OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of oral sarcomas from geographic regions of Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on biopsies obtained from January 2007 to December 2016 at twelve Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology centres. Gender, age, evolution time, clinical aspects, tumour location, tumour size at diagnosis, radiographic aspects and histopathological diagnosis were evaluated. Data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods. RESULTS From 176,537, a total of 200 (0.11%) oral sarcomas were reported, and the most prevalent were osteosarcomas (74 cases; 37%) and Kaposi's sarcomas (52 cases; 26%). Males were more affected than females at a mean age of 32.2 years old (range of 3-87 years). Objective To integrate the available data published on central mucoepidermoid carcinoma (CMC) into a comprehensive analysis of its clinical aspects, histology, treatment, and prognostic factors. Methods An electronic search was undertaken in July 2017. Eligibility criteria for publications included having clinical, histological, treatment, and time of follow-up data to confirm the diagnosis. Results • 36 publications (147 CMCs) were included. • The lesion showed a slightly higher prevalence among women than men. • There was a high prevalence in the fifth to seventh decades of life. • The most common symptom was swelling and the most commonly observed area was the mandible. • Histologically, low-grade tumors were the most common. • The treatment of choice was tumor resection. In addition, gender, histological grade, conservative treatment, and lymph node metastasis were significant independent prognostic factors. Conclusion Male patients with histological grade III CMC of the jaw bone, who used conservative treatment as the main treatment, and presented with lymph node metastasis, were more likely to have a worse prognosis.

Estas entidades podem apresentar mais de 50 subtipos histológicos distintos, podem ocorrer em qualquer idade e não estão limitadas a uma área específica do corpo humano. A raridade da doença, combinada com um número diversificado de subtipos histológicos, pode dificultar o diagnóstico dessas lesões. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a prevalência de sarcomas orais nas regiões geográficas do Brasil. Foi realizado um estudo transversal nos prontuários de 12 centros independentes de diagnóstico bucal e maxilofacial de todas as regiões do Brasil (Norte, Sul, Nordeste, Sudeste e Centro-Oeste) de janeiro de 2007 a dezembro de 2016. Foram analisadas 176.537 amostras. As amostras foram avaliadas por um patologista experiente e especialista na área. Sarcomas orais foram recuperados, e cada um dos centros analisados recuperou dados referentes ao sexo, idade, tempo de evolução (meses), aspectos clínicos, localização do tumor primário, tamanho do tumor ao diagnóstico (cm), aspectos radiográficos e diagnóstico histopatológico final. Os dados coletados foram tabulados no Microsoft Excel® para análise epidemiológica. A análise descritiva e quantitativa dos dados foi realizada no software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), versão 22.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, EUA). De 176.537 amostras, um total de 200 pacientes (0,11%) afetados por sarcomas orais foram identificados nos centros estudados. Um total de 48 casos foram excluídos das amostras porque não preencheram os critérios para diagnóstico ou foram diagnosticados como sarcoma indiferenciado. A região Sudeste apresentou a maior quantidade de casos (121 casos; 60,5%), seguida pelo norte (40 casos; 20%), o nordeste (19 casos; 9,5%), centro-oeste (14 casos; 7%) e sul (6 casos; 3%). Os subtipos histológicos mais comuns foram o osteossarcoma (74 casos; 37%), seguido pelo sarcoma de Kaposi (52 casos; 26%), condrossarcoma (17 casos; 8,5%) e leiomiossarcoma (12 casos; 6%). As lesões foram mais prevalentes no sexo masculino do que no sexo feminino (relação homem: mulher de 1,27: 1), e a média de idade foi de 32,2 anos (variação de 3-87 anos). Oral myiasis is a condition caused by the invasion of fly larvae in body tissues. This work aims to notify a clinical case of an oral myiasis in the oral cavity. The patient is 12 years old, male, white, and a carrier of cerebral palsy. He was attended by public health care presenting releasing of larvae through the vestibular face and in adjacent palatine next to elements 12 and 13. The clinical examination verified lack of hygiene, caries, necrotic ulceration, acute inflammation, exhaling fetid smell, bleeding in anterosuperior region, and larvae in this area. Treatment was Vaseline as asphyxiant during 3 days and single-dose ivermectin. In return, multiple larvae were detected within the lesion, the patient was anesthetized, an incision for displacement of the palatine area was made, and 55 larvae were removed. After intervention and surgical finalization, PerioGard was prescribed for cleaning. Therefore, therapeutics is effective.

Giant keratoacanthoma is a rare subtype with a size exceeding 2 cm, with a high aggressiveness potential. Head and neck giant keratoacanthomas are uncommon and mainly affect male patients with a mean age of 59.1 years old, usually affecting the nose. Excision of the lesion is the preferred treatment for giant keratoacanthoma. The aim of this study is to analyze the clinicopathological characteristics of head and neck giant keratoacanthoma by reviewing the previously published English literature and reporting one new case of a rare lesion affecting the lower lip. Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces species, which usually affect the soft tissues of the cervicofacial region of adult males. Clinically, it’s characterized by a slow-growing indurated mass, especially in the submandibular area. However, in a few cases, the jaws bones can be affected developing osteomyelitis characteristics. The aim of this paper is to report a rare clinical case of Actinomycotic Osteomyelitis affecting the maxilla of a child, involving the maxillary sinus, orbital and zygomatic areas that was treated by the association of antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement. The patient’s 2 years follow-up was uneventful and no signs of the lesion recurrence.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of traumatic orbital defect reconstruction with titanium mesh. A retrospective study was made. Evaluations were made after a minimum postoperative follow-up of 12 months, looking for the main complications. Twenty-four patients were included in this evaluation; 19 were male (79.1%) and 5 (20.8%) were female. The main injury etiology was vehicle accidents (50%) followed by other causes. Fourteen patients (58.3%) presented orbital floor fractures, and 10 had more than one wall fractured (41.6%). Permanent infraorbital nerve hypoesthesia was observed in two patients (8.3%), enophthalmos occurred in five patients (20.8%), and exophthalmos was found in two patients (8.3%). Four patients (16.6%) still presented evidence of residual prolapsed intraorbital content, and one of those needed further surgical correction; sinusitis occurred in one patient (4.1%). Titanium mesh is a reliable option for orbital reconstruction, despite some complications found in this sample.

It affects especially children and young adults, with the mandible as the most common site, usually in the inferior aspect. Clinically presents as a painless hard swelling intra and/or extra-oral. Radiographic aspects include bone layers new formed, parallel to each other and to the underlying cortical surface, giving the characteristic appearance of "onion skin". Treatment includes elimination of the cause, with or without antibiotics, being restored the facial symmetry of patient. The present article is a clinical case report of chronic osteomyelitis with proliferative periostitis affecting a female 11 year old patient, caused by a caries lesion in the left permanent first molar, that was submissed to a exodontia and the facial symmetry of the patient was restored with management. La osteomielitis crónica con periostitis proliferativa es un tipo de alteración caracterizada por una reacción periosteal exacerbada causada por un estimulo de baja intensidad, generalmente una lesión cariosa con patología periapical asociada. Actúa principalmente en niños y adolescentes con predilección por la región basilar de mandíbula. Clínicamente, se manifiesta a través de un aumento de volumen doloroso intra o extraoral, de consistencia endurecida. Radiográficamente presenta laminas óseas neoformadas, paralelas entre si con superficie cortical, observándose el aspecto típico de "cascara de cebolla". El tratamiento incluye el retiro del factor etiológico con o sin antibioterapia y posterior restablecimiento de la simetría facial del paciente. Este trabajo presenta un caso de osteomielitis crónica con periostitis proliferativa en una paciente de sexo femenino de 11 años de edad, causada por una lesión cariosa en el primer molar inferior izquierdo, quien fue sometida a exodoncia del diente comprometido con posterior restablecimiento de la simetría facial.
