14. RESEARCH ARTICLE: "IT'S COMPLICATED TO GET SOMEONE OFF THE ROAD"- SPOUSES' EXPERIENCES OF DRIVING CESSATION.

Abstract

This study explored spouses' experiences of their partner ceasing driving due to dementia. Spouses were recruited from a geriatric out-patient clinic for persons with dementia. Phenomenological data was derived from individual interviews with four spouses: two men and two women. Spouses described the process of their partner ceasing driving as a highly emotional event. They discussed whose responsibility they believed it was to facilitate driving cessation and all spouses experienced that their partner lost his/her independence immediately following ceasing driving. There is a need for holistic and sensitive health care practices that consider the aftermath of ceasing driving on both driver and spouse as well as the functional and emotional consequences of this life- changing event. This will require support for spouses of partners with a dementia diagnosis, to help them cope with the difficulties they face with this decision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
