Tailored metal alloy thin film-oxide interfaces generated using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) deposition of alloy thin films on a single crystalline oxide substrate can be used for detailed studies of irradiation damage response on the interface structure. However, the presence of nanoscale phase separation in the MBE grown alloy thin films can impact the metal-oxide interface structure. Due to nanoscale domain size of such phase separation, it is very challenging to characterize by conventional techniques. Therefore, laser assisted atom probe tomography (APT) was utilized to study the phase separation in epitaxial Cr0.61Mo0.39, Cr0.77Mo0.23, and Cr0.32V0.68 alloy thin films grown by MBE on MgO(001) single crystal substrates. Statistical analysis, namely frequency distribution analysis and Pearson coefficient analysis of experimental data was compared with similar analyses conducted on simulated APT datasets with known extent of phase separation. Thus, the presence of phase separation in Cr-Mo films, even when phase separation was not clearly observed by x-ray diffraction, and the absence of phase separation in the Cr-V film were confirmed. A total of 50 animals with milk flow disorders including 23 cows, 18 buffaloes and 9 goats were enrolled for the study. Out of these, 18 animals irrespective of species and lactation stage were subjected to surgical treatment by theloresectoscopy. The data on various teat disorders were analysed to elicit the incidence of teat affections in ruminants. The incidence was recorded on the basis of aetiology and teat lesions. Blood samples were collected from jugular vein before, during and after surgical procedure for evaluation of haemoglobin, total erythrocyte count, total leucocyte count and packed cell volume along with somatic cell count of milk samples collected from affected teats. No significant difference was noted in haematological parameters before, during and after thelorescectoscopy in cows, buffaloes and goats while significant decrease was noted in somatic cell count in all three species on thirtieth day after theloresectoscopy. Correlated activity of neurons can lead to long-term strengthening or weakening of the connections between them. In addition, the behavioral context, imparted by execution of physical movements or the presence of a reward, can modulate the plasticity induced by Hebbian mechanisms. In the present study, we have combined behavior and induced neuronal correlations to strengthen connections in the motor cortex of adult behaving monkeys. Correlated activity was induced using an electrical-conditioning protocol in which stimuli gated by voluntary movements were used to produce coactivation of neurons at motor-cortical sites involved in those movements. Delivery of movement-dependent stimulation resulted in small increases in the strength of associated cortical connections immediately after conditioning. Remarkably, when paired with further repetition of the movements that gated the conditioning stimuli, there were substantially larger gains in the strength of cortical connections, which occurred in a use-dependent manner, without delivery of additional conditioning stimulation. In the absence of such movements, little change was observed in the strength of motor-cortical connections. Performance of the motor behavior in the absence of conditioning also did not produce any changes in connectivity. Our results show that combining movement-gated stimulation with further natural use of the "conditioned" pathways after stimulation ends can produce use-dependent strengthening of connections in adult primates, highlighting an important role for behavior in cortical plasticity. Our data also provide strong support for combining movement-gated stimulation with use-dependent physical rehabilitation for strengthening connections weakened by a stroke or spinal cord injury.

Nanomedicine has the potential in enhancing the efficacy and bioavailability of anti-infective agents. Here we determined whether conjugation of the Malaysian cultivated seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii with silver-conjugated nanoparticles enhanced anti-acanthamoebic properties. Silver-conjugated K. alvarezii were successfully synthesized, followed by characterization with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, and transmission electron microscopy. Amoebicidal effects were evaluated against Acanthamoeba castellanii, and cytotoxicity assays were performed using HaCaT cells. Viability assays revealed that silver nanoparticles conjugated with K. alvarezii extract exhibited significant antiamoebic properties (P < 0.05). Nano-conjugates induced the production of reactive oxygen species. Importantly, silver-conjugated extract inhibited amoeba-mediated host cell damage as established by lactate dehydrogenase release. Neither the nano-conjugates nor the extract showed cytotoxicity against human cells in vitro. Liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy revealed several molecules, including 2,6-nonadien-1-ol, N-desmethyl trifluoperazine, dulciol B, lucidumol A, acetoxolone, 2-[4,6-bis(2,4-dimethylphenyl)-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl]-5-(octyloxy)phenol, C16 sphinganine, 22-tricosenoic acid, and β-dihydrorotenone, of which dulciol B and C16 sphinganine are known to possess antimicrobial activities. In summary, marine organisms are an important source of bioactive molecules with anti-acanthamoebic properties that can be enhanced by conjugating with silver nanoparticles. Acanthamoeba spp. are free living amoeba (FLA) which are widely distributed in nature. They are opportunistic parasites and can cause severe infections to the eye, skin and central nervous system. The advances in drug discovery and modifications in the chemotherapeutic agents have shown little improvement in morbidity and mortality rates associated with Acanthamoeba infections. The mechanism-based process of drug discovery depends on the molecular drug targets present in the signaling pathways in the genome. Synthetic libraries provide a platform for broad spectrum of activities due to their desired structural modifications. Azoles, originally a class of synthetic anti-fungal drugs, disrupt the fungal cell membrane by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol through the inhibition of cytochrome P450 dependent 14α-lanosterol, a key step of the sterol pathway. Acanthamoeba and fungi share the presence of similar sterol intermediate, as ergosterol is also the major end-product in the sterol biosynthesis in Acanthamoeba. Sterols present in the eukaryotic cell membrane are one of the most essential lipids and exhibit important structural and signaling functions. Therefore, in this review we highlight the importance of specific targeting of ergosterol present in Acanthamoebic membrane by azole compounds for amoebicidal activity. Previously, azoles have also been repurposed to report antimicrobial, antiparasitic and antibacterial properties. Moreover, by loading the azoles into nanoparticles through advanced techniques in nanotechnology, such as physical encapsulation, adsorption, or chemical conjugation, the pharmacokinetics and therapeutic index of the drugs can be significantly improved. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy affecting both motor and sensory peripheral nerves. Typically presenting after a gastrointestinal or a respiratory tract infection, it manifests as ascending paralysis with concomitant areflexia in patients. Cytoalbuminologic dissociation is a supportive finding on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Due to variability in presentation, misdiagnosis and delay in treatment can occur, and consequently, GBS can become life threatening due to respiratory failure. We report ascending paralysis in a 36-year-old woman with known history of bipolar disorder who recently recovered from aspiration pneumonia following a drug overdose event. Given her psychiatric history, she was initially misdiagnosed as conversion disorder. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy was initiated at our hospital due to strong suspicion of GBS, based on history and physical examination findings consistent with flaccid quadriparesis and impending respiratory failure. CSF analysis and radiological findings subsequently supported our clinical suspicion and clinical findings. Concurrent IVIG therapy, pain management, aggressive physical and respiratory therapy, and monitoring resulted in symptom improvement. One must have a high index of suspicion for GBS when presented with acute inflammatory demyelinating neuropathies in patients who present with ascending paralysis. Early initiation of therapy is key and can prevent life-threatening complications.

Thrombocytosis is defined as a platelet count greater than 400,000/mcL. We report the case of a patient who developed thrombocytosis after receiving ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone therapy. A 73-year-old African-American female presented to the hospital with altered mental status attributed to sepsis and urinary tract infection. Patient was initiated on multiple empiric antibiotic therapy and was subsequently transitioned to ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone at different times as definitive therapy for treatment of Escherichia coli bacteremia and Escherichia coli urinary tract infection. The patient developed thrombocytosis during and/or proximally to the administration of ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone. A myeloproliferative source for the thrombocytosis was ruled out by the hematology/oncology team with a negative Janus kinase 2 V617F mutation assay result. In addition, other nondrug reactive sources of thrombocytosis (infection and anemia) were generally ruled out because the thrombocytosis was proximally linked with ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone administration. The Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Probability Scale assigned a score of 5, indicating ciprofloxacin or ceftriaxone independently or in combination as a probable cause of thrombocytosis. This case report suggests that ciprofloxacin in combination with ceftriaxone (a beta-lactam antibiotic) may be a probable cause of thrombocytosis.

A 19-yr-old female presented with three root canals and dens formation in a maxillary right lateral incisor. This rare condition was treated with conventional endodontic therapy.

Removal of foreign objects from the root canal is often a very difficult procedure. The procedure is even more complicated if the foreign body is unusual. To cases are presented in which the foreign objects were removed with minimal loss to the intracanal space.

A case is presented in which a nasopalatine duct cyst was misdiagnosed. Its subsequent mismanagement was further compounded with improper endodontic therapy. It was finally managed by corrective endodontic and surgical therapy.

Endemic fluorosis is a public health problem in many parts of Kenya due to high fluoride content in the drinking water. The Kenyan Government is committed to development of water sources with the object of supplying safe and sufficient water to the entire population by the year 2000. This water will contain high amounts of fluoride thereby increasing the incidence of severe endemic fluorosis in Kenya. Development of procedures for partial defluoridation should therefore be considered. Various defluoridation methods adopted in different places affected with endemic fluorosis are reviewed in the present article, with special reference to problems of operation and limitations in their application.

The procedure that uses the response of subcutaneous connective tissue to screen dental materials and drugs will continue to be favored because of its simplicity, economy, reliability, and usefulness. The techniques of subcutaneous injection and of implantation of capsules by surgical means have many disadvantages. A modified technique is suggested; it has the ease of injection and the precision of implantation and it overcomes the difficulties inherent in both techniques.
