To complete earlier studies of the properties of the electric pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) obtained in various nuclear reactions, the excitation of the 1$^-$ states in $^{140}$Ce by $(e,e')$ scattering for momentum transfers $q=0.1-1.2$~fm$^{-1}$ is calculated within the plane-wave and distorted-wave Born approximations. The excited states of the nucleus are described within the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA), but also within the Quasiparticle-Phonon Model (QPM) by accounting for the coupling to complex configurations. It is demonstrated that the excitation mechanism of the PDR states in $(e,e')$ reactions is predominantly of transversal nature for scattering angles $\theta_e \approx 90^o-180^o$. Being thus mediated by the convection and spin nuclear currents, the $(e,e')$ like the $(\gamma,\gamma')$ reaction, may provide additional information to the one obtained from Coulomb- and hadronic excitations of the PDR in $(p,p')$, $(\alpha,\alpha')$, and heavy-ion scattering reactions. The calculations predict that the $(e,e')$ cross sections for the strongest individual PDR states are in general about three orders of magnitude smaller as compared to the one of the lowest $2^+_1$ state for the studied kinematics, but that they may become dominant at extreme backward angles., Comment: Prepared for the special issue of EPJA on the topic "Giant, Pygmy, Pairing Resonances and related topics" dedicated to the memory of Pier Francesco Bortignon

The Thermal Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation is combined with the Skyrme energy density functional method (Skyrme-TQRPA) to study the response of a hot nucleus to an external perturbation. For the sample nuclei, $^{56}$Fe and $^{82}$Ge, the Skyrme-TQRPA is applied to analyze thermal effects on the strength function of charge-neutral Gamow-Teller transitions which dominate neutrino-nucleus reactions at $E_\nu \lesssim 20$~MeV. For the relevant supernova temperatures we calculate the cross sections for inelastic neutrino scattering. We also apply the method to examine the rate of neutrino-antineutrino pair emission by hot nuclei. The cross sections and rates are compared with those obtained earlier from the TQRPA calculations based on the phenomenological Quasiparticle-Phonon Model Hamiltonian. Using the thermal quasiparticle random phase approximation, we study the process of neutrino and antineutrino capture on hot nuclei in supernova environments. For the sample nuclei $^{56}$Fe and $^{82}$Ge we perform a detailed analysis of thermal effects on the strength distribution of allowed Gamow-Teller transitions which dominate low-energy charged-current neutrino reactions. The finite temperature cross sections are calculated taking into account the contributions of both allowed and forbidden transitions. The enhancement of the low-energy cross sections is explained by considering thermal effects on the GT$_\pm$ strength. Experiments have been performed using a spherical superconducting microwave resonator that simulates the geometric structure of the C60 fullerene molecule. The objective was to study with very high resolution the exceptional spectral properties emerging from the symmetries of the icosahedral structure of the carbon lattice. In particular, the number of zero modes has been determined to test the predictions of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, which relates it to the topology of the curved carbon lattice. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental verification of the index theorem.

We study inelastic neutrino scattering off hot nuclei for temperatures relevant under supernova conditions. The method we use is based on the quasiparticle random phase approximation extended to finite temperatures within the thermo field dynamics (TQRPA). The method allows a transparent treatment of upward and downward transitions in hot nuclei, avoiding the application of Brink's hypothesis. For the sample nuclei $^{56}$Fe and $^{82}$Ge we perform a detailed analysis of thermal effects on the strength distributions of allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions which dominate the scattering process at low neutrino energies. For $^{56}$Fe and $^{82}$Ge the finite temperature cross-sections are calculated by taking into account the contribution of allowed and forbidden transitions. The observed enhancement of the cross-section at low neutrino energies is explained by considering thermal effects on the GT strength. We use a simple field theory model to investigate the role of the nucleon spin for the magnetic sum rules associated with the low-lying collective scissors mode in deformed nuclei. Various constraints from rotational symmetry are elucidated and discussed. We put special emphasis on the coupling of the spin part of the M1 operator to the low lying collective modes, and investigate how this coupling changes the sum rules., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Inelastic proton scattering at energies of a few hundred MeV and extreme forward angles selectively excites the isovector spin-flip M1 (IVSM1) resonance. A method based on isospin symmetry is presented to extract its electromagnetic transition strength from the (p,p') cross sections. It is applied to 48Ca, a key case for an interpretation of the quenching phenomenon of the spin-isospin response, and leads to a M1 strength consistent with an older (e,e') experiment excluding the almost two times larger value from a recent (\gamma,n) experiment. Good agreement with electromagnetic probes is observed in 208Pb suggesting the possibility to extract systematic information on the IVSM1 resonance in heavy nuclei., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We present experimental results for the density of states (DOS) of a superconducting microwave Dirac billiard which serves as an idealized model for the electronic properties of graphene. The DOS exhibits two sharp peaks which evolve into van Hove singularities with increasing system size. They divide the band structure into regions governed by the \emph{relativistic} Dirac equation and by the \emph{non-relativistic} Schr\"odinger equation, respectively. We demonstrate that in the thermodynamic limit a topological transition appears as a neck-disrupting Lifshitz transition in the number susceptibility and as an excited state transition in the electronic excitations. Furthermore, we recover the finite-size scaling typical for excited state quantum phase transitions involving logarithmic divergences and identify a quasi-order parameter.

Scattering of protons of several hundred MeV is a promising new spectroscopic tool for the study of electric dipole strength in nuclei. A case study of 208Pb shows that at very forward angles J^pi = 1- states are strongly populated via Coulomb excitation. A separation from nuclear excitation of other modes is achieved by a multipole decomposition analysis of the experimental cross sections based on theoretical angular distributions calculated within the quasiparticle-phonon model. The B(E1) transition strength distribution is extracted for excitation energies up to 9 MeV, i.e., in the region of the so-called pygmy dipole resonance (PDR). The Coulomb-nuclear interference shows sensitivity to the underlying structure of the E1 transitions, which allows for the first time an experimental extraction of the electromagnetic transition strength and the energy centroid of the PDR., Comment: submitted to Phys. The properties of strong-interaction matter are probed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In the context of measurements of the elliptic flow at RHIC and the LHC the shear viscosity is of particular interest. In this presentation we discuss recent results for eta/s in hadronic matter at vanishing baryo-chemical potential within kinetic theory. The level density of 2+ states in 40Ca has been extracted in the energy region of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (ISGQR) from a fluctuation analysis of high energy-resolution p,p') data taken at incident energies of 200 MeV at the K600 magnetic spectrometer of iThemba LABS, South Africa. Quasi-free scattering cross sections were calculated to estimate their role as a background contribution to the spectra and found to be small. The shape of the background was determined from the discrete wavelet transform of the spectra using a biorthogonal wavelet function normalized at the lowest particle separation threshold. The consequences of the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry are investigated in a field theory model for deformed nuclei, based on simple separable interactions. The crucial role of the Ward-Takahashi identities to describe the rotational states is emphasized. We show explicitly how the rotor picture emerges from the isoscalar Goldstone modes, and how the two-rotor model emerges from the isovector scissors modes. As an application of the formalism, we discuss the M1 sum rules in deformed nuclei, and make connection to empirical information., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

A benchmark experiment on 208Pb shows that polarized proton inelastic scattering at very forward angles including 0{\deg} is a powerful tool for high-resolution studies of electric dipole (E1) and spin magnetic dipole (M1) modes in nuclei over a broad excitation energy range to test up-to-date nuclear models. The extracted E1 polarizability leads to a neutron skin thickness r_skin = 0.156+0.025-0.021 fm in 208Pb derived within a mean-field model [Phys. Rev. Thermal effects for inelastic neutrino-nucleus scattering off even-even nuclei in the iron region are studied. Allowed and first-forbidden contributions to the cross sections are calculated within the quasiparticle random phase approximation, extended to finite temperatures within the Thermo-Field-Dynamics formalism. The GT$_0$ strength distribution at finite temperatures is calculated for the sample nucleus $^{54}$Fe. The neutral-current neutrino-nucleus inelastic cross section is calculated for relevant temperatures during the supernova core collapse. The thermal population of the excited states significantly enhances the cross section at low neutrino energies. In 16O and 40Ca an isoscalar, low-energy dipole transition (IS-LED) exhausting approximately 4% of the isoscalar dipole (ISD) energy-weighted sum rule is experimentally known, but conspicuously absent from recent theoretical investigations of ISD strength. The IS-LED mode coincides with the so-called isospin-forbidden E1 transition. We report that for N=Z nuclei up to 100Sn the fully self-consistent Random-Phase-Approximation with finite-range forces, phenomenological and realistic, yields a collective IS-LED mode, typically overestimating its excitation energy, but correctly describing its IS strength and electroexcitation form factor. The presence of E1 strength is solely due to the Coulomb interaction between the protons and the resulting isospin-symmetry breaking. The smallness of its value is related to the form of the transition density, due to translational invariance. The calculated values of E1 and ISD strength carried by the IS-LED depend on the effective interaction used. Attention is drawn to the possibility that in N-not-equal-Z nuclei this distinct mode of IS surface vibration can develop as such or mix strongly with skin modes and thus influence the pygmy dipole strength as well as the ISD strength function. We propose a new method to calculate stellar weak-interaction rates. It is based on the Thermo-Field-Dynamics formalism and allows the calculation of the weak-interaction response of nuclei at finite temperatures. The thermal evolution of the GT$_+$ distributions is presented for the sample nuclei $^{54, 56}$Fe and ~$^{76,78,80}$Ge. For Ge we also calculate the strength distribution of first-forbidden transitions. We show that thermal effects shift the GT$_+$ centroid to lower excitation energies and make possible negative- and low-energy transitions. In our model we demonstrate that the unblocking effect for GT$_+$ transitions in neutron-rich nuclei is sensitive to increasing temperature. The results are used to calculate electron capture rates and are compared to those obtained from the shell model., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Recent developments in the evaluation of vector-meson spectral functions in hot and dense matter are discussed with emphasis on connections to the chiral phase transition in QCD. Model independent approaches including chiral low-density expansions, lattice QCD, chiral and QCD sum rules are put into context with model predictions for in-medium vector-spectral function utilizing effective Lagrangians. Hadronic many-body calculations predict a strong broadening (and little mass shift) of the $\rho$ spectral function which rapidly increases close to the expected phase boundary of hadronic and quark-gluon matter. Pertinent dilepton rates appear to degenerate with perturbative quark-antiquark annihilation in the Quark-Gluon Plasma, suggestive for chiral symmetry restoration. Applications to low-mass dilepton spectra in heavy-ion collisions result in quantitative agreement with recent high-quality data at the CERN-SPS. Thermal radiation from temperatures around $T_c$ consistently reproduces the experimental dilepton excess observed at masses above 1 GeV as well. The interpretation of dilepton sources at high transverse momentum appears to be more involved., Comment: 48 pages, 59 ps/eps figures

The decay of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) in nuclei is studied by means of a nonlinear classical model consisting of several noninteracting nucleons (particles) moving in a potential well with an oscillating nuclear surface (wall). The motion of the nuclear surface is described by means of a collective variable which appears explicitly in the Hamiltonian as an additional degree of freedom. The total energy of the system is therefore conserved. Although the particles do not directly interact with each other, their motions are indirectly coupled by means of their interaction with the moving nuclear surface. We consider as free parameters in this model the degree of collectivity and the fraction of nucleons that participate to the decay of the collective excitation. Specifically, we have calculated the decay width of the ISGMR in the spherical nuclei $^{208}\rm{Pb}$, $^{144}\rm{Sm}$, $^{116}\rm{Sn}$ and $^{90}\rm{Zr}$. Despite its simplicity and its purely classical nature, the model reproduces the trend of the experimental data which show that with increasing mass number the decay width decreases. Moreover the experimental results (with the exception of $^{90}\rm{Zr}$) can be well fitted using appropriate values for the free parameters mentioned above. It is also found that these values allow for a good description of the experimentally measured $^{112}\rm{Sn}$ and $^{124}\rm{Sn}$ decay widths. In addition, we give a prediction for the decay width of the exotic isotope $^{132}Sn$ for which there is experimental interest. The agreement of our results with the corresponding experimental data for medium-heavy nuclei is dictated by the underlying classical mechanics i.e. the behaviour of the maximum Lyapunov exponent as a function of the system size.

A fundamental question of physics is what ultimately happens to matter as it is heated or compressed. In the realm of very high temperature and density the fundamental degrees of freedom of the strong interaction, quarks and gluons, come into play and a transition from matter consisting of confined baryons and mesons to a state with 'liberated' quarks and gluons is expected. The study of the possible phases of strongly-interacting matter is at the focus of many research activities worldwide. In this article we discuss physical aspects of the phase diagram, its relation to the evolution of the early universe as well as the inner core of neutron stars. We also summarize recent progress in the experimental study of hadronic or quark-gluon matter under extreme conditions with ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions., Comment: 20 pages, Rev. Mod. A detailed analysis of convergence properties of the Andreozzi-Lee-Suzuki iteration method, which is used for the calculation of low-momentum effective potentials Vlowk is presented. After summarizing different modifications of the iteration method for one-flavor channel we introduce a simple model in order to study the generalization of the iteration method to multi-flavor channels. The failure of a straightforward generalization is discussed. The introduction of a channel-dependent cutoff cures the conceptual and technical problems. By using the Continuum RPA (CRPA) method, the incoherent transition strength of the exotic mu - e conversion in the 208Pb and 40Ca nuclei is investigated. The question whether excited nuclear states lying high in the continuum give an important contribution to the incoherent rate is addressed. The admixture of spurious components in the rate coming from 1- excitations is investigated in detail by using the self-consistent CRPA with Skyrme interactions as well as a less consistent version and by employing two ways to remove the spurious strength: the use of effective operators or simply the exclusion of the spurious state appearing close to zero energy. The incoherent transition strength of the exotic mu-e conversion in the 208Pb nucleus is investigated by utilizing the Continuum RPA method, appropriate for the evaluation of the rate that goes to the continuum of the nuclear spectrum. We find that the contribution of resonances lying high in the continuum is not negligible. Special attention is paid to the detailed study of the pronounced 1- contribution which, according to previous calculations, dominates the overall incoherent rate in about all the nuclear targets. The spurious center of mass admixture to the partial rate originating from the 1- excitations is explored, and its elimination is performed by correcting properly the dipole operators. The results found this way show that the greatest portion of the total 1- contribution to the incoherent rate is spurious., Comment: 8 pages, incl. 7 figures, 1 table, using REVTEX4

We present a first exploratory study for hyperon-nucleon interactions using renormalization group techniques. The effective two-body low-momentum potential V_low-k is obtained by integrating out the high-momentum components from realistic Nijmegen YN potentials. A T-matrix equivalence approach is employed, so that the low-energy phase shifts are reproduced by V_low-k up to a momentum scale Lambda ~ 500 MeV. Although the various bare Nijmegen models differ somewhat from each other, the corresponding V_low-k interactions show convergence in some channels, suggesting a possible unique YN interaction at low momenta., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

The properties of the low-energy dipole response are investigated for the proton-rich doubly magic nucleus $^{48}$Ni, in a comparative study of two microscopic models: fully self-consistent Relativistic Random-Phase Approximation(RRPA) based on the novel density-dependent meson-exchange interactions, and Continuum Random-Phase Approximation(CRPA) using Skyrme-type interactions with the continuum properly included. Both models predict the existence of the low-energy soft mode, i.e. the proton pygmy dipole resonance (PDR), for which the transition densities and RPA amplitudes indicate the dynamics of loosely bound protons vibrating against the rest of the nucleons. The CRPA analysis indicates that the escape width for the proton PDR is rather large, as a result of the coupling to the continuum., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We consider the relation between relaxation time and the largest Lyapunov exponent in a system of two coupled oscillators, one of them being harmonic. It has been found that in a rather broad region of parameter space, contrary to the common expectation, both Lyapunov exponent and relaxation time increase as a function of the total energy. This effect is attributed to the fact that above a critical value of the total energy, although the Lyapunov exponent increases, KAM tori appear and the chaotic fraction of phase space decreases. We examine the required conditions and demonstrate the key role of the dispersion relation for this behaviour to occur. We investigate the modification of antikaons in isospin symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter. Using the leading s-wave couplings of the SU(3) chiral meson-baryon Lagrangian we solve the coupled channel kaon-nucleon scattering equation selfconsistently. The in-medium antikaon propagator is calculated for different densities and different proton/neutron ratios. The spectral function of the antikaon is found to be broadened strongly, and its mass is shifted downward significantly. However, comparing the effective in-medium mass of the antikaon to the relevant charge chemical potential of neutron star matter, we find that kaon condensation is unlikely to occur in neutron stars., Comment: 29 pages, 35 figures; v2: additional curves for symmetric matter in Figs 14,15; references added

We have used a self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock plus Continuum-RPA model to study the low-multipole response of stable and neutron/proton-rich Ni and Sn isotopes. We focus on the momentum-transfer dependence of the strength distribution, as it provides information on the structure of excited nuclear states and in particular on the variations of the transition form factor (TFF) with the energy. Our results show, among other things, that the TFF may show significant energy dependence in the region of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance and that the TFF corresponding to the threshold strength in the case of neutron-rich nuclei is different compared to the one corresponding to the respective giant resonance. The transition density and current provide valuable insight into the nature of nuclear vibrations. Nuclear vorticity is a quantity related to the transverse transition current. In this work, we study the evolution of the strength distribution, related to density fluctuations, and the vorticity strength distribution, as the neutron drip line is approached. Our results on the isoscalar, natural-parity multipole response of Ni isotopes, obtained by using a self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock + Continuum RPA model, indicate that, close to the drip line, the low-energy response is dominated by L>1 vortical transitions., Comment: 8 pages, incl. 4 figures; to appear in Phys.Lett.B

An extended Holstein-Primakoff mapping which incorporates both single- and double boson mappings is used in the context of O(N+1) anharmonic oscillator with the global symmetry broken down to O(N) to study the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion. We investigate the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators, especially their infrared properties, at non-vanishing temperatures. At low energies the particle-hole (ph) part of the pionic susceptibility in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter is known to behave very differently from the susceptibility in finite nuclei due to the presence of an energy gap in the ph excitation spectrum. In this note we show that for charged pions in N > Z nuclei the changes due to the gap are very similar to those in the symmetric case, except at very low momenta, where a qualitatively different behavior is found., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, revtex 4

Within a self-consistent proper-time Renormalization Group (RG) approach we investigate an effective QCD trace anomaly realization with dilatons and determine the finite-temperature behavior of the gluon condensate. Fixing the effective model at vanishing temperature to the glueball mass and the bag constant a possible gluonic phase transition is explored in detail. We address the role of fluctuations in strongly interacting matter during the dense stages of a heavy-ion collision through its electromagnetic emission. Fluctuations of isospin charge are considered in a thermal system at rest as well as in a moving hadronic fluid at fixed proper time within a finite bin of pseudo-rapidity. In the former case, we use general thermodynamic relations to establish a connection between fluctuations and the space-like screening limit of the retarded photon self-energy, which directly relates to the emissivities of dileptons and photons. Effects of hadronic interactions are highlighted through two illustrative calculations. In the latter case, we show that a finite time scale $\tau$ inherent in the evolution of a heavy-ion collision implies that equilibrium fluctuations involve both space-like and time-like components of the photon self-energy in the system. Our study of non-thermal effects, explored here through a stochastic treatment, shows that an early and large fluctuation in isospin survives only if it is accompanied by a large temperature fluctuation at freeze-out, an unlikely scenario in hadronic phases with large heat capacity. We point out prospects for the future which include: (1) A determination of the Debye mass of the system at the dilute freeze-out stage of a heavy-ion collision, and (2) A delineation of the role of charge fluctuations during the dense stages of the collision through a study of electromagnetic emissivities., Comment: 12 pages ReVTeX incl. 4 ps-figs

Within a chiral model which provides a good description of the properties of rho and a_1 mesons in vacuum, it is shown that, to order T^2, the rho- and a_1-meson masses remain constant in the chiral limit, even if at tree level they are proportional to the chiral condensate, sigma_0. Numerically, the temperature dependence of the masses turns out to be small also for realistic parameter sets and high temperatures. The weak temperature dependence of the masses is consistent with the Eletsky-Ioffe mixing theorem, and traces of mixing effects can be seen in the spectral function of the vector correlator at finite temperature., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Revtex 4

The quantum-kinetic energy of a finite number of trapped fermionic atoms provides a restoring force for shear motion due to a distortion of the momentum distribution. In analogy to the twist mode of nuclear physics it is proposed that counter-rotating the upper and lower hemisphere of a spherical atomic cloud yields a finite-frequency mode closely related to transverse zero-sound waves in bulk Fermi liquids., Comment: 4 pages, 1 table (using REVTeX)

In a kinematically complete experiment at the Mainz microtron MAMI, pion angular distributions of the $^3$He(e,e'$\pi^+)^3$H reaction have been measured in the excitation region of the $\Delta$ resonance to determine the longitudinal ($L$), transverse ($T$), and the $LT$ interference part of the differential cross section. The data are described only after introducing self-energy modifications of the pion and $\Delta$-isobar propagators. Using Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) to extrapolate the pion self energy as inferred from the measurement on the mass shell, we deduce a reduction of the $\pi^+$ mass of $\Delta m_{\pi^+} = (-1.7^{+ 1.7}_{- 2.1})$ MeV/c$^2$ in the neutron-rich nuclear medium at a density of $\rho = (0.057^{+ 0.085}_{- 0.057})$ fm$^{-3}$. We present a chirally symmetric hadronic model for the vector and axial-vector correlators in vacuum. The dominant contributions to these correlators come from intermediate pions, rho and a_1 mesons which are calculated in one-loop approximation. The resulting spectral functions are compared with the data obtained by the ALEPH collaboration from tau decay. In the vector channel we find good agreement up to q^2 = 1 GeV^2, in the transverse axial-vector channel up to q^2 = 2 GeV^2, corresponding to the regimes dominated by two-pion or three-pion decay channels, respectively. We compare two different possibilities to include meson-loop corrections in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model: a strict 1/N_c-expansion in next-to-leading order and a non-perturbative scheme corresponding to a one-meson-loop approximation to the effective action. Both schemes are consistent with chiral symmetry, in particular with the Goldstone theorem and the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation. The numerical part at zero temperature focuses on the pion and the rho-meson sector. For the latter the meson-loop-corrections are crucial in order to include the dominant rho -> pipi-decay channel, while the standard Hartree + RPA approximation only contains unphysical qqbar-decay channels. We find that m_\pi, f_\pi, and quantities related to the rho-meson self-energy can be described reasonably with one parameter set in the 1/N_c-expansion scheme, whereas we did not succeed to obtain such a fit in the non-perturbative scheme. We also investigate the temperature dependence of the quark condensate. Here we find consistency with chiral perturbation theory to lowest order. We derive and solve flow equations for a general O(N)-symmetric effective potential including wavefunction renormalization corrections combined with a heat-kernel regularization. We investigate the model at finite temperature and study the nature of the phase transition in detail. The fine structure of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance in ^{208}Pb, observed in high-resolution (p,p') and (e,e') experiments, is studied using the entropy index method. In a novel way, it enables to determine the number of scales present in the spectra and their magnitude. We find intermediate scales of fluctuations around 1.1 MeV, 460 keV and 125 keV for an excitation energy region 0 - 12 MeV. A comparison with scales extracted from second RPA calculations, which are in good agreement with experiment, shows that they arise from the internal mixing of collective motion with two particle-two hole components of the nuclear wavefunction., Comment: 14 pages including 6 figures (to be published in Phys. We discuss medium modifications of the unitarized pion-pion interaction in the nuclear medium. We incorporate both the effects of chiral symmetry restoration and the influence of collective nuclear pionic modes, originating from the p-wave coupling of the pion to delta-hole configurations. The influence of a dropping sigma-meson mass on previously calculated in-medium pion-pion correlations in the J=I=0 (sigma-meson) channel is investigated. It is found that the invariant-mass distribution around the vacuum threshold experiences a further strong enhancement over and above the standard many-body effects.
