Continental arcs are associated with volcanism concentrated into two main belts—the main arc and back arc, often separated by fold and thrust belts. The Loicas Trough, Argentina, is a post-orogenic extensional feature that obliquely cuts the fold and thrust belts. The trough hosts large Pliocene–Holocene volcanic centres, including Domuyo and Tromen, that lie between the main arc and back arc and thus provide a rare window into this setting. We present major and trace element data for the Loicas Trough, which we combine with geochemical modelling using the Magma Chamber Simulator (MCS) to explore the origin and evolution of the volcanism. The lavas display a wide continuous range from alkaline basalts to subalkaline rhyolites. Trace elements reveal variable extents of arc enrichment (2 < Nb/U < 28), which correlate with proximity to the trench and differentiation indices. Our results and MCS models indicate that the Loicas Trough parental magmas formed from compositionally zoned mantle. Best-fit models indicate that the differentiation occurs at middle and upper crustal levels, in sharp contrast to lower crustal hot zones beneath main arcs. Assimilation of partial crustal melts drives compositional evolution and obscures source signatures. Pure or high fraction end-member partial crustal melts are also identified at Domuyo based on their low Ba (~ 250 ppm) and moderate Sc contents (~ 8 ppm). We find evidence of similar lavas in transtensional settings adjacent to continental arcs worldwide, which do not adhere to the main versus back arc volcanism binary. We suggest the term arc-adjacent magmatism, where compositions are mainly controlled by extensive assimilation and reworking in the middle to upper crust.

A model is developed to test the hypothesis that kimberlites can form by low-degree melting of asthenospheric mantle followed by entrainment and assimilation of lithospheric mantle. The developed model uses inversion calculations based upon rare earth and compatible trace elements. For kimberlites (s.s.), an equation describing mass balance between a melt of unknown composition and a contaminant end-member of xenocrystic/assimilated material from the lithospheric mantle is inverted. This allows calculation of the mass fraction of xenocrystic minerals from the lithospheric mantle (olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, garnet, ilmenite) entrained in the kimberlitic magma, as well as the source mineralogy and melt degree in the source region. The composition of the parental melt prior to interaction with the lithosphere is not assumed a priori but is calculated by the model. The CO2, H2O, K2O and P2O5 contents of the source are estimated assuming batch melting and the inversion models. The range and coupling of the model parameters are found using a non-linear most-squares inversion procedure, and the model space is visualised using a Self-Organising Map approach. Our earlier work supporting assimilation of xenocrystic opx is, however, not a precondition but provides a post-processing constraint, as well as the selection of a more likely set of solutions from the Self-Organising Map. The calculation is applied to a data set from the Majuagaa kimberlite dyke (southern West Greenland) including added whole rock analyses for CO2 and H2O. Major variations in whole rock compositions are related to flow differentiation of olivine macrocrysts. The textures of opx, cpx, gt and ilm megacrysts show evidence for reaction with the transporting melt and physical erosion in the kimberlitic mush. Sr isotopes represent a potential means to trace the provenance of archaeological timber. Such tracing allows us to examine the transport, by past people, of wooden objects and of wood and timber as a raw material. However, issues exist with the mobility of Sr and addition of exogenous Sr during waterlogging. This paper presents a systematic assessment of cleaning methods to remove exogeneous Sr from waterlogged wood. Neither a large number of Milli-Q washes, a combination of MQ and Hydrofluoric acid (HF) or alpha-cellulose extraction were able to retrieve the original signature. It was also shown that ashing leads to higher uncertainties due to the smaller amount of Sr available for analysis, this method will only be really useful when large samples are available, is not recommended for small archaeological samples. Our studies also highlight that the distribution of Sr in waterlogged wood is highly heterogeneous.

Major changes in tectonic style can lead to tapping of highly variable magma sources and potentially result in significant episodes of crustal growth. Here we focus on magmatism associated with a transition from arc magmatism to subsequent over-thickening and eventual orogenic collapse. This transition is associated with cessation of subduction and was followed by continental extension and finally continental break-up as recorded in the Cretaceous magmatic record of Zealandia. Orogenic collapse peaked at 110 Ma and is expressed through core complex formation and the intrusion of I- to evolved I/S-type Rahu Suite plutons that have widely varying chemical compositions but homogeneous whole-rock and zircon isotopic signatures that are intermediate between mantle and local upper crust values. The Rahu Suite is interpreted to be derived from differing degrees of melt extraction from a pre-existing lower crustal source and lacks a demonstrable juvenile component. This lower crustal source was likely formed by magmatic underplating and melt–crust hybridization during preceding arc volcanism (Separation Point and Darran suites), effectively smearing out a pulsed event of crust formation in the zircon record. Therefore, late orogenic I- and I/S-type suites do not have to equate to crustal growth and can be an expression of crustal re-melting. An abrupt change in magma sources in Zealandia occurred after 100 Ma during the onset of progressive crustal extension. A juvenile alkaline component (presumably derived from the lithospheric mantle) is suggested to have been present from >97 Ma. This component became more pronounced with time until the emplacement of granites and trachytes with isotopic signatures overlapping with coeval mafic mantle-derived dikes during bimodal rift-related magmatism. The juvenile alkaline component dictated the composition of the felsic magmas but did not represent a significant crustal growth event due to small total volumes.

A rarely considered element of Arctic system change in the Pleistocene is the possibility and consequences of any large high-latitude impact. We report the discovery of a large impact crater hidden beneath Hiawatha Glacier in northwest Greenland. From airborne radar surveys, we identify a 31-kilometer-wide, circular bedrock depression beneath up to a kilometer of ice. This depression has an elevated rim that cross-cuts tributary subglacial channels and a subdued central uplift that appears to be actively eroding. From ground investigations of the deglaciated foreland, we identify overprinted structures within Precambrian bedrock along the ice margin that strike tangent to the subglacial rim. Glaciofluvial sediment from the largest river draining the crater contains shocked quartz and other impact-related grains. Geochemical analysis of this sediment indicates that the impactor was a fractionated iron asteroid, which must have been more than a kilometer wide to produce the identified crater. Radiostratigraphy of the ice in the crater shows that the Holocene ice is continuous and conformable, but all deeper and older ice appears to be debris-rich or heavily disturbed. The age of this impact crater is presently unknown, but from our geological and geophysical evidence, we conclude that it is unlikely to predate the Pleistocene inception of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Continental intraplate magmas with isotopic affinities similar to HIMU are identified worldwide. Involvement of an asthenospheric HIMU or HIMU-like source is contested because the characteristic radiogenic Pb compositions coupled with unradiogenic Sr and intermediate Nd and Hf compositions can also result from in-situ ingrowth in metasomatised lithospheric mantle. Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic compositions of late Cretaceous lamprophyre dikes from Westland, New Zealand, provide new insights into the formation of a HIMU-like alkaline intraplate magmatic province under the Zealandia continent. The oldest (102-100 Ma) calc-alkaline lamprophyres are compositionally similar to the preceding arc-magmatism ((206)pb/(204)pb((i)) = 18.6, (207)pb/(204)pb)((i)) = 15.62, (208)pb/(204)pb((i)) = 38.6, Sr-87/Sr-86((i)) = 0.7063-0.7074, epsilon Nd-(i) = -2.1 - +0.1 and epsilon Hf-(i) = -0.2 - +2.3) and are interpreted as melts originating from subduction-modified lithosphere. Alkaline dikes erupted on the inboard Gondwana margin shortly after cessation of subduction (92-84 Ma) have heterogeneous isotopic properties: (206)pb/Pb-204((i)) = 18.7 to 19.4, Pb-207/Pb-204((i)) = 15.60 to 15.65, Pb-208/Pb-204((i)) = 38.6 to 39.4, Sr-87/(86)((i)) = 0.7031 to 0.7068, epsilon Nd-(i) = +4.5 to +8.0 and epsilon Hf-(i) = +5.1 to +8.0. Melt compositions point to an amphibole-bearing spinel facies lithospheric mantle source enriched by metasomatism that introduced, amongst many elements, U + Th which lead to rapid ingrowth to HIMU-like compositions. Importantly, this HIMU-like source enrichment appears to have completely originated from the complex local subduction history. A coeval episode of alkaline magmatism (mainly 98-82 Ma) occurred outboard of Gondwana's former active margin and on the Hikurangi oceanic plateau (accreted to Zealandia in the Early Cretaceous) with compositions closer to true HIMU (Pb-206/Pb-204((i)) approximate to 20.5, Pb-207/Pb-204((i)) 15.7, Pb-208/(204) Pb-(i) approximate to 40.0

The orogenic Anita Peridotite in Fiordland, SW New Zealand, provides an opportunity to examine the composition of a large block of upper mantle exhumed from beneath a Cretaceous arc. This little-studied 1 km x 20 km massif is dominated by spinel-facies harzburgite and dunite. Olivine Mg# of 92-93, spinel Cr# of 70, orthopyroxene with low Al2O3, and extremely depleted whole-rock geochemical characteristics indicate that the peridotite body experienced > 30% melt extraction, probably within the spinel facies. Mineral compositions show some similarity to those of cratonic peridotitic mantle. Rare Cr-rich amphibole suggests that the peridotite has been subsequently re-enriched. Distinctive, coupled Eu and Sr anomalies in the amphiboles, which can be subdivided into three groups, are interpreted to show that they formed by hydration of metasomatic clinopyroxene-plagioclase aggregates. Measured amphibole Sr-87/Sr-86 (0 center dot 705-0 center dot 706), I mu Nd ( +6 center dot 3 to + 11 center dot 1), Pb-208/Pb-204 (37 center dot 8-38 center dot 9) and I mu Hf ( +5 center dot 6 to 36 center dot 9) indicate that the metasomatic agent, which caused crystallization of clinopyroxene and plagioclase, had an isotopic composition similar to ocean island basalt. On the basis of isotopic data and mineral chemistry, the enriched nature of the peridotite is interpreted to have been caused by percolation of small volumes of a mafic silicate melt. Additional evidence for the passage of such melts is the rare occurrence of hornblendite veins and orthopyroxene hornblendite dykes. This peridotite body therefore preserves evidence of extreme melt depletion and the passage of silicate melts and hydrous fluids within the sub-arc mantle.

There has been long debate on the asthenospheric versus lithospheric source for numerous intraplate basalts with ocean island basalt (OIB) and high time-integrated U/Pb (HIMU)-like source signatures that have erupted through the Zealandia continental crust. Analysis of 157 spinel facies peridotitic mantle xenoliths from 25 localities across Zealandia permits the first comprehensive regional description of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) and insights into whether it could be a source to the intraplate basalts. Contrary to previous assumptions, the Oligocene-Miocene Zealandia SCLM is highly heterogeneous. It is composed of a refractory craton-like domain (West Otago) adjacent to several moderately fertile domains (East Otago, North Otago, Auckland Islands). Each domain has an early history decoupled from the overlying Carboniferous and younger continental crust, and each domain has undergone varying degrees of depletion followed by enrichment. Clinopyroxene grains reveal trace element characteristics (low Ti/Eu, high Th/U) consistent with enrichment through reaction with carbonatite. This metasomatic overprint has a composition that closely matches HIMU in Sr, PbNd isotopes. However, clinopyroxene Hf isotopes are in part highly radiogenic and decoupled from the other isotope systems, and also mostly more radiogenic than the intraplate basalts. If the studied spinel facies xenoliths are representative of the thin Zealandia SCLM, the melting of garnet facies lithosphere could only be the intraplate basalt source if it had a less radiogenic Hf-Nd isotope composition than the investigated spinel facies, or was mixed with asthenosphere-derived melts containing less radiogenic Hf.

New Sr and Na isotopic cata are presented for several large feldspar crystals occurring in microgranular enclaves in the Swifts Creek and Bricle Track biutons, along with analyses of their host enclave grounamass and adjacent granitoid. In the Swifts Creek Pluton several previous studies have concluded that the microgranular enclaves represent admixed, more mafic and more primitive magmas, and new data presented here confirm that. Felaspar megacrysts in the microgranular enclaves have Sr and Nd isotopic signatures that are distinct from the surrounding enclave ground-mass and from other enclaves in the pluton and therefore cannot have crystallised in situ. Isotopic compositions of these feldspars are more consistent with their having crystallised in a reservoir similar in composition to the most primitive granitoid analyses. The crystals were then physically transferred from the granitoid magma into the enclave while the latter was still partially liquid, thus invalidating arguments for a porphyroblastic origin. Field, petrographic and geochemical data are consistent with microgranular enclaves in the Bridle Track pluton also originating as admixed, more mafic magmas. However, Sr isotopic compositions of the enclaves are identical, within error, to the host granite and indicate that significant Sr isotopic equillibration has occurred. Nd isotopic compositions of the enclaves extend to slightly higher 143Nd/122Na9) and are consistent with a mingled magma origin followed by major isotopic equilibration. Feldspar phenocrysts in the studied enclave have isotopic compositions indistinguishable from both the enclave groundmass and host granite, preventing an interpretation of their origin using isotopic evidence alone.

Detailed mapping and sampling on Turoa ski-field and surrounding areas on Mt Ruapehu has enabled identification of individual flow packets that represent small scale eruptive events during the major cone-building episodes previously identified on Ruapehu by Graham & Hackett. The area is dominated by plagioclase-pyroxene-phyric andesitic lavas of Mangawhero Formation, which are petrographically and geochemically typical of post-120 ka Ruapehu lavas. Although the lavas are from a relatively small area of the volcano, geochemical and isotopic compositions show a range in variation similar to that observed for the entire volcano. Examination of geochemical variations between individual flow packets and also between sequential lava flows indicates complex processes of assimilation and influx of “new”, variably evolved and fractionated magmas into high level magma chambers. These chambers are most likely heterogeneous, and individual eruptions may also sample compositionally distinct regions of the same chamber. It is probable that a complex plumbing system exists beneath Ruapehu with at least two levels of magma storage, evolution, and crustal interaction. Consequently, attempts to numerically quantify such a complex system using models such as assimilation-fractional crystallisation processes are inherently oversimplifications.

Glass-bearing plutonic fragments occur as rare accessory lithics within the ca. 64 ka Rotoiti and Earthquake Flat ignimbrites that were erupted from Okataina caldera complex, Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand. Granitoid lithic fragments are only found in the Rotoiti ignimbrite and fall into two groups. Group 1 granitoids have textures consistent with a period of slow cooling followed by rapid quenching, and were excavated by the Rotoiti eruption from a single incompletely solidified magma body. Although isotopic ratios for the Group 1 granitoids are similar to the host ignimbrite, they are not cognate, having different chemistry, mineralogy, mineral chemistry and crystallisation history. It is more likely that they represent fragments of a separate incompletely solidified magma chamber that was intercepted by the erupting Rotoiti ignimbrite magma. Low LILE and high HFSE abundances favour a comagmatic link with the ca. 0.28 Ma Matahina ignimbrite and it is suggested they are derived from an isolated cupola of the Matahina magma chamber that remained at depth (between 3.5 and 5 kbar pressure) after eruption of the Matahina ignimbrite. Migration toward the surface probably accompanied development of the Rotoiti magma system in the upper crust. Most geochemical variation in Group 1 granitoids is related to the abundance of biotite, the concentration of which is controlled by differential shear. REE abundance is controlled by light REE-enriched accessory minerals preferentially included within biotite. Although Eu(n) remains constant in the Group 1 granitoids, Eu/Eu(*) varies systematically with (La/Yb)(n) and is controlled by variations in Sm and Gd rather than in Eu. Group 2 granitoid fragments have a wide range of composition, comparable to many Okataina rhyolites, including those found as lithic fragments in the Rotoiti ignimbrite. The Hohonu Dyke Swarm and French Creek Granite represent contemporaneous and cogenetic alkaline magmatism generated during crustal extension in the Western Province of New Zealand. The age of 82 Ma for French Creek Granite coincides with the oldest oceanic crust in the Tasman Sea and suggests emplacement during the separation of New Zealand and Australia. The French Creek Granite is a composite A-type granitoid, dominated by a subsolvus biotite syenogranite with high silica, low CaO, MgO, Cr, Ni, V and Sr and elevated high-field-strength elements (Zr, Nb, Ga, Y). Subordinate varieties of French Creek Granite include a hypersolvus alkali amphibole monzogranite and a quartz-alkali feldspar syenite. Spatially associated rhyolitic dykes are considered to represent hypabyssal equivalents of French Creek Granite. The Hohonu Dyke Swarm represents mafic magmatism which preceded, overlapped with, and followed emplacement of French Creek Granite. Lamprophyric and doleritic varieties dominate the swarm, with rare phonolite dykes also present. Geochemical compositions of French Creek Granite indicate it is an A1-subtype granitoid and suggest derivation by fractionation of a mantle-derived melt with oceanic island basalt - like characteristics. The hypothesis that the French Creek Granite represents fractionation of a Hohonu Dyke Swarm composition, or a mantle melt derived from the same source, is tested. Major- and trace-element data are compatible with derivation of the French Creek Granite by fractionation of amphibole, clinopyroxene and plagioclase from mafic magmas, followed by fractionation of alkali and plagioclase feldspar at more felsic compositions. Although some variants of the French Creek Granite have Sr and Nd isotopic compositions overlapping those of the Hohonu Dyke Swarm, most of the French Creek Granite is more radiogenic than the Hohonu Dyke Swarm, indicating the involvement of a radiogenic crustal component. Ion microprobe U-Pb zircon ages have been obtained from four samples of Cretaceous granitoid and two samples of volcanogenic sediment from the northwest Nelson-Westland region of the South Island of New Zealand. Crow Granite, which intrudes lower Paleozoic metasedi-mentary rocks in the Buller Terrane on the eastern side of the Karamea Batholith, has given a crystallisation age of 137 ± 3 Ma (2a). This age is typical of the Jurassic-Early Cretaceous plutonic rocks that dominate the Median Tectonic Zone, and raises the possibility that the Western Province and the Median Tectonic Zone were linked some 20 m.y. earlier than previously proposed. The “Gouland granod-iorite”, which forms a large pluton at the northeastern margin of the Karamea Batholith, has a crystallisation age of 119 ± 2 Ma (2a). This age is similar to the Separation Point Batholith (118 Ma), and the distinctive chemistry of the batholith (high Na, Al, Sr, and low Y) is also displayed by the Gouland granodiorite. The “Big Deep granite”, which intrudes Devonian granites of the Karamea Batholith in the Upper Buller Gorge, has a crystallisation age of 110 ± 3 Ma (2a), similar to the age of Buckland Granite (Rahu Suite) in the Paparoa Batholith. Berlins Porphyry in the Lower Buller Gorge also has a mid-Cretaceous age of 111 ± 2 Ma (2a). Two samples of Stitts Tuff from the Lower Buller Gorge have given crystallisation ages of 101 ± 2 Ma (2a) and 102 ± 3 Ma (2a). These ages constrain the timing of initiation of fault-bounded sedimentary basins on the West Coast, related to a major period of crustal extension before the opening of the Tasman Sea Basin.
