The Near-Earth binary asteroid Didymos was the target of a planetary defense demonstration mission DART in September 2022. The smaller binary component, Dimorphos, was impacted by the spacecraft in order to measure momentum transfer in kinetic impacts into rubble piles. DART and associated Earth-based observation campaigns have provided a wealth of scientific data on the Didymos-Dimorphos binary. DART revealed a largely oblate and ellipsoidal shape of Dimorphos before the impact, while the post-impact observations suggest that Dimorphos now has a prolate shape. Here we add those data points to the known properties of small binary asteroids and propose new paradigms of the radiative binary YORP (BYORP) effect as well as tidal dissipation in small binaries. We find that relatively spheroidal bodies like Dimorphos made of small debris may experience a weaker and more size-dependent BYORP effect than previously thought. This could explain the observed values of period drift in several well-characterized binaries. We also propose that energy dissipation in small binaries is dominated by relatively brief episodes of large-scale movement of (likely surface) materials, rather than long-term steady-state tidal dissipation. We propose that one such episode was triggered on Dimorphos by the DART impact. Depending on the longevity of this high-dissipation regime, it is possible that Dimorphos will be more dynamically relaxed in time for the Hera mission than it was in the weeks following the impact., Comment: Accepted for PSJ

In our recent work, we combined dynamical simulations, meteoritic data and thermal models as well as asteroid observations to argue that the current parent body of the EL meteorites was implanted into the asteroid belt not earlier than 60 Myr after the beginning of the Solar System and that the most likely capture mechanism was the giant planet orbital instability. In the study "The link between Athor and EL meteorites does not constrain the timing of the giant planet instability" that appeared in arXiv, Izidoro and collaborators argue that the implantation of Athor into the asteroid belt does not necessarily require that the giant planet orbital instability occurred at the implantation time. The main asteroid belt (MAB) is known to be primarily composed of objects from two distinct taxonomic classes, generically defined here as S- and C-complex. The former probably originated from the inner solar system (interior to Jupiter's orbit), while the latter probably from the outer solar system. Following this definition, (4) Vesta, a V-type residing in the inner MAB (a < 2.5 au), is the sole D > 500 km object akin to S-complex that potentially formed in-situ. This provides a useful constraint on the number of D > 500 km bodies that could have formed, or grown, within the primordial MAB. In this work we numerically simulate the accretion of objects in the MAB region during the time when gas in the protoplanetary disk still existed, while assuming different MAB primordial masses. We then accounted for the depletion of that population happening after gas disk dispersal. In our analysis, we subdivided the MAB into five sub-regions and showed that the depletion factor varies throughout the MAB. This results in uneven radial- and size-dependent depletion of the MAB. We show that the MAB primordial mass has to be $\lesssim$ 2.14$\times$10$^{-3}$ Earth masses. Larger primordial masses would lead to the accretion of tens-to-thousands of S-complex objects with D > 500 km in the MAB. Such large objects would survive depletion even in the outer sub-regions (a > 2.5 au), thus being inconsistent with observations. Our results also indicate that S-complex objects with D > 200-300 km, including (4) Vesta, are likely to be terrestrial planetesimals implanted into the MAB rather than formed in-situ., Comment: Accepted for publication in PSJ, 23 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Numerical modeling has long suggested that gravitationally-bound (or so-called rubble-pile) near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) can be destroyed by tidal forces during close and slow encounters with terrestrial planets. However, tidal disruptions of NEAs have never been directly observed nor have they been directly attributed to any families of NEAs. Here we show population-level evidence for the tidal disruption of NEAs during close encounters with the Earth and Venus. Debiased model distributions of NEA orbits and absolute magnitudes based on observations by the Catalina Sky Survey during 2005--2012 underpredict the number of NEAs with perihelion distances coinciding with the semimajor axes of Venus and the Earth. A detailed analysis of the orbital distributions of the excess NEAs shows that their characteristics agree with the prediction for tidal disruptions, and they cannot be explained by observational selection effects or orbital dynamics. Accounting for tidal disruptions in evolutionary models of the NEA population partly bridges the gap between the predicted rate of impacts by asteroids with diameters of tens of meters and observed statistics of fireballs in the same size range., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present an approach for the inclusion of non-spherical constituents in high-resolution N-body discrete element method (DEM) simulations. We use aggregates composed of bonded spheres to model non-spherical components. Though the method may be applied more generally, we detail our implementation in the existing N-body code pkdgrav. It has long been acknowledged that non-spherical grains confer additional shear strength and resistance to flow when compared with spheres. As a result, we expect that rubble-pile asteroids will also exhibit these properties and may behave differently than comparable rubble piles composed of idealized spheres. Since spherical particles avoid some significant technical challenges, most DEM gravity codes have used only spherical particles, or have been confined to relatively low resolutions. We also discuss the work that has gone into improving performance with non-spherical grains, building on pkdgrav's existing leading-edge computational efficiency among DEM gravity codes. This allows for the addition of non-spherical shapes while maintaining the efficiencies afforded by pkdgrav's tree implementation and parallelization. As a test, we simulated the gravitational collapse of 25,000 non-spherical bodies in parallel. In this case, the efficiency improvements allowed for an increase in speed by nearly a factor of three when compared with the naive implementation. Without these enhancements, large runs with non-spherical components would remain prohibitively expensive. Finally, we present the results of several small-scale tests: spinup due to the YORP effect, tidal encounters, and the Brazil-nut Effect. Near-Earth asteroids Ryugu and Bennu, were visited, characterised, and sampled by the Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx missions: remote sensing data and sample return analysis showed that both asteroids have primitive, hydrated and organic-rich compositions. The dark families of the inner main belt (IMB) that belong to the spectroscopic C-complex have been claimed to be the sources of both Ryugu and Bennu. Hence, there has been large effort to characterise them. Here we used the Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) asteroid reflectance spectra to investigate the 11 known IMB C-complex families (Chaldaea, Chimaera, Clarissa, Erigone, Eulalia, Klio, Polana, Primordial, Sulamitis, Svea, Tamara). For each family, we extracted the family members that have known geometric visible albedo values and Gaia DR3 data and we created an average reflectance spectrum per family between 370 and 950 nm. The average DR3 reflectance spectra of each family were compared with the previous literature data and to Bennu's and Ryugu's spectra. We found that DR3 reflectance spectra of the IMB C-complex families are in general consistent with previous findings with the only exception of the Svea family. We also showed that the Polana and the Eulalia families can be distinguished in the wavelength region 370 - 500 nm. Among all the IMB C-complex families, we determined that the average reflectance spectra of the Eulalia and Polana families are the most similar to those of Bennu and Ryugu, respectively. In particular, Eulalia family's average spectrum is a good match to Bennu's in the wavelength range 450 - 800 nm, while beyond 800 nm the spectrum of Bennu is bluer than that of Eulalia. Moreover, the spectrum of the Polana family has the smallest discrepancy against the spectrum of Ryugu, although this match is formally unsatisfactory (reduced chi^2 ~ 1.9)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Polluted white dwarfs offer a unique way to study the bulk compositions of exoplanetary material, but it is not always clear if this material originates from comets, asteroids, moons, or planets. We combine N-body simulations with an analytical model to assess the prevalence of extrasolar moons as white dwarf (WD) polluters. Using a sample of observed polluted white dwarfs we find that the extrapolated parent body masses of the polluters are often more consistent with those of many solar system moons, rather than solar-like asteroids. We provide a framework for estimating the fraction of white dwarfs currently undergoing observable moon accretion based on results from simulated white dwarf planetary and moon systems. Focusing on a three-planet white dwarf system of Super-Earth to Neptune-mass bodies, we find that we could expect about one percent of such systems to be currently undergoing moon accretions as opposed to asteroid accretion., Comment: Submitted to AAS journals, comments welcome

Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus and Sulfur (CHNOPS) play key roles in the origin and proliferation of life on Earth. Given the universality of physics and chemistry, not least the ubiquity of water as a solvent and carbon as a backbone of complex molecules, CHNOPS are likely crucial to most habitable worlds. To help guide and inform the search for potentially habitable and ultimately inhabited environments, we begin by summarizing the CHNOPS budget of various reservoirs on Earth, their role in shaping our biosphere, and their origins in the Solar Nebula. We then synthesize our current understanding of how these elements behave and are distributed in diverse astrophysical settings, tracing their journeys from synthesis in dying stars to molecular clouds, protoplanetary settings, and ultimately temperate rocky planets around main sequence stars. Most close-in planetary satellites are in synchronous rotation, which is usually the stable end-point of tidal despinning. Saturn's moon Hyperion is a notable exception by having a chaotic rotation. Hyperion's dynamical state is a consequence of its high eccentricity and its highly prolate shape (Wisdom et al. 1984). As many binary asteroids also have elongated secondaries, chaotic rotation is expected for moons in eccentric binaries (\'Cuk and Nesvorn\'y, 2010), and a minority of asteroidal secondaries may be in that state (Pravec et al. 2016). The question of secondary rotation is also important for the action of the BYORP effect, which can quickly evolve orbits of synchronous (but not non-synchronous) secondaries (\'Cuk and Burns, 2005). Here we report results of a large set of short numerical simulations which indicate that, apart from synchronous and classic chaotic rotation, close-in irregularly-shaped asteroidal secondaries can occupy an additional, intermediate rotational state. In this ``barrel instability'' the secondary slowly rolls along its long axis, while the longest axis is staying largely aligned with the primary-secondary line. This behavior may be more difficult to detect through lightcurves than a fully chaotic rotation, but would likewise shut down BYORP. We show that the binary's eccentricity, separation measured in secondary's radii and the secondary's shape are all important for determining whether the system settles in synchronous rotation, chaotic tumbling, or barrel instability. We compare our results for synthetic asteroids with known binary pairs to determine which of these behaviors may be present in the Near-Earth Asteroid binary population., Comment: Accepted for PSJ

Following the break up of a parent body, the Yarkovsky effect causes asteroid family members to spread in orbital semimajor axis with a rate often inversely proportional to their diameter. This size dependent semimajor axis drift causes family members to form structures in the semimajor axis vs inverse diameter plane that have the shape of the letter V. The V-shape method consists in finding the borders of such V-shapes of unknown center and opening. Although successfully employed to find some very old families in the inner main asteroid belt, the V-shape searching method is very sensitive to many parameters. In this work, we first created and evolved a synthetic asteroid family over billions of years. Then, by adding uncertainties to semimajor axis and diameter of the evolved synthetic family components, we randomly generated additional 99 similar, but not perfectly V-shaped, family clones. We chose a fairly low initial velocity dispersion of 20 m/s for our family. Thus, we can more easily relate the spreading in semimajor axis with the family's age (slope of the evolving V). A synthetic background with an initially randomly distributed components was also created and evolved for 100 Myr. Thus, by setting different levels of ratio of the synthetic family and background asteroids, we derived a detection efficiency map for the V-shape method and determined how sensitive the results can be based on signal-to-noise levels. We also determined optimal parameter values for the method's efficiency. We found that, families older than ~3 Gyr are likely undetectable, with a method efficiency of 50% or less, whereas younger families (0.5--2.5 Gyr) are more easily detected by the method, with an efficiency of >80%., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in Icarus

Proximity observations by OSIRIS-REx and Hayabusa2 provided clues on the shape evolution processes of the target asteroids, (101955) Bennu and (162173) Ryugu. Their oblate shapes with equatorial ridges, or the so-called top shapes, may have evolved due to their rotational conditions at present and in the past. Different shape evolution scenarios were previously proposed; Bennu's top shape may have been driven by surface processing, while Ryugu's may have been developed due to large deformation. These two scenarios seem to be inconsistent. Here, we revisit the structural analyses in earlier works and fill a gap to connect these explanations. We also apply a semi-analytical technique for computing the cohesive strength distribution in a uniformly rotating triaxial ellipsoid to characterize the global failure of top-shaped bodies. Assuming that the structure is uniform, our semi-analytical approach describes the spatial variations in failed regions at different spin periods; surface regions are the most sensitive at longer spin periods, while interiors fail structurally at shorter spin periods. This finding suggests that the shape evolution of a top shape may vary due to rotation and internal structure, which can explain the different evolution scenarios of Bennu's and Ryugu's top shapes. In 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto and its moon Charon, providing the first clear look at the surface of Charon. New Horizons images revealed an ancient surface, a large, intricate canyon system, and many fractures, among other geologic features. Here, we assess whether tidal stresses played a significant role in the formation of tensile fractures on Charon. Although presently in a circular orbit, most scenarios for the orbital evolution of Charon include an eccentric orbit for some period of time and possibly an internal ocean. Past work has shown that these conditions could have generated stresses comparable in magnitude to other tidally fractured moons, such as Europa and Enceladus. However, we find no correlation between observed fracture orientations and those predicted to form due to eccentricity-driven tidal stress. It thus seems more likely that the orbit of Charon circularized before its ocean froze, and that either tidal stresses alone were insufficient to fracture the surface or subsequent resurfacing remove these ancient fractures., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Recent dynamical analyses suggest that some Jupiter family comets (JFCs) may originate in the main asteroid belt instead of the outer solar system. This possibility is particularly interesting given evidence that icy main-belt objects are known to be present in the Themis asteroid family. We report results from dynamical analyses specifically investigating the possibility that icy Themis family members could contribute to the observed population of JFCs. Numerical integrations show that such dynamical evolution is indeed possible via a combination of eccentricity excitation apparently driven by the nearby 2:1 mean-motion resonance with Jupiter, gravitational interactions with planets other than Jupiter, and the Yarkovsky effect. We estimate that, at any given time, there may be tens of objects from the Themis family on JFC-like orbits with the potential to mimic active JFCs from the outer solar system, although not all, or even any, may necessarily be observably active. We find that dynamically evolved Themis family objects on JFC-like orbits have semimajor axes between 3.15 au and 3.40 au for the vast majority of their time on such orbits, consistent with the strong role that the 2:1 mean-motion resonance with Jupiter likely plays in their dynamical evolution. We present numerical simulations of terrestrial planet formation that examine the growth continuously from planetesimals to planets in the inner Solar System. Previous studies show that the growth will be inside-out, but it is still common practice to assume that the entire inner disk will eventually reach a bi-modal distribution of embryos and planetesimals. For the combinations of disk mass, initial planetesimal radius and gas disk lifetime explored in this work the entire disk never reaches a simple bi-modal mass distribution. We find that the inside-out growth is amplified by the combined effects of collisional evolution of solid bodies and interactions with a dissipating gas disk. This leads to oligarchic growth never being achieved in different places of the disk at the same time, where in some cases the disk can simultaneoulsy support chaotic growth and giant impacts inside 1 au and runaway growth beyond 2 au. The planetesimal population is efficiently depleted in the inner disk where embryo growth primarily advances in the presence of a significant gas disk. Further out in the disk growth is slower relative to the gas disk dissipation, resulting in more excited planetesimals at the same stage of growth and less efficient accretion. This same effect drives mass loss due to collisional grinding strongly altering the surface density of the accreted planets relative to the initial mass distribution. This effect decreases the Mars-to-Earth mass ratios compared to previous works with no collisional grinding. Similar to some previous findings utilizing vastly different growth scenarios these simulations produce a first generation of planetary embryos that are stable for 10-20 Myr, or 5-10 e-folding times of the gas dissipation timescale, before having an instability and entering the chaotic growth stage., Comment: 17 figures

The solar system's dynamical state can be explained by an orbital instability among the giant planets. A recent model has proposed that the giant planet instability happened during terrestrial planet formation. This scenario has been shown to match the inner solar system by stunting Mars' growth and preventing planet formation in the asteroid belt. Here we present a large sample of new simulations of the "Early Instability" scenario. We use an N-body integration scheme that accounts for collisional fragmentation, and also perform a large set of control simulations that do not include an early giant planet instability. Since the total particle number decreases slower when collisional fragmentation is accounted for, the growing planets' orbits are damped more strongly via dynamical friction and encounters with small bodies that dissipate angular momentum (eg: hit-and-run impacts). Compared with simulations without collisional fragmentation, our fully evolved systems provide better matches to the solar system's terrestrial planets in terms of their compact mass distribution and dynamically cold orbits. Collisional processes also tend to lengthen the dynamical accretion timescales of Earth analogs, and shorten those of Mars analogs. This yields systems with relative growth timescales more consistent with those inferred from isotopic dating. The moniker rubble pile is typically applied to all solar system bodies with Diameter between 200m and 10km - where in this size range there is an abundance of evidence that nearly every object is bound primarily by self-gravity with significant void space or bulk porosity between irregularly shaped constituent particles. The understanding of this population is derived from wide-ranging population studies of derived shape and spin, decades of observational studies in numerous wavelengths, evidence left behind from impacts on planets and moons and the in situ study of a few objects via spacecraft flyby or rendezvous. The internal structure, however, which is responsible for the name rubble pile, is never directly observed, but belies a violent history. Using numerical integrations, we find that the orbital eccentricity of Saturn's moon Iapetus undergoes prominent multi-Myr oscillations. We identify the responsible resonant argument to be $\varpi-\varpi_{g5}+\Omega-\Omega_{eq}$, with the terms being the longitudes of pericenter of Iapetus and planetary secular mode $g_5$, Iapetus's longitude of the node and Saturn's equinox. We find that this argument currently (on a $10^7$~yr timescale) appears to librate with a very large amplitude. On longer timescales, the behavior of this resonant angle is strongly dependent on the resonant interaction between Saturn's spin axis and the planetary mode $f_8$, with long-term secular resonance being possible if Saturn's equinox is librating relative to the node of the $f_8$ eigenmode. We present analytical estimates of the dependence of the resonant argument on the orbital elements of Iapetus. We find that this Iapetus-$g_5$ secular resonance could have been established only after the passage of Iapetus through the 5:1 mean-motion resonance with Titan, possibly in the last Gyr. Using numerical simulations, we show that the capture into the secular resonance appears to be a low-probability event. While the Iapetus-$g_5$ secular resonance can potentially help us put new constraints on the past dynamics of the Saturnian system, uncertainties in both the spin axis dynamics of Saturn and the tidal evolution rate of Titan make it impossible to make any firm conclusions about the resonance's longevity and origin., Comment: Accepted for MNRAS

Many dynamical aspects of the solar system can be explained by the outer planets experiencing a period of orbital instability sometimes called the Nice Model. Though often correlated with a perceived delayed spike in the lunar cratering record known as the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB), recent work suggests that this event may have occurred much earlier; perhaps during the epoch of terrestrial planet formation. While current simulations of terrestrial accretion can reproduce many observed qualities of the solar system, replicating the small mass of Mars requires modification to standard planet formation models. Here we use 800 dynamical simulations to show that an early instability in the outer solar system strongly influences terrestrial planet formation and regularly yields properly sized Mars analogs. Our most successful outcomes occur when the terrestrial planets evolve an additional 1-10 million years (Myr) following the dispersal of the gas disk, before the onset of the giant planet instability. In these simulations, accretion has begun in the Mars region before the instability, but the dynamical perturbation induced by the giant planets' scattering removes large embryos from Mars' vicinity. Large embryos are either ejected or scattered inward toward Earth and Venus (in some cases to deliver water), and Mars is left behind as a stranded embryo. Asteroid (162173) Ryugu is the target object of Hayabusa2, an asteroid exploration and sample return mission led by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Ground-based observations indicate that Ryugu is a C-type near-Earth asteroid with a diameter of less than 1 km, but the knowledge of its detailed properties is still very limited. This paper summarizes our best understanding of the physical and dynamical properties of Ryugu based on remote sensing and theoretical modeling. This information is used to construct a design reference model of the asteroid that is used for formulation of mission operations plans in advance of asteroid arrival. Particular attention is given to the surface properties of Ryugu that are relevant to sample acquisition. This reference model helps readers to appropriately interpret the data that will be directly obtained by Hayabusa2 and promotes scientific studies not only for Ryugu itself and other small bodies but also for the Solar System evolution that small bodies shed light on., Comment: 62 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables. The thermal properties of the surfaces of asteroids determine the magnitude of the drift rate cause by the Yarkovsky force. In the general case of Main Belt asteroids, the Yarkovsky force is indirectly proportional to the thermal inertia, $\Gamma$. Following the proposed relationship between $\Gamma$ and asteroid diameter $D$, we find that asteroids' Yarkovsky drift rates might have a more complex size dependence than previous thought, leading to a curved family V-shape boundary in semi-major axis, a, vs. 1/$D$ space. This implies that asteroids are drifting faster at larger sizes than previously considered decreasing on average the known ages of asteroid families. The V-Shape curvature is determined for $>$25 families located throughout the Main Belt to quantify the Yarkovsky size-dependent drift rate. We find that there is no correlation between family age and V-shape curvature. Ejection velocity fields of asteroid families are largely unconstrained due to the fact that members disperse relatively quickly on Myr time-scales by secular resonances and the Yarkovsky effect. The spreading of fragments in $a$ by the Yarkovsky effect is indistinguishable from the spreading caused by the initial ejection of fragments. By examining families $<$20 Myrs-old, we can use the V-shape identification technique to separate family shapes that are due to the initial ejection velocity field and those that are due to the Yarkovsky effect. $<$20 Myr-old asteroid families provide an opportunity to study the velocity field of family fragments before they become too dispersed. Only the Karin family's initial velocity field has been determined and scales inversely with diameter, $D^{-1}$. We have applied the V-shape identification technique to constrain young families' initial ejection velocity fields by measuring the curvature of their fragments' V-shape correlation in semi-major axis, $a$, vs. $D^{-1}$ space. Curvature from a straight line implies a deviation from a scaling of $D^{-1}$. We measure the V-shape curvature of 11 young asteroid families including the \FYnospace, Aeolia, Brangane, Brasilia, Clarissa, Iannini, Karin, Konig, Koronis(2), Theobalda and Veritas asteroid families. The Asteroid Belt is characterized by the radial mixing of bodies with different physical properties, a very low mass compared to Minimum Mass Solar Nebula expectations and has an excited orbital distribution. Models of the evolution of the Asteroid Belt show that the origin of its structure is strongly linked to the process of terrestrial planet formation. The Grand Tack model presents a possible solution to the conundrum of reconciling the small mass of Mars with the properties of the Asteroid Belt, including the mass depletion, radial mixing and orbital excitation. However, while the inclination distribution produced in the Grand Tack model is in good agreement with the one observed, the eccentricity distribution is skewed towards values larger than those found today. Here, we evaluate the evolution of the orbital properties of the Asteroid Belt from the end of the Grand Tack model (at the end of the gas nebula phase when planets emerge from the dispersing gas disk), throughout the subsequent evolution of the Solar System including an instability of the Giant Planets approximately 400 My later. Before the instability, the terrestrial planets were modeled on dynamically cold orbits with Jupiter and Saturn locked in a 3:2 mean motion resonance. The model continues for an additional 4.1 Gy after the giant planet instability. Our results show that the eccentricity distribution obtained in the Grand Tack model evolves towards one very similar to that currently observed, and the semimajor axis distribution does the same. The inclination distribution remains nearly unchanged with a slight preference for depletion at low inclination; this leads to the conclusion that the inclination distribution at the end of the Grand Tack is a bit over-excited., Comment: published on Icarus

It has been shown that some aspects of the terrestrial planets can be explained, particularly the Earth/Mars mass ratio, when they form from a truncated disk with an outer edge near 1.0 au (Hansen 2009). This has been previously modeled starting from an intermediate stage of growth utilizing pre-formed planetary embryos. We present simulations that were designed to test this idea by following the growth process from km-sized objects located between 0.7 to 1.0 au up to terrestrial planets. The simulations explore initial conditions where the solids in the disk are planetesimals with radii initially between 3 and 300 km, alternately including effects from a dissipating gaseous solar nebula and collisional fragmentation. We use a new Lagrangian code known as LIPAD (Levison et al. 2012), which is a particle-based code that models the fragmentation, accretion and dynamical evolution of a large number of planetesimals, and can model the entire growth process from km-sizes up to planets. A suite of large (Mars mass) planetary embryos is complete in only 1 Myr, containing most of the system mass. A quiescent period then persists for 10-20 Myr characterized by slow diffusion of the orbits and continued accretion of the remaining planetesimals. This is interupted by an instability that leads to embryos crossing orbits and embyro-embryo impacts that eventually produce the final set of planets. There are only a few known main belt (MB) asteroid families with ages greater than 2 Gyr (Bro\v{z} et al. 2013, Spoto et al. 2015). Estimates based on the family producing collision rate suggest that the lack of >2 Gyr-old families may be due to a selection bias in current techniques used to identify families. Family fragments disperse in their orbital elements, semi-major axis, $a$, eccentricity, $e$, and inclination, $i$, due to secular resonances, close encounters with massive asteroids and the non-gravitational Yarkovsky force. This causes the family fragments to be indistinguishable from the background of the main belt making them more difficult to identify with the hierarchical clustering method (HCM) with increasing family age. The discovery of the Eulalia and new Polana families in the inner belt relied on new techniques because Yarkovsky spreading made them too disperse to be identified using the classical HCM. The technique used to discover the new Polana and Eulalia families is modified to identify asteroid families by searching for correlations between $a$ and asteroid diameter, $D$, or absolute magnitude, $H$. A group of asteroids is identified as a collisional family if its boundary in the $a$ vs. 1/$D$ or $a$ vs. $H$ planes has a characteristic V-shape which is due to the size dependent Yarkovsky spreading. The V-shape boundary is identified with two separate techniques. The first identifies a border by measuring the drop between the number of objects inside and outside of the border. The second identifies the V-shape border by measuring the number density of objects in $a$ vs. 1/$D$,$H$ space. The V-shape techniques are demonstrated on known families Erigone, Vesta, Koronis, and families difficult to identify by HCM such as Flora, Baptistina, new Polana, Eulalia and Karin. Laser ablation of a Near-Earth Object (NEO) on a collision course with Earth produces a cloud of ejecta which exerts a thrust on the NEO, deflecting it from its original trajectory. Ablation may be performed from afar by illuminating an Earth-targeting asteroid or comet with a stand-off "DE- STAR" system consisting of a large phased-array laser in Earth orbit. Alternatively, a much smaller stand-on "DE-STARLITE" system may travel alongside the target, slowly deflecting it from nearby over a long period. This paper presents orbital simulations comparing the effectiveness of both systems across a range of laser and NEO parameters. Simulated parameters include magnitude, duration and, for the stand-on system, direction of the thrust, as well as the type, size and orbital characteristics of the target NEO. These simulations indicate that deflection distance is approximately proportional to the magnitude of thrust and to the square of the duration of ablation, and is inversely proportional to the mass. Furthermore, deflection distance shows strong dependence on thrust direction with the optimal direction of thrust varying with the duration of laser activity. As one example, consider a typical 325 m asteroid: beginning 15 yr in advance, just 2 N of thrust from a ~20 kW stand-on DE-STARLITE system is sufficient to deflect the asteroid by 2 R_e. Satellites of asteroids have been discovered in nearly every known small body population, and a remarkable aspect of the known satellites is the diversity of their properties. They tell a story of vast differences in formation and evolution mechanisms that act as a function of size, distance from the Sun, and the properties of their nebular environment at the beginning of Solar System history and their dynamical environment over the next 4.5 Gyr. The mere existence of these systems provides a laboratory to study numerous types of physical processes acting on asteroids and their dynamics provide a valuable probe of their physical properties otherwise possible only with spacecraft. Advances in understanding the formation and evolution of binary systems have been assisted by: 1) the growing catalog of known systems, increasing from 33 to nearly 250 between the Merline et al. (2002) Asteroids III chapter and now, 2) the detailed study and long-term monitoring of individual systems such as 1999 KW4 and 1996 FG3, 3) the discovery of new binary system morphologies and triple systems, 4) and the discovery of unbound systems that appear to be end-states of binary dynamical evolutionary paths. Specifically for small bodies (diameter smaller than 10 km), these observations and discoveries have motivated theoretical work finding that thermal forces can efficiently drive the rotational disruption of small asteroids. Long-term monitoring has allowed studies to constrain the system's dynamical evolution by the combination of tides, thermal forces and rigid body physics. The past decade has brought major improvements in large-scale asteroid discovery and characterization with over half a million known asteroids and over 100,000 with some measurement of physical characterization. This explosion of data has allowed us to create a new global picture of the Main Asteroid Belt. Put in context with meteorite measurements and dynamical models, a new and more complete picture of Solar System evolution has emerged. The question has changed from "What was the original compositional gradient of the Asteroid Belt?" to "What was the original compositional gradient of small bodies across the entire Solar System?" No longer is the leading theory that two belts of planetesimals are primordial, but instead those belts were formed and sculpted through evolutionary processes after Solar System formation. This article reviews the advancements on the fronts of asteroid compositional characterization, meteorite measurements, and dynamical theories in the context of the heliocentric distribution of asteroid compositions seen in the Main Belt today. This chapter also reviews the major outstanding questions relating to asteroid compositions and distributions and summarizes the progress and current state of understanding of these questions to form the big picture of the formation and evolution of asteroids in the Main Belt. Pluto's system of 5 known satellites are in a puzzling orbital configuration. Each of the four small satellites are on low-eccentricity and low-inclination orbits situated near a mean motion resonance with the largest satellite Charon. The Pluto-Charon binary likely formed as a result of a giant impact and so the simplest explanation for the small satellites is that they accreted from debris of that collision. The Pluto-Charon binary has evolved outward since its formation due to tidal forces, which drove them into their current doubly synchronous state. Meanwhile, leftover debris from the formation of Charon was not initially distant enough from Pluto-Charon to explain the orbits of the current small satellites. The outstanding problems of the system are the movement of debris outward and the small satellites location near mean motion resonances with Charon. This work explores the dynamical behavior of collisionally interacting debris orbiting the Pluto-Charon system. While this work specifically tests initial disk and ring configurations designed to mimic the aftermath of the disruption of satellites by heliocentric impactors, we generally find that collisional interactions can help move material outwards and keep otherwise unstable material dynamically bound to the Pluto-Charon system. These processes can produce rings of debris whose orbits evolve rapidly due to collisional processes, with increasing pericenters and decreasing semimajor axes. While these rings and disks of debris eventually build satellites significantly further out than the initial locations of a disrupted satellite, they do not show a strong preference for building satellites in or near mean motion resonances with Charon under a wide array of tested conditions., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. According to the generally accepted scenario, the last giant impact on the Earth formed the Moon and initiated the final phase of core formation by melting the Earth's mantle. A key goal of geochemistry is to date this event, but different ages have been proposed. Some argue for an early Moon-forming event, approximately 30 million years (Myr) after the condensation of the first solids in the Solar System, whereas others claim a date later than 50 Myr (and possibly as late as around 100 My) after condensation. Here we show that a Moon-forming event at 40 Myr after condensation, or earlier, is ruled out at a 99.9 per cent confidence level. We use a large number of N-body simulations to demonstrate a relationship between the time of the last giant impact on an Earth-like planet and the amount of mass subsequently added during the era known as Late Accretion. As the last giant impact is delayed, the late-accreted mass decreases in a predictable fashion. This relationship exists within both the classical scenario and the Grand Tack scenario of terrestrial planet formation, and it holds across a wide range of disk conditions. The concentration of highly siderophile elements (HSEs) in Earth's mantle constrains the mass of chondritic material added to Earth during Late Accretion. Using HSE abundance measurements, we determine a Moon-formation age of 95 +/- 32 Myr since condensation. The possibility exists that some late projectiles were differentiated and left an incomplete HSE record in Earth's mantle. Even in this case, various isotopic constraints strongly suggest that the late-accreted mass did not exceed 1 per cent of Earth's mass, and so the HSE clock still robustly limits the timing of the Moon-forming event to significantly later than 40 My after condensation., Comment: Includes Supplemental Material

The growth and composition of Earth is a direct consequence of planet formation throughout the Solar System. We discuss the known history of the Solar System, the proposed stages of growth and how the early stages of planet formation may be dominated by pebble growth processes. Pebbles are small bodies whose strong interactions with the nebula gas lead to remarkable new accretion mechanisms for the formation of planetesimals and the growth of planetary embryos. Many of the popular models for the later stages of planet formation are presented. The classical models with the giant planets on fixed orbits are not consistent with the known history of the Solar System, fail to create a high Earth/Mars mass ratio, and, in many cases, are also internally inconsistent. The successful Grand Tack model creates a small Mars, a wet Earth, a realistic asteroid belt and the mass-orbit structure of the terrestrial planets. In the Grand Tack scenario, growth curves for Earth most closely match a Weibull model. The feeding zones, which determine the compositions of Earth and Venus follow a particular pattern determined by Jupiter, while the feeding zones of Mars and Theia, the last giant impactor on Earth, appear to randomly sample the terrestrial disk. The asteroid belt is the leftover of the original planetesimal population in the inner solar system. However, currently the asteroids have orbits with all possible values of eccentricities and inclinations compatible with long-term dynamical stability, whereas the initial planetesimal orbits should have been quasi-circular and almost co-planar. The total mass in the asteroid population is a small fraction of that existing primordially. Also, asteroids with different chemical/mineralogical properties are not ranked in an orderly manner with mean heliocentric distance as one could expect from the existence of a radial gradient of the temperature in the proto-planetary disk, but they are partially mixed. These properties show that the asteroid belt has been severely sculpted by one or a series of processes during its lifetime. This paper reviews the processes that have been proposed so far, discussing the properties that they explain and the problems that they are confronted with. Emphasis is paid to the interplay between the dynamical and the collisional evolution of the asteroid population, which allows the use of the size distribution to constrain the dynamical models. We divide the asteroid belt evolution into three phases. The first phase started during the lifetime of the gaseous proto-planetary disk, when the giant planets formed and presumably experienced large-scale migrations, and continued after the removal of the gas, during the build-up of the terrestrial planets. The second phase occurred after the removal of the gaseous proto-planetary disk and it became particularly lively for the asteroid belt when the giant planets suddenly changed their orbits, as a result of a mutual dynamical instability and the interaction with the trans-Neptunian planetesimal disk.
