1. Periodically activated physics-informed neural networks for assimilation tasks for three-dimensional Rayleigh-B\'enard convection

Abstract

We apply physics-informed neural networks to three-dimensional Rayleigh-B\'enard convection in a cubic cell with a Rayleigh number of Ra = 10^6 and a Prandtl number of Pr = 0.7 to assimilate the velocity vector field from given temperature fields and vice versa. With the respective ground truth data provided by a direct numerical simulation, we are able to evaluate the performance of the different activation functions applied (sine, hyperbolic tangent and exponential linear unit) and different numbers of neurons (32, 64, 128, 256) for each of the five hidden layers of the multi-layer perceptron. The main result is that the use of a periodic activation function (sine) typically benefits the assimilation performance in terms of the analyzed metrics, correlation with the ground truth and mean average error. The higher quality of results from sine-activated physics-informed neural networks is also manifested in the probability density function and power spectra of the inferred velocity or temperature fields. 7. Sessile condensate droplets as quasi-static wall deformations in direct numerical simulations of channel flow with condensation

Abstract

Condensation is an important aspect of many flow applications due to the universal presence of humidity in the air at ambient conditions. For direct numerical simulations of such flows, simulating the gas phase as a mixture characterized by temperature and humidity coupled by the release and absorption of latent heat has been shown to yield results consistent with multiphase direct numerical simulations at reduced costs. Modeling sessile droplets as quasi-static deformations based on the underlying condensation rates at the surface extends the single-phase approach to include the interaction between droplets and flow while retaining the advantages of simulating the gas phase only. The results of simulations of turbulent flow through a cooled, vertical channel with and without droplets show increased turbulent transport of heat and vapor due to the presence of condensate droplets, both in the immediate vicinity of the droplets and for the channel as a whole. 10. Turbulent kinetic energy transport in oscillatory pipe flow

Abstract

Laminar as well as turbulent oscillatory pipe flows occur in many fields of biomedical science and engineering. Pulmonary air flow and vascular blood flow are usually laminar, because shear forces acting on the physiological system ought to be small. However, frictional losses and shear stresses vary considerably with transition to turbulence. This plays an important role in cases of e.g. artificial respiration or stenosis. On the other hand, in piston engines and reciprocating thermal/chemical process devices, turbulent or transitional oscillatory flows affect mixing properties, and also mass and heat transfer. In contrast to the extensively investigated statistically steady wall bounded shear flows, rather little work has been devoted to the onset, amplification and decay of turbulence in pipe flows driven by an unsteady external force. Experiments [1, 3, 6] indicate that transition to turbulence depends on only one parameter, i.e. Re_{\delta} \sim Re/Wo with a critical value of about 550, at least for Womersley numbers Wo > 7. We perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) of oscillatory pipe flows at several combinations of Re and Wo to extend the validity of this critical value to higher Wo. 11. On phase asymmetries in oscillatory pipe flow

Abstract

We present results from direct numerical simulations (DNS) of oscillatory pipe flow at several dimensionless frequencies Wo = {6.5, 13, 26} and one fixed shear Reynolds number Re_{\tau} = 1440. Starting from a fully-developed turbulent velocity field at that Re_{\tau}, the oscillatory flow either relaminarises or reaches a conditionally turbulent or strongly asymmetric state depending on Wo. The numerical method is validated by demonstrating excellent agreement of our DNS results with experimental data and analytical predictions from literature for the limiting cases of non-oscillating but turbulent and oscillating but laminar pipe flow. For an oscillating turbulent pipe flow we further found a very good agreement between qualitative descriptions of the characteristic flow features observed in experiments and our DNS. Here, we focus on the observation of a strongly asymmetric behaviour between the positive and the negative half-cycles of the oscillatory pipe flow at Wo=6.5., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures (colour)

12. Condensation-induced flow structure modifications in turbulent channel flow investigated in direct numerical simulations

Abstract

The turbulent flow of a fluid carrying trace amounts of a condensable species through a differentially cooled vertical channel geometry is simulated using single-phase direct numerical simulations. The release of latent heat during condensation is modeled by interdependent temperature and vapor concentration source terms governing the relation between the removal of excess vapor from the system and the associated local increase in fluid temperature. A coupling between condensation and turbulence is implemented via solutal and thermal buoyancy. When compared to simulations of an identical system without phase transition modeling, the modifications of the subcooled boundary layer due to the transient and highly localized release of latent heat could be observed. A separate analysis of fluid before and after phase transition events shows a clear increase in post-interaction streak spacing, with the release of latent heat during condensation events opposing the cooling effect of the channel wall and the associated damping of turbulence., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures. 20. Large-scale reorientation in cubic Rayleigh–Bénard convection measured with particle tracking velocimetry.

Abstract

Three-dimensional velocity fields of a large-scale reorientation in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection at $ {\rm Ra} = 2.5\cdot 10^9 $ Ra = 2.5 ⋅ 10 9 in a 300 mm cubic water cell are measured using particle tracking velocimetry. Reorientations are rare events occurring about once every three days in our setup, involve the large-scale circulation switching between cell diagonals. The dominant flow structures of the reorientation are extracted from the measurement data using POD supported by symmetries of the cubic cell to mimic long time series of reorientation events. The decomposition reveals degenerate mode pairs. The first six modes of the decomposition account for about 70% of the total energy and contain the major coherent structures. Modes 1-3 reflect the orientation and dynamics of the large-scale circulation, and modes 4-6 provide the orientation and dynamics of the corner circulations. Abstract

We examine the Markov properties of the three velocity components of a turbulent flow generated by a DNS simulation of the flow around an airfoil section. The spectral element code Nektar has been used to generate a well resolved flow field around an fx79w-151a airfoil profile at a Reynolds number of Re=5000 and an angle of attack of {\alpha} = 12{\deg}. Due to a homogeneous geometry in the spanwise direction, a Fourier expansion has been used for the third dimension of the simulation. In the wake of the profile the flow field shows a von Karman street like behavior with the vortices decaying in the wake which trigger a turbulent field. Time series of the 3D flow field were extracted from the flow at different locations to analyze the stochastic features. In particular the existence of Markov properties in the flow have been shown for different cases in the surrounding of the airfoil. This is of basic interest as it indicates that fine structures of turbulence can be replaced by stochastic processes. Turbulent and Markovian scales are being determined in the turbulent field and limits of standard Gaussian Langevin processes are being determined by the reconstruction of a flow field in time and space.
