Children and adolescents with cerebral palsy have diverse needs and often engage with healthcare services, including paediatric rehabilitation. Partnering with these children and adolescents on research projects to inform practice has the potential to ensure services continue to remain relevant and appropriate. This study aimed to identify what children and adolescents with cerebral palsy suggest are effective ways for researchers to involve them as partners in research. This qualitative study was guided by interpretive description. Children and adolescents with cerebral palsy between 8 and 18 years participated in semi-structured, activity-based focus groups or interviews. Verbatim transcripts were coded and analysed using thematic analysis. One member of the research team was a young woman with cerebral palsy. Seventeen children and adolescents with cerebral palsy from NSW and Victoria (Australia) were involved. Participants were between 8 and 18 years (mean = 12 years), male (n = 11) and female (n = 6). Analysis identified four nested themes: "insider knowledge", "reasons for involvement", "roles in research" and "facilitating partnership". This study identified perspectives of children and adolescents on their involvement as research partners, and considerations for researchers to facilitate involvement of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy as partners in research. The commitment in healthcare to client-centred practice requires that consumers, including children and young people with cerebral palsy, have opportunities to influence the direction of research which impacts them. Children and young people with cerebral palsy are interested in research partnerships and motivated to be involved in various areas of research. Effective research partnerships with younger populations can be facilitated by researchers acknowledging a child or young person's expertise, and employing strategies relating to open communication, flexibility and support. Aim: To explore parent's perspective of their child's participation in a magic-themed intervention called Amazing Magic Club (AMC), and to further our understanding of motivated engagement and the impact of themed group-based interventions for children with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP). Methods: Twenty-nine parents of children with unilateral CP completed semi-structured interviews. The child participants (n = 28) attended one of three AMCs; average age of the children was 10y 6mo (SD 2y 2mo). The parent interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: The three themes are: "It's okay to be me", the magic effect and "I can do it". Parents observed their children to belong and learn about their abilities. The importance of the magicians and the performance is described. Parents observed their children to have increased self-belief and a new willingness to attempt difficult tasks. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the results of searching free versus subscription databases and using brief versus comprehensive search strategies to locate evidence for three pediatric occupational therapy clinical questions. METHOD: Three clinical questions were nominated by practicing pediatric occupational therapists. Brief and comprehensive search strategies were then developed. Searches were conducted in three free-to-access databases and four subscription databases. RESULTS: Based on descriptive data, more relevant citations were retrieved using the subscription databases compared with the free databases and when using a comprehensive search strategy. Citations that were present in some databases were not always retrieved by the searches. This was mainly due to the inclusion of an insufficient number of search terms in the brief search strategies used in this study and a mismatch between terms used in the search strategies and the databases. CONCLUSION: Clinicians may need to use both subscription and free databases and use comprehensive search strategies to maximize retrieval of relevant articles to answer pediatric clinical questions. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of rater training on interrater reliability, internal consistency, standard error of measurement, and rater familiarity for the Melbourne Assessment of Unilateral Upper Limb Function. Twenty-four participants (raters) were randomly assigned to either 'trained' (n=12) or 'untrained' (n=12) interventions; they then scored the same nine video recordings of children completing the instrument. The age range of the children was 5 years 5 months to 12 years; there were six males, three females, all with spastic cerebral palsy (five with quadriparesis and four with hemiparesis); Gross Motor Function Classification System levels were I (n=3), II (n=3), III (n=1), and IV (n=2). All participants were novice occupational therapists and had no previous experience of using the instrument. A significant difference in perceived test familiarity was found after scoring but not before: trained raters scored higher. A significant difference in total scores for all cases was found and in eight of 16 individual item total raw scores. Again, trained raters scored higher. Interrater reliability was high in both groups, except item 6 (untrained). Internal consistency was high in both groups, except items 6 and 9 (untrained). We conclude that training for novice users increases familiarity and results in raters' perceiving higher levels of performance in some items. The information contained in pathology reports of radical prostatectomy specimens is critically important to treating physicians for the selection of adjuvant therapy, the evaluation of therapy, estimating prognosis, and analyzing outcomes. This information is also important to patients and their families. The first phase of this study consisted of a retrospective chart review of 554 cases of radical prostatectomy (ICD-9-CM procedure code of 60.5) in New York State for the second six-month period of 1996. This review focused on ten elements (quality indicators): submission of a frozen section, location of the adenocarcinoma, proportion of specimen involved by adenocarcinoma, perineural involvement, vascular involvement, seminal vesicle status, periprostate fat status, number of nodes submitted, status of nodes, and PIN (prostate intra-epithelial neoplasia). The second phase of this project consisted of an educational feedback program involving the directors of pathology laboratories in all hospitals in New York State. A post-intervention review of the medical charts of all male Medicare patients discharged from New York State acute care hospitals with the ICD-9-CM procedure code of 60.5 (radical prostatectomy) was conducted for the six-month period February 1 through July 31, 1999. A total of 304 charts were reviewed. Performance on the ten indicators in the first phase of the study varied from 14.8% (periprostate fat status) to 85.9% (seminal vesicle involvement). Performance for all hospitals was 50% for four quality indicators and less than 70% for seven. Post-intervention improvements in performance occurred with nine of the ten quality indicators. These improvements ranged from 1.4% (status of lymph nodes submitted) to 23.9% (proportion of specimen involved by adenocarcinoma). The results of this study demonstrate that the issues identified in the baseline with radical prostatectomy pathology reports were amenable to a cooperative educational intervention. In recent years, the Cancer Committee of the College of American Pathologists and the Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathology developed suggested protocols for reporting the findings on radical prostatectomy specimens. The objectives of this study were to assess radical prostatectomy-specimen reports by using quality indicators derived from existing suggested protocols and to thereby assist pathologists in improving the quality of their reports on such specimens. A retrospective chart review of 554 cases for the second 6-month period of 1996 focused on 10 quality indicators: submission of a frozen section; location of the adenocarcinoma; proportion of the specimen involved by adenocarcinoma; perineural involvement; vascular involvement; seminal vesicle involvement; periprostatic fat status; number of nodes submitted; status of nodes; and prostate intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN). The findings of this study were shared with the pathology departments in all hospitals in New York State. In addition, the 113 hospitals from which the 554 cases were drawn were given their institution-specific data. Teleconferences were held with the 37 hospitals that accounted for 72.4% of all cases. These conferences included directors of pathology and laboratories and focused on the aggregate statewide findings. The presence of quality indicators in reports varied from a mean of 14.8% (periprostatic fat) to a mean of 85.91% (seminal vesicle involvement). For all hospitals, 4 indicators (proportion of the specimen involved by adenocarcinoma, vascular involvement, periprostatic fat status, and PIN) were included in fewer than 50% of cases. These 4 quality indicators and an additional 3 others (submission of a frozen section, perineural involvement, and the number of nodes submitted) were included in fewer than 70% of cases. Only 3 indicators (location of the adenocarcinoma, seminal vesicle involvement, and the status of nodes) were found in more than 70% of cases. Although the mean level of quality indicator inclusion ranged from 14.8% to 85.9% for all cases examined, the absolute range for any individual indicator was 0% to 100%. Thus, some hospitals included a given indicator 100% of the time; others never included it. This pattern held true for all 10 indicators. High-volume hospitals (10 or more cases) performed significantly better than low-volume hospitals (14 cases) on 5 indicators (P < .05), and better, but not significantly so, for an additional 2 indicators. Overall, the mean inclusion levels for all 10 indicators were 10% higher for high-volume hospitals compared with low-volume and medium-volume hospitals (5-9 cases). This study demonstrated wide variations in the inclusion of quality indicators by pathologists in their radical prostatectomy-pathology reports. Whereas some hospitals always include given indicators, others never mentioned them. These marked disparities point to the need for standardized reporting for radical prostatectomy specimens. The Handwriting Speed Test (HST) is a standardized, norm-referenced test of handwriting speed, which was developed to be part of a comprehensive handwriting evaluation of school students. This study examined test-retest, interrater, and intrarater reliability and construct validity of the HST in year 3 and year 6 students. Two hundred and twelve students from randomly selected schools in Sydney, Australia completed the HST twice at 4-week intervals. The intraclass correlation coefficients for the sample as a whole were high for interrater and intrarater reliability and good for test-retest reliability. Scores of students rated as fast or slow by their teachers were compared to examine the test's construct validity. Although HST scores were different for students rated fast and slow by teachers, consistency was less between classification of fast and slow by the HST normative data and teachers' ratings. Weaknesses in study design probably account for this finding and future research is needed to further examine validity.
