Neurotoxicity is one of the major effects of tributyltin (TBT). The effects on the next generation of F1 rats exposed to TBT via the placenta and their dams’ milk may be stronger than those on adults. Pregnant Wister rats were exposed to TBT at 0 and 125 ppm in their food. Half of the female F1 rats in both groups were exposed to TBT at 125 ppm in their food from 9 to 15 weeks of age. Female F1 rats were divided into the following groups: the control-control (CC) group, with no exposure; the TBT-control (TC) group, exposed to TBT via the placenta and their dams’ milk; the control-TBT (CT) group, exposed to TBT via their food from 9 to 15 weeks of age; and the TBT-TBT (TT) group, exposed to TBT via the placenta, their dams’ milk, and their food ( n = 10/group). After administration, an open-field test and prepulse inhibition (PPI) test were performed at 15 weeks of age. The mean body weights of the TC and TT groups were significantly lower than that of the CC group from 9 to 15 weeks of age. The mean relative thymus weight of the TC and TT groups was significantly lower than that of the CC group. In the open-field test, a marked decrease in the total locomotion distance was observed in the TT group. The mean values in the TT and TC groups were significantly lower than that in the CC group. For the locomotion distance between 15 and 20 min, the mean values in the CT, TC, and TT groups were significantly lower than that in the CC group. The mean locomotor distance between 25 and 30 min in the TT group was significantly lower than that in the CC and TC groups. The mean values of instances of wall rearing in the TC, CT, and TT groups were significantly lower than that in the CC group. The mean value of face washing or body washing in the TT group was significantly lower than that in the CT group. There were no significant differences in indexes of the PPI test. Exposure to TBT via the placenta and their dams’ milk inhibited the development of F1 rats, which continued after weaning. Inhibition of the rats’ activity induced by exposure to TBT via the placenta and their dams’ milk and/or via their food was suggested. The effects were most evident in the TT group. This study aimed to investigate the echo intensity (EI) of the pretalar fat pad (PFP) in young individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and clarify the relationship between changes in the PFP and the clinical characteristics of CAI. Using the Identification of Functional Ankle Instability (IdFAI) scores, 26 limbs of 15 participants were divided into CAI (IdFAI score ≥11, male: eight limbs, female: six limbs, age: 21±1 years) and normal (IdFAI score <11, male: nine limbs, female: three limbs, age: 20±1 years) groups. The EI of the PFP was measured, and the luminosity ratio (LR) to the EI of the subcutaneous adipose tissue was calculated. To evaluate ankle joint stability and function, the fibulo-talar separation rate and weight-bearing lunge test (WBLT) values were measured. These parameters were compared between the two groups, and their correlations were statistically analyzed. The median IdFAI score in the CAI group was 15.5. The LR of the PFP was significantly higher in the CAI group than in the normal group (P<0.01). The fibulo-talar separation rate values were significantly higher (P=0.006), and the WBLT values were lower (P=0.011) in the CAI group. A moderate negative correlation was observed between the LR and WBLT values ( r =-0.44, P =0.03). The LR of the PFP was high in the CAI group and was related to limited dorsiflexion of the ankle joint in the loaded position. Background: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases; however, its role in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains unclear., Aim: To investigate the hypothesis that the Lp(a) levels are altered by various conditions during the acute phase of ACS, resulting in subsequent cardiovascular events., Methods: From September 2009 to May 2016, 377 patients with ACS who underwent emergent coronary angiography, and 249 who completed ≥ 1000 d of follow-up were enrolled. Lp(a) levels were measured using an isoform-independent assay at each time point from before percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to 48 h after PCI. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE; cardiac death, other vascular death, ACS, and non-cardiac vascular events)., Results: The mean circulating Lp(a) level decreased significantly from pre-PCI (0 h) to 12 h after (19.0 mg/dL to 17.8 mg/dL, P < 0.001), and then increased significantly up to 48 h after (19.3 mg/dL, P < 0.001). The changes from 0 to 12 h [Lp(a)Δ0-12] significantly correlated with the basal levels of creatinine [Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (SRCC): -0.181, P < 0.01] and Lp(a) (SRCC: -0.306, P < 0.05). Among the tertiles classified according to Lp(a)Δ0-12, MACE was significantly more frequent in the lowest Lp(a)Δ0-12 group than in the remaining two tertile groups (66.2% vs 53.6%, P = 0.034). A multivariate analysis revealed that Lp(a)Δ0-12 [hazard ratio (HR): 0.96, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 0.92-0.99] and basal creatinine (HR: 1.13, 95%CI: 1.05-1.22) were independent determinants of subsequent MACE., Conclusion: Circulating Lp(a) levels in patients with ACS decreased significantly after emergent PCI, and a greater decrease was independently associated with a worse prognosis., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: There are no conflicts of interest to disclose., (©The Author(s) 2024. A 54-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis treated with interferon-β (IFN-β)-1b for 15 years presented with sustained hypertension (240/124 mmHg) and retinal bleeding. She had proteinuria, anemia, thrombocytopenia, elevated serum creatinine levels, and haptoglobin depletion. Intravenous nicardipine stabilized her blood pressure, but her renal function and platelet count deteriorated. The initial disintegrin-like metalloprotease with thrombospondin type 1 motifs 13 (ADAMTS13) activity was 28% of normal without its inhibitor. The subsequent peripheral appearance of schistocytes suggested thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). After IFN-β-1b cessation, the platelet count increased, and the blood pressure stabilized. The ADAMTS13 activity normalized, although the creatinine level did not. TMA may develop after the long-term use of IFN-β without adverse events.

Purpose: Health literacy (HL) is pivotal in managing patients with abdominal cancer and is associated with treatment outcomes and care experience. However, detailed characteristics of HL and their associations with clinical features remain uncertain in the population. Therefore, we aimed to comprehensively investigate HL and its associations with clinical characteristics in older patients with abdominal tumours., Methods: We analysed 103 older patients with abdominal tumours prescribed perioperative rehabilitation programs in an acute care hospital. The Japanese version of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire was used to measure comprehensive HL. Multivariate ordinal or linear regression analyses were used to explore the associations between HL and the following clinical characteristics: physical status, physical function, cardiopulmonary function, levels of activities of daily living (ADL), physical activity level, and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). All regression analyses included patient demographics as covariates., Results: Approximately 50%-70% of the participants had difficulty accessing and appraising health-related information, and 20%-45% thought it was difficult to understand and apply the information. The percentage of limited HL levels in general HL, three health-relevant domains, and four competencies ranged from 62% to 83%. Moreover, regression analyses revealed that lower HL was associated with worse physical status/function, lower ADL, and poorer HR-QoL., Conclusion: Most older patients with abdominal tumours have limited HL, which may lead them to make treatment decisions without fully understanding what healthcare providers advise.
