Successful restoration of semi‐natural grasslands on grasslands previously subject to intensive management needs to overcome manifold barriers. These include high soil fertility, the dominance of a few fast‐growing plant species, degraded soil faunal communities and missing propagules of the targeted above‐ and below‐ground flora and fauna. A combination of removing the topsoil and introducing propagules of target plants has become one of the major tools for nature conservation agencies and practitioners to reduce soil fertility and restore former species‐rich grasslands in various European countries.Using topsoil removal as a restoration measure has provoked an ongoing debate between supporting nature conservation and rejecting soil protection agencies. Although it favours species‐rich plant communities, it strongly disturbs soil communities and affects physical and chemical soil properties and processes. Currently, there is a lack of long‐term data to assess how restored grassland ecosystems develop and recover after topsoil removal. Here, we used two well‐established bioindicators, soil nematodes and plants, to quantify restoration success of topsoil removal in comparison with alternative restoration measures and target communities 22 years after intervention.The nematode community composition indicated reduced nutrient availability in the restored systems, as was aimed at by topsoil removal. Nevertheless, after this 22‐year period following topsoil removal, nematode composition and structure revealed successful recovery.Plant communities benefitted from the reduction of soil nutrients after topsoil removal as indicated by higher numbers of plant species and higher Shannon diversity. Furthermore, topsoil removal strongly promoted the re‐establishment of plant species of the target plant community.Synthesis and applications. Overall, our study demonstrates how a massive intervention by topsoil removal proved successful in converting intensively managed into species‐rich grasslands. This contrasts with the mild intervention of repeated mowing and removing of the harvested plant material. We show that, in the long run, potential negative effects of topsoil removal on the soil fauna can be successfully overcome and plant communities can develop into targeted species‐rich grassland. Above-belowground (AG-BG) studies typically focus on plant-mediated effects inflicted by living organisms. However, animal cadavers may also play an important role in AG-BG interactions. Here, we explore whether living and dead foliar-feeding and soil-dwelling invertebrates differentially affect plants and their associated AG and BG multitrophic communities. In a mesocosm study we separated effects of living and dead locusts (AG herbivores) and earthworms (BG detritivores) on experimental multitrophic communities consisting of eight plant species, an AG aphid and parasitoid community and a BG nematode community. We measured root and shoot biomass and determined plant community composition and densities of aphids, parasitoids and nematodes. Living locusts decreased total shoot and root biomass in the mesocosms, whereas living earthworms enhanced total root biomass. Cadavers of both invertebrates strongly increased total root and shoot biomass, and changed the plant community composition mainly via enhanced growth of grasses. Earthworm cadavers affected plant biomass and community composition more strongly than their living counterparts, while this was reversed for locusts. Structural equation models showed that aphids and parasitoids were influenced via changes in plant community composition. Nematode densities in the soil, especially those of bacterivorous and entomopathogenic nematodes, were strongly increased by dead invertebrates, but unaffected by living ones. We conclude that effects of invertebrates on plant growth and densities of AG and BG organisms strongly depend on whether the invertebrates are dead or alive. Remarkably, invertebrate cadavers may inflict even stronger effects than their living counterparts. ABSTRACT While nectaries are commonly found in flowers, some plants also form extrafloral nectaries on stems or leaves. For the first time in the family Brassicaceae, here we report extrafloral nectaries in Brassica juncea. The extrafloral nectar (EFN) was secreted from previously amorphic sites on stems, flowering stalks and leaf axils from the onset of flowering until silique formation. Transverse sections at the point of nectar secretion revealed a pocket-like structure whose opening was surrounded by modified stomatal guard cells. The EFN droplets were viscous and up to 50% of the total weight was sugars, 97% of which was sucrose in the five varieties of B. juncea examined. Threonine, glutamine, arginine and glutamate were the most abundant amino acids. EFN droplets also contained glucosinolates, mainly gluconapin and sinigrin. Nectar secretion was increased when the plants were damaged by chewing above- and belowground herbivores and sap-sucking aphids. Parasitoids of each herbivore species were tested for their preference, of which three parasitoids preferred EFN and sucrose solutions over water. Moreover, the survival and fecundity of parasitoids were positively affected by feeding on EFN. 1. Two field experiments were carried out to examine the role of patch size, host density, and complexity of the surrounding habitat, on the foraging behaviour of the parasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata in the field. 2. First, released parasitoids were recaptured on patches of one or four Brassica nigra plants, each containing 10 hosts that were placed in a mown grassland area. Recaptures of females were higher than males, and males and females aggregated at patches with four plants. 3. In experiment 2, plants containing 0, 5 or 10 hosts were placed in unmown grassland plots that differed in plant species composition, on bare soil, and on mown grassland. Very low numbers of parasitoids were recaptured in the vegetated plots, while high numbers of parasitoids were recaptured on plants placed on bare soil or in mown grassland. Recaptures were higher on plants on bare soil than on mown grassland, and highest on plants containing 10 hosts. The host density effect was significantly more apparent in mown grassland than on bare soil. 4. Cotesia glomerata responds in an aggregative way to host density in the field. However, host location success is determined mostly by habitat characteristics, and stronger host or host-plant cues are required when habitat complexity increases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lysibia maim Gravenhorst (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) is a solitary hyperparasitoid that attacks newly cocooned prepupae and pupae of braconid wasps in the subfamily Microgastrinae. One of its preferred hosts is Cotesia glomerata L. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a gregarious endo-parasitoid of white butterfly caterpillars that feed exclusively on plants producing partly inducible glycoside toxins known as glucosinolates. Here, adult body size, egg-to-adult developmental time, and developmental mortality were compared in L. nana reared from prepupae of C. glomerata (the "primary host") emerging from larvae of Pieris rapae (L.) and PICrIS brassicae (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) that were in turn maintained on two related crucifers, Brassica oleracea L. and Brassica nigra L. (Brassicaceae) Moreover, offspring sex ratio of L. maim reared in the laboratory was compared with that of field populations of C. glomerata reared on P. brassicae. Hyperparasitoids attained larger mass when "originating" from P. brassicae than P. rapae, a pattern that closely reflected host quality for C. glomerata. However, for a given host cocoon mass at parasitism, hyperparasitoid mass was greater on P. brassicae reared from B. oleracea than from B. nigra. Developmental time was more uniform across the different species combinations. Sex ratios in L. nana were higher than in C. gloznerata, irrespective of the secondary (herbivore) host. Our results suggest that plant and herbivore quality are important factors affecting the development of L. nana as mediated through the primary parasitoid host. To investigate the influence of soil-borne pathogens on the population biology of a grassland species in natural vegetation, soil samples were collected, partly disinfected or sterilized and then planted with Plantago lanceolata. Those on some of the untreated soils showed growth reduction due to a biotic factor in the soil. This growth reduction was not associated with the density of P. lanceolata plants at the sampling sites. It was only visible when differences in abiotic factors - especially nutrient levels -were eliminated. In the natural situation the nutritional status of the soil has a far greater impact than biotic soil factors. Micro-organisms harmful to Plantago roots are considered to be of minor importance in the distribution of the individuals in the P. lanceolata population studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
