' use of 'where are you going?' in Mandarin and Taiwanese to address residents' wandering-related actions in routine caregiving interactions. Method: Using multimodal conversation analysis, video recordings of interactions between Taiwanese residents and caregivers from Taiwan and Vietnam are analyzed. Results: 'Where are you going?' accomplishes the following institutional actions: this turn signals residents' actions as problematic; simultaneously, it aims to halt residents' actions, draw residents' attention, and/or hold residents accountable for their actions. Residents respond in one of four ways, suggesting their distinct understandings of the same turn: [+/- halt] and [+/- account]. The caregivers' subsequent actions indicate their institutional orientation as caregivers. In particular, helping the residents to walk or move their bodies relies on resident-caregiver collaboration. Discussion/conclusion: This study demonstrates wandering and its management from an emic (participant-oriented) perspective and presents 'where are you going?' as a practical non-pharmacological intervention. The motif of the Wandering Jew is an archaic motif whose conventional elements can function within widespread narrative contexts. Formally the motif might operate in the same manner as do other motifs: as just another component of the narrative structure. But because of the comprehensive nature of its features, this motif is able to deliver its essential message of human suffering even as it migrates through diverse cultural environments, as the interaction of its axiological elements with their newly acquired social and cultural contexts has the capacity to appear seamless and unlaboured. Salim Kumar’s Malayalam film Karutha Joothan (2017) is a case in point. The work employs this motif remarkably well in what is an uncharted cultural context: the dwindling community of Black Jews in Kerala. Along with articulating the distress of a marginalised community, the film memorialises a significant historical era. This paper examines the ways in which the film’s protagonist comes to represent the prototypical lonely wanderer of the generic myth.

The article examines the development of approaches to the category of sobornost (spiritual community of people), stated in the works of V. Solovyov, in the works of P. Florensky, S. Bulgakov, N. Berdyaev. This essay traces the evolvement of sobornost from abstraction to definition by means of Hegel’s dialectic. The process of dialectic development is projected onto modern life through philosophic polylogue that includes symbolic interpretation of the language of Russian religious philosophy of the 19th–20th centuries. Sobornost is interpreted as a specific ontology of culture enfolding itself in religious, secular, and religious-secular communality. Thus, with Hegel’s triads in mind we can build on the unity and self-identity of sobornost at the level of religious communality. For secular communality with its duality, sobornost is mediated and reversed. Though duality of sobornost is not substantial and it unites general and particular into religious-secular communality as the most concrete form of its actualization. Each communality type means a specific form of presentation of sobornost in language and shows itself in the texts through religious philosophemes (symbols). For example, wandering (S. N. All three symbols of religious and secular communalities have common features: atemporality, eschatologism, the idea of chosenness, mono-ideism, martyrdom and Messianism with different actualization in each of the communalities. The third type of communality combining both religious and secular demonstrates all three symbols of sobornost. Herein these symbols are associated with humility, personal maximalism of actions, religious conscience, historicity, and freedom. In this way an individual is always placed in the dimension of sobornost and cannot be regarded out of it. The establishment of sobornost leads to spiritual totality of the divine-humanity.

The current research aims to examine the psychometric properties of the mental wandering scale on a sample of primary school students (60) students whose ages ranged between 9-10 years, with an arithmetic mean (9.28) and a standard deviation (0.45). Sometimes, plans fail. I had planned to write about how Dionne Brand's A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging spoke to the study of religion in various ways. But after encountering Map's speaker on the ocean with Yemaya, my plans failed, and opened a different way of thinking about religion and its study. In this regard, this essay speaks to religion not as a category of human experience, but instead as a kind of movement that sets our categories in default. Turning to scholars of religion like Charles Long and Black studies scholars like Sarah Jane Cervenak, I eventually suggest that Map offers us wandering as a method for studying religion; instead of coming with our received categories, I suggest, we must instead adopt wandering as a method; instead of starting with traditions, beliefs, theologies and histories, we should instead insist on life--and allow that insistence to guide our study. The woman’s body is a common place in African literature that renews the imaginations and visions of the world in the modern novel. It is revealed in a discourse of a new vision of woman’s commitment that authors develop in their story and which results from contemporary experiences. It is this poetics of feminity that we highlight through the reading of the novels of Tahar B. JELLOUN, Ken BUGUL, Fatou DIOME, Fatou KEÏTA, Mohamed. M. SARR. In this study, we intend to show that beyond the set schemes of body representation, the so radical perception of woman’s sedition in these different novels, meets the outlines of an insubordination of the imaginary. Thus, in our analysis we will point out the strangeness and even the delirium of speeches invested in the texts selected on for this purpose.

This article investigates the opportunities for queer play in Yume Nikki (KIKIYAMA, 2004) by examining the spatial and temporal dimensions of the game’s “Dream World” alongside its narrative. Using surreal visuals and counterintuitive layouts, Yume Nikki’s game maps evoke queer experiences of space, movement, and wandering. In addition, the game encourages wandering through the absence of temporally ordered events and the game’s general lack of interest in timekeeping. The game’s construction promotes a play style that highlights aspects of queer experiences including disorientation and failure. The player’s aimless roaming through time and space are not a failure to master the game, but another way Yume Nikki celebrates queerness and rejects the values of mainstream success, fun, and play.

Purpose: To review evidence around design interventions that influence exiting attempts in dementia care units, informing architectural and clinical practice. Background: Built environment design is recognized as important in the care and management of responsive behaviors for those living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in secured dementia care units (e.g., exiting attempts, agitation). The repetitious behavior of "walking with purpose" (previously termed wandering) in those with dementia has influenced safety-related architectural design components of dementia care units that decrease exiting attempts. Empirical literature addressing design interventions to prevent exiting for those with dementia is lacking and outdated. Methods: We sought to describe known design techniques through a topical analysis of experimental studies. A thorough search for empirical studies that assessed interior design interventions at exit doors within dementia care units was undertaken. The review included an extensive search for existing literature and a screening of each study identified for its relevance, quality, and applicability. Results: The experimental studies included in the review collectively assessed five interior design interventions at egress doorways: implementing horizontal and vertical floor grid patterns, mirrors, murals, conditioning responses to color cues, and camouflaging door hardware or vision panels. Why empirical studies have not continued more recently as built environment trends have shifted toward promoting meaningful and purposeful movement through design are considered. Advances in our understanding around the pathophysiology of dementia which might affect future design interventions related to egress are also identified. Conclusion: The built environment is an important part of dementia care, and further prospective research is needed on the role of design interventions in the context of exiting attempts within secured units and subsequent behavior outcomes. This study examined the effect of a preference-based music intervention on agitated behavior measured with Inter-Response Time (IRT) and duration measures in intervention phases. In addition, we collected answers on the Brief Agitation Rating Scale (BARS) questionnaire. We preceded the agitated behavior by presenting music based on the occurrence of the behavior and evaluated the intervention effect with an ABABABA withdrawal design. Results showed higher IRT measures between agitated behavior in intervention phases and baseline-consistent measures in withdrawal phases. Our conclusion is that this variant of the NCR-procedure could be considered as an alternative by therapists working with related behaviors in nursing homes. Este trabajo se propone analizar el rol de la errancia en relación con la posmemoria en Duelo (2017), novela del escritor guatemalteco Eduardo Halfon. Entendida como una forma de movilidad sin dirección, la errancia es una instancia indagatoria sobre la memoria del trauma del Holocausto que guía la construcción de los relatos de infancia, en especial sobre la familia judía polaca del protagonista. A lo largo de una serie de viajes, y en diálogo con el dark tourism, Duelo desarrolla una narración descentrada, que se vale del poder inventivo de la posmemoria para entrelazar variaciones de una historia en torno al secreto del pasado familiar. Así, el artículo postula que la errancia es una estrategia para capturar los fantasmas de una memoria mediada por los relatos de infancia y donde lo espectral refiere a las variadas direcciones y fugas que asume el relato del trauma. De este modo, la errancia es una forma de cartografiar afectivamente el duelo familiar para darle una dimensión colectiva. This paper aims to analyze the role of wandering in relation to postmemory in Duelo (2017), a novel by the Guatemalan writer Eduardo Halfon. Defined as mobility without direction, wandering is an instance of inquiry into the memory of the trauma of the Holocaust that guides the construction of childhood stories, especially about the protagonist's Polish-Jewish family. Throughout a series of trips, and in dialogue with dark tourism, Duelo develops an off-center narration that uses the inventive power of postmemory to weave variations of a story around the secret of the family past. Thus, the article posits that wandering is a strategy to capture the ghosts of a memory mediated by childhood stories and where the spectral refers to the various directions and escape mechanisms of the trauma story. Wandering behavior in nursing home (NH) residents could increase risk of infection. The objective of this study was to assess the association of wandering behavior with SARS-CoV-2 infection in Veterans Affairs (VA) Community Living Center (CLC) residents. Retrospective cohort study. Veterans residing in 133 VA CLCs. We included residents with SARS-CoV-2 test from March 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020 from VA electronic medical records. We identified CLC residents with wandering on Minimum Data Set 3.0 assessments and compared them with residents without wandering. The outcome was SARS-CoV-2 infection, as tested for surveillance testing, in those with and without wandering. Generalized linear model with Poisson link adjusted for relevant covariates was used. Residents (n = 9995) were included in the analytic cohort mean, (SD) age 73.4 (10.7); 388 (3.9%) women. The mean (SD) activities of daily living score in the overall cohort was 13.6 (8.25). Wandering was noted in 379 (3.8%) (n = 379) of the cohort. The exposure groups differed in prior dementia (92.6% vs 62.1%, standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.8) and psychoses (41.4% vs 28.1%, SMD = 0.3). Overall, 12.5% (n = 1248) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and more residents among the wandering group were SARS-CoV-2 positive as compared with those in the group without wandering (19% [n = 72] vs 12.2% [n = 1176], SMD = 0.19). Adjusting for covariates, residents with wandering had 34% higher relative risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection (adjusted relative risk, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.04–1.69). CLC residents with wandering had a higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. This may inform implementation of infection control and isolation policies as NHs attempt to balance ethical concepts of resident autonomy, proportionality, equity, and utilitarianism. The increasing prevalence of cognitive disorders among the elderly is a significant consequence of the global aging phenomenon. Wandering stands out as the most prominent and challenging symptom in these patients, with potential irreversible consequences such as loss or even death. Thus, harnessing technological advancements to mitigate caregiving burdens and disease-related repercussions becomes paramount. Numerous studies have developed algorithms and smart healthcare and telemedicine systems for wandering detection. Broadly, these algorithms fall into two categories: those estimating path complexity and those relying on historical trajectory data. However, motion signal processing methods are rarely employed in this context. This paper proposes a motion-signal-processing-based algorithm utilizing the wavelet packet transform (WPT) with a fourth-order Coiflet mother wavelet. The algorithm identifies wandering patterns solely based on patients’ positional data on the current traversed path and variations in wavelet coefficients within the frequency–time spectrum of motion signals. The model’s independence from prior motion behavior data enhances its compatibility with the pronounced instability often seen in these patients. A performance assessment of the proposed algorithm using the Geolife open-source dataset achieved accuracy, precision, specificity, recall, and F-score metrics of 83.06%, 92.62%, 83.06%, 83.06%, and 87.58%, respectively. Timely wandering detection not only prevents irreversible consequences but also serves as a potential indicator of progression to severe Alzheimer’s in patients with mild cognitive impairment, enabling timely interventions for preventing disease progression. This underscores the importance of advancing wandering detection algorithms.
