Abstract

We generated genome-wide data from 69 Europeans who lived between 8,000-3,000 years ago by enriching ancient DNA libraries for a target set of almost four hundred thousand polymorphisms. Enrichment of these positions decreases the sequencing required for genome-wide ancient DNA analysis by a median of around 250-fold, allowing us to study an order of magnitude more individuals than previous studies and to obtain new insights about the past. We show that the populations of western and far eastern Europe followed opposite trajectories between 8,000-5,000 years ago. At the beginning of the Neolithic period in Europe, ~8,000-7,000 years ago, closely related groups of early farmers appeared in Germany, Hungary, and Spain, different from indigenous hunter-gatherers, whereas Russia was inhabited by a distinctive population of hunter-gatherers with high affinity to a ~24,000 year old Siberian6 . By ~6,000-5,000 years ago, a resurgence of hunter-gatherer ancestry had occurred throughout much of Europe, but in Russia, the Yamnaya steppe herders of this time were descended not only from the preceding eastern European hunter-gatherers, but from a population of Near Eastern ancestry. Western and Eastern Europe came into contact ~4,500 years ago, as the Late Neolithic Corded Ware people from Germany traced ~3/4 of their ancestry to the Yamnaya, documenting a massive migration into the heartland of Europe from its eastern periphery. This steppe ancestry persisted in all sampled central Europeans until at least ~3,000 years ago, and is ubiquitous in present-day Europeans. These results provide support for the theory of a steppe origin of at least some of the Indo-European languages of Europe.

Abstract

We sequenced genomes from a $\sim$7,000 year old early farmer from Stuttgart in Germany, an $\sim$8,000 year old hunter-gatherer from Luxembourg, and seven $\sim$8,000 year old hunter-gatherers from southern Sweden. We analyzed these data together with other ancient genomes and 2,345 contemporary humans to show that the great majority of present-day Europeans derive from at least three highly differentiated populations: West European Hunter-Gatherers (WHG), who contributed ancestry to all Europeans but not to Near Easterners; Ancient North Eurasians (ANE), who were most closely related to Upper Paleolithic Siberians and contributed to both Europeans and Near Easterners; and Early European Farmers (EEF), who were mainly of Near Eastern origin but also harbored WHG-related ancestry. We model these populations' deep relationships and show that EEF had $\sim$44% ancestry from a "Basal Eurasian" lineage that split prior to the diversification of all other non-African lineages.

Abstract

A richly furnished grave of an elite woman from the Hallstatt period was discovered close to the Heuneburg, the earliest proto-urban settlement north of the Alps. Dendrochronological analysis of timbers from the grave chamber dates the burial to 583 BC, the earliest of a series of such burials north of the Alps and a key anchor in the absolute chronology of the Early Iron Age in Europe. The woman was adorned with gold, bronze, jet and amber jewellery; gold filigree objects, amber fibulae and items of horse-head armour suggest close connections south of the Alps. An infant female burial close to the main grave included gold jewellery made for a child but similar to that of the woman. Abstract

Early Archaic human skeletal remains found in a burial context in Lapa do Santo in east-central Brazil provide a rare glimpse into the lives of hunter-gatherer communities in South America, including their rituals for dealing with the dead. These included the reduction of the body by means of mutilation, defleshing, tooth removal, exposure to fire and possibly cannibalism, followed by the secondary burial of the remains according to strict rules. In a later period, pits were filled with disarticulated bones of a single individual without signs of body manipulation, demonstrating that the region was inhabited by dynamic groups in constant transformation over a period of centuries. Vom Burgberg zur Donau: neue Untersuchungen zur Heuneburg (2008-2012) Im Verlauf der letzten zehn Jahre hat sich das Bild der späthallstattzeitlichen Heuneburg grundlegend verändert. Während sich die Forschungen des DFG-Schwerpunktprogramms »Frühkeltische Fürstensitze« auf den Bereich der Vorburg und die Außensiedlung konzentrierten, rückte seit 2008 der eigentliche Burgberg wieder in den Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Gleichzeitig konnten auf der Ostterrasse und im Bereich des Donautals unmittelbar unterhalb der Heuneburg aufsehenerregende Entdeckungen gemacht werden, die vollkommen neue, unerwartete Fragen zu Aspekten wie Kulthandlungen, Bestattungswesen und Chronologie aufwerfen. Soziale Binnengliederung im linearbandkeramischen Gräberfeld von Schwetzingen (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis) Die vorliegende Studie stellt den Versuch dar, anhand der hypervariablen Stirnhöhlenform mögliche Verwandtschaftsstrukturen und damit auch eventuelle Hinweise auf soziale Strukturen aus dem linearbandkeramischen Gräberfeld von Schwetzingen zu rekonstruieren. CT-Scans von 58 subadulten und adulten Individuen bilden die Basis der Untersuchung. Zur Beschreibung und Analyse wurde ein binäres Scoring-Schema entwickelt, in dem die verschiedenen Attribute der Stirnhöhlenmorphologie berücksichtigt werden. Vier verwandtschaftliche Gruppen konnten rekonstruiert werden, die im Vergleich mit den archäologischen Hinterlassenschaften ein durch Abstammungslinien oder Klanstrukturen geprägtes Sozialsystem wahrscheinlich machen. Abstract

Besiedlungs- und Kulturlandschaftsentwicklung im Umfeld der Heuneburg während der Hallstatt- und Frühlatènezeit – erste Ergebnisse Im Rahmen eines von der DFG finanzierten Langfristprojektes soll in den nächsten zwölf Jahren das weitere und das nähere Umfeld des späthallstattzeitlichen »Fürstensitzes« Heuneburg erforscht werden. Einen Schwerpunkt bildet in den ersten Jahren die Untersuchung mehrerer in einem Umkreis von 20 km um die Heuneburg liegender Höhensiedlungen. In den Jahren 2014 und 2015 fanden Grabungen auf der Alte Burg bei Langenenslingen statt. Es stellte sich heraus, dass der gesamte Bergsporn künstlich überprägt wurde. Der Plateaurand wurde verbreitert, indem zahlreiche aus Steinen aufgeschichtete Stützriegel mit dazwischen eingebrachten lockeren Steineinfüllungen errichtet wurden. Auf dem Plateau kam es zu großflächigen Planierungen, um das Gelände einzuebnen. Die Nordostspitze wurde durch mächtige, wohl bis zu 10 m hohe Trockenmauern abgeriegelt. Es gibt einige Indizien dafür, dass die Alte Burg in der Eisenzeit Kultplatzfunktionen ausgeübt haben könnte. Eine andere Grabung diente der Klärung der Funktion und Datierung einer etwa 1 ha großen Viereckanlage nahe dem hallstattzeitlichen Großgrabhügel Hohmichele. Den Ergebnissen zufolge handelte es sich dabei nicht um einen Kultplatz, sondern um eine spätlatènezeitliche Viereckschanze, die im Bereich eines älteren hallstattzeitlichen Gräberfeldes angelegt wurde. Dafür sprechen neben dem Lt D1-zeitlichen Fundmaterial Befunde in Form eines Brunnens, eines Ofens und von Siedlungsgruben. In der Heuneburgregion gibt es insgesamt sieben derartige Viereckschanzen.
