1. A Phenomenological Study Exploring U.S. College Students' Study Abroad Experiences: Understanding Self-Leadership through Initiators and Outcomes of Transformative Learning

Abstract

As globalized industries evolve, leaders of today and tomorrow will need multifaceted skills for multilayered engagement in an international environment. One method to develop competencies built for a global setting is study abroad, where U.S. colleges embed students in a travel context beyond classroom walls and borders. Study abroad is made up of pre-departure, in-destination, and reentry that remains less understood across U.S. colleges yet may produce a transformative learning experience. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of U.S. college study abroad students during the reentry phase. Specifically, this study sought to understand initiators and outcomes of transformative learning in self-leadership development after studying abroad. The following 10 deductive themes and two deductive subthemes emerged: (a) Lacking languages in the United States, (b) Viewing my world in a new lens, (c) Realizing a great sense of empowerment, (d) Catching the travel bug, (e) Seeking transformative lessons, (f) Open mindedness through experiential learning, (g) More inclusivity for a diversified community, (h) Going global for new professional practices, (i) Increased capacity for complexity, and (j) Understanding complexity eases pressure. The two subthemes were (a) Leading with a shifted worldview and (b) Refining leadership with a new worldview. Disorientation profiles were also created for each participant. Findings revealed that initiators of transformative learning took place through disorienting experiences as well as transformative outcomes were realized by students after reentry. The findings of the study have identified for the first time in research the developed frameworks of transformative learning theory, the disorientation index and typology of transformative outcomes, as a functional combined tool to understand initiators and outcomes of transformative learning. These findings may assist international educators, multinational businesses, and global leaders of today and tomorrow. 7. Pain. Purpose. Art.: The tragedy of silence

Abstract

In August 2014 I lie for hours, motionless and bloodied on the ground in Center City Philadelphia before Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE statue, in silent protest of police brutality. It went viral. Overnight I became ‘the guy who always talks about race.’ Soon people wanted my opinion on every aspect of critical race theory imaginable. I had to educate myself, and quick, because what they didn’t understand is that my burning desire to react to this pressing issue didn’t come from readings in books. It came from a deep fear and disappointment in my lived experience as a Black person in this country, and I could no longer be silent. It was a long time before I found the beauty and value in my lived, Black experience. In October 2015 I was able to combine that experience with my artistic skill as an actor; writing and performing, THE BITTER GAME. This piece of theater effectively combined all that petrifies me as an actor and human; devised theater, solo performance, semi-autobiographical storytelling and yes… basketball. The sleepless nights and mounting anxiety I daily felt while sitting to put pen to paper, attempting in my own way to address such a polarizing topic as excessive police force, was paralyzing. My heart break daily for the families of the victims whom I used as source material. However, through it all, I was reminded of these two truths: for the artist, heartbreak is a rite of passage and that the thin line between art and activism must be traversed with courage.

Abstract

Induced voltage and current in a deenergized transmission line caused by other lines nearby can be caused by electric-field and magnetic-field induction. These voltages and currents present a serious work hazard for line-crew personnel. Proper understanding of the phenomenon involved and identification of the associated hazards are necessary to safely perform deenergized line work. The purpose of this paper is to clarify some of the misconceptions that have been prevalent in the industry for many years as well as to expand on the test data available in literature. This paper discusses, in simple terms, the relevant parameters that affect the magnitude of the induced voltage and current as well as the work hazards they create. Utah Fuel Co. employed ventilation surveys and simulation models to strike a compromise between immediate and long-term ventilation needs at its Skyline Mines near Price, UT. Its strategy led the company to install a new portal at its No. 1 longwall mine and to modify the return airway and install 3C supports at the tailgates of its No. 3 longwall mine. These changes raised the air quantity flowing through the fan by 49,000 cfm.

Abstract

Academic staff from four disciplines formed an interdisciplinary team to develop a curriculum for collaborative learning across three schools. The curriculum focused on the ability of students to translate the principles of sustainability into practical design solutions for the Gardens Point campus of QUT. The teaching and learning opportunities associated with the project encouraged students to investigate the sustainability issues within a precinct of the campus, produce a concept plan to improve the site and study a particular issue in further detail to inform detailed proposals for QUT. Most students said they had a positive experience in working with colleagues and staff from other disciplines and further joint projects should be developed to involve students from allied disciplines. This paper describes how the curriculum for collaborative learning in sustainability was designed and the lessons learned from its implementation.
