Walter Benjamin and Walter Benjamin
- Abstract
Sprache: Deutsch/Englisch

- Abstract

- Abstract
Walter Rodney was an exceptional scholar-activist who not only interpreted the consequences of centuries of transatlantic slavery, colonialism and neocolonialism but also engaged in the struggles to change their racial, social and economic legacies. As these legacies persist into the twenty-first century, his life and writings remain profoundly relevant. He contributed to a distinctive intellectual blend of Black Power and Marxism, that had mass support in the movements of the 1960s and 1970s in the Caribbean and Africa. He had a capacity for listening to people which drew Rastafari youth activists and others to his “groundings”. When the Jamaican government banned him from returning to work at the University of the West Indies in October 1968, there was a mass upheaval, and these demonstrations stimulated the Black Power and socialist movements throughout the Caribbean. His most productive years were at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, where he taught development studies and wrote his seminal work, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa. A profound scholar of the history of the working people of his native Guyana, he embraced the democratic struggles of Africans and Indians. His radical activism and mass appeal as a leader of the Working People's Alliance in Guyana led President Forbes Burnham to have him assassinated.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Walter Lippmann was arguably the most recognized and respected political journalist of the twentieth century. His'Today and Tomorrow'columns attracted a global readership of well over ten million. Lippmann was the author of numerous books, including the best-selling A Preface to Morals (1929) and U.S. Foreign Policy (1943). His Public Opinion (1922) remains a classic text within American political philosophy and media studies. Lippmann coined or popularized several keywords of the twentieth century, including'stereotype,'the'Cold War,'and the'Great Society.'Sought out by U.S. Presidents and by America's allies and rivals around the world, Lippmann remained one of liberalism's most faithful proponents and harshest critics. Yet few people then or since encountered the'real'Walter Lippmann. That was because he kept crucial parts of himself hiding in plain sight. His extensive commentary on politics and diplomacy was bounded by his sense that America had to adjust to the loss of a common faith and morality in a'post-Christian'era. Over the course of his life, Lippmann traded in his fame as a happy secularist for the stardom of a grumpy Western Christian intellectual. Yet he never committed himself to any religious system, especially his own Jewish heritage. Walter Lippmann: American Skeptic, American Pastor considers the role of religions in Lippmann's life and thought, prioritizing his affirmation and rejection of Christian nationalisms of the left and right. It also yields fresh insights into the philosophical origins of modern American liberalism, including liberalism's blind spots in the areas of sex, race, and class. But most importantly, this biography highlights the constructive power of doubt. For Lippmann, the good life in the good society was lived in irreconcilable tension: the struggle to be free from yet loyal to a way of life; to recognize the dangers yet also necessity of a civil religion; and to strive for a just and enduring world order that can never be. In the end, Lippmann manufactured himself as the prophet of limitation for an extravagant American Century.

- Abstract

- Abstract

Walter Smith and Walter Smith
- Abstract
Walter the Younger is completely insecure, overweight, somewhat myopic, awkward, introspective, and intellectually troubled; an evolving amorphous blob, a forever nerd, unconditionally loved by delusional parents, simply trying to survive adolescence and move on.His story is told in small slices, describing events both real and not so real, but real enough to be overthought and overanalyzed by Walter's overactive psyche. Leaps into the future and past detail, quixotic adventures at college, on the golf course with his dad, at home with his not quite'All-American'family, and becoming a champion junior bowler. Walter is often thrust into the limelight in spite of trying to hide in the shadows.Just small scraps of time, these Walter slices are frequently interrupted by non-sequiturs, social diatribes, rants, discussion of scientific and otherworldly topics, glimpses into the multiverse, and other contrivances; simply digressions from a baseball story about Little League, and the craziness that ensued following the first time Walter took a swing at an incoming baseball. The Walter Integral, comprised of these slices and digressions, paints a not quite complete picture of a'not quite complete'Walter.

Walter Benjamin ,Violence ,Justice ,Divine Violence ,Anticipation - Abstract
In his “Critique of Violence,” Walter Benjamin seeks to rethink justice as the interruption of the juridical temporality, which is characterized by the relationship between means and ends. Benjamin imagines a form of violence that finds in itself its own criterion of rightness: divine violence emerges as a third kind of violence beyond both the state’s monopoly of violence and the binary opposition between violence and non-violence. I will read Benjamin in the historical-political context of the crisis of the state, democracy and parliamentarism in order to develop the idea of divine violence as a practice that interrupts the means-end relation and defends new forms of togetherness that are anticipated in the moment of a struggle.

- Abstract
This book is characterized as the result of an ethnomusicological and historical research by Recife musician Walter Wanderley (1932-1986), known as a representative of Bossa Nova. Organist, pianist, arranger and sporadic composer, Walter Wanderley has released dozens of records on record labels such as Odeon, Philips, the American company Verve and many others, both as an instrumentalist and arranger for singers and as solo instrumental albums. Even with such a robust record production, Walter Wanderley seems to have been forgotten by most records in the History of Brazilian Popular Music. This book tries to help understand how this success happened predominantly only outside his country of origin and the reasons why his name was practically omitted by historiography and by important references of Bossa Nova. As was his performance in other genres such as Samba, Bolero, Sambalanço and Sambajazz, which are much more present in his work than Bossa Nova itself, a genre for which the artist came to be labeled as representative, especially after his death. The book makes a contribution to the construction of knowledge for Ethnomusicology, Musicology and other areas of study of Brazilian Popular Music in its relations with the cultural industry and with the aspects between Memory and Forgetfulness.

This fascinating biography sets the record straight on a giant of the Labour movement... and contains many lessons for us today.'- Frances O'Grady, TUC General Secretary'Like many trade unionists, Walter Citrine was crucial to my education. A major political figure of the 20th century, Citrine deserves the great biography that Jim Moher has given him.'- Alan Johnson, former Home Secretary and union leader The forgotten story of a Liverpool lad who rose from the squalor of Edwardian Merseyside's bustling docks to become the confidant of Churchill and Roosevelt as leader of Britain's trade unions during the Second World War. Walter Citrine's life spanned the late-nineteenth and most of the twentieth centuries. During his leadership of the Trades Union Congress, the unions progressed from impotent grandstanding to effective lobbying, influencing governments and employers to transform deplorable working conditions and elevate the worker's place in society. Through Citrine's life, readers will revisit the key historical episodes in which his work was so influential - the General Strike of 1926, the'Great Depression'of 1928-34, the rise of Hitler and Fascism, the challenge of Stalin and Communism, the Second World War and the reconstruction afterwards. At a time when trade unions are once again being consulted by governments on their plans to revive the economy, never has Citrine's story been so relevant.

This article depicts the heat and mass transport of the double-diffusive convective flow of Walter-B viscoelastic fluid in highly permeable porous media with an internal heat source. We used weakly nonlinear analysis to quantify the nature of heat and mass transport using the Ginzburg–Landau equation. The Ginzburg–Landau equation has been derived in terms of the amplitude of the stream function. The effect of physical parameters has been examined on Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, which has represented graphically. According to the boundary condition, we have discussed the four scenarios based on the phase angles. Our study has demonstrated that internal heat plays a significant role in heat transfer processes. Furthermore, the elastic parameter leads to a transient augmentation in the heat and mass transfer rate. The main output of the current study is that the highest transport was found when both the modulations were put in out-phase condition (Scenario 1).

- Abstract
Walter'Smokey'Alston is best known for his long and successful tenure as manager of the Dodgers--first in Brooklyn, then in Los Angeles. Yet few fans are aware of his years in the minors, where he honed the skills that would make him famous. Raised in rural Ohio, Alston graduated from Miami University, where he was noticed by scouts for the St. Louis Cardinals. Signed in 1935, he played on minor league teams in the Cardinals'system. He went to bat in the majors just once--and struck out. But Cardinals President Branch Rickey recognized other talents in Alston and made him a player-manager for several clubs. He steadily produced winning teams and in 1946 led the racially integrated Nashua'Little'Dodgers to a championship. In 1953, he was tapped to run the big club and over the next 23 seasons led the Dodgers to nine pennants and four World Series wins. This book traces Alston's rise through the minor and major leagues to become a Hall of Famer with more than 2000 career wins.

37. Affirming Educative Violence: Walter Benjamin on Divine Violence and Schooling
- Author

- Abstract
In his 'Towards the Critique of Violence', Walter Benjamin introduces the concept of 'educative violence' as a contemporary manifestation of 'divine violence'. In this paper, we aim to interpret 'educative violence' by examining other instances where the young Benjamin addresses pedagogical issues. By connecting the concept of divine violence to Benjamin's ideas of education in tradition and of the schooling of Geist, our goal is twofold: firstly, to comprehend the productive role that violence may play in the pedagogical context, and secondly, to apply it to the conception of schooling presented by Jan Masschelein and Maarten Simons to highlight its relevance to school education. By linking scholastic violence to divine violence, we argue that schools must be defended not despite but because of the violence they inhere. In doing so, we contribute another layer to the defense of the school and offer fresh insights into Benjamin's notion of divine violence.

- Abstract

47. What if Walter Gropius Were a Woman: Alternative Design History Teaching Experiment
- Author

- Abstract
As one of the most literary and transdisciplinary cultural practices, speculative design has become one of the best mediums for discussing emerging technologies, the Anthropocene and the ecological crisis. When design history is merely perceived as established knowledge about the past and fails to engage in dialogue with reality or individual interaction, it often struggles to inspire students' agency in learning and willingness to deep involvement in research. Alternative design history, however, serves as a type and method of historiography that actively constructs history and alternatively imagines the past. It aims to situate historical knowledge as the context for design problem exploration rather than an end goal of education. This approach guides educators and learners to co-speculate on historical design knowledge. By 'reversing' specific elements of historical experience, such as gender mentioned in this article, and employing alternative imagination to form what-if scenarios and pose inquiries about existing historical facts, a distinct form of 'counterfactual history' emerges that diverges notably from traditional design history. Throughout speculation within 'counterfactual history', students can distinguish between historical facts and realities, which enables students to comprehend the construction of historical knowledge, the individuality of historical narratives, and the standpoint of historical discourse. In this way, it helps students cultivate a historical interest that 'starts from the self', guiding them to foster resilient historical thinking and a critical awareness of reality.

- Abstract
An original, compelling, and visually stunning treatment of a common childhood predicament: overcoming a fear of the water. Lottie goes to swim lessons every Saturday, but she never gets in the water. That's because she is convinced there is a shark in the pool, a shark that wants to eat her and only her. But then Walter appears. Walter likes singing and reading books and bubble baths, and his favorite food is fish sticks, just like Lottie. When Saturday rolls around again, Lottie is no more ready to jump in the pool than she was before. Or is she? Sometimes it just takes a special friend to find the courage that was inside you all along.

- Abstract
In the 1880s and 1890s, Walter Besant was one of Britain's most lionized living novelists. Like many popular writers of the period, Besant suffered from years of critical neglect. Yet his centrality to Victorian society and culture all but ensured a revival of interest. While literary critics are now rediscovering the more than forty works of fiction that he penned or co-wrote, as part of a more general revaluation of Victorian popular literature, legal scholars have argued that Besant, by advocating for copyright reform, played a crucial role in consolidating a notion of literary property as the exclusive possession of the individuated intellect. For their part, historians have recently shown how Besant – as a prominent philanthropist who campaigned for the cultural vitalization of impoverished areas in east and south London – galvanized late Victorian social reform activities. The expanding corpus of work on Besant, however, has largely kept the domains of authorship and activism, which he perceived as interrelated, conceptually distinct. Analysing the mutually constitutive interplay in Besant's career between philanthropy and the professionalization of authorship, Walter Besant: The Business of Literature and the Pleasures of Reform highlights their fundamental interconnectedness in this Victorian intellectual polymath's life and work.
