Pulsars emerge in the Fermi era as a sizable population of gamma-ray sources. Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) constitute an older subpopulation whose sky distribution extends to high Galactic latitudes, and it has been suggested that unresolved members of this class may contribute a significant fraction of the measured large-scale isotropic gamma-ray background (IGRB). We investigate the possible energy-dependent contribution of unresolved MSPs to the anisotropy of the Fermi-measured IGRB. For observationally-motivated MSP population models, we show that the preliminary Fermi anisotropy measurement places an interesting constraint on the abundance of MSPs in the Galaxy and the typical MSP flux, about an order of magnitude stronger than constraints on this population derived from the intensity of the IGRB alone. We also examine the possibility of a MSP component in the IGRB mimicking a dark matter signal in anisotropy-based searches, and conclude that the energy dependence of an anisotropy signature would distinguish MSPs from all but very light dark matter candidates., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; minor revisions; matches version accepted to MNRAS

Warm dark matter (WDM) might more easily account for small scale clustering measurements than the heavier particles typically invoked in Lambda cold dark matter (LCDM) cosmologies. In this paper, we consider a Lambda WDM cosmology in which sterile neutrinos nu_s, with a mass m_s of roughly 1-100 keV, are the dark matter. We use the diffuse X-ray spectrum (total minus resolved point source emission) of the Andromeda galaxy to constrain the rate of sterile neutrino radiative decay: nu_s -> nu_{e,mu,tau} + gamma. Our findings demand that m_s < 3.5 keV (95% C.L.) which is a significant improvement over the previous (95% C.L.) limits inferred from the X-ray emission of nearby clusters, m_s < 8.2 keV (Virgo A) and m_s < 6.3 keV (Virgo A + Coma)., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, minor revisions, accepted for publication in Physical Review D

We constrain the Cosmic Star Formation Rate (CSFR) by requiring that massive stars produce the observed UV, optical, and IR light while at the same time not overproduce the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background as bounded by Super-Kamiokande. With the massive star component so constrained we then show that a reasonable choice of stellar Initial Mass Function and other parameters results in SNIa rates and iron yields in good agreement with data. In this way we define a `concordance' CSFR that predicts the optical SNII rate and the SNIa contribution to the MeV Cosmic Gamma-Ray Background. The CSFR constrained to reproduce these and other proxies of intermediate and massive star formation is more clearly delineated than if it were measured by any one technique and has the following testable consequences: (1) SNIa contribute only a small fraction of the MeV Cosmic Gamma-Ray Background, (2) massive star core-collapse is nearly always accompanied by a successful optical SNII, and (3) the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background is tantalizingly close to detectability., Comment: Improved discussion. In 2002, Ray Davis and Masatoshi Koshiba were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics ``for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos.'' However, while astronomy has undergone a revolution in understanding by synthesizing data taken at many wavelengths, the universe has only barely been glimpsed in neutrinos, just the Sun and the nearby SN 1987A. An entire universe awaits, and since neutrinos can probe astrophysical objects at densities, energies, and distances that are otherwise inaccessible, the results are expected to be particularly exciting. Similarly, the revolution in quantitative cosmology has heightened the need for very precise tests that depend on the effects of neutrinos, and prominent among them is the search for the effects of neutrino mass, since neutrinos are a small but known component of the dark matter. In this report, we highlight some of the key opportunties for progress in neutrino astrophysics and cosmology, and the implications for other areas of physics.

We calculate the Supernova Relic Neutrino (SRN) background flux for the KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (SK) detectors, motivated by the reduction in background at SK and new results for the star formation history (e.g., from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)). Our best estimate for the flux at SK is slightly below, but very close to the current SK upper limit. The SK upper limit is already inconsistent with a range of star formation histories allowed by the SDSS data. We estimate that the SRN background should be detected (at 1-sigma) at SK with a total of about 9 years (including the existing 4 years) of data. While KamLAND is a much smaller detector compared to SK, it profits from being practically background-free and from its sensitivity to the lower energy supernova neutrinos. KamLAND could make a 1-sigma detection of the SRN with a total of about 5 years of data. Given the small expected SRN event rate, we also consider the detection of the SRN in a modified SK detector with a lower threshold and reduced background where the time to detection can be reduced by a factor of 10 relative to the existing SK estimate., Comment: Figure added, improved discussion of neutrino mixing, along with a new lower bound to the expected flux

We discuss bounds on the cosmological relativistic energy density as a function of redshift, reviewing the big bang nucleosynthesis and cosmic microwave background bounds, updating bounds from large scale structure, and introducing a new bound from the magnitude-redshift relation of Type Ia supernovae. We conclude that the standard and well-motivated assumption that relativistic energy is negligible during recent epochs is not necessitated by extant data. We then demonstrate the utility of these bounds by constraining the mass and lifetime of a hypothetical massive big bang relic particle., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Recent cosmic microwave background (CMB) results from BOOMERANG, MAXIMA, and DASI provide cosmological constraints on new physics that can be competitive with those derived from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). In particular, both CMB and BBN can be used to place limits on models involving neutrino degeneracy and additional relativistic degrees of freedom. However, for the case of the CMB, these constraints are, in general, sensitive to the assumed priors. We examine the CMB and BBN constraints on such models and study the sensitivity of ``new physics" to the assumed priors. If we add a constraint on the age of the universe ($t_0 \ga 11$ Gyr), then for models with a cosmological constant, the range of baryon densities and neutrino degeneracy parameters allowed by the CMB and BBN is fairly robust: $\eta_{10} = 6.0 \pm 0.6$, \deln $\la 6$, $\xi_e \la 0.3$. In the absence of new physics, models without a cosmological constant are only marginally compatible with recent CMB observations (excluded at the 93% confidence level)., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; version to appear in Phys. Energy injected into the Cosmic Microwave Background at redshifts z<10^6 will distort its spectrum permanently. In this paper we discuss the distortion caused by annihilations of relic particles. We use the observational bounds on deviations from a Planck spectrum to constrain a combination of annihilation cross section, mass, and abundance. For particles with (s-wave) annihilation cross section, <\sigma|v|>=\sigma_0, the bound is f[(\sigma_0/6e-27cm^3/s)(\Omega_{X\bar{X}}h^2)^2]/(m_X/MeV)<0.2, where m_X is the particle mass, \Omega_{X\bar{X}} is the fraction of the critical density the particle and its antiparticle contribute if they survive to the present time, h=H_0/(100km/s/Mpc), H_0 is the Hubble constant, and f is the fraction of the annihilation energy that interacts electromagnetically. We also compute the less stringent limits for p-wave annihilation. We update other bounds on residual annihilations and compare them to our CMB bound., Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. D

We review the Cosmology and Physics underlying Primordial Nucleosynthesis and survey current observational data in order to compare the predictions of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis with the inferred primordial abundances. If galactic halos contain stellar remnants, the infra-red flux from the remnant progenitors would contribute to the opacity of multi-TeV gamma-rays. The multi-TeV gamma-ray horizon is established to be at a redshift z>0.034 by the observation of the blazar Mkn501 . By requiring that the optical depth due to \gamma \gamma ---> e+ e- be less than one for a source at z=0.034 we limit the cosmological density of stellar remnants, Omega_rm \le (2-4) x 10^-3 h_70^-1 (h_70 is the Hubble constant in units of 70 km sec-1 Mpc-1) and thus strongly constrain stellar remnants as a cosmologically significant source of dark matter., Comment: 6 pages, Submitted to ApJ Letters
