This article delves into the complex relationship between climate change, migration patterns, and health outcomes in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). While the severe impact of climate change on health in LAC is widely acknowledged, the article sheds light on the often-overlooked multiple effects on migration and the well-being of migrants. These impacts encompass poverty, food and water insecurity, and adverse physical and mental health outcomes. Our paper, guided by a rights-based framework, aims to identify key trends, challenges, and opportunities that can contribute to enhanced knowledge and generate questions to support future research. By emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts across sectors, including public and private entities, civil society, and academic institutions, we aim to address the nuanced intersections of climate change, migration, and health impacts in the region. This approach prioritises the needs of the most vulnerable, including migrants, establishing a framework for mitigation and adaptation that ensures equitable outcomes.

The cement gland marks the extreme anterior ectoderm of the Xenopus embryo, and is determined through the overlap of several positional domains. In order to understand how these positional cues activate cement gland differentiation, the promoter of Xag1, a marker of cement gland differentiation, was analyzed. Previous studies have shown that Xag1 expression can be activated by the anterior-specific transcription factor Otx2, but that this activation is indirect. 102 bp of upstream genomic Xag1 sequence restricts reporter gene expression specifically to the cement gland. Within this region, putative binding sites for Ets and ATF/CREB transcription factors are both necessary and sufficient to drive cement gland-specific expression, and cooperate to do so. Furthermore, while the putative ATF/CREB factor is activated by Otx2, a factor acting through the putative Ets-binding site is not. These results suggest that Ets-like and ATF/CREB-like family members play a role in regulating Xag1 expression in the cement gland, through integration of Otx2 dependent and independent pathways.

The cement gland is a simple secretory organ that marks the anterior-most dorsal ectoderm in Xenopus embryos. In this study, we examine the timing of cement gland induction and the cell interactions that contribute to cement gland formation. Firstly, we show that the outer ectodermal layer, from which the cement gland arises, becomes specified as cement gland by mid-gastrula. Curiously, at early gastrula, the inner layer of the dorsal ectoderm, which does not contribute to the mature cement gland, is strongly and transiently specified as cement gland. Secondly, we show that the mid-gastrula dorsoanterior yolky endoderm, which comes to underlie the cement gland primordium, is a potent inducer of cement gland formation and patterning. The cement gland itself has an anteroposterior pattern, with the gene XA expressed only posteriorly. Dorsoanterior yolky endoderm greatly enhances formation of large, patterned cement glands in partially induced anterodorsal ectoderm, but is unable to induce cement gland in naive animal caps. Neural tissue is induced less frequently than cement gland by the dorsoanterior yolky endoderm, suggesting that the endoderm induces cement gland directly. Thirdly, we demonstrate that the ventral ectoderm adjacent to the cement gland attenuates cement gland differentiation late during gastrulation. The more distant ventral mesendoderm is also a potent inhibitor of cement gland formation. These are the first data showing that normal ventral tissues can inhibit cement gland differentiation and suggest that cement gland size and position may be partly regulated by negative signals. Previous work has shown that cement gland can be induced by neural plate and by dorsal mesoderm. Together, these data suggest that cement gland induction is a complex process regulated by multiple positive and negative cell interactions.
