Building upon our ongoing studies on the highyield synthetic route to 2,3,4,5-tetracarba-1,6-nido hexaborane derivative 5, we continue to explore the chemistry of this system to isolate a range of perphenylated C4B2-type carborane isomers. As a result, the photolysis of 5 for an elongated period yielded 6, which exhibits an intense luminescence upon excitation with a UV lamp (λex=366 nm). In contrast, the conversion of 5 under thermal conditions (microwave heating) generated the isomer 7, which does not show any luminescence. The structural disparity among the three isomers 5-7 is the position of the butadiene moiety with respect to the C4B2-carborane cage as deduced from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. In an attempt to generate the classical structural motif of 5, an equimolar amount of KOtBu was added to a THF solution of 5, which immediately provided the boratacyclopentadiene derivative 8 in good yield. The observed rearrangement reactions were further investigated by quantum chemical calculations to suggest a plausible reaction pathway. According to the DFT calculations, the energetically favored reaction mechanism most likely involves tricyclic transition states and classical intermediate structures. A new isomer of borepin, identified as 2-borabicyclo[3.2.0]hepta-3,6-diene by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy, was obtained by reaction of 1-mesityl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylborole with the diaminoalkyne bis(piperidyl)acetylene. Analogous reactions of the alkyne with other borole derivatives generated seven-membered borepins, in which a second equivalent of the alkyne was found to insert into the exocyclic B-C bond. We have exploited the reactivity of antiaromatic boroles, gaining access to aryl-substituted monocyclic 1,2-azaborinines. The observed ring-expansion reaction of inherently electron-deficient boroles with organometallic and organic azides is demonstrated for representative examples. This substance class is expected to provide a new avenue into 1,2-azaborinine chemistry, especially in the area of functional organoboron materials. Chemical single-electron reduction of 1-mesityl-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylborole (3) gave a stable radical anion [CoCp*2 ][3] as shown in earlier investigations. Herein, we present the reaction of [CoCp*2 ][3] with the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl radical (TEMPO), a common radical trap. Instead of radical recombination, the reaction proceeds through a redox pathway involving oxidation of the borole radical anion combined with reduction of TEMPO. This electron-transfer process is accompanied by a deprotonation reaction of the cobaltocenium counterion by the base TEMPO(-) to give TEMPO-H and a neutral cobalt(I) fulvene complex (7). The latter was not observed directly during the reaction, because it instantaneously reacts as a nucleophile attacking at the boron center of the in situ generated borole 3 to give the borate 6. However, 7 was synthesized independently by deprotonation of [CoCp*2 ][PF6 ]. In addition, the obtained zwitterionic cobaltocenium borate 6 undergoes a photolytic rearrangement to form the borata-alkene derivative 9 that thermally transforms to the chiral cobaltocenium borate 12. As neutral isoelectronic analogues of the elusive cyclopentadienyl cation, boroles have been of interest for their prospective applications as strong Lewis acids, chromophores, and electron acceptors. Recently our group discovered a π-nucleophilic boryl anion based on the borole system. In an effort to extend borole chemistry, we now report the molecular structure of 1-chloro-2,3,4,5-tetraphenylborole (1) and its corresponding borole dianion resulting from the two-electron reduction of 1 with KC(8). The thermally induced dimerization of 1 yields an unprecedented boracyclohexadiene/borolene spiro-bicyclic compound and the resulting dimer was fully characterized including a single-crystal X-ray analysis.
