In this study, tungsten disulfide–zinc (WS2-Zn) composite films were generated on polyether ether ketone (PEEK) disks by an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) equipped with a shrouding attachment. The friction and wear properties of the WS2-Zn coatings were intensively investigated by using a rotational ball-on-disk setup under dry sliding and ambient room conditions. In order to gain more information about the lubrication mechanism, the coating areas as deposited and the worn areas (i.e., in the wear track) were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with regard to their chemical composition in depth by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was conducted to obtain precise chemical information from the surface. The results indicated that WS2-Zn coatings significantly improved the tribological properties, exhibiting a coefficient of friction (COF) of <0.2. However, the tribological performance of the coatings is strongly dependent on the plasma process settings (i.e., plasma current, dwell time of the powder particles in the plasma jet), which were tuned to reduce the oxidation by-products of WS2 to a minimum. The COF values achieved of the dry lubricant films were significantly reduced in contrast to the uncoated PEEK by a factor of four. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The selective laser melting process, commonly known as laser‐based powder bed fusion (LB‐PBF), enables the production of structures with unprecedented degrees of freedom that represents an excellent condition for development of metallic implants for biomedical applications. Herein, the effects of laser energy density on relative density and microstructure (presence of internal defects) of cp‐TiGd2 fabricated by LB‐PBF are studied. Additionally, the influence of printing orientation and different surface treatments on surface topography and biocompatibility are investigated. The aim of the research is to develop additive manufacturing process parameters that can achieve full density of cp‐TiGd2 with satisfactory biocompatibility, as a low‐cost alternative to biomedical materials such as Ti–6Al–4 V and Ti–6Al–7Nb. A wide range variation of process parameters leads to an optimized process with high density up to 99.97 ± 0.008%, improved surface roughness, and noncytotoxicity in horizontal and inclined as‐built condition, as well as in Al2O3 (blasting angle 0°) condition. Nowadays many materials such as steels, aluminium and titanium alloys can be realised by powder bed solutions melting subsequently powder layers by means of a laser or electron beam (Laser Beam Melting – LBM and Electron Beam Melting – EBM). The microstructure realised by layer-by-layer solidification having high cooling rate cannot be considered isotropic. Therefore, the mechanical properties could be influenced by the building direction. Regarding maraging steel, the study of the influence of the building direction and the heat treatment on the static and axial fatigue strength has been investigated in a previous contribution. A large scatter of the fatigue test results was found because of the presence of detrimental surface and subsurface defects. The aim of this contribution is to present additional axial fatigue test results of maraging steel characterized by different build orientation and providing an analysis of the defects observed at the crack initiation area of the fracture surface.

PEEK is a medical grade material which is increasingly used instead of titanium in osteosynthesis and joint replacement. However, its surface properties of PEEKlack on an adequate osteoconductivity. In this study, two coatings with different architectures composed of Ti, Mg and Ag were prepared by physical vacuum deposition to be used in spinal implants. The mechanical durability of the coatings is investigated in terms of their tribological behaviour.

A novel approach for the direct detection of oxidizing agents in aqueous solution is presented using diamond-like carbon (DLC) protected waveguides in combination with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) mid-infrared spectroscopy. Pulsed laser deposition was applied to produce high-quality DLC thin films on ZnSe ATR crystals with thicknesses of a few 100 nm. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to investigate the surface properties of the DLC films including the [sp.sup.3]/[sp.sup.2] hybridization ratio of the carbon bonds. Beside excellent adhesion of the DLC coatings to ZnSe crystals, these films show high chemical stability against strongly oxidizing agents. IR microscopy was utilized to compare differences in the chemical surface modification of bare and protected ATR waveguides when exposed to hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, and peroxydisulfuric acid. The feasibility of DLC protected waveguides for real-time concentration monitoring of these oxidizing agents was demonstrated by measuring calibration sets in a concentration range of 0.2-10%. Additionally, principal component regression has been applied to analyze multicomponent mixtures of hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid, and peracetic acid in aqueous solution. Due to high chemical stability and accurate monitoring capabilities, DLC protected waveguides represent a novel approach for directly detecting oxidizing agents in aqueous solution with promising potential for industrial process analysis.
