Given that the experiences of Filipino parents around distance learning education amid the COVID-19 pandemic have been overlooked in research, this study used an embedded mixed methods design to survey 837 Filipino parents' needs regarding distance learning of their children under primary level during the pandemic. Findings revealed that although the parents generally appeared ready for the new set-up, certain overwhelming observations regarding their responses indicated their needs and/or concerns. Specifically, they need orientation, training, or workshop on distance learning, knowledge and skills facilitative to distance learning, excellent internet access, support on the psychological burden, consideration of teachers, increase of teacher scaffolds, preference for face-to-face classes, and constant parent-teacher communication. These concerns of the parent-stakeholders in the Philippine educational landscape are pivotal in shaping educational infrastructure during emergency times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The observation of informalities in academic writing has become tremendous in recent years, as revealed by a plethora of cross-cultural and diachronic studies. Different users of English have already been explored; however, none has centered on the case of English as a Second Language (henceforth ESL) writers, such as Filipino academic writing scholars, in terms of delineating informalities in their academic writing discourse over time. For this reason, this quantitative study aimed to diachronically analyze informality features in academic writing of Filipino ESL researchers in the applied linguistics field. Using the framework of Hyland and Jiang (2017), a significant association between the years of writing and overall use of informalities was found, signifying an increasing number of informality features as time progresses. Specifically, there were five informality features that the writers noticeably observed over the years. However, only two categories of the informality framework, unattended anaphoric pronouns, and sentence-initial conjunctions or conjunctive adverbs, were most pronounced in writing and were increasing. On the other hand, the categories of first-person pronouns, sentence-final prepositions, and listing expressions were less salient and were decreasing. This paper ends with pedagogical implications for academic writing instructions as far as appropriating such features as (in)formal is concerned.

Authorial stance in academic writing is one of the vital aspects that recognises the evolution of writing to a more context-rich discourse, accounting for writer-reader relationships. Despite the growing interest in diachronic studies on stance markers, only a few studies have considered how stance changed in the recent years in the context of English as a Second Language (henceforth ESL) writing specifically that of Filipino writers. Consequently, this quantitative research diachronically examined stance markers in published research articles of Filipino scholars in the applied linguistics discipline. Chi-square test revealed that the overall use of stance markers varies over the years. Specifically, there is a decline in boosters and attitude markers and an increase in hedges and self-mentions. The overall quantitative findings revealed that Filipinos are becoming less subjective in writing while showcasing idea ownership in writing. This study ends with implications of the findings for academic writing instructions among Filipino writers. Future research directions are likewise provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of this study is to synthesize copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) using Coffee arabica extract at room temperature using simple methods, characterize nanoparticle generation, and explore the impact of extract concentration on the production of copper nanoparticles, followed by a qualitative phytochemical screening of coffee extract metabolites and CuNPs toxicity demonstration. To characterize nanoparticle generation, color change, and UV-visible spectrophotometer were explored, analyzing by the Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy detected the availability of major functional groups, and the X-ray diffractometer demonstrated nanoparticles size. Additionally, CuNPs safety was demonstrated by hemolysis assays. The results revealed that the Coffee arabica beans solution shifted copper ions into copper nanoparticles at room temperature within 15 min of reaction time, and also registered peak absorbance at 262 nm in 3 days and 30 days to conform synthesis and stability CuNPs. In addition, FTIR analyses demonstrated the corresponding bonds (-OH, C=C, and C-H) that are responsible for the formation of CuNPs. Furthermore, the XRD results reported CuNPs to have a monoclinic crystalline shape with a mean crystallite size of 16.3 nm, CuNPs were found to be harmless in hemolytic experiments. This research produces a new product that can bring digital learning experiences to elementary schools in the form of learning media and can solve several existing problems. This research focuses on solving learning problems that are still teacher-centered, there is no variety of learning media, and learning facilities are incomplete. The aims of this research are, (1) to produce valid products, (2) to produce practical products, (3) to produce effective products. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the development model by Borg & Gall. The subjects in this research were fourth grade students at SDN Tarokan 3. The results of this development research were: (1) comic media was declared valid by media experts with a validity percentage of 84.7%, (2) comic media was declared valid by material experts with a percentage of validity of 98.4%, (3) comic media was declared practical by the teacher with a practicality percentage of 97%, (4) comic media was declared effective with the N-gain test results showing an increase with an average value of 0.36 (medium increase ). Penelitian ini berfokus pada menyelesaikan permasalahan pembelajaran yang masih berpusat pada guru, tidak terdapat variasi media pembelajaran, serta sarana pembelajaran yang belum lengkap. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah, (1) menghasilkan produk yang valid, (2) menghasilkan produk yang praktis, (3) menghasilkan produk yang efektif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Research and Development (R&D) dengan model pengembangan oleh Borg & Gall. Subjek pada penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas IV SDN Tarokan 3. Hasil dari penelitian pengembangan ini adalah: (1) media komik dinyatakan valid oleh ahli media dengan persentase kevalidan sebesar 84,7%, (2) media komik dinyatakan valid oleh ahli materi dengan persentase kevalidan sebesar 98,4%, (3) media komik dinyatakan praktis oleh guru dengan persentase kepraktisan sebesar 97%, (4) media komik dinyatakan efektif dengan hasil uji N-gain menunjukkan peningkatan dengan nilai rata-rata sebesar 0,36 (peningkatan sedang). Genre-based studies on moves structure of research article (RA) abstracts have established variations across cultures. However, previous studies included at most two countries for comparisons of abstracts written by native against non-native speakers. With the advent of World Englishes, it is deemed more practical to examine abstracts across Englishes to determine the writing conventions of the L1, L2 and EFL speakers of English. Consequently, the present study is a structural move analysis of RA abstracts focusing on the macro-structural moves across the Englishes and the lexical verbs employed used in each move. It examined 36 RA abstracts from linguistics and language and education fields, consisting of 12 abstracts each from the Inner, Outer and Expanding Circles of English by Kachru (1992). Each abstract was segmented into moves using the Five-Move Model of Santos (1996), which includes moves: (1) Situating the Research (STR); (2) Presenting the Research (PTR); (3) Discussing the Methodology (DTM); (4) Summarizing the Findings, (STF), and (5) Discussing the Research (DTR). The study found that the Inner Circle of English has the structure: Abstract → (STR) + PTR + DTM + (STF) + (DTR). The Outer Circle has the structure: Abstract → (STR) + PTR + (DTM) + STF + DTR. The Expanding Circle has the structure: Abstract → (STR) + PTR + DTM + (STF) + (DTR). The formulaic structures of abstract moves revealed that the only common move across Englishes is PTR. Following the approach of Musa et al. (2015), the lexical verbs realizing the purpose of each of the rhetorical moves were listed in order to come up with lists of rhetorical verbs which can be used in structuring an RA abstract. Rhetorical move analyses of research article (RA) abstracts have established variations across cultures and disciplines; however, other non-native users of English, such as Filipino writers, in other disciplines, such as applied linguistics, may still need a reference guide in abstract writing for they are underexplored in contrastive analysis to the best of the researcher's knowledge. Hence, this study compared the rhetorical moves in the RA abstracts of Filipino and American writers who are published in two research journals related to applied linguistics discipline. The study also explored the underlying lexical verbs in each move in all the abstracts. Findings revealed that the moves Situating the Research (STR), Presenting the Research (PTR), and Discussing the Research (DTR) were obligatorily used by both groups of writers. On the other note, the moves Describing the Methodology (DTM) and Summarizing the Findings (STF) were obligatory only among Filipinos, showing their tendency to deviate from the conventions in abstract writing of Americans who are considered native speakers and norm providers. Furthermore, this study details lists of lexical verbs that may be used to realize a rhetorical intent of a move. Changes in the learning process during the pandemic affected student learning outcomes. As many as 68% of students score below 75 in computational mathematics courses. These results are not comparable to learning outcomes when learning takes place offline. The results of the interviews show that students have difficulty understanding the material when learning is done online. For this reason, a qualitative descriptive study was carried out which aimed to analyze and describe students' conceptual understanding abilities in solving matrix problems using the APOS stages. The research subjects were 3 students of the informatics engineering study program who had taken computational mathematics courses and received matrix material, were in the category of students with low, medium, and high conceptual understanding, and were able to communicate their thoughts orally and in writing. Data collection techniques were carried out through written tests, interviews, and observations. The results showed that students with low conceptual understanding were able to solve matrix problems up to the object stage and made calculation mistakes. Students with a moderate understanding of concepts can solve matrix problems up to the schematic stage but are not careful in doing calculations. Meanwhile, students with high conceptual understanding can solve matrix questions up to the schematic stage, determine the correct answer, make conclusions, and reflect on the problem-solving obtained.

The problem in this study is the lack of use of media in the learning process. This indirectly affects student learning outcomes. This type of research is research and development (r&d), researchers develop miniature learning media (Windmills and Solar Panels) on alternative energy sources for grade IV Elementary School. The purpose of the study was to determine student learning outcomes using miniature media. This study took samples from 28 students of SDN MRICAN 1 Kediri City. The development model used in this research is ADDIE. The ADDIE model has five stages, namely (1) Analysis (2) Design (3) Development (4) Implementation (5) Evaluation. The data collection technique used is in the form of a questionnaire through data analysis techniques of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The results of the research on the development of miniature learning media obtained include: (1) the development of miniature learning media for class IV alternative energy sources at SD Negeri Mrican 1 in accordance with the ADDIE development procedure. (2) the miniature media is declared suitable for use seen from: (a) the results of media validation get a percentage value of 90% and material validation obtains a percentage value of 89%, (b) the results of the teacher's practicality questionnaire get a value of 90%, (c) the results of the student response questionnaire in the trials that have been carried out, the percentage value is 91%. Based on the statement above, it can be concluded that miniature media has a significant influence on student learning outcomes on alternative energy sources.

Inflation is one of the effects of a prolonged economic crisis that hit any country. Inflation is a situation where there is an increase in general prices which continues over the long term. The objective of this research is to analyze the effect of the Amount of Money Supply and Exchange Rate, Interest Rate, Return Sharia against Inflation Rate in Indonesia. The type of this research is a quantitative study, research to explain the influence of independent variables to dependent variables. Dependent Variable used is Inflation Rate (percentages), Independent Variables are Money Supply, Exchange Rate (Indonesian Rupiah to US Dollar), Interest Rate, Return Sharia. The models will be calculated with VECM (Vector Error Correction Model) as it easy to calculate and interpret. In this case a correlation between dependent variables and independent variables. To determine the inflation rate effect from 2011-2017.The result of this research determines that in long term Independent variables has significant influence to Dependent variable (Inflation). Even in Islam and Conventional side. One of variable such as M1 in Islam has result 5.34041, its indicating that the result has significant value again inflation in the long term. While in Conventional side M1 value is 4.70475, that’s mean the result has significant too against inflation, cause the value both of them bigger than T Table. Another variable such as the exchange rate for the long term has negative influence to the inflation around -18.28331 which means exchange rate has significant influence to the inflation. Both of the last variables are interest and return sharia’ has significant too again inflation, the value around 0.443061 for interest rate, and 2.389915 for return sharia. It means both of these variables has significant values again inflation, cause of T Statistic bigger than T Table.

Abstract: The difficulty students in understanding caused by several things. One of them is a form of applied learning is still conventional, where professors only using methods or learning activities are still centered on the lecturer. Besides lecturer of mathematics at this time tend to teach less variable, while the students only listen, take notes and work on the problems. This will result in the student becomes inactive, lazy thinking, and depending on the lecturer. Yet in the world of education has changed, that science is found, formed and developed by the students themselves actively. As one way to enable the student is using one of the methods of active learning that is by applying Piaget's theory where this method to encourage students to study according to the ability of thinking. To the researchers use a method by applying Piaget's theory as an attempt to improve the achievement of students on the material cubes and blocks. Objective This study aims to determine the increase achievement of students on the material cube and Blaok through Application of Piaget's theory in Student PGSD UNP Kediri. Step-by-step learning as follows: (1) the lecturer asked the students to form groups according to their choice, (2) professors assign tasks to each group for discussion in accordance with the specified time), (3) the lecturer asks alternately presentation in front of the class according to material that has been given previously (4) students have a right to ask a group presentation of material in front of belium understood, (5) Together with students lecturers provide conclusions about the material that was submitted. This research is a classroom action research. Subjects of the study were students PGSD UNP Kediri. Data collection techniques in this class action consists of tests and observations. Data were collected by observation and tests. Then the evaluation test results were analyzed using individual completeness and classical. Tests carried out at the end of the cycle to determine learning outcomes. Observations conducted during each meeting and learning takes place. Salah satunya adalah bentuk pembelajaran yang diterapkan masih bersifat konvensional, dimana dosen hanya menggunakan metode atau kegiatan pembelajaran masih berpusat pada dosen. Selain itu Dosen matematika saat ini cenderung mengajar kurang bervariasi, sedangkan mahasiswa hanya mendengar, mencatat dan mengerjakan soal. Hal ini akan mengakibatkan mahasiswa menjadi tidak aktif, malas berfikir, dan bergantung pada dosen. Padahal dalam dunia pendidikan sudah berubah, bahwasanya ilmu pengetahuan ditemukan, dibentuk, dan dikembangkan oleh mahasiswa sendiri secara aktif. Sebagai salah satu cara untuk mengaktifkan mahasiswa adalah dengan menggunakan salah satu metode pembelajaran aktif yaitu dengan menerapkan Teori Piaget dimana metode ini mengajak mahasiswa untuk belajar sesuai dengan kemampuan berfikirnya. Untuk itu peneliti menggunakan metode dengan menerapkan Teori Piaget sebagai upaya untuk meningkatkan prestasi belajar mahasiswa pada materi kubus dan balok. Tujuan Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan prestasi belajar mahasiswa pada materi Kubus dan Balok melalui Penerapan Teori Piaget Pada Mahasiswa PGSD UNP Kediri. Langkah-langkah pembelajarannya sebagai berikut: (1) dosen meminta mahasiswa untuk membentuk kelompok sesuai dengan pilihan mereka, (2) dosen memberikan tugas kepada masing-masing kelompok untuk didiskusikan sesuai dengan waktu yang ditentukan), (3) dosen meminta secara bergantian presentasi di depan kelas sesuai dengan materi yang telah diberikan sebelumnya (4) mahasiswa berhak bertanya kepada kelompok yang presentasi didepan materi yang belium dipahami, (5) Bersama dengan mahasiswa dosen memberikan kesimpulan mengenai materi yang telah disampaikan. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Subyek penelitiannya adalah mahasiswa PGSD UNP Kediri. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam tindakan kelas ini terdiri atas tes dan hasil observasi. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan observasi dan tes. Kemudian hasil tes evaluasi dianalisis menggunakan ketuntasan individual dan klasikal. Tes dilaksanakan pada akhir siklus untuk mengetahui hasil belajar. Observasi dilaksanakan setiap pertemuan dan selama pembelajaran berlangsung. Abstract Background The Nias district of the North Sumatra Province of Indonesia has long been known to be endemic for malaria. Following the economic crisis at the end of 1998 and the subsequent tsunami and earthquake, in December 2004 and March 2005, respectively, the malaria control programme in the area deteriorated. The present study aims to provide baseline data for the establishment of a suitable malaria control programme in the area and to analyse the frequency distribution of drug resistance alleles associated with resistance to chloroquine and sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine. Methods Malariometric and entomology surveys were performed in three subdistricts. Thin and thick blood smears were stained with Giemsa and examined under binocular light microscopy. Blood blots on filter paper were also prepared for isolation of parasite and host DNA to be used for molecular analysis of band 3 (SAO), pfcrt, pfmdr1, dhfr, and dhps. In addition, haemoglobin measurement was performed in the second and third surveys for the subjects less than 10 years old. Results Results of the three surveys revealed an average slide positivity rate of 8.13%, with a relatively higher rate in certain foci. Host genetic analysis, to identify the Band 3 deletion associated with Southeast Asian Ovalocytosis (SAO), revealed an overall frequency of 1.0% among the 1,484 samples examined. One hundred six Plasmodium falciparum isolates from three sub-districts were successfully analysed. Alleles of the dhfr and dhps genes associated with resistance to sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine, dhfr C59R and S108N, and dhps A437G and K540E, were present at frequencies of 52.2%, 82.5%, 1.18% and 1.18%, respectively. The pfmdr1 alleles N86Y and N1042D, putatively associated with mefloquine resistance, were present at 31.4% and 2%, respectively. All but one sample carried the pfcrt 76T allele associated with chloroquine resistance. Entomologic surveys identified three potential anopheline vectors in the area, Anopheles barbirostris, Anopheles kochi and Anopheles sundaicus. Conclusion The cross sectional surveys in three different sub-districts of Nias District clearly demonstrated the presence of relatively stable endemic foci of malaria in Nias District, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Molecular analysis of the malaria parasite isolates collected from this area strongly indicates resistance to chloroquine and a growing threat of resistance to sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine. This situation highlights the need to develop sustainable malaria control measures through regular surveillance and proper antimalarial drug deployment.

Background: The burden of Aedes aegypti-transmitted viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika are increasing globally, fueled by urbanization and climate change, with some of the highest current rates of transmission in Asia. Local factors in the built environment have the potential to exacerbate or mitigate transmission., Methods: In 24 informal urban settlements in Makassar, Indonesia and Suva, Fiji, we tested children under 5 years old for evidence of prior infection with dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses by IgG serology. We used a catalytic model using seroprevalence and mean age to estimate annual incidence of dengue in each country. We also conducted detailed questionnaires to evaluate environmental risk factors for a positive serology result. Dengue risk factors were evaluated for children by univariate and multivariable logistic regression accounting for settlement as a fixed effect. Trash and flooding were additionally evaluated as dengue risk factors at the settlement level by univariate linear regression., Results: In Fiji and Indonesia respectively, 46% and 33% of children under 5 years old were seropositive for dengue, 3% and 3% for chikungunya, and 9% and 2% for Zika. In Indonesia, children living in a household where trash is routinely collected and removed were significantly less likely to be dengue seropositive in both unadjusted and adjusted models [adjusted model: OR 0.3 (95% CI: 0.1-0.8)]. In Indonesia, settlements with a higher proportion of households reporting flooding also had lower dengue rates (slope = 0.44; p-value: <0.05)., Conclusions: Household trash collection and community flood management are important targets for interventions to mitigate the increasing risk of Aedes aegypti-transmitted viruses., Competing Interests: Declarations.
