1. Evaluation of the IDEA Public Schools Education Innovation and Research Grant [U411C190117]: Impact of IDEA Public Schools' Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles Curriculum Study

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the implementation and impact of a computer science-integrated math curriculum, the Beauty and Joy of Computing (BJC), combined with curriculum and professional development support for Computer Science Principles (CSP) teachers, funded by an Innovation and Research (EIR) grant. Methods: The study used a randomized controlled trial design where schools from the IDEA public schools were randomly assigned to use the BJC curriculum (treatment) or, the business as usual, Code.org (comparison). The study compared AP CSP test scores and student attitudes towards CSP between students in the treatment and comparison group. Results: The study found that the average AP CSP scores were low in both the treatment and comparison groups. About one-quarter of test takers (25%) earned a passing score of 3 or higher (compared to national average of 64%). The results of the analyses show that there were no statistically significant differences between the BJC and comparison groups. The study also showed that students in the treatment group responded more favorably on all student engagement in CSP constructs than comparison students, the size of the differences between the treatment and comparison condition were small and none were statistically significant. Implications: Since the evaluation examined student outcomes in the same year that the new curriculum was implemented for this first time, finding significant impacts on student outcomes may require more time. Nevertheless, the results of this evaluation inform IDEA staff, practitioners, and other researchers on the intervention's effectiveness, and they provide insights on how to improve curriculum use to further improve student outcomes.

2. Evaluation of the IDEA Public Schools Education Innovation and Research Grant [U411C190117]: Math Curriculum Redesign

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the implementation and impact of the IDEA Public Schools' Mathematics Curriculum Redesign (MCR) effort, funded by an Innovation and Research (EIR) grant. Methods: The study used a quasi-experimental matching design to examine the effect of MCR on student achievement outcomes. The study compared outcomes between the two cohorts of students at IDEA Public Schools that piloted the MCR and matched cohorts of students in IDEA schools that had delayed implementation of MCR. Results:?The study found statistically significant differences in IDEA Geometry test scores (ES = 0.39) between treatment and comparison group students in Grade 9 and on AP Calculus exam scores between treatment and comparison group students in Grade 12 (ES = 0.57). The study also found that the MCR program met the evaluation threshold for fidelity of implementation for the two out of three key program components (development of redesigned math curriculum and teacher use of math curriculum) in some years. The program did not meet the evaluation threshold for fidelity of implementation for the third key program components (teacher training and professional development to use redesigned math curriculum) in any of the years. Implications:?Because curriculum development and implementation are ongoing and iterative, realizing all of the benefits is not immediate and may take more time to achieve desired results. Continuous improvement of the curriculum and consistent supports to teachers will contribute to continued benefits for teachers and students while moving toward reaching anticipated student outcomes.

3. Exploring the Relationship between Test-Optional Admissions and Selectivity and Enrollment Outcomes during the Pandemic. EdWorkingPaper No. 24-982

Abstract

Most selective colleges implemented test-optional admissions during the pandemic, making college entrance exam scores optional for applicants. We draw on descriptive, two-way fixed effects, and event study methods to examine variation in test-optional implementation during the pandemic and how implementation relates to selectivity and enrollment. For "test-optional" colleges during the pandemic, we found substantial variation in policy type (e.g., test optional, test free) and whether the policy extended to all applicants and scholarship consideration. Findings suggest test-optional implementation related to increases in Black student enrollment, mostly at moderately selective colleges and when policies extended to all applicants and scholarships. At highly selective colleges, findings suggest test-optional implementation related to an increase in applications but not consistent gains in enrollment.

Abstract

The remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), primarily driven by deep neural networks, are facing challenges surrounding unsustainable computational trajectories, limited robustness, and a lack of explainability. To develop next-generation cognitive AI systems, neuro-symbolic AI emerges as a promising paradigm, fusing neural and symbolic approaches to enhance interpretability, robustness, and trustworthiness, while facilitating learning from much less data. Recent neuro-symbolic systems have demonstrated great potential in collaborative human-AI scenarios with reasoning and cognitive capabilities. In this paper, we aim to understand the workload characteristics and potential architectures for neuro-symbolic AI. We first systematically categorize neuro-symbolic AI algorithms, and then experimentally evaluate and analyze them in terms of runtime, memory, computational operators, sparsity, and system characteristics on CPUs, GPUs, and edge SoCs. Our studies reveal that neuro-symbolic models suffer from inefficiencies on off-the-shelf hardware, due to the memory-bound nature of vector-symbolic and logical operations, complex flow control, data dependencies, sparsity variations, and limited scalability. Based on profiling insights, we suggest cross-layer optimization solutions and present a hardware acceleration case study for vector-symbolic architecture to improve the performance, efficiency, and scalability of neuro-symbolic computing. 5. Exploring the Key Features of Repeating Fast Radio Bursts with Machine Learning

Abstract

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are enigmatic high-energy events with unknown origins, which are observationally divided into two categories, i.e., repeaters and non-repeaters. However, there are potentially a number of non-repeaters that may be misclassified, as repeating bursts are missed due to the limited sensitivity and observation periods, thus misleading the investigation of their physical properties. In this work, we propose a repeater identification method based on the t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) algorithm and apply the classification to the first Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) catalog. We find that the spectral morphology parameters, specifically spectral running ($r$), represent the key features for identifying repeaters from the non-repeaters. Also, the results suggest that repeaters are more biased towards narrowband emission, whereas non-repeaters are inclined toward broadband emission. We provide a list of 163 repeater candidates, with $5$ of which are confirmed with an updated repeater catalog from CHIME/FRB. Our findings help to the understanding of the various properties underlying repeaters and non-repeaters, as well as guidelines for future FRB detection and categorization., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

6. Teachers' Perspectives on Applying Online Learning Tools through Learning Management System: The Need for an Online Malay Language Teaching Module

Abstract

This study examines Malay language teachers' perceptions of using Google tools in their online teaching in primary schools. It uses a basic interpretative research methodology to investigate the perspectives of six primary school Malay language teachers from Terengganu, Malaysia. Interviews with semi-structured questions were used to collect data and analyzed thematically. All the themes and sub-themes were organized using NVivo 12 software. The data show that the predominant topic in teachers' thoughts on the importance of Google tools was the reasons for their absence of use. There were two essential sub-themes: a lack of skills and proficiency and a need for more awareness of how to use Google tools. Furthermore, this study highlighted personal support of module development as a secondary theme which included two sub-themes: agreement with the need for modules and the importance of providing them. This study also underlined the importance of module preparation which was reinforced by two sub-themes: facilitating teachers' implementation of online teaching and serving as a significant reference for teachers. This study shows that effective online education requires competency, skills and knowledge of Google Tools. It suggests creating a Google Tools module to guide and serve as a resource for Malay language teachers.

7. Fostering Creative Thinking Skills through Digital Storytelling

Abstract

Mastering creative thinking skills (CTS) is crucial for enhancing students' science conceptual understanding. However, conventional teaching prioritizes linear thinking over the three sub-CTS essential to science learning: associative, visual, and divergent thinking. Weaknesses in these three sub-CTS cause students to have misconceptions, difficulty in creating mental images, and an inability to generate ideas on abstract scientific concepts. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Digital Storytelling Science Creative (DSSC) module in enhancing these three sub-CTS, based on the topic of acids and bases. The ASSURE instructional design model guided the DSSC module design and development process. This quasi-experimental design study involved 63 eighth-grade students. Analysis of two-way MANCOVA using the data collected through the administered Creative Thinking Skills Test revealed that the DSSC module group performed significantly better than the control group in divergent thinking. However, the DSSC module did not significantly affect students' associative and visual thinking or gender.

8. International Faculty Members' Intention to Leave South Korea: Do Acculturation and Cultural Advantage Matter?

Abstract

The percentage of international faculty members at Korean universities peaked in 2013 and has been decreasing since, suggesting that Korean universities have a problem with international faculty member retention. This study investigates whether international faculty members' intention to leave is associated with their degree of acculturation. Results are based on analyses of data from 325 international faculty members with doctorates working at Korean universities nationwide. Regression analyses reveal that acculturation, work-related conditions (salary, workload, workplace climate) and mobility-related motivational factors (job market in home country, interest in Korea) explain international faculty members' intention to leave. A 'cultural advantage' (ethnically Korean or living with a Korean spouse) is not a significant predictor of intention to leave. Suggestions to support international faculty members, and to help bring about synergistic organizational change are ventured in the hopes of bolstering retention at Korean universities going forward.

Abstract

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (∼1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. The EAST operational regime of high βP has been significantly extended (H98y2 > 1.3, βP ∼ 4.0, βN ∼ 2.4 and ne/nGW ∼ 1.0) using RF and neutral beam injection (NBI). The full edge localized mode suppression using the n = 4 resonant magnetic perturbations has been achieved in ITER-like standard type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas with q95 ≈ 3.1 on EAST, extrapolating favorably to the ITER baseline scenario. The sustained large ELM control and stable partial detachment have been achieved with Ne seeding. The underlying physics of plasma-beta effect for error field penetration, where toroidal effect dominates, is disclosed by comparing the results in cylindrical theory and MARS-Q simulation in EAST. Abstract

The dissociation of quarkonium states with different binding energies produced in heavy-ion collisions is a powerful probe for investigating the formation and properties of the quark-gluon plasma. The ratio of production cross-sections of $\psi(2S)$ and $J/\psi$ mesons times the ratio of their branching fractions into the dimuon final state is measured as a function of centrality using data collected by the LHCb detector in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. 11. Ising domain wall networks from intertwined charge density waves in single-layer TiSe2

Abstract

When the period of an incommensurate charge density wave (ICDW) approaches an integer multiple of a lattice vector, the energy gain obtained from locking the period to the lattice can lead to a fascinating transition into a commensurate state. This transition actually occurs through an intermediate near-commensurate (NC) phase, with locally commensurate regions separated by an ordered array of phase slips of a complex CDW order parameter. TiSe2 is a paradigmatic CDW system where incommensuration is believed to be induced by carrier doping, yet its putative NC state has never been imaged or its nature established. Here we report the observation of a striking NC state in ultraclean, slightly doped monolayers of TiSe2, displaying an intricate network of coherent, unidirectional CDW domain walls over hundreds of nanometers. Detailed analysis reveals these are not phase slips of a complex CDW, but rather sign-changing Ising-type domain walls of two coupled real CDWs of previously known symmetry, consistent with the period doubling nature of the parent commensurate state. In addition, we observe an unexpected nematic modulation at the original lattice Bragg peaks which couples to the CDW order parameters. A Ginzburg-Landau analysis naturally explains the couplings and relative modulations of all order parameters, unveiling TiSe2 as a rare example of an NC-CDW of two intertwined real modulations and emergent nematicity.

Abstract

With the versatile manipulation capability, programmable metasurfaces are rapidly advancing in their intelligence, integration, and commercialization levels. However, as the programmable metasurfaces scale up, their control configuration becomes increasingly complicated, posing significant challenges and limitations. Here, we propose a multiple-partition cross-modulation (MPCM) programmable metasurface to enhance the wireless communication coverage with low hardware complexity. We firstly propose an innovative encoding scheme to multiply the control voltage vectors of row-column crossing, achieving high beamforming precision in free space while maintaining low control hardware complexity and reducing memory requirements for coding sequences. We then design and fabricate an MPCM programmable metasurface to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed encoding scheme. The simulated and experimental results show good agreements with the theoretically calculated outcomes in beam scanning across the E and H planes and in free-space beam pointing. The MPCM programmable metasurface offers strong flexibility and low complexity by allowing various numbers and combinations of partition items in modulation methods, catering to diverse precision demands in various scenarios. We demonstrate the performance of MPCM programmable metasurface in a realistic indoor setting, where the transmissions of videos to specific receiver positions are successfully achieved, surpassing the capabilities of traditional programmable metasurfaces. We believe that the proposed programmable metasurface has great potentials in significantly empowering the wireless communications while addressing the challenges associated with the programmable metasurface's design and implementation.

13. On-chip Moir\'e Optical Skyrmion Clusters with Nanoscale Dynamics

Abstract

Skyrmions are topological defects belonging to nontrivial homotopy classes in particle theory, and are recognized as a suitable unit in the high-density, low-dissipation microelectronic devices in condensed matter physics. Their remarkably stable topology has been observed in electromagnetic waves recently. For the evanescent fields near a surface, this has been realized so far only for elementary optical skyrmions, with a fixed skyrmion number. Here we introduce the concept of moir\'e optical skyrmion clusters-multiskyrmions are nested to form a large optical skyrmion cluster-crystallized or quasi-crystallized as a consequence of the twisted nanostructures. The rapid inverting of optical skyrmion number is achieved in the imperfectly aligned composite nanostructures. This moir\'e optical skyrmion interaction mechanism is described by a lattice model. Further, the nucleation and collapse of optical skyrmion are studied, where their nanoscale dynamics are revealed with a tiny change of the twist angle. The sudden reversal of the on-chip skyrmion can serve as a precise beacon of the relative alignment deviation between twisted composite nanostructures.

14. UKTF: Unified Knowledge Tracing Framework for Subjective and Objective Assessments

Abstract

With the continuous deepening and development of the concept of smart education, learners' comprehensive development and individual needs have received increasing attention. However, traditional educational evaluation systems tend to assess learners' cognitive abilities solely through general test scores, failing to comprehensively consider their actual knowledge states. Knowledge tracing technology can establish knowledge state models based on learners' historical answer data, thereby enabling personalized assessment of learners. Nevertheless, current classical knowledge tracing models are primarily suited for objective test questions, while subjective test questions still confront challenges such as complex data representation, imperfect modeling, and the intricate and dynamic nature of knowledge states. Drawing on the application of knowledge tracing technology in education, this study aims to fully utilize examination data and proposes a unified knowledge tracing model that integrates both objective and subjective test questions. Recognizing the differences in question structure, assessment methods, and data characteristics between objective and subjective test questions, the model employs the same backbone network for training both types of questions. Simultaneously, it achieves knowledge tracing for subjective test questions by universally modifying the training approach of the baseline model, adding branch networks, and optimizing the method of question encoding. 15. Balancing Pipeline Parallelism with Vocabulary Parallelism

Abstract

Pipeline parallelism is widely used to scale the training of transformer-based large language models, various works have been done to improve its throughput and memory footprint. In this paper, we address a frequently overlooked issue: the vocabulary layers can cause imbalanced computation and memory usage across pipeline stages, worsening pipeline bubbles and the memory bottleneck. To tackle this, we partition the vocabulary layers evenly across pipeline devices and group the computation into pipeline passes. To reduce the activation memory overhead, we propose several algorithms to reduce communication barriers within vocabulary layers. Additionally, we utilize a generalizable method to integrate Vocabulary Parallelism with existing pipeline schedules. By combining these techniques, our methods effectively balance the computation and parameter memory, with only a small constant activation memory overhead. Notably, when combined with activation memory-balanced schedules like V-Half, our approach achieves perfect balance in both memory and computation. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our method achieves computation and memory balance regardless of the vocabulary size, resulting in a 5% to 51% improvement in throughput compared to naive approaches, meanwhile significantly reducing peak memory usage especially for large vocabulary scenarios. 16. Noisy Zero-Shot Coordination: Breaking The Common Knowledge Assumption In Zero-Shot Coordination Games

Abstract

Zero-shot coordination (ZSC) is a popular setting for studying the ability of reinforcement learning (RL) agents to coordinate with novel partners. Prior ZSC formulations assume the $\textit{problem setting}$ is common knowledge: each agent knows the underlying Dec-POMDP, knows others have this knowledge, and so on ad infinitum. However, this assumption rarely holds in complex real-world settings, which are often difficult to fully and correctly specify. Hence, in settings where this common knowledge assumption is invalid, agents trained using ZSC methods may not be able to coordinate well. To address this limitation, we formulate the $\textit{noisy zero-shot coordination}$ (NZSC) problem. In NZSC, agents observe different noisy versions of the ground truth Dec-POMDP, which are assumed to be distributed according to a fixed noise model. Only the distribution of ground truth Dec-POMDPs and the noise model are common knowledge. We show that a NZSC problem can be reduced to a ZSC problem by designing a meta-Dec-POMDP with an augmented state space consisting of all the ground-truth Dec-POMDPs. For solving NZSC problems, we propose a simple and flexible meta-learning method called NZSC training, in which the agents are trained across a distribution of coordination problems - which they only get to observe noisy versions of. We show that with NZSC training, RL agents can be trained to coordinate well with novel partners even when the (exact) problem setting of the coordination is not common knowledge.

Abstract

This study explores a pick-and-toss (PT) as an alternative to pick-and-place (PP), allowing a robot to extend its range and improve task efficiency. Although PT boosts efficiency in object arrangement, the placement environment critically affects the success of tossing. To achieve accurate and efficient object arrangement, we suggest choosing between PP and PT based on task difficulty estimated from the placement environment. Our method simultaneously learns the tossing motion through self-supervised learning and the task determination policy via brute-force search. Abstract

The rapid development of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has expanded their capabilities from image comprehension to video understanding. However, most of these MLLMs focus primarily on offline video comprehension, necessitating extensive processing of all video frames before any queries can be made. This presents a significant gap compared to the human ability to watch, listen, think, and respond to streaming inputs in real time, highlighting the limitations of current MLLMs. In this paper, we introduce StreamingBench, the first comprehensive benchmark designed to evaluate the streaming video understanding capabilities of MLLMs. StreamingBench assesses three core aspects of streaming video understanding: (1) real-time visual understanding, (2) omni-source understanding, and (3) contextual understanding. The benchmark consists of 18 tasks, featuring 900 videos and 4,500 human-curated QA pairs. Each video features five questions presented at different time points to simulate a continuous streaming scenario. We conduct experiments on StreamingBench with 13 open-source and proprietary MLLMs and find that even the most advanced proprietary MLLMs like Gemini 1.5 Pro and GPT-4o perform significantly below human-level streaming video understanding capabilities. We hope our work can facilitate further advancements for MLLMs, empowering them to approach human-level video comprehension and interaction in more realistic scenarios.

Abstract

An amplitude analysis of the $D_{s1}(2460)^+\to D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ transition is performed simultaneously in $B^{0}\to D^{-}D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, $B^{+}\to{\bar{D}}^{0} D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, and $B^{0}\to D^{*-}D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays. The study is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7,8,$ and $13\,$TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of $9\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$. A clear double-peak structure is observed in the $m(\pi^{+}\pi^{-})$ spectrum of the $D_{s1}(2460)^{+}\to D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decay. The data can be described either with a model including $f_0(500)$, $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ resonances, in which the contributions of $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ are unexpectedly large, or with a model including $f_0(500)$, a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state $T_{c\bar{s}}^{++}$ and its isospin partner $T_{c\bar{s}}^{0}$. If the former is considered implausible, the $T_{c\bar{s}}$ states are observed with high significance, and the data are consistent with isospin symmetry. When imposing isospin constraints between the two $T_{c\bar{s}}$ states, their mass and width are determined to be $2327\pm13\pm13\,$MeV and $96\pm16\,^{+170}_{-23}\,$MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Abstract

The detection of satellite thermal emission at millimeter wavelengths is presented using data from the 3rd-Generation receiver on the South Pole Telescope (SPT-3G). This represents the first reported detection of thermal emission from artificial satellites at millimeter wavelengths. Satellite thermal emission is shown to be detectable at high signal-to-noise on timescales as short as a few tens of milliseconds. An algorithm for downloading orbital information and tracking known satellites given observer constraints and time-ordered observatory pointing is described. Consequences for cosmological surveys and short-duration transient searches are discussed, revealing that the integrated thermal emission from all large satellites does not contribute significantly to the SPT-3G survey intensity map. Measured satellite positions are found to be discrepant from their two-line element (TLE) derived ephemerides up to several arcminutes which may present a difficulty in cross-checking or masking satellites from short-duration transient searches.

Abstract

Converting webpage design into functional UI code is a critical step for building websites, which can be labor-intensive and time-consuming. To automate this design-to-code transformation process, various automated methods using learning-based networks and multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) have been proposed. However, these studies were merely evaluated on a narrow range of static web pages and ignored dynamic interaction elements, making them less practical for real-world website deployment. To fill in the blank, we present the first systematic investigation of MLLMs in generating interactive webpages. Specifically, we first formulate the Interaction-to-Code task and build the Interaction2Code benchmark that contains 97 unique web pages and 213 distinct interactions, spanning 15 webpage types and 30 interaction categories. We then conduct comprehensive experiments on three state-of-the-art (SOTA) MLLMs using both automatic metrics and human evaluations, thereby summarizing six findings accordingly. Our experimental results highlight the limitations of MLLMs in generating fine-grained interactive features and managing interactions with complex transformations and subtle visual modifications. We further analyze failure cases and their underlying causes, identifying 10 common failure types and assessing their severity. Additionally, our findings reveal three critical influencing factors, i.e., prompts, visual saliency, and textual descriptions, that can enhance the interaction generation performance of MLLMs. Based on these findings, we elicit implications for researchers and developers, providing a foundation for future advancements in this field. 22. Electron dynamics and particle transport in capacitively coupled Ar/O2 discharges driven by sawtooth up voltage waveforms

Abstract

One dimensional fluid/electron Monte Carlo simulations of capacitively coupled Ar/O2 discharges driven by sawtooth up voltage waveforms are performed as a function of the number of consecutive harmonics driving frequencies of 13.56 MHz, N (1-3), pressure (200-500 mTorr) and gas mixture (10-90 % admixture of O2 to Ar). The effects of these external parameters on the electron dynamics, and the transport of ions and neutrals are revealed at constant peak-to-peak driving voltage. The electronegativity is found to decline as the number of consecutive harmonics increases and the DC self-bias voltage decreases. Increasing the pressure also leads to a decrease in electronegativity. The combination of a decrease in the mean free path of electrons and the presence of the Electrical Asymmetry Effect (EAE) result in different spatio-temporal distributions of the ionization rate, which lead to a reduction in the amplitude of the DC self-bias at higher pressure. As the admixture of electronegative O2 increases, the electronegativity is enhanced, and the discharge mode changes from an {\alpha}-Drift Ambipolar (DA) hybrid to DA mode. This work focuses on linking these fundamental changes of the plasma physics induced by changing external parameters to process relevant charged particle and neutral fluxes to the electrodes. Particular attention is paid to O(1D) flux, because it is a precursor of deposition. In discharges driven by sawtooth up voltage waveforms, placing the substrate on the grounded electrode and increasing the number of consecutive harmonics, N, can facilitate the deposition process, since the O(1D) flux to the substrate is higher in these scenarios. Abstract

As the development and application of Large Language Models (LLMs) continue to advance rapidly, enhancing their trustworthiness and aligning them with human preferences has become a critical area of research. Traditional methods rely heavily on extensive data for Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), but representation engineering offers a new, training-free approach. This technique leverages semantic features to control the representation of LLM's intermediate hidden states, enabling the model to meet specific requirements such as increased honesty or heightened safety awareness. However, a significant challenge arises when attempting to fulfill multiple requirements simultaneously. It proves difficult to encode various semantic contents, like honesty and safety, into a singular semantic feature, restricting its practicality. In this work, we address this issue through ``Sparse Activation Control''. By delving into the intrinsic mechanisms of LLMs, we manage to identify and pinpoint components that are closely related to specific tasks within the model, i.e., attention heads. These heads display sparse characteristics that allow for near-independent control over different tasks. Our experiments, conducted on the open-source Llama series models, have yielded encouraging results. The models were able to align with human preferences on issues of safety, factuality, and bias concurrently.

Abstract

The exponential growth in wireless data traffic, driven by the proliferation of mobile devices and smart applications, poses significant challenges for modern communication systems. Ensuring the secure and reliable transmission of multimodal semantic information is increasingly critical, particularly for tasks like Audio-Visual Event (AVE) localization. This letter introduces MMTrustSC, a novel framework designed to address these challenges by enhancing the security and reliability of multimodal communication. MMTrustSC incorporates advanced semantic encoding techniques to safeguard data integrity and privacy. It features a two-level coding scheme that combines error-correcting codes with conventional encoders to improve the accuracy and reliability of multimodal data transmission. Additionally, MMTrustSC employs hybrid encryption, integrating both asymmetric and symmetric encryption methods, to secure semantic information and ensure its confidentiality and integrity across potentially hostile networks. Simulation results validate MMTrustSC's effectiveness, demonstrating substantial improvements in data transmission accuracy and reliability for AVE localization tasks. This framework represents a significant advancement in managing intermodal information complementarity and mitigating physical noise, thus enhancing overall system performance.

Abstract

Deploying Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) on resource-constrained devices necessitates efficient management of computational resources, often via distributed systems susceptible to latency from straggler nodes. This paper introduces the Flexible Coded Distributed Convolution Computing (FCDCC) framework to enhance fault tolerance and numerical stability in distributed CNNs. We extend Coded Distributed Computing (CDC) with Circulant and Rotation Matrix Embedding (CRME) which was originally proposed for matrix multiplication to high-dimensional tensor convolution. For the proposed scheme, referred to as Numerically Stable Coded Tensor Convolution (NSCTC) scheme, we also propose two new coded partitioning schemes: Adaptive-Padding Coded Partitioning (APCP) for input tensor and Kernel-Channel Coded Partitioning (KCCP) for filter tensor. These strategies enable linear decomposition of tensor convolutions and encoding them into CDC sub-tasks, combining model parallelism with coded redundancy for robust and efficient execution. Theoretical analysis identifies an optimal trade-off between communication and storage costs. 26. $B^4$: A Black-Box Scrubbing Attack on LLM Watermarks

Watermarking has emerged as a prominent technique for LLM-generated content detection by embedding imperceptible patterns. Despite supreme performance, its robustness against adversarial attacks remains underexplored. Previous work typically considers a grey-box attack setting, where the specific type of watermark is already known. Some even necessitates knowledge about hyperparameters of the watermarking method. Such prerequisites are unattainable in real-world scenarios. Targeting at a more realistic black-box threat model with fewer assumptions, we here propose $B^4$, a black-box scrubbing attack on watermarks. Specifically, we formulate the watermark scrubbing attack as a constrained optimization problem by capturing its objectives with two distributions, a Watermark Distribution and a Fidelity Distribution. This optimization problem can be approximately solved using two proxy distributions. Experimental results across 12 different settings demonstrate the superior performance of $B^4$ compared with other baselines.

27. Characterizing extremal dependence on a hyperplane

Abstract

Quantifying the risks of extreme scenarios requires understanding the tail behaviours of variables of interest. While the tails of individual variables can be characterized parametrically, the extremal dependence across variables can be complex and its modeling remains one of the core problems in extreme value analysis. Notably, existing measures for extremal dependence, e.g., spectral measures and spectral random vectors, reside on nonlinear supports, such that statistical models and methods designed for linear vector spaces cannot be readily applied. In this paper, we show that the extremal dependence of $d$ asymptotically dependent variables can be characterized by a class of random vectors residing on a $(d-1)$-dimensional hyperplane. This translates the analyses on multivariate extremes to that on a linear vector space, opening up the potentials for the application of existing statistical techniques, particularly in statistical learning and dimension reduction. As an example, we show that a lower-dimensional approximation of multivariate extremes can be achieved through principal component analysis on the hyperplane. Additionally, through this framework, the widely used H\"usler-Reiss family for modelling extremes is characterized by the Gaussian family residing on the hyperplane, thereby justifying its status as the Gaussian counterpart for extremes.

Abstract

Imitation learning from human demonstrations is an effective means to teach robots manipulation skills. But data acquisition is a major bottleneck in applying this paradigm more broadly, due to the amount of cost and human effort involved. There has been significant interest in imitation learning for bimanual dexterous robots, like humanoids. Unfortunately, data collection is even more challenging here due to the challenges of simultaneously controlling multiple arms and multi-fingered hands. Automated data generation in simulation is a compelling, scalable alternative to fuel this need for data. To this end, we introduce DexMimicGen, a large-scale automated data generation system that synthesizes trajectories from a handful of human demonstrations for humanoid robots with dexterous hands. We present a collection of simulation environments in the setting of bimanual dexterous manipulation, spanning a range of manipulation behaviors and different requirements for coordination among the two arms. We generate 21K demos across these tasks from just 60 source human demos and study the effect of several data generation and policy learning decisions on agent performance. Finally, we present a real-to-sim-to-real pipeline and deploy it on a real-world humanoid can sorting task. 29. Localization, balance and affinity: a stronger multifaceted collaborative salient object detector in remote sensing images

Abstract

Despite significant advancements in salient object detection(SOD) in optical remote sensing images(ORSI), challenges persist due to the intricate edge structures of ORSIs and the complexity of their contextual relationships. Current deep learning approaches encounter difficulties in accurately identifying boundary features and lack efficiency in collaboratively modeling the foreground and background by leveraging contextual features. To address these challenges, we propose a stronger multifaceted collaborative salient object detector in ORSIs, termed LBA-MCNet, which incorporates aspects of localization, balance, and affinity. The network focuses on accurately locating targets, balancing detailed features, and modeling image-level global context information. Specifically, we design the Edge Feature Adaptive Balancing and Adjusting(EFABA) module for precise edge localization, using edge features to guide attention to boundaries and preserve spatial details. Moreover, we design the Global Distributed Affinity Learning(GDAL) module to model global context. It captures global context by generating an affinity map from the encoders final layer, ensuring effective modeling of global patterns. Additionally, deep supervision during deconvolution further enhances feature representation. Finally, we compared with 28 state of the art approaches on three publicly available datasets. The results clearly demonstrate the superiority of our method.

30. GaussianMarker: Uncertainty-Aware Copyright Protection of 3D Gaussian Splatting

Abstract

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has become a crucial method for acquiring 3D assets. To protect the copyright of these assets, digital watermarking techniques can be applied to embed ownership information discreetly within 3DGS models. However, existing watermarking methods for meshes, point clouds, and implicit radiance fields cannot be directly applied to 3DGS models, as 3DGS models use explicit 3D Gaussians with distinct structures and do not rely on neural networks. Naively embedding the watermark on a pre-trained 3DGS can cause obvious distortion in rendered images. In our work, we propose an uncertainty-based method that constrains the perturbation of model parameters to achieve invisible watermarking for 3DGS. At the message decoding stage, the copyright messages can be reliably extracted from both 3D Gaussians and 2D rendered images even under various forms of 3D and 2D distortions. We conduct extensive experiments on the Blender, LLFF and MipNeRF-360 datasets to validate the effectiveness of our proposed method, demonstrating state-of-the-art performance on both message decoding accuracy and view synthesis quality.

Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD), a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, is commonly diagnosed using functional medical imaging techniques such as single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). In this study, we utilized two SPECT data sets (n = 634 and n = 202) from different hospitals to develop a model capable of accurately predicting PD stages, a multiclass classification task. We used the entire three-dimensional (3D) brain images as input and experimented with various model architectures. Initially, we treated the 3D images as sequences of two-dimensional (2D) slices and fed them sequentially into 2D convolutional neural network (CNN) models pretrained on ImageNet, averaging the outputs to obtain the final predicted stage. We also applied 3D CNN models pretrained on Kinetics-400. Additionally, we incorporated an attention mechanism to account for the varying importance of different slices in the prediction process. To further enhance model efficacy and robustness, we simultaneously trained the two data sets using weight sharing, a technique known as cotraining. Our results demonstrated that 2D models pretrained on ImageNet outperformed 3D models pretrained on Kinetics-400, and models utilizing the attention mechanism outperformed both 2D and 3D models. 32. On Positional Bias of Faithfulness for Long-form Summarization

Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) often exhibit positional bias in long-context settings, under-attending to information in the middle of inputs. We investigate the presence of this bias in long-form summarization, its impact on faithfulness, and various techniques to mitigate this bias. To consistently evaluate faithfulness, we first compile a benchmark of eight human-annotated long-form summarization datasets and perform a meta-evaluation of faithfulness metrics. We show that LLM-based faithfulness metrics, though effective with full-context inputs, remain sensitive to document order, indicating positional bias. Analyzing LLM-generated summaries across six datasets, we find a "U-shaped" trend in faithfulness, where LLMs faithfully summarize the beginning and end of documents but neglect middle content. Perturbing document order similarly reveals models are less faithful when important documents are placed in the middle of the input. We find that this behavior is partly due to shifting focus with context length: as context increases, summaries become less faithful, but beyond a certain length, faithfulness improves as the model focuses on the end. Finally, we experiment with different generation techniques to reduce positional bias and find that prompting techniques effectively direct model attention to specific positions, whereas more sophisticated approaches offer limited improvements. 33. DiffLight: A Partial Rewards Conditioned Diffusion Model for Traffic Signal Control with Missing Data

The application of reinforcement learning in traffic signal control (TSC) has been extensively researched and yielded notable achievements. However, most existing works for TSC assume that traffic data from all surrounding intersections is fully and continuously available through sensors. In real-world applications, this assumption often fails due to sensor malfunctions or data loss, making TSC with missing data a critical challenge. To meet the needs of practical applications, we introduce DiffLight, a novel conditional diffusion model for TSC under data-missing scenarios in the offline setting. Specifically, we integrate two essential sub-tasks, i.e., traffic data imputation and decision-making, by leveraging a Partial Rewards Conditioned Diffusion (PRCD) model to prevent missing rewards from interfering with the learning process. Meanwhile, to effectively capture the spatial-temporal dependencies among intersections, we design a Spatial-Temporal transFormer (STFormer) architecture. In addition, we propose a Diffusion Communication Mechanism (DCM) to promote better communication and control performance under data-missing scenarios. Extensive experiments on five datasets with various data-missing scenarios demonstrate that DiffLight is an effective controller to address TSC with missing data. 34. A test-free semantic mistakes localization framework in Neural Code Translation

Abstract

In the task of code translation, neural network-based models have been shown to frequently produce semantically erroneous code that deviates from the original logic of the source code. This issue persists even with advanced large models. Although a recent approach proposed using test cases to identify these semantic errors, it relies heavily on the quality of the test cases and is not applicable to code snippets without test cases in real-world scenarios. Therefore, We present EISP, a static analysis framework based on the Large Language Model (LLM).First, the framework generates a semantic mapping between source code and translated code. Next, each sub-code fragment is identified by recursively traversing the abstract syntax tree of the source code, and its corresponding translated code fragment is found through the semantic mapping. Finally, EISP connects each pair of sub-code fragments with fine-grained knowledge hints through an AI chain to assist LLMs in discovering semantic mistakes in the translated code. In our benchmark evaluation, the EISP framework, based on GPT-4o mini, achieved an accuracy of 82.3\%, representing a 20.3\% improvement over baseline methods using the same base model, and a 7.4\% improvement compared to dynamic analysis methods that require test cases and manual intervention. To our knowledge, EISP is the first tool to locate semantic errors in translated code without test cases or compilable code. This innovative tool provides the software engineering community with a new way to deal with code fragments without test cases.

Single-view 3D reconstruction methods like Triplane Gaussian Splatting (TGS) have enabled high-quality 3D model generation from just a single image input within seconds. However, this capability raises concerns about potential misuse, where malicious users could exploit TGS to create unauthorized 3D models from copyrighted images. To prevent such infringement, we propose a novel image protection approach that embeds invisible geometry perturbations, termed "geometry cloaks", into images before supplying them to TGS. These carefully crafted perturbations encode a customized message that is revealed when TGS attempts 3D reconstructions of the cloaked image. Unlike conventional adversarial attacks that simply degrade output quality, our method forces TGS to fail the 3D reconstruction in a specific way - by generating an identifiable customized pattern that acts as a watermark. This watermark allows copyright holders to assert ownership over any attempted 3D reconstructions made from their protected images. Abstract

Using $(10087\pm44)\times 10^{6}$ $J/\psi$ decays collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for baryon number violation via $\Lambda-\bar{\Lambda}$ oscillation in the decay $J/\psi \to \Lambda \bar{\Lambda}$. No evidence for $\Lambda-\bar\Lambda$ oscillation is observed. The upper limit on the time-integrated probability of $\Lambda-\bar{\Lambda}$ oscillation is estimated to be $1.4\times 10^{-6}$, corresponding to an oscillation parameter less than $2.1\times 10^{-18}~\mathrm{GeV}$ at $90\%$ confidence level., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We present a novel approach for reconstructing annual temperatures in East Asia from 1368 to 1911, leveraging the Reconstructed East Asian Climate Historical Encoded Series (REACHES). The lack of instrumental data during this period poses significant challenges to understanding past climate conditions. REACHES digitizes historical documents from the Ming and Qing dynasties of China, converting qualitative descriptions into a four-level ordinal temperature scale. However, these index-based data are biased toward abnormal or extreme weather phenomena, leading to data gaps that likely correspond to normal conditions. To address this bias and reconstruct historical temperatures at any point within East Asia, including locations without direct historical data, we employ a three-tiered statistical framework. First, we perform kriging to interpolate temperature data across East Asia, adopting a zero-mean assumption to handle missing information. Next, we utilize the Last Millennium Ensemble (LME) reanalysis data and apply quantile mapping to calibrate the kriged REACHES data to Celsius temperature scales. Finally, we introduce a novel Bayesian data assimilation method that integrates the kriged Celsius data with LME simulations to enhance reconstruction accuracy. We model the LME data at each geographic location using a flexible nonstationary autoregressive time series model and employ regularized maximum likelihood estimation with a fused lasso penalty. The resulting dynamic distribution serves as a prior, which is refined via Kalman filtering by incorporating the kriged Celsius REACHES data to yield posterior temperature estimates. Abstract

Generating lifelike human motions from descriptive texts has experienced remarkable research focus in the recent years, propelled by the emerging requirements of digital humans.Despite impressive advances, existing approaches are often constrained by limited control modalities, task specificity, and focus solely on body motion representations.In this paper, we present MotionGPT-2, a unified Large Motion-Language Model (LMLM) that addresses these limitations. MotionGPT-2 accommodates multiple motion-relevant tasks and supporting multimodal control conditions through pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs). It quantizes multimodal inputs-such as text and single-frame poses-into discrete, LLM-interpretable tokens, seamlessly integrating them into the LLM's vocabulary. These tokens are then organized into unified prompts, guiding the LLM to generate motion outputs through a pretraining-then-finetuning paradigm. We also show that the proposed MotionGPT-2 is highly adaptable to the challenging 3D holistic motion generation task, enabled by the innovative motion discretization framework, Part-Aware VQVAE, which ensures fine-grained representations of body and hand movements. Extensive experiments and visualizations validate the effectiveness of our method, demonstrating the adaptability of MotionGPT-2 across motion generation, motion captioning, and generalized motion completion tasks.

Abstract

We investigate the energy band structure and energy levels of a heterojunction composed of two antiferromagnetic graphene nanoflakes with opposite in-plane antiferromagnetic orderings, in which the modified Kane-Mele model is employed. Before forming an antiferromagnetic graphene heterojunction, the energy gap of helical edge states in each isolated graphene nanoflake are opened by the antiferromagnetic ordering and there is no the in-gap corner state. We find that when two opposite antiferromagnetic graphenes are coupled to form a heterojunction nanoflake, topologically protected zero-dimensional in-gap states can be induced. In addition, we demonstrate that the in-gap states locate at the end of the interface and are robust against magnetic disorder, Anderson disorder, and interfacial magnetic defects. Abstract

Location-based services (LBS) have accumulated extensive human mobility data on diverse behaviors through check-in sequences. These sequences offer valuable insights into users' intentions and preferences. Yet, existing models analyzing check-in sequences fail to consider the semantics contained in these sequences, which closely reflect human visiting intentions and travel preferences, leading to an incomplete comprehension. Drawing inspiration from the exceptional semantic understanding and contextual information processing capabilities of large language models (LLMs) across various domains, we present Mobility-LLM, a novel framework that leverages LLMs to analyze check-in sequences for multiple tasks. Since LLMs cannot directly interpret check-ins, we reprogram these sequences to help LLMs comprehensively understand the semantics of human visiting intentions and travel preferences. Specifically, we introduce a visiting intention memory network (VIMN) to capture the visiting intentions at each record, along with a shared pool of human travel preference prompts (HTPP) to guide the LLM in understanding users' travel preferences. These components enhance the model's ability to extract and leverage semantic information from human mobility data effectively. Abstract

Invisible watermarking is essential for safeguarding digital content, enabling copyright protection and content authentication. However, existing watermarking methods fall short in robustness against regeneration attacks. In this paper, we propose a novel method called FreqMark that involves unconstrained optimization of the image latent frequency space obtained after VAE encoding. Specifically, FreqMark embeds the watermark by optimizing the latent frequency space of the images and then extracts the watermark through a pre-trained image encoder. This optimization allows a flexible trade-off between image quality with watermark robustness and effectively resists regeneration attacks. Experimental results demonstrate that FreqMark offers significant advantages in image quality and robustness, permits flexible selection of the encoding bit number, and achieves a bit accuracy exceeding 90% when encoding a 48-bit hidden message under various attack scenarios.

42. Magnetization-Induced Phase Transitions on the surface of 3D Topological Insulators

Abstract

From the low-energy model, the topological field theory indicates that the surface magnetization can open a surface gap in 3D topological insulators (TIs), resulting in a half-quantized Hall conductance. Here by employing the realistic lattice model, we show the occurrence of { the surface phase transitions}, accompanied with the sharp changes of the surface Chern number from $\frac{1}{2}$ to $-\frac{3}{2}$ finally to $-\frac{1}{2}$, in 3D TIs induced by surface magnetization. These surface phase transitions lead to the sudden jumps in the magneto-electric coefficient and the quantum Hall conductance, which are experimentally observable. Furthermore, we present the phase diagram that elucidates the behavior of the 3D TI surface Chern numbers under surface magnetization for different $Z_{4}$ topological numbers. Our study highlights the presence of the new phases with broken bulk-boundary correspondence and enriches understandings of the properties of TIs.

43. Quarter-quantized thermal Hall effect with parity anomaly

Abstract

We show that in the proximity of s-wave superconductors, the magnetic topological surface states can transform into Majorana surface state, featuring a single gapless Majorana cone with parity anomaly when the superconducting pairing gap matches the surface magnetization gap. The emergence of $N=1/2$ Majorana chiral edge current is observed at the boundaries between the gap region and the gapless region. Additionally, in systems with a single gapless Majorana cone, a quarter-quantized thermal Hall conductance appears under the dephasing. By mapping the system to a conductor-network model, we identify the appearance of 1/4 chiral heat channels as the cause of the quarter-quantized Hall thermal conductance. We observe the stability of this quarter-quantized thermal conductance under temperature variations, serving as a distinctive feature indicating the presence of a single gapless Majorana cone in the system. Our models can be experimentally realized using magnetic topological insulators or iron-based superconductors.

Abstract

Measurements of $CP$ observables and the CKM angle $\gamma$ are performed in $B^{\pm} \to D K^*(892)^{\pm}$ decays, where $D$ represents a superposition of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}{}^0$ states, using the LHCb dataset collected during Run 1 (2011-2012) and Run 2 (2015-2018). A comprehensive study of this channel is presented with the $D$ meson reconstructed in two-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$, $K^+K^-$ and $\pi^+\pi^-$; four-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ and $\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$; and three-body final states $K^0_{S} \pi^+\pi^-$ and $K^0_{S} K^+ K^-$. This analysis includes the first observation of the suppressed $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ decays. Abstract

In spatial design, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools often generate the entire spatial design outcome in a single automated step, rather than engaging users in a deepening and iterative process. This significantly reduces users' involvement, learning, and creative capabilities, leading to a superficial understanding of spatial design. We conducted a Wizard-of-Oz study, where Novices and AI (acted by experimenters) worked together to finish spatial design tasks using various AI models. We identified typical function and workflow patterns adopted by the participants, leading to the understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the human-AI co-creation process. Based on insights gathered from this research, we proposed some design implications of the novice-AI collaboration system that aims to democratize spatial design through a progressive, iterative co-creation process., Comment: draft submission to CHI 2025

Abstract

Personalized Federated Graph Learning (pFGL) facilitates the decentralized training of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) without compromising privacy while accommodating personalized requirements for non-IID participants. In cross-domain scenarios, structural heterogeneity poses significant challenges for pFGL. Nevertheless, previous pFGL methods incorrectly share non-generic knowledge globally and fail to tailor personalized solutions locally under domain structural shift. We innovatively reveal that the spectral nature of graphs can well reflect inherent domain structural shifts. Correspondingly, our method overcomes it by sharing generic spectral knowledge. Moreover, we indicate the biased message-passing schemes for graph structures and propose the personalized preference module. Combining both strategies, we propose our pFGL framework FedSSP which Shares generic Spectral knowledge while satisfying graph Preferences. Furthermore, We perform extensive experiments on cross-dataset and cross-domain settings to demonstrate the superiority of our framework. Abstract

Chaos characterized by its irregularity and high sensitivity to initial conditions finds various applications in secure optical communications, random number generations, light detection and ranging systems, etc. Semiconductor lasers serve as ideal light platforms for chaos generations owing to the advantages in on-chip integration and complex nonlinear effects. In near-infrared wavelengths, semiconductor laser based chaotic light sources have been extensively studied and experimentally demonstrated. However, in the terahertz (THz) spectral range, due to the lack of effective THz light sources and high-speed detectors, chaos generation in THz semiconductor lasers, e.g., quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), is particularly challenging. Due to the fast intersubband carrier transitions, single mode THz QCLs resemble Class A lasers, where chaos can be hardly excited, even with external perturbations. In this work, we experimentally show a THz chaos source based on a sole multimode THz QCL without any external perturbations. Such a dynamical regime is characterized by the largest Lyapunov exponent associated to the temporal traces of the measured radio frequency (intermode beatnote) signal of the laser. The experimental results and chaos validation are confirmed by simulations of our model based on effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch Equations. To further understand the physical mechanism of the chaos generation in THz QCLs, a reduced model based on two coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations is derived from the full model cited above to systematically investigate the effects of the linewidth enhancement factor and group velocity dispersion on the chaotic regime. This model allows us to show that the chaos generation in the THz QCL can be ascribed to the system attaining the defect mediated turbulence regime., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

By analyzing $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data with an integrated luminosity of 7.9~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV, the branching fraction of $D^+\to\tau^+\nu_{\tau}$ is determined as $\mathcal{B}=(9.9\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.5_\mathrm{syst})\times10^{-4}$. Taking the most precise result $\mathcal{B}(D^+\to\mu^+\nu_{\mu})=(3.981\pm 0.079_\mathrm{stat}\pm0.040_\mathrm{syst})\times10^{-4}$, we determine $R_{\tau/\mu} = \Gamma(D^+\to\tau^+\nu_{\tau})/\Gamma(D^+\to\mu^+\nu_{\mu})= 2.49\pm0.31$, achieving a factor of two improvement in precision compared to the previous BESIII result. This measurement is in agreement with the standard model prediction of lepton flavor universality within one standard deviation.

Abstract

Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) excel in cross-model tasks but experience performance declines in long-context reasoning due to overreliance on textual information and reduced visual dependency. In this study, we empirically analyze LVLMs in long-context reasoning, revealing that increased context length leads to a higher dependence on language at the expense of visual dependency. To address this issue, we propose a novel training-free context pruning method that selectively removes less critical textual information. Our approach enhances visual dependency and reduces textual noise, thereby improving LVLM performance in long-context reasoning. We validate our method by constructing a long-context dataset, demonstrating its effectiveness across various LVLMs. Moreover, further analysis confirms the robustness of different token pruning strategies and preliminary explores scaling laws between pruning rates and context length.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider the importance of channel measurement data from specific sites and its impact on air interface optimization and test. Currently, a range of statistical channel models including 3GPP 38.901 tapped delay line (TDL), clustered delay line (CDL), urban microcells (UMi) and urban macrocells (UMa) type channels are widely used for air interface performance testing and simulation. However, there remains a gap in the realism of these models for air interface testing and optimization when compared with real world measurement based channels. To address this gap, we compare the performance impacts of training neural receivers with 1) statistical 3GPP TDL models, and 2) measured macro-cell channel impulse response (CIR) data. We leverage our OmniPHY-5G neural receiver for NR PUSCH uplink simulation, with a training procedure that uses statistical TDL channel models for pre-training, and fine-tuning based on measured site specific MIMO CIR data. The proposed fine-tuning method achieves a 10% block error rate (BLER) at a 1.85 dB lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to pre-training only on simulated TDL channels, illustrating a rough magnitude of the gap that can be closed by site-specific training, and gives the first answer to the question "how much can fine-tuning the RAN for site-specific channels help?", Comment: Appears in the proceedings of the First Workshop on Research and Innovation in Testing and Integration for Open Radio Access Networks (RitiRAN)
