We present a comprehensive analysis of the observed Stellar-to-Halo mass relationship (SHMR) spanning redshifts from 0.2 to 4.5. This was enabled through galaxy clustering and abundance measurements from two large (effective area ~ 1.61 deg^2) and homogeneously prepared photometric catalogs - UltraVISTA ultra-deep stripes DR3 (COSMOS) and FENIKS v1 (UDS). To translate these measurements into the SHMR, we introduce a novel halo occupation distribution (HOD) fitting approach (``smooth-$z$'') whereby HOD parameters between neighboring z-bins are connected via physically motivated continuity (smoothing) priors. As a result, the high constraining power at z <~ 2, due to a much wider dynamical range in stellar mass (~ 3 dex), helps constrain the SHMR at z >~ 2, where that range shrinks down to <~ 1 dex. We find that the halo mass is tightly coupled to star formation: the halo mass with peak integrated star-forming efficiency (SFE), M_h^peak remains constant within ~ 10^12.2 - 10^12.4 Msolar throughout the redshifts probed. Furthermore, we show that if we had relied on COSMOS alone (as opposed to COSMOS+UDS), as has been done by many preceding studies, M_h^peak would be systematically lower by up to ~0.15 dex at z < 1.5, highlighting the importance of mitigating cosmic variance. We present a study of the growth of the quiescent galaxy population between 0.5 < z < 3 by tracing the number density and structural evolution of a sample of 4518 old and 583 young quiescent galaxies with log($M_*$/$M_{\odot}$)>10.4, selected from the COSMOS2020 catalog with complementary HST/F160W imaging from the 3D-DASH survey. Among the quiescent population at z$\sim$2, roughly 50% are recently quenched galaxies; these young quiescent galaxies become increasingly rare towards lower redshift, supporting the idea that the peak epoch of massive galaxy quenching occurred at z>2. Our data show that while the effective half-light radii of quiescent galaxies generally increases with time, young quiescent galaxies are significantly smaller than their older counterparts at the same redshift. In this work we investigate the connection between this size difference and other structural properties, including axis ratios, color gradients, stellar mass, and the intrinsic scatter in effective radii. We demonstrate that the size difference is driven by the most massive sub-population (log($M_*$/$M_{\odot}$)>11) and does not persist when restricting the sample to intermediate mass galaxies (10.4

We present the construction of a deep multi-wavelength PSF-matched photometric catalog in the UDS field following the final UKIDSS UDS DR11 release. The catalog includes photometry in 24 filters, from the MegaCam-uS (0.38 microns) band to the Spitzer-IRAC (8 microns) band, over ~ 0.9 sq. deg. and with a 5-sigma depth of 25.3 AB in the K-band detection image. The catalog, containing approximately 188,564 (136,235) galaxies at 0.2 < z < 8.0 with stellar mass > 10$^{8}$ solar masses and K-band total magnitude K < 25.2 (24.3) AB, enables a range of extragalactic studies. We also provide photometric redshifts, corresponding redshift probability distributions, and rest-frame absolute magnitudes and colors derived using the template-fitting code eazy-py. Photometric redshift errors are less than 3 to 4 percent at z < 4 across the full brightness range in K-band and stellar mass range 10$^{8}$-10$^{12}$ solar masses. We have carried out HST snapshot observations at 1.1 $\mu$m of 281 candidate strongly lensed galaxies identified in the wide-area extragalactic surveys conducted with the Herschel space observatory. Our candidates comprise systems with flux densities at $500\,\mu$m$ S_{500}\geq 80$ mJy. We model and subtract the surface brightness distribution for 130 systems, where we identify a candidate for the foreground lens candidate. After combining visual inspection, archival high-resolution observations, and lens subtraction, we divide the systems into different classes according to their lensing likelihood. We confirm 65 systems to be lensed. Of these, 30 are new discoveries. We successfully perform lens modelling and source reconstruction on 23 systems, where the foreground lenses are isolated galaxies and the background sources are detected in the HST images. All the systems are successfully modelled as a singular isothermal ellipsoid. The Einstein radii of the lenses and the magnifications of the background sources are consistent with previous studies. However, the background source circularised radii (between 0.34 kpc and 1.30 kpc) are $\sim$3 times smaller than the ones measured in the sub-mm/mm for a similarly selected and partially overlapping sample. We compare our lenses with those in the SLACS survey, confirming that our lens-independent selection is more effective at picking up fainter and diffuse galaxies and group lenses. We analyze the cool gas in and around 14 nearby galaxies (at $z$$<$0.1) mapped with the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey by measuring absorption lines produced by gas in spectra of background quasars/AGN at impact parameters of 0-25 effective radii from the galaxy center. Using HST/COS, we detect absorption at the galaxy redshift and measure or constrain column densities of neutral (H I, N I, O I, Ar I), low-ionization (Si II, S II, C II, N II Fe II), and high-ionization (Si III, Fe III, N V, O VI) species for 11 galaxies. We derive the ionization parameter and ionization-corrected metallicity using CLOUDY photo-ionization models. The H I column density ranges from $\sim$$10^{13}$ to $\sim$$10^{20}\,{\rm cm^{-2}}$ and decreases with impact parameter for $r \ge R_{e}$. Galaxies with higher stellar mass have weaker H I absorption. Comparing absorption velocities with MaNGA radial velocity maps of ionized gas line emissions in galactic disks, we find that the neutral gas seen in absorption co-rotates with the disk out to $\sim$10 $R_{e}$. Sight lines with lower elevation angles show lower metallicities, consistent with the metallicity gradient in the disk derived from MaNGA maps. Higher elevation angle sight lines show higher ionization, lower H I-column density, super-solar metallicity, and velocities consistent with the direction of galactic outflow. Our data offer the first detailed comparisons of CGM properties (kinematics and metallicity) with extrapolations of detailed galaxy maps from integral field spectroscopy; similar studies for larger samples are needed to more fully understand how galaxies interact with their CGM., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 49 pages, 36 figures

We analyse the joint distribution of dust attenuation and projected axis ratios, together with galaxy size and surface brightness profile information, to infer lessons on the dust content and star/dust geometry within star-forming galaxies at 0 < z <2.5. To do so, we make use of large observational datasets from KiDS+VIKING+HSC-SSP and extend the analysis out to redshift z = 2.5 using the HST surveys CANDELS and 3D-DASH. We construct suites of SKIRT radiative transfer models for idealized galaxies observed under random viewing angles with the aim of reproducing the aforementioned distributions, including the level and inclination dependence of dust attenuation. We find that attenuation-based dust mass estimates are at odds with constraints from far-infrared observations, especially at higher redshifts, when assuming smooth star and dust geometries of equal extent. We demonstrate that UV-to-near-IR and far-infrared constraints can be reconciled by invoking clumpier dust geometries for galaxies at higher redshifts and/or very compact dust cores. We discuss implications for the significant wavelength- and redshift-dependent differences between half-light and half-mass radii that result from spatially varying dust columns within -- especially massive -- star-forming galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present measurements of the dependence of the clustering amplitude of galaxies on their star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($M_*$) at $0.7 < z < 1.5$ to assess the extent to which environment affects these properties. While these relations are well determined in the local universe, they are much more poorly known at earlier times. For this analysis we make use of the near-IR HST WFC3 grism spectroscopic data in the five CANDELS fields obtained as part of the 3D-HST survey. We make projected 2-point correlation function measurements using $\sim$6,000 galaxies with accurate redshifts, $M_*$ and H$\alpha$ luminosities. We find a strong dependence of clustering amplitude on H$\alpha$ luminosity and thus SFR. However, at fixed $M_*$, the clustering dependence on H$\alpha$ luminosity is largely eliminated. We model the clustering of these galaxies within the Halo Occupation Distribution framework using the conditional luminosity function model and the newly developed conditional stellar mass and H$\alpha$ luminosity distribution model. These show that galaxies with higher SFRs tend to live in higher mass haloes, but this is largely driven by the relationship between SFR and $M_*$. Finally, we show that the small residual correlation between clustering amplitude and H$\alpha$ luminosity at fixed $M_*$ is likely being driven by a broadening of the SFR-$M_*$ relationship for satellite galaxies.

The 3D-Drift And SHift (3D-DASH) program is a \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} WFC3 F160W imaging and G141 grism survey of the equatorial COSMOS field. 3D-DASH extends the legacy of HST near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy to degree-scale swaths of the sky, enabling the identification and study of distant galaxies ($z>2$) that are rare or in short-lived phases of galaxy evolution at rest-frame optical wavelengths. We analyze spatially resolved and co-added SDSS-IV MaNGA spectra with signal-to-noise ~100 from 2200 passive central galaxies (z~0.05) to understand how central galaxy assembly depends on stellar mass (M*) and halo mass (Mh). We control for systematic errors in Mh by employing a new group catalog from Tinker (2020a,b) and the widely-used Yang et al. (2007) catalog. At fixed M*, the strength of several stellar absorption features varies systematically with Mh. Completely model-free, this is one of the first indications that the stellar populations of centrals with identical M* are affected by the properties of their host halos. To interpret these variations, we applied full spectral fitting with the code alf. At fixed M*, centrals in more massive halos are older, show lower [Fe/H], and have higher [Mg/Fe] with 3.5 sigma confidence. We conclude that halos not only dictate how much M* galaxies assemble, but also modulate their chemical enrichment histories. Turning to our analysis at fixed Mh, high-M* centrals are older, show lower [Fe/H], and have higher [Mg/Fe] for Mh>10^{12}Msun/h with confidence > 4 sigma. While massive passive galaxies are thought to form early and rapidly, our results are among the first to distinguish these trends at fixed Mh. They suggest that high-M* centrals experienced unique early formation histories, either through enhanced collapse and gas fueling, or because their halos were early-forming and highly concentrated, a possible signal of galaxy assembly bias., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 28 pages and 12 figures

This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. We present the first results from a Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/IR program, which obtained direct imaging and grism observations of galaxies near quasar sightlines with a high frequency of uncorrelated foreground Mg II absorption. These highly efficient observations targeted 54 Mg II absorbers along the line of sight to nine quasars at $z_{qso}\sim2$. We find that 89% of the absorbers in the range $0.64< z < 1.6$ can be spectroscopically matched to at least one galaxy with an impact parameter less than 200 kpc and $|\Delta z|/(1+z)<0.006$. We have estimated the star formation rates and measured structural parameters for all detected galaxies with impact parameters in the range 7-200 kpc and star formation rates greater than 1.3 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We find that galaxies associated with Mg II absorption have significantly higher mean star formation rates and marginally higher mean star formation rate surface densities compared to galaxies with no detected Mg II. Nearly half of the Mg II absorbers match to more than one galaxy, and the mean equivalent width of the Mg II absorption is found to be greater for groups, compared to isolated galaxies. Additionally, we observe a significant redshift evolution in the physical extent of Mg II-absorbing gas around galaxies and evidence of an enhancement of Mg II within 50 degrees of the minor axis, characteristic of outflows, which persists to 80 kpc around the galaxies, in agreement with recent predictions from simulations., Comment: 21 pages, 20 figures, Submitted to ApJ

We analyse two-dimensional maps and radial profiles of EW(H$\alpha$), EW(H$\delta_A$), and D$_n$(4000) of low-redshift galaxies using integral field spectroscopy from the MaNGA survey. Out of $\approx1400$ nearly face-on late-type galaxies with a redshift $z<0.05$, we identify 121 "turnover" galaxies that each have a central upturn in EW(H$\alpha$), EW(H$\delta_A$) and/or a central drop in D$_n$(4000), indicative of ongoing/recent star formation. The turnover features are found mostly in galaxies with a stellar mass above $\sim$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and NUV-$r$ colour less than $\approx5$. The majority of the turnover galaxies are barred, with a bar fraction of 89$\pm$3\%. Furthermore, for barred galaxies the radius of the central turnover region is found to tightly correlate with one third of the bar length. Comparing the observed and the inward extrapolated star formation rate surface density, we estimate that the central SFR have been enhanced by an order of magnitude. Conversely, only half of the barred galaxies in our sample have a central turnover feature, implying that the presence of a bar is not sufficient to lead to a central SF enhancement. We further examined the SF enhancement in paired galaxies, as well as the local environment, finding no relation. This implies that environment is not a driving factor for central SF enhancement in our sample. Our results reinforce both previous findings and theoretical expectation that galactic bars play a crucial role in the secular evolution of galaxies by driving gas inflow and enhancing the star formation and bulge growth in the center., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, MNRAS accepted

This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). We investigate the environmental dependence of the local gas-phase metallicity in a sample of star-forming galaxies from the MaNGA survey. Satellite galaxies with stellar masses in the range $9<\log(M_{*}/M_{\odot})<10$ are found to be $\sim 0.05 \, \mathrm{dex}$ higher in metallicity than centrals of similar stellar mass. Within the low-mass satellite population, we find that the interstellar medium (ISM) metallicity depends most strongly on the stellar mass of the galaxy that is central to the halo, though there is no obvious difference in the metallicity gradients. At fixed total stellar mass, the satellites of high mass ($M_{*}>10^{10.5} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) centrals are $\sim 0.1 \, \mathrm{dex}$ more metal rich than satellites of low-mass ($M_{*} < 10^{10} \, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) centrals, controlling for local stellar mass surface density and gas fraction. Fitting a gas-regulator model to the spaxel data, we are able to account for variations in the local gas fraction, stellar mass surface density and local escape velocity-dependent outflows. We find that the best explanation for the metallicity differences is the variation in the average metallicity of accreted gas between different environments that depends on the stellar mass of the dominant galaxies in each halo. We present a method of fitting optical spectra of galaxies using a basis set of six vectors obtained from principal component analysis (PCA) of a library of synthetic spectra of 40000 star formation histories (SFHs). Using this library, we provide estimates of resolved effective stellar mass-to-light ratio ($\log \Upsilon^*$) for thousands of galaxies from the SDSS-IV/MaNGA integral-field spectroscopic survey. Using a testing framework built on additional synthetic SFHs, we show that the estimates of stellar mass-to-light ratio are reliable (as are their uncertainties) at a variety of signal-to-noise ratios, stellar metallicities, and dust attenuation conditions. Finally, we describe the future release of the resolved stellar mass-to-light ratios as a SDSS-IV/MaNGA Value-Added Catalog (VAC) and provide a link to the software used to conduct this analysis.

A galaxy's stellar mass is one of its most fundamental properties, but it remains challenging to measure reliably. With the advent of very large optical spectroscopic surveys, efficient methods that can make use of low signal-to-noise spectra are needed. With this in mind, we created a new software package for estimating effective stellar mass-to-light ratios $\log \Upsilon^*$ that uses principal component analysis(PCA) basis set to optimize the comparison between observed spectra and a large library of stellar population synthesis models. In Paper I, we showed that a with a set of six PCA basis vectors we could faithfully represent most optical spectra from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey;and we tested the accuracy of our M/L estimates using synthetic spectra. Here, we explore sources of systematic error in our mass measurements by comparing our new measurements to data from the literature. We compare our stellar mass surface density estimates to kinematics-derived dynamical mass surface density measurements from the DiskMass Survey and find some tension between the two which could be resolved if the disk scale-heights used in the kinematic analysis were overestimated by a factor of $\sim 1.5$. We formulate an aperture-corrected stellar mass catalog for the MaNGA survey, and compare to previous stellar mass estimates based on multi-band optical photometry, finding typical discrepancies of 0.1 dex. Using the spatially resolved MaNGA data, we evaluate the impact of estimating total stellar masses from spatially unresolved spectra, and we explore how the biases that result from unresolved spectra depend upon the galaxy's dust extinction and star formation rate. Finally, we describe a SDSS Value-Added Catalog which will include both spatially resolved and total (aperture-corrected) stellar masses for MaNGA galaxies.

Twenty years have passed since first light for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we release data taken by the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV) across its first three years of operation (July 2014-July 2017). This is the third data release for SDSS-IV, and the fifteenth from SDSS (Data Release Fifteen; DR15). New data come from MaNGA - we release 4824 datacubes, as well as the first stellar spectra in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), the first set of survey-supported analysis products (e.g. stellar and gas kinematics, emission line, and other maps) from the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP), and a new data visualisation and access tool we call "Marvin". The next data release, DR16, will include new data from both APOGEE-2 and eBOSS; those surveys release no new data here, but we document updates and corrections to their data processing pipelines. The release is cumulative; it also includes the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since first light. In this paper we describe the location and format of the data and tools and cite technical references describing how it was obtained and processed. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has also been updated, providing links to data downloads, tutorials and examples of data use. While SDSS-IV will continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V (2020-2025), we end this paper by describing plans to ensure the sustainability of the SDSS data archive for many years beyond the collection of data., Comment: Paper to accompany DR15. 25 pages, 6 figures. A new class of quiescent galaxies harboring possible AGN-driven winds has been discovered using spatially resolved optical spectroscopy from the ongoing SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. These galaxies, termed "red geysers", constitute $5-10\%$ of the local quiescent population and are characterized by narrow bisymmetric patterns in ionized gas emission features. Cheung et al. argued that these galaxies host large-scale AGN-driven winds that may play a role in suppressing star formation at late times. In this work, we test the hypothesis that AGN activity is ultimately responsible for the red geyser phenomenon. We compare the nuclear radio activity of the red geysers to a matched control sample with similar stellar mass, redshift, rest frame $NUV-r$ color, axis ratio and presence of ionized gas. We have used the 1.4 GHz radio continuum data from VLA FIRST survey to stack the radio flux from the red geyser and control samples. In addition to a 3 times higher FIRST detection rate, we find that red geysers have a 5$\sigma$ higher level of average radio flux than control galaxies. After restricting to rest-frame $NUV-r$ color $>$ 5 and checking mid-IR WISE photometry, we rule out star formation contamination and conclude that red geysers are associated with more active AGN. Red geysers and a possibly-related class with disturbed H$\alpha$ emission account for 40\% of all radio-detected red galaxies with $\rm log~(M_\star/M_\odot) < 11$. The stellar content of the intracluster light (ICL) provides unique insight into the hierarchical assembly process of galaxy clusters.However, the ICL is difficult to study due to its low surface brightness and large physical extent. We present optical spectra of three ICL regions in the Coma cluster, located between 100-180kpc from their nearest BCGs: NGC4889 and NGC4874. The mean surface brightness of the three ICL regions are {\mu}$_g$~25.3-26.2mag arcsec$^{-2}$. IFU spectroscopy with 13.5 hr on-source integration time were acquired as part of an ancillary program within the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. We stacked the 127 individual fiber spectra in each IFU in order to achieve a 1{\sigma} limiting surface brightness of 27.9mag arcsec$^{-2}$, corresponding to a mean S/N in the optical of 21.6,9.6,and 11.6\AA$^{-1}$. We apply stellar population models to the stacked spectra, and measure the recession velocities, velocity dispersions ($\sigma$), stellar ages, and [Fe/H]. Our results show that the $\sigma$ of ICL regions are very high, indicating the stars are tracing the gravitational potential of the cluster, instead of any individual galaxy. The line-of-sight velocities of the three ICL regions are different from each other by ~700km/s, while the velocity of each region is similar to the closest BCG. This suggests that the ICL regions are associated with two distinct subclusters centered on NGC4889 and NGC4874.The stellar populations of these regions are old and metal poor, with ages of 7-12Gyr, and [Fe/H] of -0.8 to -0.6 dex. From the derived age and [Fe/H], the build-up of ICL in Coma is likely to be through the accretion of low mass galaxies or the tidal stripping of the outskirts of massive galaxies that have ended their star formation early on, instead of directly from major mergers of massive galaxies., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures. The IRAC mapping of the NMBS-II fields program is an imaging survey at 3.6 and 4.5$\mu$m with the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). The observations cover three Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey Deep (CFHTLS-D) fields, including one also imaged by AEGIS, and two MUSYC fields. These are then combined with archival data from all previous programs into deep mosaics. The resulting imaging covers a combined area of about 3 $deg^2$, with at least $\sim$2 hr integration time for each field. In this work, we present our data reduction techniques and document the resulting coverage maps at 3.6 and 4.5$\mu$m. All of the images are W-registered to the reference image, which is either the z-band stack image of the 25\% best seeing images from the CFHTLS-D for CFHTLS-D1, CFHTLS-D3, and CFHTLS-D4, or the K-band images obtained at the Blanco 4-m telescope at CTIO for MUSYC1030 and MUSYC1255. JINGLE is a new JCMT legacy survey designed to systematically study the cold interstellar medium of galaxies in the local Universe. As part of the survey we perform 850um continuum measurements with SCUBA-2 for a representative sample of 193 Herschel-selected galaxies with M*>10^9Msun, as well as integrated CO(2-1) line fluxes with RxA3m for a subset of 90 of these galaxies. The sample is selected from fields covered by the Herschel-ATLAS survey that are also targeted by the MaNGA optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The new JCMT observations combined with the multi-wavelength ancillary data will allow for the robust characterization of the properties of dust in the nearby Universe, and the benchmarking of scaling relations between dust, gas, and global galaxy properties. In this paper we give an overview of the survey objectives and details about the sample selection and JCMT observations, present a consistent 30 band UV-to-FIR photometric catalog with derived properties, and introduce the JINGLE Main Data Release (MDR). We present a targeted follow-up Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 F160W imaging study of very massive galaxies $(\log(M_{\rm{star}}/M_{\odot})> 11.2)$ selected from a combination of ground-based near-infrared galaxy surveys (UltraVISTA, NMBS-II, UKIDSS UDS) at $1.5

MaNGA provides the opportunity to make precise spatially resolved measurements of the IMF slope in galaxies owing to its unique combination of spatial resolution, wavelength coverage and sample size. We derive radial gradients in age, element abundances and IMF slope analysing optical and near-infrared absorption features from stacked spectra out to the half-light radius of 366 early-type galaxies with masses $9.9 - 10.8\;\log M/M_{\odot}$. We find flat gradients in age and [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio, as well as negative gradients in metallicity, consistent with the literature. We further derive significant negative gradients in the [Na/Fe] ratio with galaxy centres being well enhanced in Na abundance by up to 0.5 dex. Finally, we find a gradient in IMF slope with a bottom-heavy IMF in the centre (typical mass excess factor of 1.5) and a Milky Way-type IMF at the half-light radius. This pattern is mass-dependent with the lowest mass galaxies in our sample featuring only a shallow gradient around a Milky Way IMF. Our results imply the local IMF-$\sigma$ relation within galaxies to be even steeper than the global relation and hint towards the local metallicity being the dominating factor behind the IMF variations. We also employ different stellar population models in our analysis and show that a radial IMF gradient is found independently of the stellar population model used. A similar analysis of the Wing-Ford band provides inconsistent results and further evidence of the difficulty in measuring and modelling this particular feature., Comment: 28 pages, 24 figures, 9 tables. We present a catalogue of 38 spectroscopically detected strong galaxy-galaxy gravitational lens candidates identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV). We were able to simulate narrow-band images for 8 of them demonstrating evidence of multiple images. Two of our systems are compound lens candidates, each with 2 background source-planes. One of these compound systems shows clear lensing features in the narrow-band image. Our sample is based on 2812 galaxies observed by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) integral field unit (IFU). This Spectroscopic Identification of Lensing Objects (SILO) survey extends the methodology of the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS) and BOSS Emission-Line Survey (BELLS) to lower redshift and multiple IFU spectra. We searched ~ 1.5 million spectra, of which 3065 contained multiple high signal-to-noise background emission-lines or a resolved [OII] doublet, that are included in this catalogue. Upon manual inspection, we discovered regions with multiple spectra containing background emission-lines at the same redshift, providing evidence of a common source-plane geometry which was not possible in previous SLACS and BELLS discovery programs. We estimate more than half of our candidates have an Einstein radius > 1.7", which is significantly greater than seen in SLACS and BELLS. These larger Einstein radii produce more extended images of the background galaxy increasing the probability that a background emission-line will enter one of the IFU spectroscopic fibres, making detection more likely., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, March 8, 2018. We measure $\lambda_{R_e}$, a proxy for galaxy specific stellar angular momentum within one effective radius, and the ellipticity, $\epsilon$, for about 2300 galaxies of all morphological types observed with integral field spectroscopy as part of the MaNGA survey, the largest such sample to date. We use the $(\lambda_{R_e}, \epsilon)$ diagram to separate early-type galaxies into fast and slow rotators. We also visually classify each galaxy according to its optical morphology and two-dimensional stellar velocity field. Comparing these classifications to quantitative $\lambda_{R_e}$ measurements reveals tight relationships between angular momentum and galaxy structure. In order to account for atmospheric seeing, we use realistic models of galaxy kinematics to derive a general approximate analytic correction for $\lambda_{R_e}$. Thanks to the size of the sample and the large number of massive galaxies, we unambiguously detect a clear bimodality in the $(\lambda_{R_e}, \epsilon)$ diagram which may result from fundamental differences in galaxy assembly history. There is a sharp secondary density peak inside the region of the diagram with low $\lambda_{R_e}$ and $\epsilon < 0.4$, previously suggested as the definition for slow rotators. Most of these galaxies are visually classified as non-regular rotators and have high velocity dispersion. The intrinsic bimodality must be stronger, as it tends to be smoothed by noise and inclination. The large sample of slow rotators allows us for the first time to unveil a secondary peak at +/-90 degrees in their distribution of the misalignments between the photometric and kinematic position angles. We have identified 105 galaxy pairs at z ~ 0.04 with the MaNGA integral-field spectroscopic data. The pairs have projected separations between 1 kpc and 30 kpc, and are selected to have radial velocity offsets less than 600 km/s and stellar mass ratio between 0.1 and 1. The pair fraction increases with both the physical size of the integral-field unit and the stellar mass, consistent with theoretical expectations. We provide the best-fit analytical function of the pair fraction and find that ~3% of M* galaxies are in close pairs. For both isolated galaxies and paired galaxies, active galactic nuclei (AGN) are selected using emission-line ratios and H_alpha equivalent widths measured inside apertures at a fixed physical size. We find AGNs in ~24% of the paired galaxies and binary AGNs in ~13% of the pairs. To account for the selection biases in both the pair sample and the MaNGA sample, we compare the AGN comoving volume densities with those expected from the mass- and redshift-dependent AGN fractions. We find a strong (~5x) excess of binary AGNs over random pairing and a mild (~20%) deficit of single AGNs. The binary AGN excess increases from ~2x to ~6x as the projected separation decreases from 10-30 kpc to 1-10 kpc. Our results indicate that pairing of galaxies preserves the AGN duty cycle in individual galaxies but increases the population of binary AGNs through correlated activities. We suggest tidally-induced galactic-scale shocks and AGN cross-ionization as two plausible channels to produce low-luminosity narrow-line-selected binary AGNs., Comment: ApJ in press. The average stellar mass (Mstar) of high-mass galaxies (Mstar > 3e11 Msun) is expected to grow by ~30% since z~1, largely through ongoing mergers that are also invoked to explain the observed increase in galaxy sizes. Direct evidence for the corresponding growth in stellar mass has been elusive, however, in part because the volumes sampled by previous redshift surveys have been too small to yield reliable statistics. In this work, we make use of the Stripe 82 Massive Galaxy Catalog to build a mass-limited sample of 41,770 galaxies (Mstar > 1.6e11) with optical to near-IR photometry and a large fraction (>55%) of spectroscopic redshifts. Our sample spans 139 square degrees, significantly larger than most previous efforts. After accounting for a number of potential systematic errors, including the effects of Mstar scatter, we measure galaxy stellar mass functions over 0.3 < z < 0.65 and detect no growth in the typical Mstar of massive galaxies with an uncertainty of 9%. This confidence level is dominated by uncertainties in the star formation history assumed for Mstar estimates, although our inability to characterize low surface-brightness outskirts may be the most important limitation of our study. Even among these high-mass galaxies, we find evidence for differential evolution when splitting the sample by recent star formation (SF) activity. While low-SF systems appear to become completely passive, we find a mostly sub-dominant population of galaxies with residual, but low rates of star formation (~1 Msun/yr) number density does not evolve. Interestingly, these galaxies become more prominent at higher Mstar, representing ~10% of all galaxies at Mstar ~ 1e12 Msun and perhaps dominating at even larger masses., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

We study the spatially resolved star formation of 1494 galaxies in the SDSSIV-MaNGA Survey. SFRs are calculated using a two-step process, using $H_\alpha$ in star forming regions and $D_n4000$ in regions identified as AGN/LI(N)ER or lineless. The roles of secular and environmental quenching processes are investigated by studying the dependence of the radial profiles of specific star formation rate on stellar mass, galaxy structure and environment. We report on the existence of `Centrally Suppressed' galaxies, which have suppressed SSFR in their cores compared to their disks. The profiles of centrally suppressed and unsuppressed galaxies are distibuted in a bimodal way. Galaxies with high stellar mass and core velocity dispersion are found to be much more likely to be centrally suppressed than low mass galaxies, and we show that this is related to morphology and the presence of AGN/LI(N)ER like emission. Centrally suppressed galaxies also display lower star formation at all radii compared to unsuppressed galaxies. The profiles of central and satellite galaxies are also compared, and we find that satellite galaxies experience lower specific star formation rates at all radii than central galaxies. This uniform suppression could be a signal of the stripping of hot halo gas in the process known as strangulation. We find that satellites are not more likely to be suppressed in their cores than centrals, indicating that the core suppression is an entirely internal process. We study radial profiles in H$\alpha$ equivalent width and specific star formation rate (sSFR) derived from spatially-resolved SDSS-IV MaNGA spectroscopy to gain insight on the physical mechanisms that suppress star formation and determine a galaxy's location in the SFR-$\rm M_\star$ diagram. Even within the star-forming `main sequence', the measured sSFR decreases with stellar mass, both in an integrated and spatially-resolved sense. Flat sSFR radial profiles are observed for $\rm log(M_\star/ M_\odot) < 10.5$, while star-forming galaxies of higher mass show a significant decrease in sSFR in the central regions, a likely consequence of both larger bulges and an inside-out growth history. Our primary focus is the green valley, constituted by galaxies lying below the star formation main sequence, but not fully passive. In the green valley we find sSFR profiles that are suppressed with respect to star-forming galaxies of the same mass at all galactocentric distances out to 2 effective radii. The responsible quenching mechanism therefore appears to affect the entire galaxy, not simply an expanding central region. The majority of green valley galaxies of $\rm log(M_\star/ M_\odot) > 10.0$ are classified spectroscopically as central low-ionisation emission-line regions (cLIERs). Despite displaying a higher central stellar mass concentration, the sSFR suppression observed in cLIER galaxies is not simply due to the larger mass of the bulge. Drawing a comparison sample of star forming galaxies with the same $\rm M_\star$ and $\rm \Sigma_{1~kpc}$ (the mass surface density within 1 kpc), we show that a high $\rm \Sigma_{1~kpc}$ is not a sufficient condition for determining central quiescence., Comment: accepted in MNRAS

A large population of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) was recently discovered in the Coma cluster. Here we present optical spectra of three such UDGs, DF7, DF44 and DF17, which have central surface brightnesses of $\mu_g \approx 24.4-25.1$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$. The spectra were acquired as part of an ancillary program within the SDSS-IV MaNGA Survey. We stacked 19 fibers in the central regions from larger integral field units (IFUs) per source. With over 13.5 hours of on-source integration we achieved a mean signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in the optical of $9.5$\AA$^{-1}$, $7.9$\AA$^{-1}$ and $5.0$\AA$^{-1}$, respectively, for DF7, DF44 and DF17. Stellar population models applied to these spectra enable measurements of recession velocities, ages and metallicities. The recession velocities of DF7, DF44 and DF17 are $6599^{+40}_{-25}$km/s, $6402^{+41}_{-39}$km/s and $8315^{+43}_{-43}$km/s, spectroscopically confirming that all of them reside in the Coma cluster. The stellar populations of these three galaxies are old and metal-poor, with ages of $7.9^{+3.6}_{-2.5}$Gyr, $8.9^{+4.3}_{-3.3}$Gyr and $9.1^{+3.9}_{-5.5}$Gyr, and iron abundances of $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}$ $-1.0^{+0.3}_{-0.4}$, $-1.3^{+0.4}_{-0.4}$ and $-0.8^{+0.5}_{-0.5}$, respectively. Their stellar masses are $3$-$6\times10^8 M_\odot$. The UDGs in our sample are as old or older than galaxies at similar stellar mass or velocity dispersion (only DF44 has an independently measured dispersion). They all follow the well-established stellar mass$-$stellar metallicity relation, while DF44 lies below the velocity dispersion-metallicity relation. These results, combined with the fact that UDGs are unusually large for their stellar mass, suggest that stellar mass plays a more important role in setting stellar population properties for these galaxies than either size or surface brightness., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, published in ApJ

The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. We describe the sample design for the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey and present the final properties of the main samples along with important considerations for using these samples for science. Our target selection criteria were developed while simultaneously optimizing the size distribution of the MaNGA integral field units (IFUs), the IFU allocation strategy, and the target density to produce a survey defined in terms of maximizing S/N, spatial resolution, and sample size. Our selection strategy makes use of redshift limits that only depend on i-band absolute magnitude ($M_i$), or, for a small subset of our sample, $M_i$ and color (NUV-i). Such a strategy ensures that all galaxies span the same range in angular size irrespective of luminosity and are therefore covered evenly by the adopted range of IFU sizes. We define three samples: the Primary and Secondary samples are selected to have a flat number density with respect to $M_i$ and are targeted to have spectroscopic coverage to 1.5 and 2.5 effective radii (Re), respectively. The Color-Enhanced supplement increases the number of galaxies in the low-density regions of color-magnitude space by extending the redshift limits of the Primary sample in the appropriate color bins. The samples cover the stellar mass range $5\times10^8 \leq M_* \leq 3\times10^{11} M_{\odot}$ and are sampled at median physical resolutions of 1.37 kpc and 2.5 kpc for the Primary and Secondary samples respectively. We provide weights that will statistically correct for our luminosity and color-dependent selection function and IFU allocation strategy, thus correcting the observed sample to a volume limited sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially-resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median redshift of z = 0.03). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between redshifts z = 0.6 and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, and the shape of the power spectrum. Within eBOSS, we are conducting two major subprograms: the SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS), investigating X-ray AGN and galaxies in X-ray clusters, and the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS), obtaining spectra of variable sources. All programs use the 2.5-meter Sloan Foundation Telescope at Apache Point Observatory; observations there began in Summer 2014. APOGEE-2 also operates a second near-infrared spectrograph at the 2.5-meter du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, with observations beginning in early 2017. Observations at both facilities are scheduled to continue through 2020. We present the results of a pilot near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic campaign of five very massive galaxies ($\log(\text{M}_\star/\text{M}_\odot)>11.45$) in the range of $1.7

We study the role of environment in the evolution of central and satellite galaxies with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We begin by studying the size-mass relation, replicating previous studies, which showed no difference between the sizes of centrals and satellites at fixed stellar mass, before turning our attention to the size-core velocity dispersion ($\sigma_0$) and mass-$\sigma_0$ relations. By comparing the median size and mass of the galaxies at fixed velocity dispersion we find that the central galaxies are consistently larger and more massive than their satellite counterparts in the quiescent population. In the star forming population we find there is no difference in size and only a small difference in mass. To analyse why these difference may be present we investigate the radial mass profiles and stellar metallicity of the galaxies. We find that in the cores of the galaxies there is no difference in mass surface density between centrals and satellites, but there is a large difference at larger radii. We also find almost no difference between the stellar metallicity of centrals and satellites when they are separated into star forming and quiescent groups. Under the assumption that $\sigma_0$ is invariant to environmental processes, our results imply that central galaxies are likely being increased in mass and size by processes such as minor mergers, particularly at high $\sigma_0$, while satellites are being slightly reduced in mass and size by tidal stripping and harassment, particularly at low $\sigma_0$, all of which predominantly affect the outer regions of the galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We study the internal gradients of stellar population properties within $1.5\;R_{\rm e}$ for a representative sample of 721 galaxies with stellar masses ranging between $10^{9}\;M_{\odot}$ to $10^{11.5}\;M_{\odot}$ from the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. Through the use of our full spectral fitting code FIREFLY, we derive light and mass-weighted stellar population properties and their radial gradients, as well as full star formation and metal enrichment histories. We also quanfify the impact that different stellar population models and full spectral fitting routines have on the derived stellar population properties, and the radial gradient measurements. In our analysis, we find that age gradients tend to be shallow for both early-type and late-type galaxies. {\em Mass-weighted} age gradients of early-types are positive ($\sim 0.09\; {\rm dex}/R_{\rm e}$) pointing to "outside-in" progression of star formation, while late-type galaxies have negative {\em light-weighted} age gradients ($\sim -0.11\; {\rm dex}/R_{\rm e}$), suggesting an "inside-out" formation of discs. We detect negative metallicity gradients in both early and late-type galaxies, but these are significantly steeper in late-types, suggesting that radial dependence of chemical enrichment processes and the effect of gas inflow and metal transport are far more pronounced in discs. Metallicity gradients of both morphological classes correlate with galaxy mass, with negative metallicity gradients becoming steeper with increasing galaxy mass. The correlation with mass is stronger for late-type galaxies, with a slope of $d(\nabla [Z/H])/d(\log M)\sim -0.2\pm 0.05\;$, compared to $d(\nabla [Z/H])/d(\log M)\sim -0.05\pm 0.05\;$ for early-types. We study the internal radial gradients of stellar population properties within $1.5\;R_{\rm e}$ and analyse the impact of galaxy environment. We use a representative sample of 721 galaxies with masses ranging between $10^{9}\;M_{\odot}$ to $10^{11.5}\;M_{\odot}$ from the SDSS-IV survey MaNGA. We split this sample by morphology into early-type and late-type galaxies. Using the full spectral fitting code FIREFLY, we derive the light and mass-weighted stellar population properties age and metallicity, and calculate the gradients of these properties. We use three independent methods to quantify galaxy environment, namely the $N^{th}$ nearest neighbour, the tidal strength parameter $Q$ and distinguish between central and satellite galaxies. In our analysis, we find that early-type galaxies generally exhibit shallow light-weighted age gradients in agreement with the literature and mass-weighted median age gradients tend to be slightly positive. Late-type galaxies, instead, have negative light-weighted age gradients. We detect negative metallicity gradients in both early and late-type galaxies that correlate with galaxy mass, with the gradients being steeper and the correlation with mass being stronger in late-types. We find, however, that stellar population gradients, for both morphological classifications, have no significant correlation with galaxy environment for all three characterisations of environment. Our results suggest that galaxy mass is the main driver of stellar population gradients in both early and late-type galaxies, and any environmental dependence, if present at all, must be very subtle., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. With the availability of large integral-field unit (IFU) spectral surveys of nearby galaxies, there is now the potential to extract spectral information from across the bulges and discs of galaxies in a systematic way. This information can address questions such as how these components built up with time, how galaxies evolve and whether their evolution depends on other properties of the galaxy such as its mass or environment. We present BUDDI, a new approach to fit the two-dimensional light profiles of galaxies as a function of wavelength to extract the spectral properties of these galaxies' discs and bulges. The fitting is carried out using GalfitM, a modified form of Galfit which can fit multi-waveband images simultaneously. The benefit of this technique over traditional multi-waveband fits is that the stellar populations of each component can be constrained using knowledge over the whole image and spectrum available. The decomposition has been developed using commissioning data from the SDSS-IV Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey with redshifts z<0.14 and coverage of at least 1.5 effective radii for a spatial resolution of 2.5 arcsec FWHM and field of view of >22 arcsec, but can be applied to any IFU data of a nearby galaxy with similar or better spatial resolution and coverage. We present an overview of the fitting process, the results from our tests, and we finish with example stellar population analyses of early-type galaxies from the MaNGA survey to give an indication of the scientific potential of applying bulge-disc decomposition to IFU data., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS.
