To align with Kenya 2030 Vision of education for self-reliance, there is a growing need for classroom instruction that develops students' capacity to be in control of their learning. This paper reports a two-year study that tested feasibility of implementing ePEARL, an e-portfolio, in the context of Kenyan public schools. By design, the digital portfolio supports the key learning processes though the phases of self-regulated learning--forethought, performance, and self-reflection. In this study, students (N=137) from four secondary classrooms used the tool as part of classroom instruction to complete their project assignments. Repeated measures analyses revealed that, over-time, students who demonstrated fuller use of ePEARL made significantly higher gains and reported higher level of self-regulated strategies compared to their classmates who hardly used the tool. The results suggest that in order to yield important benefits, the tool should be meaningfully integrated into classroom instruction.

This paper explores factors to increase the likelihood that the implementation of ABRACADABRA, a technology-based approach to teaching and learning literacy, endures and expands beyond the initial research. Started as a pilot study in 12 classrooms, the implementation spread to more than 500 primary classrooms over six years in five areas of Kenya. Drawing from research about scalability and sustainability of educational interventions and value-expectancy-cost theory, an exploratory survey was designed to interview a range of actors involved in the software implementation. We used a combination of an a priori and data-driven coding approaches to analyse the narratives. We then built a model exploring the relationship between expectancy-value-cost beliefs and the factors associated with implementation and sustainability. The model explained an important portion of variance in the self-reported intent to use the software with the most significant contributions from policies, professional development, and students. These findings may be useful in the context of low- and medium-income countries where no research-proven principles exist to building sustainable and scalable educational interventions.

Summary: RNA degradation is a central process required for transcriptional regulation. Eventually, this process degrades diribonucleotides into mononucleotides by specific diribonucleases. In Escherichia coli, oligoribonuclease (Orn) serves this function and is unique as the only essential exoribonuclease. Yet, related organisms, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, display a growth defect but are viable without Orn, contesting its essentiality. Here, we take advantage of P. aeruginosa orn mutants to screen for suppressors that restore colony morphology and identified yciV. Purified YciV (RNase AM) exhibits diribonuclease activity. While RNase AM is present in all γ-proteobacteria, phylogenetic analysis reveals differences that map to the active site. RNase AMPa expression in E. coli eliminates the necessity of orn. Together, these results show that diribonuclease activity prevents toxic diribonucleotide accumulation in γ-proteobacteria, suggesting that diribonucleotides may be utilized to monitor RNA degradation efficacy. Because higher eukaryotes encode Orn, these observations indicate a conserved mechanism for monitoring RNA degradation.

Using data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, we estimate associations of paternal incarceration with three measures of teens' attitudes and expectations: (1) optimism about the future, (2) perceived importance of college graduation, and (3) perceived likelihood of college graduation. Results suggest that whereas optimism toward the future and the importance of college are resilient in the face of paternal incarceration, teens' expectations of actual college completion are reduced, particularly for Black youth. An examination of micro-, meso-, and macro-level mechanisms suggests that early consequences of paternal incarceration influence perceptions of future educational trajectories. Our findings point to the complexity of contemporary teens' college-related attitudes in the wake of the prison boom. Signs of optimism surfaced, yet obstacles associated with paternal incarceration represent a type of racialized constraint. An updating of the educational expectations literature is needed to account for the racialized nature of the era of mass incarceration in the United States.

This paper describes the development and initial psychometric testing of the baseline Spirituality Survey (SS-1) from the Study on Stress, Spirituality, and Health (SSSH) which contained a mixture of items selected from validated existing scales and new items generated to measure important constructs not captured by existing instruments. The purpose was to establish the validity of new and existing measures in our racially/ethnically diverse sample. Psychometric properties of the SS-1 were evaluated using standard psychometric analyses in 4,634 SSSH participants. Predictive validity of SS-1 scales was assessed in relation to the physical and mental health component scores from the Short-Form 12 Health Survey (SF-12). Scales exhibited adequate to strong psychometric properties and demonstrated construct and predictive validity. Overall, the correlational findings provide solid evidence that the SS-1 scales are associated with a wide range of relevant R/S attitudes, mental health, and to a lesser degree physical health.

Earning a postsecondary degree or credential is increasingly important for individuals to succeed in the rapidly changing, global economy. College access programs like Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) serve to increase high school graduation and college readiness for underserved youth. This quasi-experimental study examined intermediate GEAR UP outcomes for GEAR UP Iowa 2.0 students (N = 4,845) and non-GEAR UP comparison students (N = 25,926). Among students who had participated in the program from 7th through 10th grade, GEAR UP students demonstrated higher attendance rates and increased standardized test scores with more impact shown among individuals from lower socioeconomic families. The implications and avenues for future research are discussed.

Summary: Physical disability is a common component of post‐intensive care syndrome, but the importance of musculoskeletal health in this population is currently unknown. We aimed to determine the musculoskeletal health state of intensive care unit survivors and assess its relationship with health‐related quality of life; employment; and psychological and physical function. We conducted a multicentre prospective cohort study of adults admitted to intensive care for > 48 h without musculoskeletal trauma or neurological insult. Patients were followed up 6 months after admission where musculoskeletal health state was measured using the validated Musculoskeletal Health Questionnaire score. Of the 254 participants, 150 (59%) had a musculoskeletal problem and only 60 (24%) had received physiotherapy after discharge. Functional Comorbidity Index, Clinical Frailty Scale, duration of intensive care unit stay and prone positioning were all independently associated with worse musculoskeletal health. Musculoskeletal health state moderately correlated with quality of life, rs = 0.499 (95%CI 0.392–0.589); anxiety, rs = ‐0.433 (95%CI ‐0.538 to ‐0.315); and depression, rs = ‐0.537 (95%CI ‐0.631 to ‐0.434) (all p < 0.001). Patients with a musculoskeletal problem were less physically active than those without a problem (median (IQR [range]) number of 30 min physical activity sessions per week 1 (0–3.25 [0–7]) vs. 4 (1–7 [0–7]), p < 0.001, respectively). This study found that musculoskeletal health problems were common after intensive care unit stay. However, we observed that < 25% of patients received physical rehabilitation after discharge home. We report the first field data on the seasonality of natural history events in the viviparous horned lizard species Phrynosoma ditmarsi. Our radiotelemetry tracking of seven adults (six females, one male) and other encounters allowed us to identify seasonal changes in movement patterns, brumation inactivity, some growth patterns of adults and juveniles, seasonal body temperatures, predation events, feeding patterns, diurnal and nocturnal site selections, mating, and parturition of young. During winter we noted females exhibit inactive brumation in poorly concealed and mildly protective retreats. They were often in physically exposed sites and two experienced winter predations. Our video recording of a natural mating in mid-November, together with three dramatic female weight losses (mean 42% of total weight) signaling parturition events in July, established fall mating and early summer parturition as the species' reproductive cycle, with a gestational period of 7–8 months. This clarifies our understanding of their reproductive cycle, one that facilitates rapid newborn growth and maternal resource replenishment during summer monsoonal rains, prior to fall mating by adults before the arrival of low winter activity, reduced growth, and brumation. The following summer, the previous year's juveniles experience a second monsoonal summer growth period, probably leading to their fall maturation as 15- to 16-month-old reproductive adults. ObjectiveTo determine if injection of vitamin K3 in an acupuncture point is optimal for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhoea, when compared with 2 other injection treatments.SettingA Menstrual Disorder Centre at a public hospital in Shanghai, China.ParticipantsChinese women aged 14-25 years with severe primary dysmenorrhoea for at least 6 months not relieved by any other treatment were recruited. Exclusion criteria were the use of oral contraceptives, intrauterine devices or anticoagulant drugs, pregnancy, history of abdominal surgery, participation in other therapies for pain and diagnosis of secondary dysmenorrhoea. Eighty patients with primary dysmenorrhoea, as defined on a 4-grade scale, completed the study. Two patients withdrew after randomisation.InterventionsA double-blind, double-dummy, randomised controlled trial compared vitamin K3 acupuncture point injection to saline acupuncture point injection and vitamin K3 deep muscle injection. Patients in each group received 3 injections at a single treatment visit.Primary and secondary outcome measuresThe primary outcome was the difference in subjective perception of pain as measured by an 11 unit Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Secondary measurements were Cox Pain Intensity and Duration scales and the consumption of analgesic tablets before and after treatment and during 6 following cycles.ResultsPatients in all 3 groups experienced pain relief from the injection treatments. Differences in NRS measured mean pain scores between the 2 active control groups were less than 1 unit (-0.71, CI -1.37 to -0.05) and not significant, but the differences in average scores between the treatment hypothesised to be optimal and both active control groups (1.11, CI 0.45 to 1.78) and (1.82, CI 1.45 to 2.49) were statistically significant in adjusted mixed-effects models. Menstrual distress and use of analgesics were diminished for 6 months post-treatment.ConclusionsAcupuncture point injection of vitamin K3 relieves menstrual pain rapidly and is a useful treatment in an urban outpatient clinic.Trial registration numberNCT00104546; Results.

This systematic review builds upon the work of Abrami et al. (2006) and McGreal and Anderson (2007). It seeks to provide a synthesis and discussion of publicly available government policy documents with regard to e-learning in Canada. In total, 138 policy documents from Canadian provinces and territories and several federal agencies, dated from 2000 to 2010, were identified, retrieved and analyzed using prescriptive and emergent coding approaches with the purpose of uncovering and describing areas of commonality and inconsistency and, hence, determining where discussions about e-learning are lacking. The review confirmed that Canadian policy makers view technology as offering various potential benefits to learners, but also revealed a troubling lack of specific details, consistency and coordination in facilitating the development of e-learning to fulfill these optimistic expectations. RNA degradation is fundamental for cellular homeostasis. The process is carried out by various classes of endolytic and exolytic enzymes that together degrade an RNA polymer to mono-ribonucleotides. Within the exoribonucleases, nano-RNases play a unique role as they act on the smallest breakdown products and hence catalyze the final steps in the process. We recently showed that oligoribonuclease (Orn) acts as a dedicated diribonuclease, defining the ultimate step in RNA degradation that is crucial for cellular fitness (Kim et al., 2019). Whether such a specific activity exists in organisms that lack Orn-type exoribonucleases remained unclear. Through quantitative structure-function analyses, we show here that NrnC-type RNases share this narrow substrate length preference with Orn. Although NrnC and Orn employ similar structural features that distinguish these two classes of dinucleases from other exonucleases, the key determinants for dinuclease activity are realized through distinct structural scaffolds. The structures, together with comparative genomic analyses of the phylogeny of DEDD-type exoribonucleases, indicate convergent evolution as the mechanism of how dinuclease activity emerged repeatedly in various organisms. The evolutionary pressure to maintain dinuclease activity further underlines the important role these analogous proteins play for cell growth.
