SOCIAL network theory ,RESOURCE mobilization ,BUSINESSPEOPLE ,MASS mobilization ,SOCIAL networks - Abstract
Drawing on resource orchestration and social network theories, this study examines the relationships between bricolage, optimization, and new venture performance. We argue that optimization (i.e. standard application of resources acquired from resource markets) increases performance whereas bricolage (i.e. improvisation and unconventional resource applications) causes the opposite effect. We also argue that the effect of these resource mobilization approaches is contingent upon entrepreneurs' network diversity. Using survey data from agricultural ventures in Nigeria, we found support for our propositions. The findings also show that entrepreneurs' social capital affects the value of resource orchestration in relationship-based economic systems. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research investigates how and to which extent the social capital inherent in a firm's external relationships to diverse business partners contributes to the firm's intellectual capital and in turn fosters its innovativeness. We apply the Social Capital Theory to an inter-organisational context and show how a firm's social relationships with its various external partners contribute to its intellectual capital, and how these contributions differ between different types of partners (e.g., customers vs. suppliers). In contrast to intra-organisational contexts, we show that the association between social capital and intellectual capital is positive, neutral, or even negative depending on the external partner's position vis-à-vis a firm's supply chain and the type of knowledge. Using data from 153 German manufacturing firms, the results of a PLS-based analysis provide important insights into how and through which mechanisms firms can become successful innovators. IT identity plays a significant role in individuals' IT adoption and use behaviors and can impact job satisfaction. However, other individual traits, like the digital mindset, previously showed to also affect the effects of the intertwining of IT and workplaces on job satisfaction. Therefore, we examine the role of a digital mindset in shaping IT and job identity and survey 167 employees. By analyzing the relationship between these concepts, the paper contributes to a better understanding of how identities are formed and how they affect job satisfaction in the digitally-enabled workplace. Our results demonstrate that IT identity’s effect on job satisfaction is fully mediated by job identity. We also reveal that a digital mindset moderates the relationship between IT and job identities. Further, we discuss the key challenges and opportunities associated with the adoption and use of IS in organizations and provide insights into the future directions of IS research. Overall, we contribute to the ongoing discourse on the role of IT identity and digital mindset in the workplace and provide valuable insights for researchers and practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The disruptive nature of digitalization and the complexity and ambiguity of their technical properties require many new skills from employees today. Recent research emphasizes that the employees' digital mindset plays an essential role in digital transformation by leveraging employee engagement. This paper aims to advance the understanding of how the behavioral outcomes of digital mindset, which encompasses interpersonal interaction, focus of attention, enthusiasm for development, perspective on setbacks, and construal of effort, can be positively influenced during digital initiatives. We develop a novel research model integrating two literature streams: information technology and mindset. We conceptually link back to the behavioral outcomes of digital mindset by looking at the influence of IT governance mechanisms as potential antecedents. Our model explains how IT governance mechanisms influence the behavioral outcomes of digital mindset and helps future researchers by providing propositions on the impact of IT governance mechanisms toward more employee engagement. INFORMATION technology ,EMPLOYEES ,TECHNOLOGICAL innovations ,DIGITIZATION ,DIGITAL technology - Abstract
The increasing use of technology in personal and professional environments has led to the development of an information technology (IT) identity, which describes the extent to which individuals view IT as integral to their sense of self. Further, technology paradoxes describe the contradictory nature of IT, which can lead to behavioral disengagement, causing significant disruptions in enterprise digitization. To better understand the interrelationships of IT identity, technological paradoxes, and user behavior, the study develops a theory-based model to explore the interplay between IT identity and technology paradoxes and their effects on behavioral disengagement. The findings reveal that IT identity mitigates the perception of technology paradoxes and impacts coping behaviors. We contribute to literature by quantifying and validating their effects and suggesting opportunities for future research. That way, practitioners can develop more effective strategies for promoting engagement and addressing disengagement among employees or users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ORGANIZATIONAL change ,CUSTOMER orientation ,DIGITIZATION ,ORGANIZATIONAL structure ,OCCUPATIONAL roles - Abstract
As digital technology continues to advance, organizations require more flexibility to meet the needs of their customers and remain competitive. To do so, many incumbent organizations fundamentally change their established structures and processes to implement scaled-agile organizations (SAO), emulating digital organizations and leveraging development speed and customer focus. However, when everything changes, there are significant effects on the employees’ identities. Thus, we explore how implementing an SAO affects employees’ professional role identities (PRI). The paper follows a case study approach analyzing two cases with 21 interviews, observational, and secondary data collected over a period of 18 months. We contribute to the literature by identifying three effects of an SAO implementation on PRI (threat, empowerment, and extension) and describing how individuals react based on the effect on their PRI. We inform practitioners on the overall SAO implementation process and consequences for professionals, offering a new perspective on organizational transformation challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Innovation champions often play a pivotal role in facilitating new ideas and technology-based innovations within organisations. The rise of digital technology has led to radical changes in the nature of innovation and calls for an assessment of existing knowledge on innovation champions' activities and their influence on organisations and networks. This paper provides a systematic, interdisciplinary literature review on innovation champions from an individual and organisational perspective. Based on a search of 149 high-quality journals and conference proceedings, we identified 92 articles as relevant and synthesised prior knowledge on innovation champions. We find that, whereas innovation champions' activities have been explored in detail, research on innovation champions' influence, especially on networks, has been limited. Furthermore, we identify research gaps with respect to differences in innovation champions' activities at distinct stages of the innovation lifecycle and the formation of innovation champions' networks.

SUSTAINABILITY ,DIGITAL technology ,SOCIAL entrepreneurship ,SOCIAL innovation ,INFORMATION storage & retrieval systems - Abstract
Digital technologies can help to fulfill social needs through innovative and socially-embedded solutions. The research fields of digital sustainability, digital social innovation, and social entrepreneurship are about exploring how the tools of our digital age can be designed, adapted, and aligned to achieve local and global social needs. However, despite the current interest, there remain conceptual ambiguities regarding the focus of each field. This review examines current research by reviewing 24 articles across the Basket of Eight and two IS conferences. Our results clarify the different focus areas within each research field but also show that the three research fields overlap due to the remaining conceptual ambiguities. To enable more focus in future research, we discuss implications regarding the conceptual overlap, propose first steps to address them, and close by developing eight avenues for future research. - Abstract
In this paper, we present the report from a professional development workshop (PDW) that addressed questions at the intersection of digital innovation and digital transformation at ICIS 2019 in Munich, Germany. The PDW focused on sharing insights into 1) the current state of research on digital innovation, 2) the current state of research on digital transformation, and 3) the methodological and theoretical challenges in conducting research on digital innovation and/or digital transformation. Accordingly, the PDW featured three keynotes on digital innovation and digital transformation as a basis for interactive roundtable discussions among authors about their ongoing research projects. Across the three keynotes and the roundtable discussions, some common patterns emerged. In particular, reoccurring themes included the challenge of balancing new and old elements of organization and technology in digital innovation and transformation and methodological challenges related to empirical research design and theory choice. In this paper, we synthesize ideas that we developed prior to, during, and after the PDW. We also present some suggestions for future research.

- Abstract
Current research on digital innovation mainly focuses on the recombination of digital and physical components, yet little attention is given to the recombination of knowledge. Since digital technology enables access to virtually unlimited amounts of knowledge, we explore the strategies used by Digital Innovation Labs to access different types of knowledge and uncover five distinct knowledge recombination paths. Based on our results we develop seven propositions that address the role of different types of knowledge involved in recombination. In doing so, we take a first step toward unraveling the pathways of knowledge recombination and highlight the importance of knowledge recombination for future research on digital innovation. ICIS 2019 Proceedings. 7, Munich, Germany, Dec. 15-18. Consumerization, democratization, and platform business logics are not only creating opportunities for new product development, new business models, and new ways of organizing, but in addition are also driving the transformation of established organizational resources and routines. This PDW is designed to address questions at the intersection of digital innovation and digital transformation. These topics are interrelated as successive waves of digital innovation within an industry or at the level of an individual firm and its ecosystem may lead to fundamental transformation of structures, roles and management, culture, competencies and skills, and so forth, depending on the influence of barriers such as inertia and resistance to change. By exploring how and why the new organizing logic of digital innovation impacts and transforms incumbent firms, the workshop addresses questions from four different areas: (1) Why the new logic of digital innovation triggers a digital transformation in incumbent firms; (2) the drivers of this digital transformation in incumbent firms' immediate environment; (3) how these drivers may under certain conditions alter the structure, strategy, culture, competencies, skills and technology platforms of incumbent firms; (4) the trajectories of digital transformation journeys inside incumbent firms.

ICIS 2019 Proceedings. 7, Munich, Germany, Dec. 15-18. © 40th International Conference on Information Systems, ICIS 2019. All rights reserved. The challenges of the digital transformation have led many firms to create the position of the chief digital officer (CDO). Prior literature has shown that firms may benefit from CDOs, who champion digital innovation and promote digital initiatives. Yet, the conditions under which shareholders value CDOs' appointment are unknown. Using an event study methodology we examine investors' reactions to firms announcing CDOs' appointment and consider interaction effects with organizational and individual characteristics. Our analysis shows that stock markets react positively to the announcement of CDOs' appointment, especially when firms assign a specialist role, CDOs' appointment does not lead to the parallel existence of CDO and chief information officer, and CDOs exhibit an educational background or professional experience in areas other than IT. By connecting with existing literature on IS-related senior management appointments, we demonstrate under which conditions CDOs play a strategic role for managing the digital transformation in organizations.

Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Wirtschaftsinformatik, Siegen, Germany, 23. - 27. Feb. 2019. Despite being acknowledged for playing a pivotal role in facilitating innovations in the digital age, there is a lack of research on the multifaceted role of digital innovation actors. This paper provides a systematic, multidisciplinary literature review on innovation actors in a digital and non-digital context. Based on a search of 149 high-quality journals and conference proceedings, we identified 110 articles as relevant and categorized as well as synthesized the knowledge on innovation actors' role and organizational antecedents in a digital and non-digital context. We find an increasing focus on innovation actors' role in user communities in a digital context. Moreover, literature on organizational antecedents puts a stronger emphasis on allocating resources to innovation actors outside the organization. By analyzing extant research we provide a comprehensive summary on current knowledge and outline opportunities for future research on digital innovation actors.

While the information systems literature highlights the business opportunities that digital innovation provides, the management literature foregrounds the challenges of path-dependent decision-makers face to exploit such potential. To bring these views together, we examine the impact of digital innovation on path-dependent decision-making. For this purpose, we conducted an experiment with 148 practitioners. Our study indicates that digital innovation has a negative impact on path-dependent decision-making, thus leading path-dependent decision-makers to deviate from their decision path. Furthermore, our results suggest that risk propensity and opportunity-threat perception mediate this relationship. Our study complements the literature on digital innovation with insights into the challenges of incumbents, adds to the literature on path dependence by shedding light on the behavior of path-dependent decision-makers in the face of digital innovation, and demonstrates how scholars can examine phenomena on digital innovation and path dependence with experiments.

- Abstract
The disruptive nature of digital innovation has led incumbent organizations to face enormous challenges and pressure. To address the fundamentally new nature of digital innovations, incumbents have established new managerial roles, such as Chief Digital Officers (CDOs), to champion innovation. We explore the role these innovation champions play for digital innovation success and argue that internal reorganization and the sourcing of external knowledge constitute important mechanisms through which CDOs might contribute to organizations’ digital innovation success. We will empirically test our proposed research model using longitudinal data on the world’s largest companies. Our study is expected to contribute to literature on knowledge recombination and innovation management by examining how innovation champions at the C-level use internal reorganization and sourcing of external knowledge to enhance digital innovation success.

- Abstract
Based on a systematic literature analysis, this paper takes stock of the current landscape of research on innovation champions from an individual and organizational perspective: 149 journals and conference proceedings were examined on the topic of innovation champions. 85 articles were identified as relevant and systematically categorized according to two perspectives by synthesizing enablers of innovation champions on the individual (e.g. skills) and organizational level (e.g. knowledge management). While our analysis illuminates a high variety of enablers that influence innovation champions, the descriptive findings show a stronger focus of innovation champion studies on individual level enablers. Our literature review points out the lack of research on negative individual characteristics (e.g. narcissism), on the innovation champion in the IS context and on formalized groups of innovation champions (e.g. organizational units).

Management studies - Abstract
In this chapter, we add to the contemporary debate on path dependence in the management literature by examining how the scope of action evolves in lock-ins. For this purpose, we draw on qualitative data of the German newspaper industry from 1995 to date. Our study indicates that the scope of action in lock-ins continuously changes as new technological opportunities emerge and disappear. Our results also suggest that path-dependent firms have windows of opportunity available that remain unexploited due to cognitive and normative barriers. Furthermore, our empirical evidence indicates that although windows of opportunity may temporarily close, the scope of action reopens when further technological opportunities emerge. Our study contributes to a better understanding of lock-ins as an underresearched phase of path dependence, provides a more comprehensive process understanding for the inability of path-dependent firms to exploit technological opportunities, and offers practical implications on how path-dependent firms may leave their path.

This paper provides an integrative picture of the state of the art of the Resource Mobilisation in Entrepreneurial Ventures (RMEV) literature through a systematic review of 225 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 1987 and 2019. Our objective is to synthesise the relevant resource mobilisation-centred work into a framework that contributes to and shapes our understanding of the RMEV phenomenon. We construct the identified themes through a process of interpretation and representation in which the information we study remains contextualised. Based on the themes we identify, we suggest some directions for further research. Moreover, by simultaneously considering the opportunity exploitation and resource-constrained environment assumptions in a coherent framework, we provide a conceptual bridge between these two RMEV assumptions. The constructed framework facilitates a better understanding of the emergence and performance of entrepreneurial ventures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
