3. Investigation of finite-volume methods to capture shocks and turbulence spectra in compressible flows

Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to provide a comparison between several finitevolume methods of different numerical accuracy: the second-order Godunov method with PPM interpolation and the high-order finite-volume WENO method. The results show that while on a smooth problem the high-order method performs better than the second-order one, when the solution contains a shock all the methods collapse to first-order accuracy. In the context of the decay of compressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence with shocklets, the actual overall order of accuracy of the methods reduces to second-order, despite the use of fifth-order reconstruction schemes at cell interfaces. Most important, results in terms of turbulent spectra are similar regardless of the numerical methods employed, except that the PPM method fails to provide an accurate representation in the high-frequency range of the spectra. It is found that this specific issue comes from the slope-limiting procedure and a novel hybrid PPM/WENO method is developed that has the ability to capture the turbulent spectra with the accuracy of a high-order method, but at the cost of the second-order Godunov method. Overall, it is shown that virtually the same physical solution can be obtained much faster by refining a simulation with the second-order method and carefully chosen numerical procedures, rather than running a coarse high-order simulation. Our results demonstrate the importance of evaluating the accuracy of a numerical method in terms of its actual spectral dissipation and dispersion properties on mixed smooth/shock cases, rather than by the theoretical formal order of convergence rate.

6. Business school doctoral programs and the future of business research

Abstract

We apply a neo-institutional theoretical lens to interpret the extent of any significant similarities or differences in doctoral programmes across business schools in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). Overall, we characterise the state of doctoral education in business as lacking adequate funding, primarily attracting students with limited professional or industrial experience but having diverse approaches to the role of formal training as part of the doctoral programme. Although we view these findings as somewhat inevitable given institutional and isomorphic pressures, they are of concern if ANZ business schools are to produce research that is both rigorous and relevant beyond the academy. Comparisons across institutional groupings and discipline areas largely suggest relatively common approaches to doctoral programme design and administration across and within institutions. 7. Does active participation via integrated questions in large lectures matter?

Abstract

This paper investigates whether the intensity of participation in large lecture quizzes in a tertiary education context, facilitated and monitored by an online platform, is associated with better examination performance. The platform mirrors lecture slides onto student devices and uses integrated "clicker" style questions within the lecture to quiz students on concepts learned. Using regression, we find that the intensity of quiz participation is positively related to students' performance. Student study perceptions, based on study and career plans, moderate the results. These findings are relevant to educators, especially in a post-COVID-19 learning environment, where the online quiz function could be used to foster participation.

9. Terahertz parametric amplification as a reporter of exciton condensate dynamic

Abstract

Condensates are a hallmark of emergence in quantum materials with superconductors and charge density wave as prominent examples. An excitonic insulator (EI) is an intriguing addition to this library, exhibiting spontaneous condensation of electron-hole pairs. However, condensate observables can be obscured through parasitic coupling to the lattice. Time-resolved terahertz (THz) spectroscopy can disentangle such obscurants through measurement of the quantum dynamics. We target Ta2NiSe5, a putative room-temperature EI where electron-lattice coupling dominates the structural transition (Tc=326 K), hindering identification of excitonic correlations. A pronounced increase in the THz reflectivity manifests following photoexcitation and exhibits a BEC-like temperature dependence. This occurs well below the Tc, suggesting a novel approach to monitor exciton condensate dynamics. Nonetheless, dynamic condensate-phonon coupling remains as evidenced by peaks in the enhanced reflectivity spectrum at select infrared-active phonon frequencies. This indicates that parametric reflectivity enhancement arises from phonon squeezing, validated using Fresnel-Floquet theory and density functional calculations. Our results highlight that coherent dynamics can drive parametric stimulated emission with concomitant possibilities, including entangled THz photon generation.

10. Weathering the economic storm together: Family identification predicts future well-being during COVID-19 via enhanced financial resilience

Abstract

The economic crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic has placed considerable financial pressures on households across the world. These are compounded by the enforced isolation accompanying pandemic restrictions, during which individuals can struggle to access external assistance and often need to rely heavily on the social, emotional, and financial support of other family members. Previous research indicates that family financial stress has negative consequences for the mental health and wellbeing of members, but that heightened family identification can provide individuals with a stronger sense of collective financial resilience. In the present study, an online longitudinal survey of UK residents (N=172) shows that, in summer 2020, the positive relationship between individuals’ family identification and their wellbeing one month later was mediated by levels of perceived family financial efficacy and financial stress. These findings build upon existing evidence of the pivotal role of the family in financial wellbeing and suggest that supporting family units to cope with shared financial challenges may have psychological benefits over and above supporting individual family members.

11. Who helps and why? A longitudinal exploration of volunteer role identity, between‐group closeness, and community identification as predictors of coordinated helping during the COVID‐19 pandemic

Abstract

Mutual aid groups have allowed community members to respond collectively to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing essential support to the vulnerable. While research has begun to explore the benefits of participating in these groups, there is a lack of work investigating who is likely to engage in this form of aid-giving, although early accounts suggest that existing volunteers have played a significant part in the mutual aid phenomena. Taking a social identity approach, the present study sought to identify what social psychological processes predict this continued engagement by exploring predictors of coordinated COVID-19 aid-giving for pre-existing volunteers. A two-wave longitudinal online survey study (N = 214) revealed that volunteer role identity among existing volunteers at T1 (pre-pandemic) was positively associated with volunteer-beneficiary between-group closeness at T1, which in turn was positively associated with community identification at T1. This in turn positively predicted coordinated COVID-19 aid-giving at T2 (3 months later). This paper therefore reveals the intra- and intergroup predictors of pandemic-related coordinated aid-giving in pre-existing volunteers. Implications for voluntary organisations and emergency voluntary aid provision are discussed.

Abstract

The safe, highly effective measles vaccine has been recommended globally since 1974, yet in 2017 there were more than 17 million cases of measles and 83,400 deaths in children under 5 years old, and more than 99% of both occurred in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)1–4. Globally comparable, annual, local estimates of routine first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) coverage are critical for understanding geographically precise immunity patterns, progress towards the targets of the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), and high-risk areas amid disruptions to vaccination programmes caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)5–8. Here we generated annual estimates of routine childhood MCV1 coverage at 5 × 5-km2 pixel and second administrative levels from 2000 to 2019 in 101 LMICs, quantified geographical inequality and assessed vaccination status by geographical remoteness. After widespread MCV1 gains from 2000 to 2010, coverage regressed in more than half of the districts between 2010 and 2019, leaving many LMICs far from the GVAP goal of 80% coverage in all districts by 2019. MCV1 coverage was lower in rural than in urban locations, although a larger proportion of unvaccinated children overall lived in urban locations; strategies to provide essential vaccination services should address both geographical contexts. These results provide a tool for decision-makers to strengthen routine MCV1 immunization programmes and provide equitable disease protection for all children., Although progress in the coverage of routine measles vaccination in children in low- and middle-income countries was made during 2000–2019, many countries remain far from the goal of 80% coverage in all districts by 2019.

Abstract

Living with an eating disorder is a significant challenge facing many Irish people. Previous research revealed that services in Ireland were under-developed, under resourced, and ill-equipped to provide the necessary care for people with eating disorders (PWED) and their families. The National Clinical Programme for Eating Disorders (NCP-ED) was established to address these service gaps and published its model of care in 2018.\ud \ud A key element in the planning and provision of care for PWED is to understand the factors which contribute to positive (and negative) service user experiences, and the satisfaction factors for those who access the services. The current research, commissioned by Bodywhys, supported by the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) and conducted by Nottingham Trent University, was designed to establish a picture of service user experiences prior to the full implementation of the NCP-ED and to identify strengths in healthcare provision as well as areas for development. It is hoped that the findings detailed in this report will prove to be a valuable learning resource for all those involved in delivering care and support to PWED and their families.\ud \ud This research employed a mixed-methods design comprising interviews and online surveys with carers and people who were receiving (or had recently received) treatment and/or support for an eating disorder. 46 people (21 carers and 25 PWED) participated in interviews and 164 people (82 carers and 82 PWED) completed online surveys. Participants reported a diverse range of eating disorder diagnoses and accessed services across Ireland (with a small number travelling to the UK for treatment in addition to receiving care in Ireland).\ud \ud Our key findings are grouped into three main areas of enquiry in this report: (1) PWED and carer service user experiences, (2) PWED and carer psychosocial health and well-being, and (3) PWED and carers’ day-to-day experiences of living with an eating disorder.\ud \ud We hope these findings will help to inform future service developments. We recommend, following wider implementation of the NCP-ED, that a follow-up to this research is conducted to ascertain any changes to the service user experiences and outcomes for PWED and their carers.

32. Adapting social prescribing to meet the needs of migrant populations: challenges and solutions to service access and effectiveness

Abstract

Experiences of international migrants in host countries are very diverse. However, many migrants face cumulative challenges to their health and wellbeing which can be best supported by health initiatives aiming to a) address needs derived from socio-political context where they live and b) increase meaningful connection with community. This paper discussed the value and challenges of using one such health initiative to support the needs of vulnerable migration populations: ‘Social Prescribing’. Data was collected from two roundtables with forty participants from organisations working with migrants in the UK and those with lived experience of migration and analysed using thematic analysis. Several challenges to accessing health support were identified including issues around acceptability, appropriateness, and quality of care. Participants emphasised the importance of holistic and culturally appropriate approaches which address health needs while recognising legal, economic and other challenges migrants face. To successfully implement initiatives such as Social Prescribing, there needs to be flexibility, shared understanding between service users and providers, community buy-in, attention to safeguarding and direct involvement of migrants in their development and implementation.

Abstract

The safe, highly effective measles vaccine has been recommended globally since 1974, yet in 2017 there were more than 17 million cases of measles and 83,400 deaths in children under 5 years old, and more than 99% of both occurred in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)1-4. Globally comparable, annual, local estimates of routine first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) coverage are critical for understanding geographically precise immunity patterns, progress towards the targets of the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), and high-risk areas amid disruptions to vaccination programmes caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)5-8. Here we generated annual estimates of routine childhood MCV1 coverage at 5 x 5-km2 pixel and second administrative levels from 2000 to 2019 in 101 LMICs, quantified geographical inequality and assessed vaccination status by geographical remoteness. After widespread MCV1 gains from 2000 to 2010, coverage regressed in more than half of the districts between 2010 and 2019, leaving many LMICs far from the GVAP goal of 80% coverage in all districts by 2019. MCV1 coverage was lower in rural than in urban locations, although a larger proportion of unvaccinated children overall lived in urban locations; strategies to provide essential vaccination services should address both geographical contexts. These results provide a tool for decision-makers to strengthen routine MCV1 immunization programmes and provide equitable disease protection for all children.Copyright © 2020, The Author(s).

34. On the numerical accuracy in finite-volume methods to accurately capture turbulence in compressible flows

Abstract

The goal of the present article is to understand the impact of numerical schemes for the reconstruction of data at cell faces in finite-volume methods, and to assess their interaction with the quadrature rule used to compute the average over the cell volume. Here, third-, fifth- and seventh-order WENO-Z schemes are investigated. On a problem with a smooth solution, the theoretical order of convergence rate for each method is retrieved, and changing the order of the reconstruction at cell faces does not impact the results, whereas for a shock-driven problem all the methods collapse to first-order. Study of the decay of compressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence reveals that using a high-order quadrature rule to compute the average over a finite-volume cell does not improve the spectral accuracy and that all methods present a second-order convergence rate. However the choice of the numerical method to reconstruct data at cell faces is found to be critical to correctly capture turbulent spectra. In the context of simulations with finite-volume methods of practical flows encountered in engineering applications, it becomes apparent that an efficient strategy is to perform the average integration with a low-order quadrature rule on a fine mesh resolution, whereas high-order schemes should be used to reconstruct data at cell faces.

Abstract

© 2019 This study examines to what extent the use of social networking sites impacts different levels of learning. In particular, we examine how post-secondary students' general academic achievement, reflected by grade point average scores, moderate these impacts. The impacts of social networking noted in the literature vary considerably, with positive and negative implications on student learning noted. Examining the moderating effects of students' general academic achievement may address the reasons for such inconsistency in impacts observed. To better understand the implications of social networking on student learning, we examine the implications of student time spent in total on Facebook and on different reasons for using Facebook through a series of ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions. The data on students' social networking use is collected via a survey and data retrieved from institution records on student performance. The context of this study is a first year equation and problem solving centric subject, consistent with the subject matter emphasised in business and STEM disciplines. The findings indicate social networking use puts students at risk who are generally lower academic achievers; in particular their performance is lower across the least difficult levels of learning performance with greater Facebook use. In contrast the performance of higher academic achievers is not significantly impacted. The findings highlight the importance of considering students' general academic achievement as a moderator of the relationship between social networking use and learning performance, and also the importance of considering the impact on specific levels of learning.
