8. Violence in the wake of civil war : investigating the transformation of intergroup relations in Nepal and Mozambique

Abstract

When a civil war ends there is a formal cessation of hostilities between the warring groups. Yet the termination of fighting does not necessarily end the violence, which can persist into post-war years. The study of post-civil war violence as a distinct phenomenon is dominated by explanations that see it as a legacy of the warring elite and an exercise in preventing them restarting war, or, as culturally embedded within interpersonal relations. This thesis draws on the group nature of civil war to offer a different perspective on this problem. It considers post-civil war violence as a product of continuing hostile relations between previous warring groups and examines the transformation of broader intergroup relations in post-war years. The rationale for the research rests on the idea that if violence is part of intergroup relations, then how might a more informed understanding of these relations facilitate effective peacebuilding interventions in countries emerging from civil war. Using qualitative methods, and a case study approach focusing on Nepal and Mozambique, I compare understandings and experiences of the transformation of intergroup relations from the perspective of political parties that claim to represent the previous warring groups, to that of people living in villages (three in each country). The study finds that violence can remain a central feature of how political parties relate to one another, even after decades of peace. To appreciate this violence requires a conceptual step away from dominant ways of thinking of violence as physical or structural. Conversely, while intergroup violence does not appear to have been a problem within the villages, the presence of violence within interparty relations is driving a pervasive and persistent fear that civil war may once again erupt. The thesis examines the impact of this violence on both the peace process and group relations to highlight the need to recognise and proactively address it.

Abstract

The large majority of extragalactic very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) sources belongs to the class of active galactic nuclei (AGN), in particular the BL Lac sub-class. AGNs are characterized by an extremely bright and compact emission region, powered by a super-massive black hole (SMBH) and an accretion disk, and relativistic outflows (jets) detected all across the electro-magnetic spectrum. In BL Lac sources the jet axis is oriented close to the line of sight, giving rise to a relativistic boosting of the emission. In radio galaxies, on the other hand, the jet makes a larger angle to the line of sight allowing to resolve the central core and the jet in great details. The giant radio galaxy M 87 with its proximity (1 6Mpc) and its very massive black hole ((3-6) x 10^9 M_solar) provides a unique laboratory to investigate VHE emission in such objects and thereby probe particle acceleration to relativistic energies near SMBH and in jets. M 87 has been established as a VHE emitter since 2005. The VHE emission displays strong variability on time-scales as short as a day. It has been subject of a large joint VHE and multi-wavelength (MWL) monitoring campaign in 2008, where a rise in the 43 GHz VLBA radio emission of the innermost region (core) was found to coincide with a flaring activity at VHE. This had been interpreted as a strong indication that the VHE emission is produced in the direct vicinity of the SMBH black hole. In 2010 again a flare at VHE was detected triggering further MWL observations with the VLBA, Chandra, and other instruments. At the same time M 87 was also observed with the Fermi-LAT telescope at GeV energies and the European VLBI Network (EVN). 14. Quantum well intermixing for high brightness semiconductor lasers

Abstract

The research presented in this thesis describes how monolithic opto-electronic integration using quantum well intermixing (QWI) can be applied to improve the high brightness performance of single-mode ridge waveguide GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW) lasers. The sputtered SiO2 QWI technique is explained, and a selective process suitable for device manufacture was demonstrated. This QWI technology was applied to create three distinct devices to address the performance limitations imposed by catastrophic optical damage (COD), spatial mode instability, and overheating. A non absorbing mirror (NAM) laser technology was successfully demonstrated, capable of significantly improving the COD level of high power lasers prone to mirror degradation. Under pulsed test conditions designed to induce COD, the standard ridge laser suffered COD at 230 mW/facet, compared to 600 mW/facet for the NAM laser, demonstrating an improved COD level by a factor of 2.6. Confirmation of the COD failure mechanism was achieved by facet inspection, and removal of the damaged facets. Successful demonstration of a high brightness single lateral mode ridge laser with a self-aligned buried heterostructure defined by QWI was achieved. The device benefits from de-coupling of the optical and electrical confinement, allowing enhanced fundamental lateral mode operation up to higher powers; the buried heterostructure improves the lateral mode discrimination, thus suppressing higher order modes. Comparison of the standard ridge laser and the buried heterostructure ridge laser for ridge widths of 5 mm clearly demonstrated the improvement gained; the standard ridge laser was too wide to operate in the fundamental mode, whereas the buried heterostructure ridge laser showed dominantly single-mode operation up to 130 mW/facet.

Abstract

This thesis presents an edition, with introduction and commentary, of John Blount's early sixteenth century English translation of Nicholas Upton's De Studio Militari, a highly influential chivalric text written in 1446. It was comprised of four books, the first two provide a legal justification and discussion of conflict, and the last two a discussion of the theory and practice of heraldry. The translation survives in one copy, which is held in the Bodleian Library (Bodl. MS Eng.misc.d.227). The thesis is presented in two volumes: the first is the introduction and commentary, the second the text itself. The introduction begins with a biography of Upton and Blount and places the production of both the original De Studio Militari and the translation in context. After the biographies, each of the four books is introduced each with a chapter to itself, with Book Four divided into two chapters; one examining Upton's discussion of beasts and the other examining Upton's discussion of inanimate charges. These chapters outline sources used by Upton for the information he presented and compare the discourse Upton made with contemporary literature and an evaluation of De Studio Militari in its historical context. This ends volume one of the thesis. The second volume opens with a discussion of the families of De Studio Militari manuscripts and the position of John Blount's translation in relation to these, and the individual characteristics of Blount's translation. After this I outline the editorial conventions that I have used in the presentation of the manuscript: this is followed by the description of the manuscript of the English translation of De Studio Militari. After this is a list of all identified surviving manuscripts of De Studio Militari. There follows the text of the translation itself, transcribed word for word from the manuscript. I have inserted illustrations and modern punctuation into the transcript, and have added references that were omitted from the translation, which appear in the Latin versions of the text. Upton's introduction to De Studio Militari which is not in the translation, a section missed by Blount from chapter eighteen of Book One, and a list of the authorities which Upton cited are included as appendices.

Abstract

The political participation of youth is growing in importance with the proliferation of youth parliaments, councils, and online campaigning. Yet, these sites are not accessible to all youth, especially those from minority, or refugee communities. Activism by these types of youth is often denounced or reduced to dehumanising narratives of their experiences. This paper aims to explore alternative spaces for and political participation of refugees through participatory art and exhibition spaces, which are critical for devising policies for pre-emptive peacebuilding and challenging potential intercommunal conflict. In this paper, we draw on a Photovoice project in Istanbul, Johannesburg and a refugee settlement in South-West Uganda (Oruchinga) that brought youth from FDPs and host communities together to reflect on their everyday experiences. All these sites are marked by increasing anti-refugee sentiments and xenophobia, where the voices of refugees are often denied and misinterpreted, making them compelling cases to elaborate on alternative participation methods and spaces for the political participation of refugees. The paper engages with the idea of epistemic (in)justice and resistance as an overarching condition to explore how the youth developed collective political voices.

22. Exploring the Use of Lung Ultrasonography to Assess Cardiac Surgery Patients: A Scoping Review.

Abstract

Objective: Lung ultrasonography (LUS) is a safe, quick, and portable diagnostic tool, which can accurately detect postoperative pulmonary complications, postsurgically, without ionizing radiation. The aim of this scoping review was to map the evidence base regarding the use of LUS to assess cardiac surgery patients. Materials and Methods: The JBI methodology was used to conduct this particular scoping review. Results: In total, 90 publications were identified and of those, 73 were research studies, six were narrative reviews, and 11 were narrative, opinion, and text articles. The studies that were included were predominantly observational cohorts and aimed to determine or compare LUS diagnostic ability, prognostic ability, or both. The LUS methods used with patients were heterogeneous and variably reported. Conclusion: Despite an increasing number of studies since 2014, standardized protocols for the use of LUS are yet to be widely adopted and remain an important area for further work. Future research should consider exploring perceptions and experiences of LUS, the use of LUS in treatment outcome measurement, and use by nonphysician health care professionals. 41. Utah Tiger Muskellunge Management Plan

Abstract

Historically, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) managed with Tiger Muskellunge Esox masquinongy x E. lucius in Utah to provide effective biological controls for nuisance or overabundant fish populations in large reservoirs and to provide trophy fishing opportunities for Utah anglers fishing at larger lentic waters. However, achievement of desired management objectives has always been limited by the availability of fish for stocking. Although early Utah efforts to stock sufficient Tiger Muskellunge to meet management needs were reliant on fish purchased from other states (e.g., North Carolina, Iowa, and Nebraska), concerns regarding disease (viz., Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia or VHS) and aquatic invasive species (AIS) led UDWR to begin pursuit of their own Tiger Muskellunge culture program in 2007. In the past, almost all of the anglers engaging in recreational fishing for Tiger Muskellunge in Utah were extremely specialized and often associated with fishing organizations like Muskies Inc. Specialized anglers have continued to represent the majority of anglers pursuing Tiger Muskellunge. However, the size and unique predatory behavior of this species has caught the attention of a broader array of angling interests in recent years. These less specialized anglers are seeking Tiger Muskellunge fishing experiences that differ from those traditionally exhibited by the trophy-oriented, highly-specialized angler. During the past decade managers have recognized the potential of Tiger Muskellunge as a more than a trophy fish or biological control in large reservoirs. Potential uses of Tiger Muskellunge as a management tool might include use in the (1) control of stunted salmonid populations in high mountain lakes, (2) recruitment of young anglers at community waters, (3) development of opportunity fisheries for anglers seeking fast action for exciting new species, or (4) support of Tiger Muskellunge stocking programs through the sale of conservation permits.
