25.08.2022 відбулася робота Біологічної секції щорічної Міжнародної Гамовської конференції у режимі он-лайн на платформі Zoom. Традиційно Біологічна секція проходить під назвою “The Importance of G. Gamow's Ideas for Biology of the 21st Century”. У роботі секції брали участь відомі науковці, що ведуть дослідження в області молекулярної біології та генетики з провідних наукових установ України, Канади, США, Великої Британії і Німеччини, також брали участь аспіранти та студенти (загалом 52 учасника). Було представлено 13 усних доповідей, серед них доповіді – «Генетичні ресурси рослин для підвищення стресостійкості – на прикладі зернових культур» - проф., д.б.н. Бьорнер А. Серед підготовлених доповідей вважаємо необхідним відмітити високу якість та актуальність виконаних на сучасному рівні досліджень молодих та починаючих науковців: «Біоінформаційний аналіз нуклеотидних послідовностей локусів Gli-1 Triticum aestivum L.» – аспірант Попович Ю.А., проф., д.б.н. Чеботар С.В. (ОНУ імені І.І. Мечникова, Одеса, Україна); «Скринінг продуцентів тіопептидних антибіотиків за допомогою репортерної системи на основі промотору гена tipA» – аспірант Тістечок С.І. (Львівський національний університет імені Івана Франка, Україна); «Довгі та короткі варіанти 5S рДНК у геномах видів Apis» – аспірант Рошка Н.М. (Чернівецький національний університет імені Юрія Федьковича, Чернівці, Україна). Як позитивну рису роботи біологічної секції було відмічено багатоплановість охопленої тематики, що має генетичне підґрунтя, та перспективність досліджень, що виконуються на стику наук. Учасники Біологічної секції звернули увагу, що Г.А. Гамов зробив внесок у розвиток саме молекулярної біології, поставивши питання про розшифрування генетичного коду, тому необхідно у назву конференції додати – «molecular biology», щоб назва конференції виглядала наступним чином: «Аstronomy and Beyond: Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravitation, Astroparticle physics, Rradioastronomy, Astrobiology and Molecular biology».

Nurses in academia face challenges in their writing development. The transition from a clinical setting presents difficulties in positioning oneself as a research writer leading to missed opportunities to disseminate outputs that potentially improve health care outcomes. This study explores the transitions of individual nurse clinicians and teachers as they engage with a writing group intervention to write a Master's dissertation or a research article. Previous writing group studies have focused on participant outcomes such as productivity and not the developmental processes of becoming a writer. To offer an in-depth analysis of transitions and human development, I took a sociocultural and cultural-historical approach. Theories were drawn upon that emphasise how individuals experience uncertainty and use resources to make sense, and make meaning to reposition themselves and become active agents. 18 participants at a university in the Southeast of England joined one of two writing group interventions to work on academic research writing concepts in a cultural and social learning environment. I posed the following research questions: • How and why do the participants appropriate the mediational tools from the writing interventions during the work of transition? • How do the participants experience relational work and deal with contradictions to shape their academic research writing development? I collected data through participant observation, samples of writing-in-development, and individual narratives spanning up to three years. I analysed the data through a conceptual framework that draws theoretically from a sociocultural understanding of developmental transitions and a cultural-historical perspective on relational agency. What mattered about becoming a writer in a clinical or teaching role created demands, and the writing tasks caused uncertainties. The research revealed the psychological work of transition through the appropriation of psychological tools. When the hidden aspects of writing were exposed, it led to self-conception and writers’ identity work. Novice writers needed to relinquish prior conceptions about writing. However, the transition became developmental when the participants engaged with where-to activities bringing them to the genre of the discipline and enabling concept development through a realisation of their contribution through writing. Becoming an active agent was contingent on supervisory support and cultivating and enacting know-who to align what mattered with others to develop common knowledge about disciplinary writing concepts. The findings revealed the potential to develop writers’ identities to help them change the status quo towards an imagined future. However, the contingent issues point to critical areas of practice for writing development that requires nurturing. The study contributes to the literature on writing group interventions through its original theoretical approach in bringing sociocultural and cultural-historical work together to investigate formative transitions.

The United Kingdom has an ageing population whose members experience significant life transitions as they grow older, for example, losing mobility due to deteriorating health. For these adults, digital technology has the potential to sustain their independence and improve their quality of life. However older adults can be reluctant to use digital solutions. In this paper, we review a local charity providing a grocery shopping service for older adults who are unable to go themselves. We explore how older adults perceive the benefits and drawbacks of both physical and digital shopping. Using these insights, we designed ShopComm to enable and support older adults with mobility impairments to shop online.

Aliskiren is the first of a new class of orally active, non-peptide, renin inhibitors. The enzyme renin is involved in the first step of the renin - angiotensin - aldosterone system (RAAS), which helps regulate blood pressure. Inhibition of renin activity suppresses the RAAS at an earlier point than that targeted by the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Short-term, placebo-controlled studies in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension show aliskiren monotherapy to be well tolerated and effective; it lowers blood pressure at least as effectively as the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide and the angiotensin II receptor antagonists (blockers: ARBs) irbesartan and losartan. In a 26-week study, aliskiren-based treatment had a greater antihypertensive effect than treatment based on the ACE inhibitor ramipril. Aliskiren in combination with an ACE inhibitor, an ARB, a calcium-channel blocker or with hydrochlorothiazide reduced blood pressure more effectively than the respective monotherapies in most instances. Whereas ACE inhibitors and ARBs increase plasma renin concentration and activity as a consequence of interrupting angiotensin II-mediated negative feedback on renin release, renin inhibitors decrease plasma renin activity. This is illustrated best in studies in which aliskiren neutralises the increase in plasma renin activity caused by an ACE inhibitor and an ARB. The net reduction in renin activity occurs despite the increase in plasma renin concentration that aliskiren causes. These increases are slightly larger with aliskiren than those occurring with other blockers of the renin pathway, consistent with inhibition at the rate-limiting step causing the greatest inhibition of the angiotensin II-mediated negative feedback. © 2008 CSF Medical Communications Ltd.

The first KErguelen Ocean and Plateau compared Study (KEOPS1), conducted in the naturally iron-fertilised Kerguelen bloom, demonstrated that fecal material was the main pathway for exporting carbon to the deep ocean during summer (January–February 2005), suggesting a limited role of direct export via phytodetrital aggregates. The KEOPS2 project reinvestigated this issue during the spring bloom initiation (October–November 2011), when zooplankton communities may exert limited grazing pressure, and further explored the link between carbon flux, export efficiency and dominant sinking particles depending upon surface plankton community structure. Sinking particles were collected in polyacrylamide gel-filled and standard free-drifting sediment traps (PPS3/3), deployed at six stations between 100 and 400 m, to examine flux composition, particle origin and their size distributions. Results revealed an important contribution of phytodetrital aggregates (49 ± 10 and 45 ± 22% of the total number and volume of particles respectively, all stations and depths averaged). This high contribution dropped when converted to carbon content (30 ± 16% of total carbon, all stations and depths averaged), with cylindrical fecal pellets then representing the dominant fraction (56 ± 19%).At 100 and 200 m depth, iron- and biomass-enriched sites exhibited the highest carbon fluxes (maxima of 180 and 84 ± 27 mg C m-2 d-1, based on gel and PPS3/3 trap collection respectively), especially where large fecal pellets dominated over phytodetrital aggregates. Below these depths, carbon fluxes decreased (48 ± 21% decrease on average between 200 and 400 m), and mixed aggregates composed of phytodetritus and fecal matter dominated, suggesting an important role played by physical aggregation in deep carbon export.Export efficiencies determined from gels, PPS3/3 traps and 234Th disequilibria (200 m carbon flux/net primary productivity) were negatively correlated to net primary productivity with observed decreases from ~ 0.2 at low-iron sites to ~ 0.02 at high-iron sites. Varying phytoplankton communities and grazing pressure appear to explain this negative relationship. Our work emphasises the need to consider detailed plankton communities to accurately identify the controls on carbon export efficiency, which appear to include small spatio-temporal variations in ecosystem structure.
