The L2,3-edge X-ray absorption spectra of late transition metals such as Cu, Ag, and Au exhibit absorption onsets lower in energy for higher oxidation states, which is at odds with the measured spectra of earlier transition metals. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations for Cu2+/Cu+ reveal a larger 2p core-exciton binding energy for Cu2+, overshadowing shifts in single-particle excitation energies with respect to Cu+. We explore this phenomenon in a Cu+ metal-organic framework with ∼12% Cu2+ defects and find that corrections with self-consistent excited-state total energy differences provide accurate XAS peak alignment.

Solid-state electrolytes overcome many challenges of present-day lithium ion batteries, such as safety hazards and dendrite formation1,2. However, detailed understanding of the involved lithium dynamics is missing due to a lack of in operando measurements with chemical and interfacial specificity. Here we investigate a prototypical solid-state electrolyte using linear and nonlinear extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopies. Leveraging the surface sensitivity of extreme-ultraviolet-second-harmonic-generation spectroscopy, we obtained a direct spectral signature of surface lithium ions, showing a distinct blueshift relative to bulk absorption spectra. First-principles simulations attributed the shift to transitions from the lithium 1 s state to hybridized Li-s/Ti-d orbitals at the surface. Our calculations further suggest a reduction in lithium interfacial mobility due to suppressed low-frequency rattling modes, which is the fundamental origin of the large interfacial resistance in this material. Our findings pave the way for new optimization strategies to develop these electrochemical devices via interfacial engineering of lithium ions.

Multiple American educational organizations such as the National Education Association, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the Council of Chief State School Officers have advocated for globalizing the K-12 curriculum. The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) in a position statement on international education and the Next Generation Science Standards have produced goals and standards for internationalizing the science curriculum by addressing topics such as climate change, environment, and disease that cross borders. In contrast to those pronouncements on the curriculum, this article views global science education through an instructional lens that focuses on a students' global interdependence in science continuum allowing researchers and casual observers to classify science classroom activities into one of five stages based on the interdependence during instruction of students in two or more countries. At the continuum's lowest stage labeled isolated, instruction is contained within a classroom with students having no interaction with students in another country. At the highest end called collaborate, students in two or more countries are working jointly to co-create a solution to the task before them. This science education continuum can also be used to categorize technology and engineering activities and could be adapted for use in other curricular areas including mathematics, language arts, and social studies, used as a tool to complement scholarship about a range of education topics from social justice to curriculum to student motivation, or inform pre- and in-service teacher education.

The cornerstone of the reverse chemical ecology approach is the identification of odorant receptors (OR) sensitive to compounds in a large panel of odorants. In this approach, we de-orphanize ORs and, subsequently, measure behaviors elicited by these semiochemicals. After that, we evaluate behaviorally active compounds for applications in insect vector management. Intriguingly, multiple ORs encoded by genes highly expressed in mosquito antennae do not respond to any test odorant. One such case is CquiOR125 from the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus Say. To better understand CquiOR125's role in Culex mosquito olfaction, we have cloned a CquiOR125 orthologue in the genome of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.), AaegOR11. Unlike the unresponsive nature of the orthologue in Cx. quinquefasciatus, oocytes co-expressing AaegOR11 and AaegOrco elicited robust responses when challenged with fenchone, 2,3-dimethylphenol, 3,4-dimethylphenol, 4-methycyclohexanol, and acetophenone. Interestingly, AaegOR11 responded strongly and equally to (+)- and (-)-fenchone, with no chiral discrimination. Contrary to reports in the literature, fenchone did not show any repellency activity against Ae. aegypti or Cx. quinquefasciatus. Laboratory and field tests did not show significant increases in egg captures in cups filled with fenchone solutions compared to control cups. The second most potent ligand, 2,3-dimethylphenol, showed repellency activity stronger than that elicited by DEET at the same dose. We, therefore, concluded that AaegOR11 is a mosquito repellent sensor. It is feasible that CquiOR125 responds to repellents that remain elusive.

The interaction of intense light with matter gives rise to competing nonlinear responses that can dynamically change material properties. Prominent examples are saturable absorption (SA) and two-photon absorption (TPA), which dynamically increase and decrease the transmission of a sample depending on pulse intensity, respectively. The availability of intense soft X-ray pulses from free-electron lasers (FELs) has led to observations of SA and TPA in separate experiments, leaving open questions about the possible interplay between and relative strength of the two phenomena. Here, we systematically study both phenomena in one experiment by exposing graphite films to soft X-ray FEL pulses of varying intensity. By applying real-time electronic structure calculations, we find that for lower intensities the nonlinear contribution to the absorption is dominated by SA attributed to ground-state depletion; our model suggests that TPA becomes more dominant for larger intensities (>1014 W/cm2). Our results demonstrate an approach of general utility for interpreting FEL spectroscopies.

It is our contention that we are in a crisis of curriculum that can be seen from calls to defund public education to the reduction of children to scores on annual assessments. We also point to a crisis in studies of curriculum that the critical tools necessary to consider and critique curricular practices have been intentionally removed from schools of education. Our argument begins with a discussion of the potential significance for curriculum studies that focuses on questions of history and voice, and of resonances. In the light of such resonances and the ecologies where educational understandings reside, the second section of our paper examines the possibilities and challenges for curricular tools, as applicable in everyday interactions as they are in the more structured educational ecologies of schooling. We then apply such contextualized understandings to a formal curriculum espoused by an elite U.S. university in order to better articulate both what curriculum studies can do and why curriculum remains such a significant aspect of our understanding. Our work ends with a brief concluding section that suggests what else the curriculum might do and the kinds of things we are concerned are increasingly overlooked, from historical knowledge to contemporary cultural expressions.

The process of identifying suitable genome-wide association (GWA) studies and formatting the data to calculate multiple polygenic risk scores on a single genome can be laborious. Here, we present a centralized polygenic risk score calculator currently containing over 250,000 genetic variant associations from the NHGRI-EBI GWAS Catalog for users to easily calculate sample-specific polygenic risk scores with comparable results to other available tools. Polygenic risk scores are calculated either online through the Polygenic Risk Score Knowledge Base (PRSKB; https://prs.byu.edu ) or via a command-line interface. We report study-specific polygenic risk scores across the UK Biobank, 1000 Genomes, and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), contextualize computed scores, and identify potentially confounding genetic risk factors in ADNI. We introduce a streamlined analysis tool and web interface to calculate and contextualize polygenic risk scores across various studies, which we anticipate will facilitate a wider adaptation of polygenic risk scores in future disease research.

The insect repellent methyl salicylate elicits excitatory responses upon interaction with CquiOR32, an odorant receptor (OR) from the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus. By contrast, eucalyptol binds to CquiOR32 to generate electrophysiological and behavioral inhibitory responses. In an attempt to identify CquiOR32 variants displaying more robust inhibitory responses for more accurate current-voltage analysis, we sequenced 31 CquiOR32 clones. In the Xenopus oocyte recording system, CquiOR32V2/CquiOrco-expressing oocytes yielded eucalyptol-elicited outward (inhibitory) currents relatively larger than methyl salicylate-generated inward (excitatory) currents. Rescuing experiments showed that two of the amino acid substitutions in CquiOR32V2 located in a predicted transmembrane helix of the receptor are determinants of the outward/inward ratios. These findings, along with co-stimulus assays, suggest that odorant and inhibitor may bind to the same binding pocket. Current-voltage relationships obtained with standard perfusion buffer and those devoid of Na+ or Cl- indicated that both excitatory and inhibitory currents are mediated, at least in part, by cation. We then concluded that eucalyptol is an inverse agonist, which shifts the open ⇔ closed equilibrium of the receptor toward the closed conformation, thus reducing the spontaneous activity. By contrast, the binding of methyl salicylate shifts the equilibrium towards the open conformation and, consequently, leads to an increase in cation influx.

Previously, we have identified an odorant receptor (OR) from the southern house mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus, CquiOR32, which responded to both odorants (agonists) and inhibitory compounds (antagonists). CquiOR32/CquiOrco-expressing oocytes responded to methyl salicylate and other odorants with inward (regular) currents but gave currents in the reverse direction when challenged with eucalyptol and other inhibitors. To determine whether hitherto unknown ORs show this intrareceptor inhibition, we have now examined two other receptors in the same cluster, CquiOR27 and CquiOR28. We cloned and tested four variants of CquiOR28, but none of the 250 compounds in our panel of odorants, including an Orco ligand candidate (OLC12), elicited inward or upward deflections of the current traces. By contrast, CquiOR27/CquiOrco-expressing oocytes gave robust, dose-dependent inward currents when challenged with γ-octalactone and other odorants. On the other hand, octylamine and other phenolic compounds elicited dose-dependent currents in the reverse direction. When stimulatory and inhibitory compounds were presented in binary mixtures, γ-octalactone-elicited inward currents were attenuated in a dose-dependent manner according to the concentration of octylamine. As part of our chemical ecology approach, we tested the repellency activity of the most potent ligands in the surface landing and feeding assay and a newly reported hand-in cage assay. Protection elicited by γ-octalactone did not differ significantly from that of DEET at the same dose. In the hand-in cage assay, a cream formulation of γ-octalactone showed 97.0 ± 1.3% protection, with 47.6 ± 8.3% and 1.4 ± 0.7% landings per trial in the hands covered with a control and γ-octalactone cream, respectively (N = 8, p = 0.0078, Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test).
