A glassy phase with glass transition (GT) was formed in a wide B content range of 12–31 at% for (Co0.75Cr0.125Mo0.125)100-xBx alloys. The appearance of GT at the low metalloid content of 12%B among Co-, Fe- and Ni-based alloys is the first, in contrast to the absence of GT for (Fe0.75Cr0.125Mo0.125)88B12 and (Ni0.75Cr0.125Mo0.125)88B12 alloys. The Co-based 12%B glassy alloy crystallized through unique three stages, i.e., glass (G) → [G + hcp + fcc] → [G + fcc] → [fcc + M23B6]. The appearance of GT is due to the necessity of long-range rearrangement of constituent elements for the simultaneous precipitation of hcp and fcc phases from glassy phase. The glass transition temperature, crystallization temperature, Vickers hardness (Hv) and Young's modulus for the Co-based glassy alloys increase linearly with increasing B content and reach 904 K, 946 K, 1566 and 188 GPa, respectively, at 31%B. The good bending plasticity is retained up to 29%B. The crystallization of the 27–29%B alloy occurs through G → [G + M23B6] → [M23B6 + M2B] and the ultrahigh Hv above 2000 is attained for the metastable [G + M23B6] phase state. The glassy alloy rod with a diameter of 1 mm was prepared for the 27%B alloy and exhibited ultrahigh yield strength of 4700 MPa, plastic strain of 1% and high oxidation resistance up to about 1200 K. The Co-based bulk glassy alloy with simultaneously high strength, ultrahigh hardness and high oxidation resistance, is promising for the future high hardness and heat-resistance materials.

Biomedical devices currently in use (prostheses, implants) have satisfactory performance in many cases. However, sometimes the body reacts to the device insertion and may lead to its rapid replacement. Some of these disadvantages can be solved by the use of titanium and its alloys, due to their excellent combination of corrosion resistance, wear resistance and biocompatibility compared to other competing biomaterials. This paper presents the possibility of obtaining near beta titanium alloy with ultrafine grains produced by severe plastic deformation. For this, the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy was processed by high-pressure torsion processing method. Samples were processed with different loads and number of turns. After characterization, it was observed that after applying three turns, a load of 1GPa produces more Ti-beta phase than a load of 6 GPa. However, as expected, the larger the load, the higher the refinement.

Abstract The (de)hydrogenation properties of a TiFe intermetallic compound (IMC) alloy activated by cold rolling inside a glovebox at ambient temperature were investigated by kinetic measurements, x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Rate-limiting steps were identified by testing kinetic models on hydrogen absorption and desorption curves. To prevent surface poisoning during air exposure, the TiFe IMC was also cold rolled with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The addition of either PTFE or UHMWPE to nanostructured TiFe by cold rolling did not produce a polymer-metal composite with O2 poisoning resistance, regardless of the polymer-mixing way adopted. This occurred because large surfaces of the particles were not adequately coated with polymer. The results identify challenges to the TiFe IMC polymer-covered material that must be overcome before a methodology can significantly contribute to the formation of nanostructured TiFe-polymer composites with enhanced hydrogen storage properties. The diffusion-controlled reactions in the cold-rolled TiFe IMC without polymer were prevalent in all cases, as predicted by the Jander three-dimensional diffusion model. The main contribution of this work regards estimation of the amount of hydrogen released, which was 0.60% after 6 min and reproducible for the three subsequent cycles.

Iron has low solubility in solid aluminum and for this reason it can lead to the formation of Fe-rich intermetallic phases (such as β-AlFeSi in Al-Si cast alloys) severely impairing the ductility of the material. Spray forming is an advanced casting process that has been described as a potential technique to highly decrease the β-AlFeSi formation, consequently increasing the ductility. This paper aims to study the effect of pouring and tundish temperature in the microstructure of 319 aluminum alloy with high iron content processed by spray forming. Spray formed ingots and overspray particles were analyzed for two different processing conditions. In order to evaluate the mechanical properties, the spray formed deposits were mechanically conformed by hot swaging. Results showed that the decrease in the β-AlFeSi content strongly depends on the processing conditions. Spray formed deposits processed by hot swaging presented high ductility, allowing a wide range of possibilities to apply casting alloys with high impurity content to more valuable applications beyond the casting industry, therefore decreasing the needs for using primary alloys and contributing to the environment. Microstructural and mechanical characterization of Al92Fe3Cr2X3 (X = Ce, Mn, Ti, and V) alloys were performed. The alloys were processed by a method that uses centrifugal force to cast the samples into a rotating copper mold. Microstructural characterization was carried out by means of x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Compressive tests at room and at 300 °C were performed in selected samples to evaluate their mechanical properties. Microstructural characterization showed the formation of quasicrystalline phases as well as other intermetallic phases embedded within an Al-FCC matrix. The Ce-containing alloy exhibited promising results regarding quasicrystalline phase formation and stability as well as with respect to its mechanical properties at high temperatures. The quasicrystalline phase of this alloy appears to be stable up to 545 °C when the DSC reveals an exothermic transformation. In addition, the presence of a eutectic structure surrounding the Al-FCC grains enhanced the mechanical strength of this alloy. At 300 °C, the Ce-containing alloy showed yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of 180 MPa and 360 MPa, respectively. If compared to a commercial aluminum alloy 2024 at the T6 condition, close to 300 °C, the alloy studied here showed an increase of more than 4 times in the yield strength, and almost 7 times in the ultimate tensile strength. The high thermal stability and mechanical properties at high temperatures of this alloy open interesting possibilities for further studies and future applications of this Al-Fe-Cr-Ce alloy. Magnesium and hafnium, two hydride-forming and biocompatible metals with hexagonal close-packed crystal structures, are thermodynamically immiscible even in the liquid form. In this study, these two elements were mechanically mixed by high-pressure torsion straining, and a new FCC (face-centered cubic) phase was formed although these two elements do not form the FCC phase even under high pressure or at high temperature. Microstructural examination by scanning-transmission electron microscopy combined with an ASTAR automatic crystal orientation and phase mapping technique confirmed that the FCC phase was stabilized mainly in the Hf-rich nanograins with localized supersaturation. Attempts to control the phase transformations under a hydrogen atmosphere to produce ternary magnesium–hafnium hydrides for hydrogen storage applications were unsuccessful; however, the material exhibited enhanced hardness to an acceptable level for some biomedical applications.

Thermal spraying processes allows high cooling rates and can favor the formation of amorphous microstructures. Amorphous metallic coatings can result in superior mechanical and functional properties. To follow new technological development and innovation paths, indicators based on patent data can be assembled to support technological forecasting assessments and decision making. This study mapped the technological development on amorphous alloys processed by thermal spraying using patent indicators from documents indexed in the Derwent Innovations Index database between the years 1997 and 2014. We evaluate the patent activity, the role of countries, the main technological subdomains and markets of interest, as well as the main metallic alloys explored as coating. We conclude that new technological developments should be expected in near future and these advances both in amorphous alloys and thermal spraying shall be constantly monitored in the coming years.

Coatings of amorphous metallic alloys can be obtained using different thermal spraying processes, such as HVOF, plasma spraying, cold spraying and others. Although many studies focused on investigating scientific issues concerning apply amorphous metallic coatings using thermal spraying, less attention have been paid to evaluate how research institutes and companies are collaborating and influencing each other to promote new technologies. In this paper, we assessed the collaboration of organizations and the knowledge flow on this relatively new field using bibliometrics and science mapping. The method relies on scientific publications indexed in Web of Science and clustered into research areas using the CWTS Publication-level Classification System. These results provide useful insights about how players are organized and may be used in the context of R&D management, science policy and decision making.

Magnesium (Mg) is a light metal with relatively low cost. Its hydride (MgH2) is interesting for the safe hydrogen storage in solid state and has a high gravimetric capacity of 7.6%. Practical application of Mg is still hampered by high reaction temperatures and slow kinetics. In order to improve it and focus on more viable industrial processing conditions, Mg plates, with or without iron (Fe) addition, in the form of wires and powders, were submitted to severe plastic deformation (SPD) in air, starting with extensive cold rolling (ECR), followed by repetitive rolling (ARB). The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). H2 storage properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Sievert's volumetric method. Mg processed by ECR+ARB resulted in larger grain refinement and densities of cracks than ECR. In addition, Fe in the form of continuous wires was fragmented and resulted in a better distribution of particles than powders, which agglomerated. Thus, finally, the synergetic effect of microstructural features and Fe as catalyst and its distribution improved activation, kinetics and hydrogen storage capacity.

In this paper, we report an investigation of adding a non-hydride forming element in the multicomponent Ti-V-Nb-M system. By the Calculation of Phase Diagrams approach (CALPHAD), the thermodynamic phase stability of the TiVNbT (T = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) was investigated, and Cr was selected as the fourth alloying element due its high tendency to stabilize body-centered cubic solid solutions (BCC). The (TiVNb)100−xCrx alloys (with x = 15, 25, and 35 at.% Cr) were synthesized by arc-melting. The structural characterization reveals that the three alloys were composed of a major BCC phase, which agrees with the thermodynamic calculations. The three alloys absorb hydrogen at room temperature without any activation treatment, achieving a hydrogen uptake of about H/M = 2. The Pressure-Composition-Isotherms curves (PCI) has shown that increasing the Cr amount increases the equilibrium pressures, indicating that tunable H storage properties can be achieved by controlling the alloys’ Cr content.

Based on the Fe60Cr8Nb8B24 alloy, reported in the literature as good Glass Forming Ability (GFA), in this study the GFA of two new compositions was proposed, Fe68-xCrxNb8B24 (x=10,12). They were evaluated as good candidates to be new compositions of Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG) with better corrosion resistance due to the high Cr content. Rapidly solidified glassy ribbons were processed, and based on their thermal characteristics, the critical thickness of the glassy structure formation (Zc) was estimated. The critical thickness (Zc) obtained experimentally using the wedge-shaped casting method was evaluated and it presented a much lower value than that estimated theoretically. However, the GFA of the compositions analyzed was ranked and this ranking (i.e. whichever has the most or least GFA) is in agreement with the result predicted theoretically. The GFA of Fe58Cr10Nb8B24, which presented a maximum thickness of the amorphous region of wedge-shaped samples of about 0.6 mm (but estimated it would be 3.56 mm), offered good prospects to be a new Fe-based glass former alloy which has better resistance to corrosion than the Fe60Cr8Nb8B24 alloy reported.

In this study, we have investigated the synthesis, microstructure and hydrogen storage properties of Mg-based nanocomposites containing different concentrations of TiCrV and TiCr1.2V0.8 alloys. The Mg-based nanocomposites of Mg containing Ti-Cr-V additives were prepared by reactive milling (RM) under hydrogen atmosphere. The structural characterization revealed the presence of the β-MgH2, γ-MgH2 and BCC phases in the powders samples after RM. In addition, a very refined and homogenous microstructure with average MgH2 crystallite size of around 10-12 nm was observed, including a nanometric dispersion of the additives in the magnesium hydride matrix. The doping with TiCrV and TiCr1,2V0,8 greatly improves the hydrogen desorption behavior of Mg in comparison with the sample without additive, resulting in the lowest onset temperature (240 ºC) for the sample containing 5%mol. of TiCrV. Very fast absorption and desorption kinetics at 275 ºC and 300 ºC (7 minutes and 5 minutes for full desorption and absorption, respectively) were observed in the samples containing TiCrV and TiCr1,2V0,8 without any notable difference between the type of additive used in comparison with the pure sample. However, a slight reduction in hydrogen capacity is observed in the mixtures than for the pure sample (6.7 wt.% against 7.3 wt.%).

A structural and mechanical characterization of pure aluminum and 2124 T6 aluminum alloy reinforced with quasicrystalline phases of composition Al65Cu20Fe15 and Al70.5Pd21Mn8.5 (%at.) were performed. The quasicrystalline phases were synthesized by arc melting and then milled to produce powder of the alloys, which were then mechanical mixed with the starting powders of aluminum and 2124 aluminum alloy. The composites were produced by hot extrusion of a mechanical mixture containing 20% (%wt.) of the reinforcing phases on the metallic matrix. The structural characterization of the composites was carried out by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical characterization was carried out by Vickers hardness measurements and torsion tests at room temperature. The pure aluminum/quasicrystal composite showed the presence of the same phases from the starting powder mixture while for the 2124 aluminum alloy/Al65Cu20Fe15 the quasicrystalline phase transformed to the tetragonal ω-Al7Cu2Fe during the solution heat treatment. Mechanical strength of the composites presented a substantial increase in comparison to the original matrix metal. While the equivalent ultimate tensile strength of the Al/quasicrystal composites reached values up to 215MPa and Vickers hardness up to 60HV, the 2124/quasicrystal composites reached values up to 670MPa and Vickers hardness up to 190HV.

A good glass former, Ti57.4Cu33.4Ni9.2, was selected using the topological instability criterion (lambda criterion) and the average electronegativity approach. The crystallization behavior and microstructural development of amorphous melt-spun ribbons of this new composition in response to heat treatment were investigated using a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that the crystallization of the Ti57.4Cu33.4Ni9.2 alloy takes place through of three exothermic reactions with the nucleation of TiCu, Ti2Cu and Ti2Ni. The kinetics of crystallization were investigated by DSC, and the kinetic parameters were determined using Kissinger’s method.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing process used to produce parts with complex geometries layer by layer. This rapid solidification method allows fabricating samples in a non-equilibrium state and with refined microstructure. In this work, this method is used to fabricate 3 mm diameter rods of a Cu-based shape memory alloy. The phase formation, thermal stability and mechanical properties were investigated and correlated. Samples with a relative density higher than 92% and without cracks were obtained. A single monoclinic martensitic phase was formed with average grain size ranging between 28 to 36 μm. The samples exhibit a reverse martensitic transformation temperature around 106 ± 2 °C and a large plasticity in compression (around 15±1%) with a typical “double-yielding” behaviour.

Consolidation of amorphous powders, which take advantage of the supercooled liquid region, is an alternative way to overcome the size limitation in marginal metallic glasses. Cu36Ti34Zr22Ni8based amorphous powders were obtained during high energy ball-milling. The analyses revealed that amorphous structures of powders and ribbons are quite different and this led to a different thermal behavior being the powders more thermally stable than the ribbons. Extrusion was initially proposed as a consolidation process; however, the decrease in viscosity in remainder amorphous matrix was not sufficient for that process, but certainly sufficient for sintering the sample during hot consolidation. An amorphous/nanocrystalline microstructure known for enhancing the mechanical properties of their fully amorphous counterparts was obtained. Evaluation of mechanical properties by microhardness revealed the relatively high hardness of HV 768. From these results, consolidation by sintering seems a promising route to produce bulk metallic glasses nanocomposites.

This paper presents the results of Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of Cu60.0Zr32.5Ti7.5 alloy through the open source code LAMMPS. Amorphous samples were produced by quenching the molten metal from 2300 to 300 K. The pair distribution functions of the liquid and solid were calculated. Moreover, the atomic short-range order at 800, 700 and 300 K was obtained by using the Voronoi tesselation method. Cu-centered icosahedral clusters were the prevailing configuration. The tensile stress-strain curve showed that the material present plastic deformation, however, shear bands were not observed in the MD simulation. The evolution of viscosity in temperatures higher than its glass transition temperature was also determined. Furthermore, the fragility of the alloy at glass temperature was evaluated.

Magnesium-based bulk metallic glasses are attractive due to their single-phase, chemically homogeneous alloy system and the absence of second-phase, which could impair the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, one of the unsolved problems for the manufacturability and the applications of bulk metallic glasses is that their glass-forming ability is very sensitive to the preparation techniques and impurity of components since oxygen in the environment would markedly deteriorate the glass-forming ability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish proper processing conditions to obtain a magnesium-based amorphous ternary alloy and its characterization. The final composition was prepared using two binary master alloys by melting in an induction furnace. Carbon steel crucible was used in argon atmosphere with and without addition of SF6 gas in order to minimize the oxygen contamination. The microstructure, amorphous nature, thermal properties and chemical analysis of samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry, respectively. The oxygen content of the as-cast samples was chemically analyzed by using carrier gas hot extraction (O/N Analyzer TC-436/LECO) and was kept bellow 25 ppm (without SF6) and 10 ppm (with SF6). Bulk samples were produced by rapid cooling in a cooper mold until 1.5 mm thickness, with amorphous structures being observed up to 2.5 mm.

The present work was aimed to demonstrate the possibility of forming Fe66Cr10Nb5B19 metallic glass coatings by detonation spraying and analyze the coating formation process. A partially amorphous Fe66Cr10Nb5B19 powder with particles ranging from 45 µm to 74 µm in diameter was used to deposit coatings on stainless steel substrates. The deposition process was studied for different explosive charges (fractions of the barrel volume filled with an explosive mixture (C2H2 + 1.1O2)). As the explosive charge was increased from 35% to 55%, the content of the crystalline phase in the coatings, as determined from the X-ray diffraction patterns, decreased. Coatings formed at explosive charges of 55−70% contained as little as 1 wt.% of the crystalline phase. In these coatings, nanocrystals in a metallic glass matrix were only rarely found; their presence was confined to some inter-splat boundaries. The particle velocities and temperatures at the exit of the barrel were calculated using a previously developed model. The particle temperatures increased as the explosive charge was increased from 35% to 70%; the particle velocities passed through maxima. The coatings acquire an amorphous structure as the molten particles rapidly solidify on the substrate; cooling rates of the splats were estimated. The Fe66Cr10Nb5B19 metallic glass coatings obtained at explosive changes of 55−60% showed low porosity (0.5−2.5%), high hardness (715−1025 HV), and high bonding strength to the substrate (150 MPa).

In the present work the effect of substituting Mo with Nb on the glass forming ability and corrosion resistance of Fe-Co-Cr-M-Si-B-Y (M=Mo, Nb) ribbons with high corrosion resistance is investigated. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern indicates that the alloy containing both Nb and Mo presented greater glass forming ability than the alloy containing either of these elements separately. The results obtained indicate that Mo is more effective in enhancing corrosion resistance than the Nb in 4.0 M HCl solution. The alloy containing both Nb and Mo presented greater overall corrosion resistance than the alloy containing only one of these elements.

In this paper we address some aspects of the kinetics of hydrogen absorption and desorption of Mg2FeH6 nanocomposite powder. The Mg2FeH6 material was prepared from a 2Mg-Fe composition by reactive milling under H2 pressure at room temperature. After mechano-chemical processing, the material was mainly constituted of Mg2FeH6 having a hydrogen gravimetric capacity corresponding to 94% of the theoretical capacity. The kinetics of hydrogen absorption at constant temperature and the transformation of phases during this process were studied. The kinetics of hydrogen absorption presented a two-step behaviour. First, β-MgH2 was formed with faster kinetics than Mg2FeH6 under constant temperature and H2 pressure. Then, β-MgH2 reacted with α-Fe forming Mg2FeH6 in a much slower reaction. Unexpectedly, reaction of hydrogen desorption showed an one-step kinetics, even if Mg2FeH6 and β-MgH2 phases were previously present in the powder.

Since the early 90's the oil industry has been encouraging the development of corrosion and wear resistant alloys for onshore and offshore pipeline applications. In this context supermartensitic stainless steel was introduced to replace the more expensive duplex stainless steel for tubing applications. Despite the outstanding corrosion resistance of stainless steels, their wear resistance is of concern. Some authors reported obtaining material processed by spray forming, such as ferritic stainless steel, superduplex stainless steel modified with boron, and iron-based amorphous alloys, which presented high wear resistance while maintaining the corrosion performance1,2. The addition of boron to iron-based alloys promotes the formation of hard boride particles (M2B type) which improve their wear resistances3-9. This work aimed to study the microstructure and wear resistance of supermartensitic stainless steel modified with 0.3 wt. (%) and 0.7 wt. (%) processed by spray forming (SF-SMSS 0.3%B and SF-SMSS 0.7%B, respectively). These boron contents were selected in order to improve the wear resistance of supermartensitic stainless steel through the formation of uniformly distributed borides maintaining the characteristics of the corrosion resistant matrix. SF-SMSS 0.7%B presents an abrasive wear resistance considerably higher than spray-formed supermartensitic stainless steel without boron addition (SF-SMSS).

MgH2 was processed by short time high-energy ball milling (BM) and cold rolling (CR). A new alternative processing route (CR + BM) using the combination of CR followed by short time BM step was also applied. The effects on the final morphology, crystalline structure and H-sorption properties were evaluated. The CR + BM processing (compared to BM and CR process) resulted in an inhomogeneous particle size distribution and the biggest crystallite size of MgH2, showing that there is a clear dependence between the size/shape of the particles which compose the starting material and the efficiency of crystallite size reduction during the BM process. On the other hand, we observed that a short BM step improved the kinetic properties of the cold rolled material. It shows that the particle size reduction of MgH2 obtained by CR combined with the increase in specific surface area attained by short BM step could be key factors to allow the use of the CR + BM route.

A mechanical spectroscopy study of Cu-Zr-Al bulk metallic glasses, was performed with two types of equipment: a Kê-type inverted torsion pendulum and an acoustic elastometer, working in the frequency ranges of Hz and kHz, respectively, with a heating rate of 1 K/min. The analysis of the anelastic relaxation shows similar spectra for both types of equipment resulting in internal friction patterns that vary with temperature and are not reproducible at each thermal cycle. The normalized of the square of the frequency changes from the first to later measurement cycles. These results indicate that the specimens of Cu-Zr-Al alloys were changing by mechanical relaxation, owing to the motion of atoms or clusters in the glassy state and possible "defects" produced during the processing of alloys.

The amorphous Cu46Zr42Al7Y5 alloy presents large supercooled liquid region (ΔT X = 100 K), with a viscosity of about 10(6) N.s/m² where the material can flow as a liquid, making it possible an easy deformation in this temperature region. The aim of this work was to analyze processing routes to produce bulks of metallic glasses. Two kinds of materials were used: amorphous powders and ribbons, both were consolidated by hot extrusion in temperatures inside the range between Tg and Tx, with a ram speed of 1 mm/min and extrusion ratio of 3 : 1. Analysis of X-Ray Diffratometry (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), revealed that the proposed consolidation routes were effective to produce large bulks of amorphous materials, even with the strong decreasing of ΔT X observed after deformation by milling and during extrusion.

In order to obtain quasicrystalline (QC) phase by mechanical alloying (MA) in the Al-Cu-Fe system, mixtures of elementary Al, Cu and Fe in the proportion of 65-20-15 (at. %) were produced by high energy ball milling (HEBM). A very high energy type mill (spex) and short milling times (up to 5 hours) were employed. The resulting powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). QC phase was not directly formed by milling under the conditions employed in this work. However, phase transformations identified by DSC analysis reveals that annealing after HEBM possibly results in the formation of the ψ QC phase.

A combination of an extension of the topological instability "λ criterion" and the "average electronegativity" has been recently reported in the literature to predict compositions with high glass-forming ability (GFA). In the present work, both criteria have been applied to select the Ni61.0Nb36.0B3 alloy with a high glass-forming ability. Ingots were prepared by arc-melting and were used to produce ribbons processed by the melt-spinning technique further characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Ni61.0Nb36.0B3 alloy revealed a complete amorphization and supercooled liquid region ΔTx = 68 K. In addition, wedge-shaped samples were prepared using copper mold casting in order to determine the critical thickness for amorphous formation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that fully amorphous samples could be obtained, reaching up to ~800 µm in thickness.

High strength AA7050 aluminum alloy was processed by ECAP through route A in the T7451 condition. Samples were processed at 423 K, with 1 and 3 passes. The resulting microstructure was evaluated by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The phases were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) using monochromatic Cu Kα radiation. Rockwell B hardness and tensile tests were performed for assessment of mechanical properties. The microstructure was refined by the formation of deformation bands, with dislocation cells and elongated subgrains, with an average width of 240 nm, inside these bands. The number of deformation bands increased with the number of passes. A reduction of precipitates size was observed with increase in the number of passes, when compared to initial condition, probably resulting from particle fragmentation during ECAP. After three passes the precipitates tend to a more equiaxed morphology and have sizes smaller than 10 nm. Phases Η' and Η coexist in the microstructure, but Η is the dominant phase, mainly after three passes. The hardness of alloy after the first pass of ECAP is almost equal to the initial condition. After three passes the hardness showed a slight reduction which must be result from recovery process. There was a slight improvement in the yield strength and elongation after one pass, when compared to the initial T7451 condition. The improvement in the ultimate tensile strength was less significant.

The ASTM F1295/Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy present mechanical properties and biocompatibility very attractive for application in medical and dental implants. In this context, processing of these Ti-based alloys by severe plastic deformation (SPD) has been extensively reported recently. However, the mechanical properties of equal channel angular pressed (ECAP) ASTM F1295 alloy are still a matter of research. In the present study, Ti-6Al-7Nb samples were processed by ECAP following thermomechanical processing which effects on the microstructure of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The analyses have shown that the microstructure was composed by ultrafine grains (UFG) with sizes ranging from 200 to 400 nm. Ring-type selected area electron diffraction patterns (SAEDP) suggested the co-existence of low- and high-angle grain boundaries. Some regions of the samples have presented evidences of the presence of grains with unfavorable orientation to the plastic deformation. These grains can act as rigid bodies and concentrate the deformation in its surrounding areas, as an "open-die grain" mechanism. Such deformation mechanism could be attributed to the differences in the plastic behavior between the alpha and beta titanium phases.

Severe plastic deformation routes (SPD) have been shown to be attractive for short time preparation of magnesium alloys for hydrogen storage, generating refined microstructures and interesting hydrogen storage properties when compared to the same materials processed by high-energy ball milling (HEBM), but with the benefit of higher air resistance. In this study, we present results of a new processing route for Mg alloys for hydrogen storage: rapid solidification followed by cold work. A Mg97Ni3 alloy was processed by melt spinning (MS) and by extensive cold rolling (CR). Submitting Mg97Ni3 ribbons between steel plates to cold rolling has shown to be a viable procedure, producing a thin cold welded foil, with little material waste. The as-processed material presents a high level of [002] fiber texture, a sub microcrystalline grain structure with a high density of defects, and also a fine dispersion of Mg2Ni nanoparticles. This refined microstructure allied to the developed texture resulted in enhanced activation and H-sorption kinetics properties.

An investigation was made of the stability of melt-spun ribbons of Mm55Al25Ni10Cu10 (Mm = Mischmetal) amorphous alloy. The structural transformations that occurred during heating were studied using a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Crystallization took place through a multi-stage process. The first stage of transformation corresponded to the formation of a metastable phase followed by cfc-Al precipitation, while in the second stage, exothermic transformations led to the formation of complex and unidentified Mm(Cu, Ni) and MmAl(Cu, Ni) phases. The transformation curves recorded from isothermal treatments at 226 °C and 232 °C indicated that crystallization occurred through nucleation and growth, with diffusion-controlled growth occurring in the first crystallization stage. The supercooled liquid region, ∆Tx, at 40 K/min was ~80 K. This value was obtained by the substitution of Mm (=Ce + La + Nd + Pr) for La or Ce, saving chemical element-related costs.

Ti-6Al-7Nb alloys are being evaluated for biomedical applications, in substitution of the more conventional Ti-6Al-7V. Both types of alloys present a microstructure containing the α and the β phases, which result in good compromise for mechanical applications. In the present work Ti-6Al-7Nb alloys were processed by High Pressure Torsion (HPT), varying the number of revolutions and thus the total imposed strain. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) results revealed the formation of different crystallographic textures in samples subjected to HPT. Microhardness distribution, across the diameters of the disks, is rather homogeneous for all samples, with higher values for those subjected to 03 and 05 turns. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs have showed that an ultra-fine grained microstructure was obtained in all the samples.

The effect of minor additions of Gd and Sm on the glass-forming ability (GFA) of Cu-Zr-Al alloys is investigated here. The rationale for these additions is the fact that the atomic size distribution can increase GFA by changing the topology of the alloy as a function of cluster stability, which is tied to the electronegativity and ionic and covalent nature of alloys. Ingots with nominal compositions of Cu40Zr49Al10.5Gd0.5, Cu40Zr49Al10.5Sm0.5 and Cu39Zr50Al9Gd2 were prepared by arc-melting and rapidly quenched ribbons were produced by the melt-spinning technique. Bulk samples with a thickness of up to 10 mm were also produced by casting, using a wedge-shaped copper mold. The samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. The three compositions showed a fully amorphous structure in the ribbons and a predominantly homogeneous amorphous structure with a thickness of up to 10 mm, although some gadolinium oxide crystals as well as samarium compounds were found to be scattered in the amorphous matrix in 5-mm-thick samples. The amorphous phases in the alloys showed high thermal stability with a supercooled liquid region (ΔTx) of about 70 K.

Recently, intermetallic compounds have attracted much attention due to their potential technological applications as high-temperature materials. In particular the intermetallic compounds, associated with the Al-Ni binary system stand out as promising candidates for high-temperature materials for the use in harsh environments. It is expected that a bulk Al-Ni alloy may exceed the strength of many commercial materials. The great challenge in developing these alloys is to manipulate the solidification thermal parameters in order to obtain the desired microstructural features. One of the indicated routes to obtain very refined intermetallic phases dispersed in the microstructure is the spray forming process. The dendritic and eutectic growth dependences on cooling rate are already known for directionally solidified (DS) hypoeutectic Al-Ni alloys. In the case of rapidly solidified (RS) samples, extrapolations of such experimental laws are needed, which can be very helpful to estimate realistic values of high cooling rates imposed during the spray forming process. The present study aims to compare directionally solidified and spray-formed Al-5wt. (%)Ni alloy samples with a view to providing a basis for understanding how to control solidification parameters and the as-cast microstructure. The Al-5.0wt. (%)Ni alloy was shown to have a cellular morphology for the overspray powder size range examined (up to 500 µm). The mean cell spacing decreased from 5.0 to 1.1 µm with the decrease in the powder average diameter. It was found that the experimental cooling rates imposed during the atomization step of the overspray powder solidification varied from 10³ to 2.10(4) K/s.
